JULY 12 OPERA AT THE SHOREEmerging opera stars from the Loren L. Zachary National Vocal Competition will perform along the water in arias and ensembles from best-loved operas in this always-popular concert. Maestro Frank Fetta conducts the Marina del Rey Symphony.

JULY 26 LEONARD BERNSTEIN AT 100: BALLET WITH BERNSTEINIn honor of American composer, conductor, pianist, and humanitarian Leonard Bernstein’s 100th birthday, the Marina del Rey Symphony plays orchestral selections from West Side Story and On the Town, accompanied by original ballet performances choreographed by renowned dancer Nancy Dobbs Owen. The Symphonic Suite from ‘On the Waterfront’ as well as Overture to ‘Candide’ will also be featured.

AUGUST 9 KATHARINE MCPHEE Ever since her storied run on American Idol Season 5 in 2006, Katharine McPhee has continued to captivate audiences with her spellbinding music, powerhouse presence and show-stopping performances. Her smash “Over It” propelled her 2007 self-titled debut album to #2 on the Billboard Top 200, followed by Unbroken and Christmas Is The Time To Say I Love You in 2010, and 2015’s Hysteria. She has also become a force on the big and small screens, with starring roles on Smash, Scorpion and various films. On her fifth full-length album release, I Fall In Love Too Easily, McPhee reimagines and reinvigorates a host of timeless jazz standards.

AUGUST 23 / AUGUST 25 (ENCORE) SOUTH PACIFIC – staged production “Set in an island paradise during World War II, two parallel love stories are threatened by the dangers of prejudice and war. Nellie, a spunky nurse from Arkansas, falls in love with a mature French planter, Emile. Nellie learns that the mother of his children was an island native and, unable to turn her back on the prejudices with which she was raised, refuses Emile’s proposal of marriage. Meanwhile, the strapping Lt. Joe Cable denies himself the fulfillment of a future with an innocent Tonkinese girl with whom he’s fallen in love out of the same fears that haunt Nellie. When Emile is recruited to accompany Joe on a dangerous mission that claims Joe’s life, Nellie realizes that life is too short not to seize her own chance for happiness, thus confronting and conquering her prejudices.” – The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization

JULY 21 LALAH HATHAWAYAn accomplished artist, songwriter, producer, and DJ, Lalah Hathaway has received five Grammy Awards, including Best R&B Album for Lalah Hathaway Live in 2017. She has also collaborated with Pharrell Williams and Kendrick Lamar, and performed on stage with Prince, Mary J. Blige, Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, and Anita Baker. Her new album, Honestly, features a colorful palette that recalls a feeling of child’s play, powerfully juxtaposed with hard-hitting beats and cut with the songs’ piercing subject matters.

AUGUST 4 CAT POWERCharlyn Marie Marshall, also known as Chan Marshall or by her stage name Cat Power, is an American singer-songwriter and self-taught musician. From a “mix of punk, folk and blues” in her earliest albums, and elements of soul and other genres more prevalent in her later material, to the electronica in her self-produced album Sun, which opened at #10 on the Billboard 200 in 2012, Cat Power’s sound is constantly evolving. She has currently finished her ninth album, to be released in 2018.

AUGUST 18 X Formed in 1977, X established themselves as one of the best bands and legendary leaders in the first wave of LA’s flourishing punk scene. They released several critically acclaimed albums over the years, two of which, Los Angeles and Wild Gift, have been ranked by Rolling Stone magazine in the top 500 greatest albums of all time. In 2017, the band celebrated their 40th anniversary in music with a Grammy Museum exhibit, and the original line-up fully intact, featuring vocalist Exene Cervenka, vocalist/bassist John Doe, guitarist Billy Zoom, and drummer DJ Bonebrake.

SEPTEMBER 1 LA SANTA CECILIA Named after the patron saint of music, Grammy-winner La Santa Cecilia is a musical phenomenon that defies musical and cultural boundaries. In their 2011 debut album, Noche y Citas, the band embodies the voice of a new bicultural generation in the U.S., fully immersed in modern music but still close to their Latin American influences and Mexican heritage, through songs about love, loss, and every day struggles. In 2017, the band again broke new ground with their unique visual album of traditional Mexican and Latin American music, Amar y Vivir.
