Visiting Little India By Anna Magyar Little India is probably the most vivid area of Singapore. The streets are even more crowded during the festive season. All the beautiful decorations, the lights, the colors give you an idea how the Indian ethnic community celebrate Dewali (or Depavali), the festival of lights. Our group gathered at the Straits View Condo and we headed to Singapore to sense the atmosphere of this district. Our drive was quite smooth through the border to our destination. The occasional rain could not ruin our mood to discover the authentic and interesting side of Little India. This area has always fascinated me. The colorful and picturesque houses, the crowd on the streets, the many shops and restaurants, the smell of flowers and spices, the honking cars… They are all part of the district and they overwhelm your senses.

We walked towards the bazaar. This festive bazaar was specially set up for the occasion. From the first sight it enchanted us. We started to look for special souvenirs, traditional clothes, shoes, jewelry, home decoration or sweets. We tried our best to bargain for a better price. It was hard to take in all the shiny colors and glitters. The variations of the products were just amazing. Many stalls offered Indian wares and snacks. The streets were decorated with arches. As we walked along Serangoon Road and it started to get darker, all the streets lights and decorations lighted up. What a charming and delightful view. This was truly the festival of lights.

We stopped at a beautiful temple for a while. It was very crowded. The devotees prepared themselves for the celebration, gave sacrifices and prayed to the Gods.

After the long walk we got hungry. Luckily we had a wonderful and tasteful buffet dinner at the Riverwalk tandoor restaurant. We enjoyed the food, shared stories about evening and showed our purchases to each other. We arrived in JB quite late with very nice memories and lots of pictures. Thank you to Leila and Rita for organizing this trip and for being our guides!
