PLEASE EXTEND A WARM WELCOME TO FATHER STAN FIUK, OUR GUEST SPEAKER,

NEXT WEEKEND, SEPT. 21/22 AT ALL MASSES “… I am begging for forgiveness…” is a re-writing PhD thesis on Dogmatic Theology prepared for The John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin. The book attempts to combine theological visions from different countries and cultures. The author wishes every reader to have fruitful readings and open themselves to the infinite and inconceivable grace of God’s Mercy. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Father Stanislaw Fiuk was born in Poland in 1962 and was ordained a priest on June 2, 1990, in the Cathedral in Lublin by Bishop Boleslaw Pytak. After a year of work in Poland he was transferred to Ukraine and spent seven years in reconstruction at Marian Sanctuary in Letichev (Dioceses of Kamienice-Podalski). Upon his return to the Ukraine, Archbishop Jozef Zycinski directed him to Bolivia’s mission in Bulo Bulo where he worked six years (Parish Nuestra Senora de Copacabana of the Prelatura de Aiquile). He returned to the Ukraine for a year where he was confessor at the Sanctuary at Santa Maria delle Carceri in Prato (Tuscany). Father Stanislaw was then directed to the Archdiocese of San Antonio in Texas, where he has worked for over 10 years.

LIVING the

WORD

LIVING the

WORD

THIS WEEK’S FOCUS: ALTITUDE ADJUSTMENT

We can sometimes think too highly of ourselves, and at other times we have a falsely low self-image. God calls us to an honest evaluation of our lives.

FIRST READING Why should your wrath blaze up against your own people, whom you brought out of Egypt? (Ex 32:7-11, 13-14). Moses went up Mount Sinai to meet the Lord. The peo-ple who remained at the base of the mountain decided to take their gold jewelry and make a golden calf that they would worship. God offers to destroy this people and to make a great people come from Moses. He calls them a stiff-necked people. After everything that he had done in their behalf, they should not have doubted him for a second. Yet, they seemed to use every occasion to rebel against the Lord. Moses implored God to have mercy upon his people. He reminded God of the history of God’s relationship with them. God had acted in Abra-ham’s, Isaac’s, and Jacob’s behalf. He had promised his people the land and a great number of descendants. How could God now go back on his promises? SECOND READING The grace of our Lord has been abundant (1 Timothy 1:12-17). Saint Paul was a great sinner. He opposed the ways of the Lord when he persecuted Christians in the early days of the Church. He calls himself a blasphemer, per-secutor, and arrogant man. Instead of punishing Paul, God forgave him and used him as an instrument of his mercy. He was visible proof that Jesus came into the world to save sinners. This is really the story of each

one of us. We have been forgiven by the Lord. We should be willing to share our story with all who are willing to hear. We are frequently ready to share the stories of our victory, but it is just as important to share the stories of our weaknesses (and how God worked through those weaknesses to show his strength).

GOSPEL There is great rejoicing in heaven and among the angels when a sinner repents (Luke 15:1-32 [1-10]). Luke’s is a gospel of compassion and the forgiveness of sins. Two short parables deal with God’s attitude toward those who are sinners. God is not out to get them. He is not sitting in heaven planning his revenge against those who have sinned. Rather, he is actively seeking out those who have sinned so that he might offer his forgiveness. God is always filled with mercy. A shepherd leaves 99 sheep in the wilderness so that he might seek out the one that is lost. When that sheep is found, the shepherd responds with great joy. This is remarkable. It means that Jesus’ mission is not for those who are religious and righteous, but for those who are sinners and alienated. Typical to Luke’s Gospel, when a man’s story is told, there is a woman’s story told immediately afterward to balance it… in this case the Parable of the Lost Coin and is a parallel story to the first one.

REFLECTION These readings call us back to earth when we sometimes think ourselves better than others. We are all sinners, and as St. Paul reminds us, Christ came into the world to save sinners—and that includes us. Feeling God absent, the Israelites built a molten calf and broke the command to have no images of God. Moses called God to task: Re-member your promises and be faithful to them. The Lord relented. Moses had the courage to ask God for a kind of altitude adjustment. Paul persecuted the early Church but his encounter with the merciful Jesus changed him, and led to Paul becoming a trustworthy witness to God’s all-inclusive mercy. Jesus is addressing tax collectors and sinners and invites them to adjust their attitudes. When something lost is found, fear and rash judgment become renewed trust and rejoicing. Do you see yourself as unworthy of God’s merciful love, or better than others because your sin is not as great as theirs, or entitled to special treatment because you’ve been “good”? Have you built your own molten calf? Name the kind of altitude adjustment you need to celebrate and rejoice that God has found you where you were lost.

VISITATION CATHOLIC CHURCH

THURSDAY, SEPT. 19 (Third Thursday of every month)

from 7-7:30 pm

Service includes prayers, hymns and blessing with the St. Peregrine relic.

ALL ARE WELCOME!

The moral of St. Peregrine’s life is not only God’s miracle cure, Furthermore that this faithful servant unconditionally placed

himself in the hands of God, therefore his trust in God serves as a model for those dealing with illness.

ABOUT SAINT PEREGRINE Peregrine Laziosl was born in 1260, the son of an affluent family in Forli, Italy. His family supported the anti-papal faction. In 1283 St. Philip Benzi, Prior General of the Friar Servants of Saint Mary, was sent to try to reconcile the divided community. While trying to preach in Forli, Philip was heckled and struck by the 18-year-old Peregrine. He was driven from the city with insults and violence. Peregrine repented and asked Philip for forgiveness. Saint Philip received him with kindness. The moment had a profound effect on Peregrine. Filled with remorse, he began to pray more and to channel his energies into good works. A few years later, he joined the Servites in Siena and went on to be ordained a priest. At the age of 60, he developed an infection in his leg. His condition deteriorated to the point that the physician decided to amputate his leg. The night before the operation Peregrine spent time praying before a fresco of the Crucifixion in the chapter room. He fell into a deep trance-like sleep and seemed to see Jesus descend from the cross through the town. The saint died on May 1, 1345 at the age of 85. — Wikipedia

ARMED FORCES PRAYER LIST

SUFFERING UNITED TO THE CROSS

Yesterday we celebrated the Exaltation of the Cross. It is a mystery that is difficult to explain or

understand that in this life suffering is a given. But in our Catholic faith, we know that suffering can be turned into mercy when we offer it to God. J esus, sinless, suffered most. We ought to ask less the question, “Why?” and offer the statement, “…For love of Christ, the Church, and my family.” There is a wonderful poem whose author is anonymous that can help us understand a bit more what this means. My life is but a weaving between my God and me;

I do not choose the colors, He worketh steadily. Oftentimes He weaveth sorrow and I in foolish pride, Forget He sees the upper and I the underside. Not till the loom is silent and the shutters cease to fly, Will God unroll the canvas to explain the reason why? The dark threads are as needful in the skillful Weaver’s hand, As the threads of gold and silver in the pattern He has planned.

Visit Jesus, present in the Holy Eucharist at the Adoration Chapel.

Offer Him your day, your works, your joys, and yes, your sufferings. There are many adoration hours that need partners. Prayerfully consider becoming a registered adorer. For information, call Mary Lewis at 630-941-9173 or Joan Taylor at 630-530-8963.

— VISITATION CATHOLIC READING CLUB—

Visitation Parish’s Catholic Reading Club will open the 2019/20 reading year with the book:

“FROM SLAVE TO PRIEST” By Author Sr. Caroline Hemesath

The story of the life of the first black Catholic priest in

the United States, Venerable Father Augustus Tolton

The Visitation Catholic Reading Club will discuss the life of Venerable Fr. Tolton on Thursday, Sept. 26, in the Visitation Parish Center, Classroom 1, 9:30-11:30 am. The book recounts the struggles he endured throughout his life. Venerable Fr. Tolton was born a slave in 1854. The end of slavery did not bring true ‘freedom’ to young Augustus. He struggled to get an education, spent long hours in church chapel in prayer, and attended clandes-tine classes taught by friendly priests and nuns who saw in him the bright spark of the love of God. Denied theo-logical training in the United States, due to racial preju-dice, he received his priestly education in Rome. Father Augustus’ first years in priestly ministry were in Quincy, IL. He went on to become tpastor of St. Monica Church, Chicago, which was the focal point for the life of black Chicagoans for 30 years. Despite years of prejudice, both before/after his ordination, he never lost his love for the Catholic Church nor the joy in his spiritual ministries to all whom he served. The author interviewed many peo-ple who knew Fr. Tolton, including St. Katherine Drexel. To obtain greater appreciation of Fr. Tolton’s life, the book by Deacon Harold Burke-Sivers, “Fr. Augustus Tolton’‘ will also be reviewed. Pope Francis, in October 2019, declared Fr. Augustus Tolton, Venerable. stating his life has been found as one of ‘heroic virtue,’ and worthy of beatification. An RSVP is not necessary. For information call Pauline Scharres at 630-257-2693.
