Dear Parent/Guardian,Welcome to our first newsletter of the year. It was so nice to be able to welcome so many of you to the recent Parent/Carers Evening in October. This was the first time that you were able to meet with your childs’ form tutor and find out about their level of commitment in school. You will notice when you receive the new reports this year that commitment is an area we will be focusing on and reporting to you about. The fantastic news is that we are starting to see an improvement in the level of commitment that students in all year groups are displaying, especially Year 11, whose level of commitment during their mock exams has been very high. This year we will also be celebrating the Year 11 achievements with a Mock Results Day, after their mock exams for the first time, which will mirror the same day that they will experience in August 2019, when they get to open their envelope for the real thing.

We really do want every student to be the best they can be, thrive in the best possible career and contribute positively to society. This was very clear from our recent Progress 8 score of 0.25, which places us in the top 25% of schools in the country for progress and 5th in the city. Crown Hills is increasingly becoming the first choice school for many parents and we are extremely overjoyed to have you working with us to make your child successful.

These results however did not come about by accident. Our staff have worked very hard and have demonstrated to students that by doing what it takes for as long as it takes anything is possible! I would therefore like to publicly thank them for all that they have done and I would like to say that your children are extremely fortunate to have such dedicated staff willing to go the extra mile.

In college, as in life, things change and we will be losing one of our long standing members of staff, Mr Ryan Jarvis, who has been leading on behaviour across the college for many years. We wish him well and would like to thank him for all of his hard work over the years as he moves on to do something completely different. As a result, I am pleased to announce that we have appointed a new Associate Assistant Principal, Mr Mohamed Patel, who comes to us with a wealth of experience and will start with us in January 2019.

I would also like to draw your attention to the new school website, which will have all of the information required about Crown Hills, as well as the latest news and events. You will also see from the new website that Crown Hills now stands for something special and unique, and we now have a waiting list in every year group as we become even more popular. If you do have any feedback, I would love to hear from you via the survey link on the website, so that we can truly make this college great!

Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award

The DofE is the world’s leading youth achievement award and has inspired and transformed the lives of millions of young people from all walks of life for the past seven decades. From volunteering to physical activities, life skills to expeditions, achieving a DofE Award is a passport to a brighter future, valued by employers and universities. This is a fantastic opportunity for your son/daughter to not only develop some invaluable experience but to also add a qualification to their portfolio which is held in such high esteem and will certainly ensure they are a standout candidate when applying for college. We are busy recruiting our next cohort of students and aim to start January 2019. https://www.dofe.org/“Early on in the academic year we saw our Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award cohort embark on the expedition section of the award. Following some rigorous training and a practice expedition weekend near Rutland Water, students took on their final expedition at Beaumanor Hall during early October. With some challenging wet weather conditions students had to navigate themselves around a route of approximately 30km over two days carrying heavy rucksacks! Additionally, students had to set up their own camp where they cooked for themselves and slept overnight in tents. This was the culmination of 6 months of hard work from students who have committed themselves to the various activities during this time across physical, skilled and voluntary sections. They have demonstrated exactly the sort of values we stand for at Crown Hills and have been an absolute credit to themselves and the school. Along with picking up a range of new skills along the way, the award puts them in an excellent position now during the process of applying for college. Well done to everyone who took part!”

Crown Hills has been taking part in this competition for over 10 years, giving the students a chance to perform and compete. The students took part in a Dance competition against other schools in Leicester and gained 1st place. They performed as a group and organised and attended extra rehearsals. The dance was based on the theme ‘Times are Changing’. They used this theme to focus on social media and the negative effects it can have to young people’s body image.

SUMMER SCHOOLIn June 2018, some students had the opportunity to go to summer school. This is when Leicester University invites Year 9’s and 10’s to come and experience life as a university student. This included picking a course, seeing the campus and living in a residential flat designed for university students for 4 days and 3 nights. It was a really good opportunity as we got to experience the life of a university student as well as the activities after the lessons on campus. It was also a chance to see if university is somewhere our students would like to attend in the future, so I highly recommend this to students who are able to take this opportunity.

“I am incredibly proud of the commitment that the girls have shown whilst preparing for this competition, it was a pleasure to watch them rehearse and was amazing to see them perform in the competition! I am very proud of them all!”

The following girls did a brilliant job delivering a cake sale for Children In Need.Daljit Ghattoura 8A, Safa Suleman 8A, Greta Laciova 8A, Kajal Khunti 8A,Munisa Khan 8A and Saffura Rehman 8A. They were committed, organised, sensible, and represented the school and their chosen charity well.We raised over £38 for Children in Need.

Students learned how to fillet a whole fish and make goujons with it. They made a complete meal of fish goujons, on a bed of crushed garlic with herb potatoes and a tartar sauce accompaniment. They were focussed on developing essential skills needed for their GCSE and the presentation of their dish.A lot of students were scared to handle the fish but once they started they were so focussed on what they were doing that their fear vanished. Most students said it was really good and they did learn a lot from the experience. Some even returned saying how their parents were proud of their efforts in doing something they have never done themselves. Filleting a fish is definitely a higher level skill, and one that our GCSE students have now become proficient at. This will help to enhance their GCSE coursework grade if they can incorporate it into their final dishes.

POSTCARD COMPETITION The Crown Hills Art society hold their annual exhibition every October. This year they set our Y9 and 10 students a post card competition ’40 Years On’ to mark their fortieth anniversary. All students who entered the competition had their work displayed in a professional way at the exhibition over the October Half term. The following students had their work recognised by the society, and therefore received a ‘Top Achiever’ award and/or sold their work for £5: Monika Ali, Iness Ghaina, Fatima Ali, Nasiba Nubha, Dharmik Praful-chandra, Sneha Thakur, Faatimah Umar, Jignisha Nanji, Samiksha Rasiklal, Sanjna Kumar, Gurwinder Kaur, Raeesah Osman, Naailah Ali, Amirah Hoque, Aaishah Ameer, Aliza Kanerawala, Zaahra Sayed, Fatima Patel, Bindika Patel, Sandhya Jitendra, Hira Iqbal,Ruqayya Mulla, Mahek Shekh, Zaynab Ravat, Kalsuma Begum, Aisha Aslam, Hajrah Seedat, Ruchita Kika and Hassan Tawad. The society then went on to pick the overall winner. Well done to Hajrah Seedat 10I, who received a £10 Amazon Voucher.

We decided to partake in a winter campaign for the refugee families of Syria, in conjunction with the charitable organisation One Nation. Over a number of weeks, students and staff were encouraged to bring in items that they’d wished to donate, and the response was overwhelming. A total of 1,446 items were collected including 399 pairs of gloves, 103 blankets, 190 scarves, 366 hats, 378 items of clothing and 10 other accessories.

Many students, across different year groups, gave up their break and lunchtime volunteering, helping with the lugging around of boxes, storage of items, right through to sorting and packing the items for collection. All students were given merits/tokens and a certificate for their efforts. “We are extremely proud of our students for the great empathy and care they have demonstrated throughout the campaign. We’d like to thank all our staff, and the Student Council for not only helping to promote the campaign, but also donating items themselves. As a school, we have shown what we are capable of when we come together as one. The convoy van was full to the brim with no more space for the boxes. It will certainly be massively appreciated by the families in need.”

Below is a list of students who helped out with the packing and sorting of items:Year 7: Avram Buscuioc 7A, Alex Pohlodko 7L, Milan Pohlodko 7N and Ricardo Filipache 7W. WHO WILL WIN THIS YEARSHOUSE COMPETITION ?

PHOTO

The House System at Crown Hills helps to underpin the values and ethos of the college. We use fully inclusive and balanced competition in all of its forms (see photos). There are four Houses, ably led by House leaders, consisting of tutor groups from each year group. Each House leader has a number of House captains, vice-captains and prefects to help with the smooth running of assemblies, competi-tions and charity fundraising. Each House is named after global icons of this and the last century. - Nelson Mandela (Ms Marchenay) - Malala Yousafzai (Mrs Boyce) - Martin Luther King (Miss Parra) - Mother Teresa (Ms Bamkin)

Imran left Crown Hills in 2008 and went on to study A-Levels at Beauchamp College in Leicester, before attending flight school. After graduating with the highest marks in his class during flight training, Imran was offered a partial scholarship at university, where he is currently completing a BSc Hons degree in Airline Transport Management, as well as being a Pilot for a major airline company. Imran says that Crown Hills taught him to work hard right from the outset, and this grounding offered him various opportunities post-secondary education. During a recent visit to the school, he addressed our current Year 11 students, advising them to “go the extra mile” as all career paths these days are highly competitive, and encouraged them to partake in extra-curricular activities that will help them stand out later on in life when starting out in their careers.

CROWN HILLS ALUMNI - HIGH FLIERS!

During the Readathon fortnight, students are encouraged to increase their reading of fiction. They are given additional time to read in lessons and in form time, and also encouraged to read more at home. The sponsorship money they raise goes to the Read for Good charity, which provides new books for children in hospital via mobile bookcases and resident storytellers. Children unable to leave their beds can choose books from specially designed mobile bookcases that move right up to their bedside. Because they are brand new, the books are safe for those at high risk of infection. Children who read for pleasure increase their vocabulary, have improved communication skills and achieve better results in their GCSEs than those who don’t read as often. They are more likely to become successful adults. Through theReadathon, we want to inspire the children to read and motivatethem through the good cause they are raising money for. Also, the school receives 20% of whatever they raise back for theirown library, so this will benefit our students aswell.

Scholars Programme - Graduation

DT JEWELLERY CLUB

READATHON

The Scholars Programme was an opportunity for outstanding students to gain specific knowledge, skills and develop the drive and ambition needed to help them secure places at top universities. The programme culminated with their graduation trip to the University of Nottingham on Saturday 7th July. The Scholars Progamme was extremely successful, with the majority of students graduating with 2:1. Students delivered a unit of work, “Inside No 10: The British Prime Minster in the Post War Years” by PhD tutor Mo Ali. This was delivered in group tutorials alongside a series of independent learning tasks. In order to complete the course and graduate, students needed to successfully complete their final assignments, which had to be handed in on time through the Virtual Learning Portal demonstrating the kind of commitment and aspiration to success that we strive for in every student at CHCC. During the graduation ceremony, students were presented with their certificates in front of their peers, teachers and parents. The experience was rewarding and showed the level of commitment needed in order to succeed.

The DT Jewellery Club runs every Tuesday lunchtime for Year 7 and Year 8 students. The aims are for students to expand their lifelong learning skills and solve problems with creative thinking. The club is also used to encourage our female students to pursue careers as Architects, Engineers, Games Designers, Prop Makers, Set Designers, Product Designers, Aerospace Technicians, Bio-Chemists, Bio-Engineers and much more, as there is a lack of women representation within these roles. Students have already developed their confidence and demonstrated that they can be highly resourceful. They have not only shown great commitment to attending the c lub, but a lso learnt that success (creat ing a f inal product) comes with perseverance and hard work.

SPORTS NEWSMr Stretton (Head of PE): “It has been a while since we last posted our results and to tie up the end of last year, it was another excellent year at Crown Hills that has seen pupils representing the school in a host of fantastic events, as well as attending extracurricular activities at both lunchtime and afterschool. I would like to thank the students who continue to demonstrate the high levels of commitment and aspiration to allow themselves and the school the success we continue to achieve. I would like to thank parents and guardians for their support in allowing the students to participate in the activities. I encourage you to continue to support and encourage the pupils to participate in school sport and also to seek opportunities outside of school to further enhance and refine the skills they develop here at Crown Hills. I would like to thank my PE staff who give freely hundreds of hours of their time to support and inspire the students to have the aspirations to achieve and be better. Thanks also to all the support staff who help with the planning of the events. It is with great delight that we received a new intake of Year 7’s who look keen and interested in participating in sport. I am sure that we will be able to get everyone involved throughout the year. There have been some great students who we see almost every day participating in sport and I would like to remind the Year 7’s of the challenge to every one of them: try and come along to an extracurricular activity at some point this year whether that be at lunchtime or after-school.We again were awarded “School Games Mark Gold” status for our continued effort in maximising the opportunities for students in sport and leadership. As a school were ranked No1 in thecity for participation opportunities and success in leadership(as you can see from the tables).

It was a great event with outstanding effort from the students in challenging conditions, without shade or shelter from the beating sun! In a tightly contested team pursuit/relay race, Crown Hills finished as runners up, qualifying for the Level 3 final to represent East Leicester. Congratulations also to Abdul-Wadood AL-Shekly (8U) who emerged victorious in the individual event. At the County Finals held at Brooksby College, we represented East Leicester and came 2nd overall in the team competition. Well done to all, but special thanks to Ammaarah Patel and Nasteho Sharif-Hassan, who stepped in at the last minute due to illness of other members.BadmintonCongratulations to the KS3 Boys “A” and “B” teams who were successful in advancing from the East Leicester badminton compe-tition held at Crown Hills. Both teams will now progress to the finals where they will aim to become county champions! KS4 Boys “A” & “B” Teams have both started well with the A team looking like they should finish top of the league and progress through to the Level 3 finals of the school games. The Girls competitions have not started yet but again we will look to be competitive.Leicestershire Badminton Association recently held a doubles tournament at Babington College, in which some of our pupils participated. The U14’s competition was won by Saahil Amitkumar and Krunal Pravin, 2nd place was taken by Harsh Shah and Ritesh Jadav. The U17’s tournament was won by Avi Sampat. These are another example of the pupil’s commitment to aspire. Well done to the boys.BasketballThis has again proved to be very popular as we have entered girls’ teams from all year groups. All are still participating in their respective leagues, but the Yr7 girls are, so far, unbeaten - a notable performance. The boys’ teams in Yr 7, 9 & 11 have also been involved in the leagues and we await the outcome of these. Our Year 9 girls basketball team are East Leicester champions and will be playing the next round in the new year.

Cricket - Another great season for our teams across all years, the highlights being:Year 8 - The Year 8’s carried on their undefeated run from the indoor format to the outdoor format, topping their group. They emerged victorious over Lancaster, Fullhurst, City of Leicester and Judgemeadow. They went on to win their respective semi final and won the East Leicester League, beating Rushey Mead. They narrowly lost away to Leicester Grammar School in the Twenty20 Cup. We have extremely high hopes for this team, who have had an excellent season in both the indoor and outdoor formats. Players such as Krunal Navin, Hardik Babu, Prashant Jagjivan, Harsh Shah, Ushal Savji and Uday Mahesh have also had various opportunities to play for the Year 9 side, making key contributions to the team. Well done lads, same again next season!Year 9 - Year 9 have had their best season yet in their time at Crown Hills. Led by their captain Tejash Vinod, they recorded a 100% record to win the Team Leicestershire League with wins over Lancaster, Soar Valley, Rushey Mead and English Martyrs. Despite a friendly loss to Leicester Grammar school, they have remained undeterred and recently progressed through to the semi finals of the County Cup after a nail-biting victory over John Ferneley. With the inclusion of some Year 8’s, this team has turned into a very strong outfit this season and are a match for anyone on their day. The season ended with a loss to Oakham in the semi finals, but what a great motivator for next year!.

Inclusive Sport & Leadership The Leadership Academy have been supporting a lot of events for the SSPAN this term and have done an exceptionally good job, as well as helping at events in school. The KS3 Boccia Team won the Level 3 School Games Finals, winning all of their matches comfortably to be crowned champions this year. We also took a team to the East Midlands Disability Athletics Competition in April. Jumana Osman won bronze in the long jump, Hira Iqbal won bronze in the shot putt and Paige Max won bronze in the javelin, and silver in the shot putt. All of the team have qualified for the National Disability Finals in July.

Sports Hall Athletics The annual East Leicester Sports Hall Athletics event was once again held at Crown Hills Community College, during early November. Students compete in a range of events such as shot put, vertical jump, speed bounce and various running/relay races. Both boys and girls represented the school for KS3, and KS4 boys with various amount of success, most notably the KS4 teams who were fantastic in finishing runners up.

Football The return of the football season saw Crown Hills have teams represent the school in all age categories. Of particular note were the Year 7 team who were narrowly defeated by St Paul’s in a semi final showdown and Year 11, who came agonisingly close to reaching the final but lost out in a penalty shootout to St Paul’s following a 1-1 draw. Great effort lads!

Table Tennis A fantastic start to the year for this ever increasing popular sport. We took 3 teams of girls, 3 teams of KS4 boys and a KS3 boys team. We were successful in winning all of the East Leicester events and progressed through to the County Finals. Our KS4 boys received a bronze medal for coming 3rd in a very strong county final. The KS3 boys came 5th in the county finals despite missing a player on the day, the KS3 girls achieved a bronze medal and the KS4 girls came 5th.

We held our first Sports Awards afternoon to celebrate the outstanding Aspiration, Commitment and Success of our pupils. It was an excellent event which included Inspirational guest speakers Anthony Clarke, (Ex GB Olympian and England Badminton Player) Karl Brown (Ex England Interna-tional Basketball Player), Matty Elliot (Ex Scotland and Leicester City Footballer). The speakers gave great advice on what time and commitment they have had to put in to reach the level they achieved and hopefully will further inspire our students to greater aspirations. Well done to all the pupils who took part throughout the year and especially those who won awards at the event.
