In 2016 the City of Griffith will be celebrating 100 years of settlement and growth, from its origins as a dusty shanty town known as Bagtown, to the thriving regional centre it is today. This journey has been eventful and inspirational, and the c ity’s residents of the past and present have contributed to the colour and vibrancy of life in this picturesque oasis.

The Town of Griffith was proclaimed on 4th August, 1916, and was named after Hon. Arthur Griffith, who was the New South Wales Minister for Public Works, 1910 – 1915. It was designed by Walter Burley Griffin, the Chicago architect who designed Canberra. Like Canberra, his design for Griffith featured a distinctive radial pattern with wide tree-lined streets, ring roads and parks.

World War I held up the building and settlement of the new town, but by late 1919 settlement had begun. The population of the area received a boost as returned soldiers settled on the irrigation farms under government sponsorship. Some businesses were reluctant to leave the thriving Bagtown to relocate in the new town which was some

considerable distance in the days of horse-drawn transport. However, by early 1920s, Bagtown had been abandoned, and all that now remains is the small Bagtown cemetery.

The first farms were made available in 1912, and the influx to the area increased as potential farmers from as far afield as Sydney, Broken Hill and California responded to the Government’s vigorous advertising campaign. Many Italian migrants were drawn to the area to pursue the type of farming familiar to them in their homeland. More recently, other nationalities have arrived creating a c ity rich in culture and diversity.

Griffith has ventured a long way from its early Bagtown years, from the introduction of irrigation, which is still the life blood of the area, to being proclaimed a c ity in 1987.

Many thousands of people have called Griffith home in the past 100 years and the centenary celebrations provide an ideal opportunity to gather reminiscences of their time in our wonderful c ity.

Griffith RegionWith many wonderful offering in food and wine, Griffith has grown into a bustling and cosmopolitan centre.

It’s hard to believe that the Griffith region was dismissed by the explorer John Oxley in 1817 as being ‘uninhabitable and useless to c ivilized man.’ Now a veritable oasis, thanks to the development of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area in the early 1900s, the region hosts an abundance of agriculture and processing industries and is an important food bowl of Australia.

Located on the traditional land of the Wiradjuri people, Griffith and its villages have grown and developed over the past century thanks largely to irrigation, the work of soldier settlers and later, Italian immigrants. Today, their combined legacy is alive and well in the people and traditions of this thriving vibrant c ity.

Griffith, with a population of 26,000, has become a rich blend of cultures and traditions. Today more than 70 nationalities add to our cultural tapestry including Indian, Afghani and Pac ific communities.

Our adventurous and industrious people have developed the huge agricultural sector of vineyards, orchards, cereal crops, pasture and rice over the past 100 years and then added value through manufacturing, retail and innovative technology. Griffith is the regional centre for the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area (MIA). The MIA is one of the most diverse and productive regions in Australia, contributing over $5 billion annually to the national economy.

The region produces more than 75% of NSW wine grapes, 70% of NSW c itrus production and is Australia’s largest c itrus produc ing region along with 90% of Australia’s rice production, 95% of Australia’s prunes and recently planted one million hazelnut trees for chocolate maker Ferrero. Griffith wineries export over $800M of wine per year and is the home of Yellow Tail. We are also a major chicken meat supplier and producer of olive oil, almonds, walnuts, tomato products and juice.

Real Juice Company Citrus Sculptures11 - 24 October 2015 | 9 - 22 October 2016The Citrus Sculptures are a unique event in Australia and are recognised as a Destination NSW Flagship event. The sculptures have grown from just five in 1995 to more than 60 large 3D sculptures in 2015 and are a feature of the Griffith Festival of Gardens.

The sculptures are based on the famous lemon sculptures in Menton, France, and with Griffith being a major c itrus produc ing region in Australia, the sculpture idea was a good one.

After consulting local engineers and contacting France, Griffith was granted permission to use their method of securing the fruit.

The Citrus Sculptures have become a major visitor attraction bringing thousands of people to Griffith every year.

The Real Juice Company has signed as the naming right sponsor since 2013, providing both a wonderful synergy and opportunity to grow the festival.

The sculptures are erected along Griffith’s main street, early on Sunday morning, by an army of 700 community volunteers. More than 100,000 oranges and 200,000 rubber bands are used to construct the sculptures. It is a fabulous community event with schools, local businesses, banks, cultural, service and church groups, and multi-national companies working side by side to create magnificent sculptures.

The Riverina produces one third of Australia’s c itrus and is one of the major orange production regions in Australia. Our unique combination of water security, fertile soils, advanced farming practices and warm climate produce some of the highest quality c itrus fruit on the global market.

Festival of Gardens 16 - 19 October 2015 | 14 - 17 October 2016The Festival of Gardens celebrates 25 years in 2015 and is a popular weekend attracting gardening enthusiasts from far and wide. In 2015 Costa, of ABC Gardening, will be the festival ambassador and will host garden walks, talks and workshops at the participating gardens. The 10 open gardens range from large country estates to compact town gardens. Most gardens offer catering to ensure you can sit and relax in the beautiful setting. Why not book a seat on the daily garden tour bus with an informative local driver? Further events include Paella by the Sculptures, the official launch of the Citrus Sculptures and garden festival held in the Visitor Centre car park. The event is a family night with live entertainment, children’s activities, paella and a range of other specialty dishes available by the plate. How to get to Griffith regionGriffith, NSW, is centrally located, 450km north of Melbourne, 570km south west of Sydney, 790km east of Adelaide and 350km west of Canberra.

RoadGriffith is located on the Kidman Way touring route and on the Burley Griffin Way and is just off the Sturt & Newell Highways.

Burley Griffin WayBurley Griffin Way is NSW state route 94 linking Canberra in the east to Griffith in the west. The route is named after Chicago architect Walter Burley Griffin, designer of the cities Canberra and Griffith, and neighbouring town Leeton. The route starts at Yass on the Hume Highway, and travels west through many towns and districts capturing a fabulous diversity of agriculture and produce.

Kidman WayThe Kidman Way touring route travels north - south and takes you through the heart of NSW, starting at Jerilderie in the south to Barringun on the NSW/QLD border. The Kidman Way is a sealed route which links with the Matilda Highway travelling north through the centre of QLD to Longreach and beyond. This is a popular inland route offering wonderful outback scenery, history, vivid colours and big skies. Pick up a Kidman Way Touring Guide from the Visitor Information Centre, or phone 1800 681 141 to have one posted to you.

Coach and RailDaily coach/rail services connect Griffith with Melbourne, Canberra & Sydney via Train Link and V-Line. There’s also a weekly rail service which operates from Sydney to Griffith on a Saturday, returning on Sunday.

Fly into Griffith AirportGriffith is well serviced by air from Sydney with Regional Express (REX) Airlines offering many flights per day, and serviced from Melbourne (Essendon) with Par Avion flying several days per week. Little ItalyThe very essence of Griffith is about food, wine, friends and family. More than 60% of the people of Griffith claim Italian heritage, and the early migrants brought with them their viticulture and market gardening skills and their passion for food. Old traditions like salami making, preserving olives and sauce days are continued enthusiastically by younger generations. In fact, the culture of homemade salami is on the increase, with the number of entries growing year after year in the annual Festa delle Salsicce.

Griffith’s main street is dominated by Italian cuisine, all making fabulous pizza, pasta and gnocchi and of course good coffee and delic ious treats! At the top end of town sits La Piccola Grosseria, an iconic Griffith Italian delicatessen. On the edge of town is Codemo Smallgoods, a family owned and commerc ial producer which has been making salami in Griffith since the 1960’s.

The Italian Museum located at Pioneer Park Museum provides the history of the Italian migration to Griffith and is well worth the visit.

The Foodie Trail This producer trail meanders around Griffith region, providing the inside guide to places to stop, sample and purchase locally made products. Bertoldo’s Bakery is famous for their gorgeous gelato and nougat and other bakery delights. Riverina Grove makes tapenades, relish, tomato sauce, pickled onions, olives and creates beautiful gift hampers. The region’s wineries make lusc ious syrupy stickies or dessert wines known the world over, such as De Bortoli’s Noble One, Botrytis Semillon. Codemo salamis are made using traditional fermentation techniques and offer a range of regional styles, with tastings available Monday to Saturday. Aim to be at Catania Fruit Salad Farm by 1.30pm for the daily tour (Monday to Saturday) which provides a great overview of small fruit blocks, the local prune story and a good tasting session of the homemade preserves and mustards. It’s educational and very tasty. Yarrow Park olive grove, located at Coleambally, south of Griffith, is dedicated to the production of quality table olives and Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Discover the unique characteristics of the single estate Extra Virgin Olive Oil range, varieties from Italy and Spain with interesting names; Lecc ino, Coratina, Manzanilla, Picual and Arbequina.

The Riverina region is Australia’s largest c itrus produc ing area, growing more than 30% of the country’s c itrus. Local juice companies produce freshly squeezed juice and distribute far and wide. Look out for our local Real Juice Company range of juice.

One of the delights of visiting a regional place is the availability of freshly picked seasonal produce. Griffith boasts a wonderful weekly Rotary market. The market operates from 7am to 12 noon every Sunday and is a great place to visit, buy some supplies and chat with the farmers who are always keen to share a yarn.

If you miss the market keep a keen eye out for roadside stalls which pop up throughout the year offering various seasonal produce including asparagus, blood oranges, mandarins, plums, oranges, grapes, apples, pumpkins, garlic, pecans and cherries. Keep some loose change in the car for the stall honesty box.

Catania Fruit Salad FarmCatania is a family owned farm, in Australia’s largest Irrigation area, the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area. You can view and gain an understanding of how a wide variety of horticulture and viticulture crops are grown.

Your journey begins with a look in the original mud brick home built in 1912, and a bus ride around their farm, sharing their stories and giving you an insight into the history of the pioneers of the time. The farm produces a variety of fruits and nuts which are sampled on the tour. When visiting Catania, you learn about how the Irrigation system delivers water to the farms and how crops are grown and harvested.

See the drying of the sugar plum. Enjoy our jams, mustards, prunes, pickles and traditional Sicilian preservative-free wine in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Catania Fruit Salad Farm is a great place to visit.

On your BikeThe very best way to explore Griffith region is on your bike. The flat open countryside is pretty; you’ll ride past vineyards and wineries, orange groves, seasonal crops and prune orchards with the Cocoparra National Park ranges a gorgeous backdrop in the distance. There are various loops to suit rider ability from beginners through to seasoned professionals. The roads are quiet and well maintained and there are plenty of great spots for coffee at the end of the ride!

Road cycling has a strong following in Griffith. In fact Griffith Cycle Club hosted the 2014 and 2015 NSW Road Cycling Masters, attracting cycling enthusiasts from all over the state and will be hosting the National Road Cycling Masters in October 2016.

Mountain biking is also catered for with off-road shared trails located on the outskirts of Griffith, along the rocky escarpment of Scenic Hill Reserve, and along the McPherson Ranges. There are fire trails to explore with the kids through to tracks for the committed mountain biker.

Relax… Museums, Galleries & GardensIf you are after a more relaxing pace, a visit to the Regional Art Gallery is recommended, located in the 1930s Art Deco building alongside the War Memorial Museum.. Griffith Pioneer Park Museum is an open air museum with more than 40 buildings which capture Griffith in the early 1900s. Nature & WalksThe Hermit’s Cave Lookout and trails are well worth exploring. A hermit called Valeri Ricetti called the caves his home from 1929 to 1940 and created stone walls, steps and pathways linking the chapel, garden and main cave areas. Visitors today can marvel at the remarkable site he created. Do wear good walking shoes as the terrain is rocky.

Cocoparra National Park is a lovely spot for walking and experienc ing nature. A place of contrasts, wattles, orchids and blue-tinged cypress pines stand out against the rich red rocks. After heavy rains the creeks flow, waterfalls leap to life and the land is bright with wildflowers and wildlife. Just 30km from Griffith, the park offers excellent BBQ fac ilities and walking tracks.

COCOPARRA NATIONAL PARK

Once inside Cocoparra National Park, the huge sky of the outback is painted with the distinctive Cocoparra Range. This dramatic and rugged place is a haven for bushwalkers, birdwatchers and nature-lovers, with a landscape that’s vividly alive and always changing.

Visit after rain to see the waterfalls and creeks in full flow and come in spring to see the wonderful variety of wildflowers; orchids, wattles and tea tree bring extra vibrancy to the land. Other seasonal delights include the nesting season of the majestic peregrine falcons.

Cocoparra National Park is located 34km from Griffith.

MURRUMBIDGEE VALLEY NATIONAL PARK

As the day breaks, grey kangaroos bound through the morning mist as you cast a line out into the river to catch a fish for breakfast. Staying at Murrumbidgee Valley National Park is the ultimate bush camping experience.

Choose from cycling and hiking routes, or discover the beauty of Murrumbidgee River by canoe; for the intrepid explorer, Narrandera to Yanco weir is a four-hour paddle. There are plenty of opportunities for fishing, swimming, picnicking, birdwatching and taking a GPS to ‘go bush’.

Murrumbidgee Valley National Park is located 17km from Narrandera, or 19km from Leeton.

WILLANDRA NATIONAL PARK

“We arrived and had a picnic lunch on the homestead lawn then camped in the bush under the stars beside the Willandra Creek that night.”

Europeans were first attracted to the Willandra area by the river system and native grasses. Willandra eventually became the largest pastoral station in the area.

The wetlands, woodlands and grassy plains of the park house 23 species of reptile and over 195 different types of bird including emu and the endangered plains-wanderer.

See kangaroos graze and play on the plains at dusk and dawn and look out for bearded dragons as you cycle the Merton trail.

Willandra National Park is located 195km from Griffith, and 85km from Hillston.

TwitchingGriffith is at the crossroads of bird migration particularly for eastern and western spec ies so it is a very good area for birdwatching. Within the Griffith c ity area itself, there are very accessible sites where our local birds can be seen at close range. Perhaps the most notable of these is the Scenic Hill and Golf Course areas where Major Mitchell’s Cockatoo and other parrot spec ies are common.

The Lake Wyangan/Campbell’s Swamp area is also worth visiting for water birds and further afield, Cocoparra National Park and the adjoining Binya State Forest have some of the best birding sites in the whole of the Riverina – a definite must for all keen bird watchers.

The Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area is also noted for the large number of Australasian Bittern that come to the area in the spring to the rice farms and adjoining irrigation channels to breed. Late October through to January is the best time to look for these secretive birds – early morning being the best time.

Explore the RiverinaMake Griffith your base and head out of town to explore the agricultural richness, diversity and history of the Riverina. Follow the Murrumbidgee River upstream from Darlington Point, book a safari tour at Altina Wildlife Park or learn about the cotton industry at Southern Cotton, Whitton, a $25 million state-of-the-art ginning fac ility.

Leeton is a good spot for lunch; grab some take away and relax in the beautiful park in the town centre or eat in at one of the many cafes. Then explore art deco Leeton, of which there are 21 buildings listed with the Art Deco Soc iety of NSW. The Roxy Theatre and the water towers some of the town’s finest examples. Call into the Visitor Information Centre, an attraction in its own right, and partake in the daily Tastes of Leeton event, find information and maps for local attractions, and admire the historic photos and art gallery. A visit to Fivebough & Tuckerbil Wetlands, a birdwatcher’s paradise is highly recommended with abundant migratory and resident birdlife and extensive walking tracks, with bird hides and picnic areas.

Narrandera, 30km from Leeton, is one of the oldest towns in the region having celebrated 150 years in 2013. The wide tree-lined streets and elegant historic buildings create a charming streetscape.

Temora is located 150km due east of Griffith on the Burley Griffin Way. The Temora Aviation Museum is home to a World Class flying collection of Australian ex-military aircraft. The museum holds regular weekends attracting plane buffs and families from far and wide.

The Murrumbidgee River, located 33km south of Griffith, is readily accessible at various locations and offers great paddling, picnicking and swimming holes. It is a naturally beautiful river with many undisturbed pockets and is home to a variety of flora and fauna.

Angling is a popular pastime either shore based or from boats. The target catch is the native Murray Cod, the largest of the inland spec ies, followed by Golden Perch (Yellow Belly).
