“OF THE FATHER’S LOVE BEGOTTENERE THE WORLDS BEGAN TO BE,

HE IS ALPHA AND OMEGAHE THE SOURCE, THE ENDING HE…”AURELIUS PRUDENTIUS, 4TH CENTURY ROMAN CHRISTIAN POET

“The prodigious expanses of time which preceded the first Christmas were not empty of Christ: they were imbued with

the influx of his power…when Christ first appeared in the arms of Mary he had already stirred up the world.”

From “Hymn of the Universe” by Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (1881-1955), French philosopher and priest

The voices of Prudentius and Chardin, separated in time by centuries yet impossibly similar, provide a theological framework for this year’s Christmas

in Christ Chapel services as we again gather in this space to contemplate the eternal nature of Christ, witness the wonder of the physical universe,

and give thanks for one of the great mysteries of faith—the prophecy and nativity of Jesus, the triune God, the Messiah.

Tonight, under a canopy of the shimmering aurora borealis, we become participants in the mystic interaction of the Divine with humanity

through a seamless thread of scripture and poetry, music, and movement. The timeless lament of the prophet Jeremiah mirrors our longing for

world healing, peace, and freedom from hate and fear; Gabriel—God’s messenger— brings inexplicable tidings of wonder and expectation to the humble Mary; a chorus of angels fills the heavens with songs of Hosanna

and announces to the world the Messiah’s birth; and Simeon, the God-receiver, beholds the Christ as revealed to him by the Holy Spirit.

Blessings and peace to each of you this Advent season. As we worship and welcome the Christ Child, let us strive to be part of the continuing

unfolding of the divine. In the words of Thomas Merton, the 20th-century Catholic mystic and thinker, “The Advent mystery is the beginning of the

end of all of us that is not yet Christ.”

Dr. Gregory AuneChristmas in Christ Chapel Artistic Director

Jon and Anita Thomsen Young Distinguished Endowed Chair in Music

to Christmas in Christ Chapel.

One of the hallmarks of this worship service is having the Advent and Christmas story presented through music, scripture, readings, dance, and visual arts that bring the theme to life. This year we consider how God has been visible through angels, prophets, and the birth of Jesus; and how God continues to work in ways that may be visible or mysterious.

The visual theme for this program is one with personal meaning to me. Our family has been blessed to have seen the northern lights on display many times at our cabin in northern Minnesota. Yet there is one time that stands out. Even though it was over 30 years ago, the image is still clear in my memory because it was the most visually amazing experience I have witnessed. As I looked north over the lake from the cabin the entire sky in all directions was dancing in streaks of every color imaginable.

In that instance, I felt the Divine and was awestruck by the beauty of God’s creation. While that experience was particularly powerful, I feel the presence of God in little moments each day, during family get-togethers, during sacred times such as weddings and funerals, and during Christmas in Christ Chapel each year when the trumpets sound the opening notes of O Come, All Ye Faithful.

We are grateful to the student performers and the faculty and staff who work to make this celebration happen. This year we give special thanks to two music faculty members who are retiring. Michael Jorgensen, who has taught voice and other music courses for 28 years at Gustavus, is a soloist in this year’s service. Also, we are grateful to Gregory Aune for 24 years of leading the Gustavus Choir and serving as musical director for this event. His gift of music and mentoring of generations of Gusties have left an enduring legacy of excellence on the Gustavus community.

May you have a blessed holiday season and surround yourself with the beauty and mystery of the Divine.

RIVERS OF LIGHT Eriks Esenvalds (b. 1988)

Sung in Sámi and English

Kuovsakasah reukarih tåkko teki, Northern Lights slide back and forth, sira ria (similar to fa–la–la…)tåkko teki back and forthsira ria, sira siraa ria (similar to fa–la–la…)

Guovssat, guovssat radni go Northern Lights, Northern Lights, blanket shiveringlibai libai libaida (similar to fa–la–la…)ruoná gákti green coat [gákti is a traditional Sámi costume]nu nu nu. (similar to fa–la–la…)

Winter night, the sky is filled with symphony of light, the sky is flooded with rivers of light. The doors of heaven have been opened tonight. From horizon to horizon misty dragons swim through the sky, green curtains billow and swirl, fast-moving, sky-filling, the tissues of gossamer. Nothing can be heard. Light shakes over the vault of heaven, its veil of glittering silver changing now to yellow, now to green, now to red. It spreads in restless change, into waving, into many-folded bands of silver. It shimmers in tongues of flame, over the very zenith it shoots a bright ray up until the whole melts away as a sigh of departing soul in the moonlight, leaving a glow in the sky like the dying embers of a great fire.

Sámi Folk Songs; Charles Francis Hall, Fridtjof Nansen, and compilation by the composer after various writings on the northern lights

UNTIL EVEN THE ANGELS FROM DOROTHY POEMS Craig Hella Johnson (b. 1963)

What the heart wants is to follow its true passion to lie down with it near the reeds beside the river, to devour it in the caves between the desert dunes, to sing its notes into the morning sky until even the angels wake up and take notice and look around for their beloved.Know who you are.

Carry it in your heart.A flame of love.Walk in silence. The moment will come,in your heart.

Dorothy Walters, from A Cloth of Fine Gold and Marrow of Flames

O DAY FULL OF GRACE Arr. F. Melius Christiansen

O day full of grace, which we behold, now gently to view ascending;Thou over the earth thy reign unfold, good cheer to all mortals lending,That children of light in every clime may prove that the night is ending.

How blest was that gracious midnight hour, when God in our flesh was given; Then flushed the dawn with light and pow’r, that spread o’er the darkened heaven; Then rose o’er the world that sun divine, which gloom from our hearts hath driven.

Yea, were ev’ry tree endowed with speech, and ev’ry leaflet singing,They never with praise His worth could reach, though earth with their praise be ringing.Who fully could praise the light of lifewho light to our souls is bringing, Who fully could praise the Lord!

With joy we depart for our fatherland. And there we shall walk in endless light.

Christmas in Christ Chapel is Gustavus Adolphus College’s community celebration of Jesus’ birth. It provides an opportunity for students who participate and students who attend to gain new insights about the feast of the Nativity. In an extended classroom, Christmas in Christ Chapel has academic/educational, liturgical/spiritual, and musical/dramatic components and is a creative work of the unique Gustavus talents and resources.

Many people have given of their time and resources to make Christmas in Christ Chapel a reality. Thank you to the student musicians, conductors, readers, and dancers who present this annual Christmas gift to the College and community, and to the many people who work behind the scenes to create, prepare, and host.

Congratulations to Heroic Productions for winning a Hermes Award, the highest award given for a livestream production, for each of the last two years.

ARTISTIC. INDIVIDUAL. DISTINCTIVE. Defining the liberal arts musician.

gustavus.edu/music

I am a self-taught painter who began painting full-time in 2004. I quickly became known for my dramatic angelic figures. As all the angels are unique, so will be your experience when viewing them. Some may evoke a spiritual connection, while others bring comfort and peace in difficult times. For me personally, they represent goodness and reaching higher and deeper within ourselves to make the world a better place.

It is my sincere belief that we can all be an angel to one another, so I have created a way that you can send free postcards to people you love and those who may need encouragement.

This has been a project in the making for a long time. Eight years ago, I thought it would be nice to have an angel painting giveaway at Christmas to people that were nominated who need spiritual uplifting. Little did I know how it would catch

on and how many lives would be touched. The stories of the recipients and what a difference it made to have an angel show up on their doorstep came flooding back to me. The outpouring of appreciation ignited a passion within me to keep offering hope and remind people that we are never alone.

Each angel painting is inspired from the love of my family, faith, and personal journey as an artist. Life is precious and I believe in the power of paying it forward and that we can change the world through acts of kindness. With all the darkness in today’s world, I am committed to bringing light and helping others to spread it as well. Enjoy these Angels of Light and spread the hope!

Blessings,Tom

Thomas Andrew Findlay

“I am a true colorist at heart. I love color because it can conjure deep emotions. I am inspired by it and hope to inspire with it.

The color of a painting is far more important to me than the complexity of the image.”
