Congratulations!

Athletic Hall of FameCBNA welcomes two new inductees into its

Coe-Brown Northwood Academy inducted two new members into its Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday, December 20, at the annual CBNA Alumni Basketball Games.

The 2014 inductees are Kristal Kostiew, Class of 2000 and CBNA Pep Band Director Bruce McCormick.

After graduating from CBNA in 2000, Kristal Kostiew went on to pursue a degree at the University of Vermont, where she began competing in hammer throw. While at Vermont she collected 14 America East Championships and was a four-time Vermont team MVP, as well as four-time America East Field Performer of the Year. In 2004 she was the America East Scholar Athlete of the Year and an Academic All American. Kristal was recently one of five new members inducted into her college alma mater’s 2014 Athletics Hall of Fame.

Kristal qualified for her first USA team in 2007 by finishing second at the USA Outdoor Championships. By winning a silver medal at the national championship, Kristal earned the right to represent the United States at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro in July 2007, where she took fourth place.

Kristal said in a 2007 interview for Coe-Brown’s Visions magazine, “If anyone had told me when I was in high school that someday I would be one of the best athletes in my sport, I wouldn’t have believed it. I think that a lot of what I took from academics and athletics at Coe Brown was the drive for excellence

no matter what the circumstances were.”Kristal is currently the volleyball coach at Englewood High

School in Colorado and she also teaches physical education to children in grades K-6 at Hay Elementary School.

Bruce McCormick came to Coe-Brown in 1995 when the Academy’s music program was in its infancy. A graduate of Lyndon State College with a BA in music education, Bruce had taught music at a high school in Vermont for 16 years. But, more importantly, he was a veteran musician, having played in a variety of bands over the years.

“My wife once said to me, ‘Teach what you know,’” says Bruce. He took that advice to heart and patterned Coe-Brown’s pep band after a full-time road band. One year after his arrival the pep band grew to 18 members and the Coe-Brown band began to develop a following.

“We consider ourselves part of the home-court advantage,” says Bruce. “We are proud to support Coe-Brown’s athletic program and feel fortunate to perform in a top-notch facility. Along with the athletes and the coaches, we are part of the package.”

In 2010 the New Hampshire Band Directors Association honored Bruce McCormick with its Outstanding Band Director Award.

Dear Friends,

We are so grateful for our Coe-Brown family! Students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the Academy—you are all part of the reason that Coe-Brown continues to succeed and grow year after year.

Our renovated Gerrish lobby is now a bright and welcoming place for students and visitors to the Academy. If you are in the area I hope you will stop by and take a look.

I am proud to announce that two of our seniors, Aurora Goodwin and Katheryn Huckins, have been named commended students in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program. Commended students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the competition by taking the Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Congratulations, Aurora and Katheryn!

Please join me in extending a warm welcome to our new staff member, Gregory Samuel, who joins the CBNA faculty with two years of experience as a chemistry teacher in the Science Department. Mr. Samuel holds both a Bachelor’s degree in chemistry and

a Master’s of Education from the University of New Hampshire. His other activities include membership in the UNH Juggling Club and experience with coaching track and field.

Best wishes for a happy and healthy holiday season and thank you for your ongoing support of Coe-Brown Northwood Academy.

Sincerely,

David S. Smith

Coe-Brown Northwood Academy is pleased to announce that senior Benjamin Porter was selected to receive the Rensselaer Medal Award. For more than 95 years Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, in conjunction with high schools around the world, has awarded the Rensselaer Medal to promising secondary school students who have distinguished themselves in math and science. To be honored with this prestigious award, a student must be ranked within the top 10% of the class, demonstrate potential for success in a challenging academic setting, excel in math and science courses (chemistry, physics, and a minimum of four years of mathematics through pre-calculus) and exhibit significant involvement in extracurricular activities. Should the student choose to enroll in RPI for post-secondary education, a merit scholarship with a minimum value of $15,000 per year is guaranteed. Congratulations to Ben!

NEWS FROM AROUND THE ACADEMYCompiled by CBNA faculty member Elizabeth Lent

The Coe-Brown Northwood Academy chapter of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) was been extremely busy during the first part of the school year. Members Nicole Beaupre, Meghan Percy, Andrew Shultz, Alex Yonchak, Brittany Guillemette, and Daphne Jordan, along with advisor Dr. JoAnn Zylak, attended the annual FBLA Fall Leadership Workshop on October 9 at Southern New Hampshire University. These six members had the chance to meet the state officer team, attended a workshop by an inspirational speaker on “It’s Up to You!” as well as workshops on Team Building/Leadership Training and on Law Enforcement/Leadership in the community.

The chapter participated in Breast Cancer Awareness on October 22 at CBNA by wearing pink, distributing pink ribbons and sharing breast cancer statistics (awareness) through announcements during the week.

CBNA FBLA also participates in the Multiple Sclerosis Walk and Awareness every April in Manchester and collects throughout the year for the MS Society and the March of Dimes to help find cures for these debilitating conditions. FBLA members are also collecting for Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth, and have already donated all their tip money earned by working at the Farmer’s Market Booth at Deerfield Fair and will continue collecting for CHaD until March of 2015 to help children in need.

An article written by Coe-Brown Northwood Academy Health/Physical Education teacher and girls’ soccer coach Josh Hils was published in the July/August 2014 edition of Coach & AD Magazine, a professional magazine for college and high school athletic directors and coaches. The article, titled Setting Up Athletes for Failure, grew out of Mr. Hils’ experience and passion for helping coaches build positive, student athlete centered coaching philosophies. The article focuses on the ways coaches can unintentionally create situations in which student athletes are set up to fail. It also illustrates ways for coaches to avoid these set ups and tips about how to create a positive coaching environment that is the extension of what happens in the educational setting.

Twelve Coe-Brown Northwood Academy students, led by CBNA Spanish Professor Michael Clauss, traveled to Mexico’s Yucatán peninsula in June, 2014 for an educational tour. The group traveled to several Mayan archeological sites, including Chichén Itzá, one of the seven wonders of the modern world. They also visited the Spanish colonial cities of Valladolid, Mérida, and Chetumal, had lessons in traditional dance, tried many types of regional food, visited a traditional Mayan home and experienced eco-tourism by swimming in waterfalls, in underground caves, and at Mexico’s pristine beaches. Collecting photos of VW beetles and items for a photo scavenger hunt rounded out the fun.

New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association officials presented CBNA with it seventh Sportsmanship Award at an assembly this past fall. NHIAA Sportsmanship Awards are presented annually to schools that have demonstrated a high degree of sportsmanship throughout the year.

The Harlem Magic came to Coe-Brown recently for a fun-filled evening of entertainment and basketball. This family event was a fundraiser for CBNA’s basketball program.

CBna Paul guptill ’52 Alumni and Friends Golf Tournament

Forty-three golfers participated in the CBNA Paul Guptill ’52 Alumni and Friends Golf Tournament at Nippo Lake Golf Club in Barrington on June 14, 2014. The tournament brought in $4,100 for Coe-Brown’s endowment fund this year and has raised just over $33,000 in its nine-year run. Many thanks to the golfers and sponsors who made this possible! We were thrilled to have so many alumni, faculty, students and friends of the Academy participating in the tournament.

Congratulations to the winning foursome of Bobby Grant ’00, Trevor Mauck ’02, Michael Sims and John Newman ’98. Our most challenged golfers, students Sam Fortier ’14, Kyle Stevens ’14, Davio DeLuca ’17 and faculty member Michael Clauss, were each awarded a four-pack of Gamer Soda, which is made by locally DSJ Beverages right in Strafford, New Hampshire!
