Scopus students enjoyed a friendly series of sporting contests against students from Moriah College, Sydney.

Forty-two students from Moriah College travelled to Scopus to compete in soccer, touch rugby, basketball and netball.

The visitors were billeted with Scopus families during their stay and took the opportunity to see a little of Melbourne.

The final results showed some tough matches were fought, with Scopus winning the boys’ basketball, drawing soccer and winning girls’ netball and soccer, while Moriah were too good at touch rugby in both the boys’ and girls’ competitions.

The visit was a great opportunity to forge closer ties between the two schools and saw new friendships formed both on and off the sporting field.

Editor’s Note:In other sporting news, we congratulate all our students who took part in the recent EISM (Eastern Independent Schools of Melbourne) Athletics Carnival at Olympic Park.

Scopus won the overall championship and achieved such outstanding results that we have been promoted to Division 1.

Scopus is the only Jewish school to compete in Division 1 in both Swimming and Athletics in the EISM competition.

Fun for toddlersGan Gani Toddler Program is an educational program designed to bring together parents and young children in a warm and nurturing Jewish environment. Now in its 4th year, the program runs at the Szalmuk Family Early Learning Centre from Tuesday to Friday and at the Fink Karp Ivany campus on Thursday and Friday mornings during school terms.

The sessions have become a weekly highlight for both children and their parents. The aim of the program is to facilitate play and children are presented with a stimulating and engaging play area. Parents, grandparents or carers spend time with their child, playing alongside and supporting their learning. Music and creative play bring the group together and sessions always culminate in Kabbalat Shabbat. Storytime winds down a happy hour of play.

In addition, parents are invited to attend occasional evening lectures on topics relevant to early childhood development.

Children who have already turned 2 years old and are eligible to enter Lower Kindergarten the following year are welcome to attend the program. Children do not need to be enrolled for Mount Scopus kindergarten in order to attend.

Visionary supportAs we plan Scopus’ 60th anniversary, which we will celebrate next year, we reflect on the positive impact of generations of supporters – leaders, volunteers and donors – who have contributed to our success.

We are especially indebted to those who do not only consider the school’s and our students’ daily needs but those who also have our future – and that of our community – firmly in mind.

One such visionary couple is Sonia and Don Marejn.

We are delighted that their generosity has resulted in the creation of the SONIA AND DON MAREJN ENDOWMENT FUND, in memory of the Marejn and Szmukler Families.

This Endowment, within the Mount Scopus College Foundation, will assist with need-based scholarships, whilst keeping the corpus intact in perpetuity. Their only requirement is that the children they will assist should demonstrate their ‘love to learn’.

Sonia and Don Marejn are well recognised as generous supporters of many local and Israeli organisations. They do not seek recognition but have agreed to this publicity in the hope it will inspire others to consider doing the same, either as a gift or as a bequest.

We at Mount Scopus College count ourselves truly blessed to be the beneficiary of their thoughtfulness and quiet philanthropy.

To discuss making any gift, bequest or scholarship endowment, please contact Marilyn Simon, Foundation Executive Director, Tel: 9834 0124 or Email: [email protected]

Mother-Daughter Bat Mitzvah programThe College has replaced its traditional Bat Mitzvah program with a progressive mother-daughter learning program, which offers a more significant and meaningful experience.

The 6-10 session learning program for both girls and their mothers runs weekly, with the focus on different Jewish women across history, from the Tanachic period to the modern era.

Through creative workshops, biblio-drama, art, music and traditional text study, these women are brought to life. The discussions are values-based, allowing the girls to become well acquainted with some remarkable Jewish heroines and their qualities. The program culminates in an informal celebratory event.

Program co-ordinator and Jewish Studies teacher, Adina Bankier-Karp said, “The program is focused on the learning journey, not the end. This learning is the heart of the experience.”

The program follows the Matan Bat-Mitzvah Program curriculum, developed in Israel, and now run in over a hundred communities around the world.

Mother of one of the first girls to participate in the new program, Ruth Maserow recalls, “The entire process was a lovely bonding experience and something we both looked forward to each week. The sessions were meaningful and fun as well as enlightening.”

Four small Bat Mitzvah groups are planned for this year for girls in Years 6 and 7, who are keen to celebrate their Bat Mitzvah in this enriching and very special way.

‘Teddy Bears for Peace’ is an initiative of the 2008 Castlemaine Multi-faith Peace Festival and involves two Year 6 Jewish Studies classes at Scopus.

Each class was given one or more teddy bears to name and dress in traditional Jewish fashion. The festival organisers then paired Scopus with two schools in Castlemaine − Castlemaine Steiner School and Winters Flat Primary School.

Dooby, Dina and Kovi bears, dressed in blue and white, with Kippot for the boy bears and all wearing Magen David necklaces were posted off to their new homes in Castlemaine. A few weeks later our students received bears from their classmates in Castlemaine and were delighted to meet Socks and Jeffrey.

The schools we have been paired with have many students from Sudan, as well as a large Buddhist student group, neither of whom have had any contact with Jewish people. During the project, each student will take home Socks or Jeffrey Bear and write a diary about the bear’s experiences/adventures. In addition the children will communicate with their new friends in Castlemaine via email and regular mail to let them know how the bears are going at Scopus. Layla Sacker, PYP Co-ordinator said, “The project not only gives our students an authentic reason to write, but also contributes to a more peaceful world by promoting understanding and tolerance. It will also give our students a real appreciation of other cultures and beliefs.” The Primary Years Programme of the International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people, who help to create a better and more peaceful world, through intercultural understanding and respect.

Students from the two Year 6 classes will also share their experiences with the rest of the school during the year.

MYP pre-authorizationAfter two years of implementation of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP), Mount Scopus is seeking formal accreditation (formally called authorization) for our Programme.

The College was granted a pre-authorization visit, designed to determine when a school will be ready for authorization, from the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) earlier this year. IBO Associate Regional Manager for the Asia Pacific Region, Curtis Beaverford, toured the school, reviewed curriculum documentation and spoke to administrators, teachers, parents, students and members of the College Council. We are pleased to report that we received positive feedback in all areas of curriculum and are now waiting the minimum six months after pre-authorization before applying for authorization with the International Baccalaureate Organization. We are very much encouraged by the pre-authorization report and look forward to authorization hopefully in February2009.

Our Primary School is also working towards pre-authorization for the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and we look forward to reporting on their progress in future editions.

Mazal Tov to Year 5 student Aidan Behrmann who is off to the Olympic Games in Beijing, China.

Aidan won the Channel 7 Sunrise/McDonalds ‘Champion Kids’ writing competition. He and four other winners will be flown to Beijing (along with some very lucky parents) in August, to attend Olympic events, meet Australian Olympians and experience Chinese culture during an exclusive four day program.

The competition called for children to write why they like their favorite sport in under 25 words and Aidan wrote about his love of Tae-kwon-do.

Aidan’s parents thanked his teacher, Neil Coverdale, for inspiring Aidan in his creative writing, something Year 5 students have spent much time on in class recently.

Annual givingAnnual Giving is coming up in August.

We depend on your support! Your commitment (as donor, volunteer or both) helps Scopus to educate the young people who are the future of our community.

Yom Ha’atzmaut celebrations started the moment students arrived at school with Israeli dancing, music and lots of blue and white birthday cake.

Secondary students and those from Smorgon Family Primary School tested their knowledge of Israel in a Jewish version of ‘Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader’ and then enjoyed traditional Israeli falafel and Israeli music at lunchtime.

Activities at all campuses included talent shows, flag parades and Israeli art and craft activities.

High School MusicalStudents followed their dreams on stage and in real life during three outstanding performances of Disney’s High School Musical. Presented by the Eva and Marc Besen School of Music and Susie and Eric Stock School of Drama, this was a feel good show with a message about being true to yourself and having the courage to try something new, even in the face of overwhelming opposition. With some very cool dance moves, wonderful songs and great characters, High School Musical was an amazing experience for those on stage and behind the scenes.

RABBI KENNARD WITH UPPER KINDER STUDENT, DION KLOOGER

From the PrincipalI was proud to represent the College at the recent ‘2020 Symposium’ where members of the Jewish Community were invited to present their ideas for the future to Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Ministers. My group produced far-reaching and innovative proposals for the areas of education and productivity.

Like the nation, Scopus is regularly planning for the future and assessing the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. In the near future we hope to become authorised by the International Baccalaureate Organisation as a ‘World School’ offering the Primary Years Programme and Middle Years Programme and this will drive ongoing development of teaching and learning in the College.

Meanwhile we are increasing our use of technology in classrooms and in other areas of learning, and enhancing and extending our regular communication with parents. Further ahead we will be ready for the implications of the National Curriculum, due to come into use in 2011, and for what may be an increasingly challenging environment in which independent schools like Scopus operate, providing their own distinct ethos and standards of excellence.

The most visible way in which Scopus will be preparing for the future is undoubtedly our biggest physical transformation since the school moved to Burwood in 1952. Work will begin next year, our 60th anniversary, on the construction of a brand new primary school at the Gandel Campus in Burwood and 2009 will also see the beginning of the complete redevelopment of Gandel Besen House.

Plans also include a comprehensive renovation of the secondary school, the upgrading of sporting facilities and the beautification of our entrances and surroundings. The result will be a Scopus fit for the present day and the future – an environment uniquely suited to teaching and learning, in an inviting and sustainable setting.

In the physical and organisational realm, we are building Scopus for 2020 and beyond.

Rabbi James Kennard, Principal

High School MusicalStudents followed their dreams on stage and in real life during three outstanding performances of Disney’s High School Musical. Presented by the Eva and Marc Besen School of Music and Susie and Eric Stock School of Drama, this was a feel good show with a message about being true to yourself and having the courage to try something new, even in the face of overwhelming opposition. With some very cool dance moves, wonderful songs and great characters, High School Musical was an amazing experience for those on stage and behind the scenes.
