Site Improvement Priorities – Following significant data analysis the improvement priorities for 2018 include Numeracy achievement; Literacy achievement and Attendance improvement. We will continue our focus on STEAM across the curriculum and improving engagement through effective pedagogy. These will contribute to measurable improvement in the priority areas. On 9 March our pupil free day program for staff was a Day at Tonsley that included a Flinders University STEM careers presentation; ASMS capabilities workshop; Tonsley precinct tour and individual tours of organisations and businesses based at Tonsley such as PEET, Mining Core Drill Library, Innovyz; and CoHAB. All staff including SSOs participated in the program and enjoyed the opportunity to see the amazing happenings at Australia’s first innovation district (and our close neighbour). Open Night was a very successful and enjoyable event. The weather was very kind, the visiting parent and student numbers surpassed previous and recent totals and interest in enrolling at Pasadena High School was evident. Thanks to the staff who contributed to the event and special acknowledgement and thanks to all of the students who contributed to the success of the event through their displays and demonstration.

Attendance – does it really matter?

Regular and punctual attendance at school is necessary for students to learn effectively and to achieve success in their learning.

Parents/Carers have a legal responsibility to ensure children between the ages of 6 and 17 years attend school, irrespective of distance from the school or whether a child has a disability or not.

We all have days when we are too unwell to attend school. Genuinely sick people should avoid work or school both to give themselves the time to convalesce and also to avoid the spread of illness to others. However sometimes we are tempted to take that extra day when we are really well enough to be at work or school, especially now we are heading into autumn/winter.

If you have any concerns about your child’s attendance we are keen to support and work with you to improve the situation.

If you wish to discuss this further please contact your child’s care group teacher in the first instance.

Ocean Mural

The mural is called ‘Evolution, Pollution and Solution’ and has been a yearlong project. It began when the Unit students were in year 9 as an interdisciplinary collaboration between the science and art curriculum in conjunction with Amy Hamilton from Flinders University. The mural explores the impact of humanity on the world’s oceans and demonstrates different art techniques and styles including; indigenous dot painting, pop art and mix media collage. The mural has recently been completed by the year 10 Unit students during their citizenship and pathways to success lesson. It will be exhibited at the Warriparinga Youth Event held on Friday April 13 and hosted at the Living Kaurna Cultural Centre. To conclude the project, the students will attend the Youth Event and view their mural on display whilst interacting with other young people in their community.

Citizenship in the Community

The Unit Year 8 and 9 students are undertaking a project in the school grounds. Brett Richards, our school’s Groundsman, asked the students if they would help in restoring 2 benches in the school’s courtyard. They were happy to help out. Firstly, they undertook some research to gain some ideas on how the finished bench could look. Most students wanted to paint some native animals and plants onto the bench, whilst others liked the idea of painting bright colours to brighten up the area. Firstly, the benches needed to be sanded down to remove the old paint and varnish. Brett then randomly placed some tape over the bench to create straight lines and patterns; the students then chose a colour to paint in the blocks.

The final stage of the project will include painting native animals/leaves onto the colours, writing their names and sealing the benches to preserve the wood and their hard work.

Sustainability at Pasadena High School Each year the Unit students engage in a range of sustainability projects which support a healthier and cleaner environment. This year, the Year 12 students are continuing the good work and coming up with suggestions on how to continually improve their understanding of sustainability and their role in it.

Recycling

At school, we have been collecting the paper and cardboard recycling materials from every classroom and placing the paper and cardboard in the yellow bin. We also collect from the Admin offices and the Resource Centre. Every 2 weeks we place these bins on the pavement to be collected by the City of Mitcham East Waste Recycling Team. We also collect refundable recycling materials, including bottles, cans and cartons. Daws Road Recycling Centre collect these materials and recently we visited them to see what happens to our bottles and cans. Justin explained the process to us and we learnt that all the cans and bottles get compressed in a special machine and are picked up each week by Statewide Recycling to be recycled back into new products. South Australia has led the way in refundable recycling and now NSW and Queensland will also collect refundable containers in the next few years. In the future, this work will become more specialised and technical and people will be able to place their own refundable items into an auto-sort to get their money. Nicholas

Sustainability Tips Now might be a good time to take shorter showers. We have not had much rain over the summer and rain is not forecast in the near future. The ground is very dry and the plants are struggling to survive.

We can all do our bit by using less water and this is easy to do when we have a shower.

We can:

Use the first thirty seconds to get ourselves wet.

Turn off the water during the middle part of the shower when you wash yourself with soap or body wash.

Finally, turn the water back on to rinse off the soap in a minute or less. You could also turn down the temperature of the hot water by 1 or 2 degrees Celsius. This is a great way to save water and energy and help the environment. It is also an excellent way to save $$$$$$$. Amarhys

Pizza Garden

We all like pizza! So we decided to plant a garden with vegetables and herbs that we could use to make our pizzas. But, before we planted out our chosen seeds and seedlings we had to research the plants that grow well during the autumn and winter months in Adelaide. At this time of year there is less sun and, hopefully, more rain. Between us we decided to plant some corn, peas, beans, onions, garlic and oregano. We wanted to plant some tomatoes but we found out they will not grow at this time of year. We have also planted some basil but we are waiting to see if this will grow. Each week we have been watering our garden and pulling out the weeds. We have also added worm tea from our wormery to give the soil and our plants some extra nutrients. Hopefully, next term we will be able to pick our vegetables to make our pizzas.

Unit Year 10 Excursion to Darlington Upgrade Project On the morning of Monday 9 April the Unit Year 10 students had the opportunity to visit the local civil engineering project at Darlington.

The idea to visit this site began last year when the students were studying earthquakes and earthquake resistant structures. They learnt that the Darlington area lies on the Eden-Burnside fault-line and wondered if Flinders University and hospital, and the new roads and bridges would offer some resistance to earth movements. Jay and Jack decided that they wanted to visit this area to investigate further. We were welcomed by Natasha Wojcik, the Stakeholder and Community Engagement Coordinator and Nigel Hird, the Structures Manager. Nigel provided us with a brief overview of the project including the vast range of engineering specialities involved, including civil, structural, mechanical and automotive. He also explained the role of an engineer and what they do. Nigel also explained that Digital Engineering will shape the future of construction.

After this introductory talk we were provided with work safety vests and hard hats to wear to the Southern Compound to see the new bridge close up. The students asked a range of questions: 1. Is there a bicycle lane to go on the bridge? Ans: Yes, there will be at least one cycle lane on the bridge. 2. Where will the new metro train line be placed? Ans: It will go over South Road and next to Flinders Hospital car-

park. 3. When will this project be finished and the roads and bridges

open? Ans: August 2019.

No. 2 6 13 April 2018 No

4. How long will it take to move the new bridge into place? Ans: We will close the surrounding roads from a Friday night until Monday

morning but we hope it will take less time, just like the previous bridge. 5. Who will cut the ribbon during the opening ceremony? Ans: This is still to be announced. 6. Who decides the artwork and colours for the sides of the bridge? Ans: An Urban Architect designed the art work but the government

decided on the colours. The artwork is similar to the designs on the South Road Anzac Bridge.

7. How is this bridge earthquake resistant? Ans: We used extra-long reinforced rods in the concrete pylons. Also, the

joins between the sections of the bridge are similar to a ball and socket joint in our shoulders which allows easy movement when the earth moves.

8. Where did you get your materials from? Ans: We try to use local, South Australian products but we did buy some

materials from Tasmania and Victoria.

The students also learnt that it was important to wear the safety gear when you visit the work site and that the bridges were moved by special computerised vehicles to be positioned correctly.
