• Screened a total of 150 children– Quite a number of

students returned home for the weekend

– (very cold so did not want to detain the children)

• Only 2 needed glasses

• Quite a number of cases of – conjuntivitis and/or

keratitis (inflammation of the cornea)

Risk factors

• Everyone is at risk of developing cataracts – age is the single greatest risk factor

• By age 65 about half of all Americans

have developed some degree of lens

clouding, although vision may not be

significantly impaired

Other factors that increase risk of cataracts include:

• Diabetes

• Family history of cataracts

• Previous eye injury or inflammation

• Previous eye surgery

• Prolonged use of corticosteroids

• Excessive exposure to sunlight

• Exposure to ionizing radiation

• Smoking

What causes cataracts in children?What causes cataracts in children?

• Can be congenital or may develop during the first few months/years of life

• Inherited or related to metabolic or systemic abnormalities

• Many cases, cause unknown

• IF visually significant cataract occurs in a child,prompt surgery and rehabilitation required to

maximize visual development

(cataract does not allow the eyes to get proper visual stimulus to develop)
