Committing to the FutureAs we look back at the past year and forward to the future—our 20th year—we are grateful for the generosity of thosewho join Food for Others to provide free food to our struggling neighbors. During FY2014, an increasing number offamilies relied on this generosity to make ends meet with the high cost of living in Northern Virginia.

Households coming to Food for Others with emergency referrals increased by 18 percent this year. Wemet this demand by: • Providing food at our warehouse to families 23,018 times through the Emergency and USDA programs.• Serving individuals 27,803 times through the Neighborhood Sites Distribution Program.• Distributing 259,844 pounds of food to neighbors in need through our Community Partners program.• Serving weekend meals to students in need at 21% of Fairfax public elementary schools by distributing

198,534 pounds of food through our weekly Power Pack Program (P3).

In FY2014, our Board of Directors and staff completed a new five-year strategic plan to:focus programs on the evolving community needs; acquire nutritious food; collaborate with ourcommunity; invest in our volunteers; and, nurture our giving community.

Forging ahead to improve food security for neighbors in need, the Food for Others staff, volunteers, and donors workedtogether to find new resources and strengthen relations with existing partners.

We also faced new challenges this year. Even as demand for many of our services rapidly climbed, we grappled withreductions in two major sources of support. The Help the Homeless Program funded for many years by Fannie Maeended last year and one of our largest food donors relocated milk production; this combined to reduce our donations offunds and milk. Yet, we did not retrench our commitment to provide free food to our clients.

We ended the fiscal year boldly embracing our mission. When the tenant next door vacated space, we committed toexpanding the Food for Others warehouse to accommodate our growing programs. We will continue to provide the high-quality service that makes Food for Others special--a place where a small staff and more than 1,000 volunteers and anever-growing list of individual and organizational donors together provide food, respect, and hope to our clients.

With gratitude,

Annie Turner

Food for Others Programs

The number of families and individuals suffering from poverty inour area surprises many because of the affluent reputation ofNorthern Virginia. Yet hundreds of thousands facing the highcosts of living here cannot make ends meet without outside help.Whether they’ve lost a job, suffered a mental or physical healthsetback, or are struggling to overcome other obstacles toindependence, neighbors in need gain renewed strength thanksto Food for Others providing free food in these ways:

1) Warehouse-Emergency food to individuals and families. We provide 3-5 days’ worth of non-perishables, as well as milk and eggs and other fresh food to clients referred to our warehouse by social-service providers. Those clients who qualify based on low income may also receive monthly food supplements that we order on their behalf from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). 1.3 million pounds of food was distributed as emergency food in FY2014.

2) Neighborhood Sites distributions provide food to individuals and families via volunteers who pick up at our warehouse and deliver groceries to low-income neighborhoods, every evening Monday through Friday, serving 16 sites and approximately 400-600 families per week.

2

Page 4: Vision: “To be a leader in providing food security for our ... · Arash Hooshangi Kate Howsham Jim Hultgren Alexa Hurkamp & Erin Poplin Bob Irelun Sandra & Jessica Israel Kavita

3) Community Partners help us reach across the region. Food for Others provides bulk food items to about 20 community-based organizations on a weekly or bi-weekly basis to churches, homeless shelters, and other groups serving at-risk residents of Northern Virginia, including the homeless, homebound elderly, children from low-income homes, and others facing food insecurity.

4) The Power Pack Program (P3) of Food for Others provides weekend food for elementary school children in Fairfax Public Schools (29 schools and counting, targeting primarily children in the free and reduced-price meals program and others referred to us by school counselors). With a waiting list of schools, since last year we more than doubled the number of weekend food packs sent home fromFood for Others to fight hunger on weekends.

Every year hundreds of individuals and groups generously donatefood and funds; and, alongside our nine full-time employees, hundreds of volunteers donate more than 20,000 hours of theirtime through Food for Others, the hourly equivalent of nine morefull-time employees.

Looking Forward

In May 2014, Food For Others entered into a lease for additional warehouse and office space adjacent to the existing warehouse. In October, we dedicated the new space, which expands our warehouse by 50 percent.

Food For Others’ (FFO) Management Discussion and Analysis provides an overview of FFO’s financial activities for the fiscal yearended June 30, 2014. Since this information is designed to focus on the current year’s activities and resulting changes as compared toJune 30, 2013, it should be read in conjunction with FFO’s Financial Statements presented on the subsequent pages.

Financial Highlights

2014 was a busy year for FFO. The successful Power Pack Program (P3) more than doubled the number of pounds of food distributed.Meanwhile, FFO remained committed to serving the community through warehouse and neighborhood site distributions.

FY2014 FY2013 ChangeNumber of Schools Served - P3 24 19 5Pounds Distributed - P3 198,534 97,871 100,663Number of Households Served 116,144 117,569 -1,425Total Pounds Distributed 2,200,848 2,281,774 -80,926

To meet growing demand for services, FFO spent $314,207 on food purchases for the year ending June 30, 2014, an increase of$112,258 over the prior year. This increase in food purchases resulted in FFO having a net deficit for the year of $69,226. This is thefirst operating net deficit at FFO since FY2004. Typically, FFO aims to operate at break-even, but the FFO Board made theconscious decision to operate in a deficit for FY2014 in order to meet the demand of the community.

Statement of Financial Position Analysis

Even with the additional spending on food purchases, FFO still maintains a healthy cash and investment balance with approximately17 months of operating expenses in reserves. As of year-end, total assets exceed total liabilities by $2,006,677. This makeup providedFFO with the necessary resources to continue to meet demand and not be reliant solely on food donations, which decreased by231,148 pounds as compared to FY2013.

Statement of Activity Analysis

FFO experienced a decrease in total revenue of $370,400 FY2014 as compared to prior year. Primary factors were a decrease in donatedfood of $333,574, based on the Feeding America food valuation, and Fannie Mae discontinuing the Help the Homeless (HTH)program in which FFO grossed $133,995 in 2013. Since FFO was aware of the discontinuation of HTH, spending was reducedaccordingly to decrease expenses by $154,704, while ensuring that expense allocations for Program Services were not compromised.
