The American National Standards Institute leads standards,

conformity assessment, and related activities in the

United States of America.

Founded in 1918, ANSI is a private, non-profit organization.

ANSI is not a government agency or a standards developer.

U.S. Standardization System

Emphasizes private-sector standards solutions

Standards users drive activities

Provides a strong voice and greater authority to standards users and individual stakeholders

Strength from diversity

U.S. Standardization System

In the U.S. alone, there are more than 100,000 standards

These documents are being developed by:

hundreds of standards developing organizations (SDOs)

over 500 consortia

thousands of committees

Over 11,000 approved American National Standards

2015 ANSI Slide 6

The Public-Private Partnership

System is led by private sector

No single government agency has control over standards

Each agency determines which standards meet its needs

2015 ANSI Slide 7

Tools Facilitating Private Sector Participation

National Technology Transfer Advancement Act (NTTAA) encourages reliance on private sector conformity assessment activities including accreditation to reduce duplication and complexity.

OMB Circular A-119, “Federal Participation in the Development and Use of Voluntary Consensus Standards in Conformity Assessment Activities” implements NTTAA requirements.

“Good Practices” for Standardization

Standards should meet societal and market needs and should not be developed to

act as barriers to trade

In Other Words…

Global relevance is not measured by who developed

the standard, or where.

Use in the global marketplace is the

best measure of an international

standard

2015 ANSI Slide 15

Multiple-path Approach

ANSI and U.S. stakeholders take multiple-path approach

ANSI is proud to be U.S. member body to ISO and IEC (via

USNC)

Globally relevant standards may be developed by ISO, IEC,

or any other standards developer that adheres to

WTO/TBT principles

Users decide which standards meet their needs, which

SDOs they want to work with
