This is the time our Motherland was waiting for long.
We must hurry up lest our chance is lost for ever? How long would she
wait, this dear Motherland of ours for her children to wake up from the
slumber from ignorance from their worthless dissipating pre occupations?
How long can she go abegging to feed her children? Others laugh at her,
throw mud at her, call her mad. n a fren!y they tear her clothes apart.
"et, no curse, ever escapes her lips. #he only smiles and hangs her head.
Her own coffers are full, her soils riche, her wealth untapped, yet her chil$
dren go without food or go elsewhere to eke out a living.
Her mountain%s streams and forests resound with music, eternal melodies
flowing down from far off centuries, yet ever fresh, sweet and invigourat$
ing. &ut alas, her children have no ears. They dance to alien tunes.
They have all the time to gobble up facts and figures and to pose as
knowledgeable, yet have no time left to take a sip from the cup of nectar
that Mother holds in her hands'
Her clothes are torn and tattered. &ut who can weave today that e()uisite
garment of unity with diversity, strength with delicacy, beauty with utility?
Who knows the magic of mi(ing all the colours up to produce that intense
glow of white, the colour of love?
#weetness still pervades her countryside, her villages and the dwellings of
the poor and oppressed. "et on the surface, nothing but the all devouring
currents of cruelty, violence and gross indifference to the values of life.
Which temple will ring its bells to herald the arrival of the new era? *rom
whose orchards $ will the springs of new life sprout? *rom where will thecall come again, from the shores of +anyakumari or the heights of the
Himalayas.?
rgency is in the air. Time for offering is nearing. Where are her children
who would renounce their all for her sake, who would wipe her tears,
clothe her fresh in a mantle of love, compassion and harmony? Who would
give her back her golden sceptre and reinstate her on her throne of -ter$
nal lory?
The dawn is breaking, still we continue to sleep on. We are busy building
temples in brick and mortar, but refuse to build them in our hearts where
they should truly be. We are not ready with our offering.

continued...................continued...................continued...................continued...................
We are not ready to make any sacrifices nor to transform ourselves ever so
slightly. /ike the proverbial donkey, we are busy carrying the load of sandal$
wood on our backs.
sn%t it time to spread the message of love, compassion and tolerance? sn%t it
time to serve the lowest and the lowliest, for, there the Mother has taken her
shelter now? sn%t it time renounce selfishness, self aggrandi!ement, domina$
tion in the name of caste, creed and se( and hundreds of false, degrading,
self annihilating notions?
t is time to wash away the humilating encrustations on the body of our Moth$
er, The time has come to make an offering of the whole of our lives.
The 0ltar is ready, Mother is waiting.
1enunciation and #ervice are the offerings2 3iscipline and #elf$
transformation, the watchwords. nity in 3iversity is the theme, Harmony
and 4eace the goal. Hard work and dedication the rule.
The conch shell is sounding. /et us hurry up lest the time for offering slip by
once again.

how he released the world religions from the cages
in which they are *ept and allowed them to fly to
the infinite freedom of ruth.

same time whose grand !rilliant intellect
would conceive of such no!le thoughts as
would harmonise all conflicting sects, not
only in India !ut outside of India, and

hat is how Swami )ive*ananda in-
troduced his 1aster Sri +ama*rishna "ar-
amahamsa in his famous lecture on Bhe
Sages of India6. o Swamii, he was the!est of avatars whom he worshipped as
one who came to esta!lish #harma, who
was also an em!odiment of all #harma.
hat is a !eautiful theme for contempla-
tion which ta*es one !ac* to the words of
Sri Krishna in the $hagavad ita,
Ewhenever virtue su!sides and vice pre-
vails I come down to help man*indF. In his
remar*a!ly, elevating lecture on 1y 1as-
ter, Swamii recalls these words and adds
that E whenever this world of ours, on
account of growth, on account of added
circumstances, re?uires a new adustment,
a wave of power comes and as a man is
acting on two planes, the spiritual and the
material, waves of adustment come on

*rishna and his consort Sri Sarada #evi,
their divine play centered round the resur-
rection of human life to its pristine glory.
Swami )ive*ananda, who is considered as a
super model of man, an e:ample par e:cel-
lence, calls himself a wea* instrument ofhis 1aster and says, E7et not his character
!e udged !y seeing me. It was so great
that if I or any other of his disciples spent
hundreds of lives, we could not do ustice
to a millionth part of what he really was.F
he learned men of %alcutta recog-
nied in him an em!odiment of pure
*nowledge in spite of the fact that he had
hardly any formal education. Is it not true
of all the great world teachers that they
showed us that the path to true *nowledge
is not through !oo*s, not even through
schools, colleges or universitiesG his itself
should !e enough for our so-called modern
educationists to open their eyes if only
they would !other to do so.
According to Swamii, F8ot one
stands so high in !rilliance as that life
which I saw with my own eyes, under whose
shadow I had lived, at whose feet I have
learned everything - the life of Sri +ama-
*rishna "aramahamsa. /ere was a man whonever confined himself to mere theories,
!ut sought the depth of everything !y
practising immediately. hen would he car-
ry his theory into practice.F /e dived deep
to the su!tlest truth of every religion,
made his own heart strings resonate with it
and then produced a melody which was not
only sweet, harmonious and soul stirring,
!ut also carrying a message for the entire
humanity.
#istinctions and !arriers of caste and
creed melted away !efore the fire of his
in-depth awareness of the &neness of Su-
preme ruth. he !eam of his inner light
removed the shadows of dou!ts and s*ep-
ticisms which normally linger in the human
hearts as they try to comprehend the
truth propounded !y the various great
1asters from time to time.
he Ultimate ruth is straight and
simple and any!ody can realise it if one ap-
proaches it with truthfulness and simplici-
ty. his was the great message which ema-
nated from him. /e used to say, Ehe spir-ituality can !e communicated ust as really
as I can give you a flower.F
he language which he spo*e was
e?ually simple and straightforward in
which every sylla!le thro!!ed with the
awareness of the &neness of ruth. his
deep commitment to ruth made each
word he spo*e vi!rate as a ray of ruth.
/is words vindicated the scriptural dictum
that the words of a realied soul @ $rahma
0et not his character be 5udged
by seeing me. It was so great
that i6 I or any other o6 his
disciples spent hundreds o6 lives,
we could not do 5ustice to a

Jnani @e:press nothing !ut the ruth. 8o
wonder /is words stirred the souls of lis-
teners and transformed them. wo e:am-
ples would suffice to prove this.
/is wife Sarada 1ani, who was an
uneducated village !elle from a poor familyas*ed him one day as she was massaging his
feet as to how he udged her. "at came the
reply @ Byou are to me the oddess I wor-
ship at the temple6. Hou are also to me the
mother who gave !irth to me and who now
resides at the Bnaha!ath6 Cpart of the
#a*shineswar empleD - hese simple
statements had marvelous effect on Sara-
da 1ani. In worldly terms, she grew in
stature to !ecome a mother to one and all
who came to her. Spiritually she ac?uired
the aura of #ivine 1otherhood. he netresult was there for all to see @ the /oly
1other who adorned +ama*rishna 1ove-
ment as its Sangha Janani after Sri +ama-
*rishna6s mahasamadhi.
>?ually grand elo?uent were the
words through which he transformed his
!eloved 8aren into the future Swami )ive-
*ananda. All that he told him was that he
should not !e indulging in 8irvi*alpa Sa-
madhi and enoy the $liss all !y himself,
!ut he must devote himself for B1other6s
wor*6. After the mahasamadhi of the
1aster, the resonance of these words
made him not only discover the B1other6s
wor*6 !ut also his own role in the re!uild-
ing of 1other India through the regener-
ation of Sanatana #harma.
oday religion has !ecome a !y
word for dividing humanity, for violence,
and for destruction and degradation of
human personality. Sri +ama*rishna reit-
erated that to understand religion, one
should understand the real meaning of re-nunciation. It is through renunciation of
the superficial dogmas and !eliefs and
worldly temptations that one could come
to realise the &neness of truth in all reli-
gions and thus realie the one ruth in all
religions. &ut of this understanding of
the harmony of religions should evolve the
spiritual universal tolerance of the &ne-
ness, which alone can eliminate intoler-
ance, cruelties and violence perpetrated
in the name of religion.
he uni?ueness of Sri +ama*rishna
which mar*s him out from other world
teachers is that the he never taught a re-
ligion in his name, he never made any claimfor himself. o ?uote Swamii, Fhe left
every religion undistur!ed !ecause he had
realied that in reality they are all part
and parcel of &ne +eligion.F 8o wonder
that his own immaculate life !ecame in-
fused with the universal spirit and he
himself got transformed into a living em-
!odiment of Sanatana #harma. hus, did
he revitalie Sanatana #harma and re-
deem it from the o!livion into which time
Fhe left every religion undis-
tur!ed !ecause he had realied
that in reality they are all part
and parcel of &ne +eligion.F

Before enlightenment: Chop wood, carry water.
After enlightment: Chop wood, carry water.
old Zen saying
What an awesome saying this is. It shatters the illusion that
many of us carry in our minds about what true enlightenment is:
most of us probably picture a monk, sitting in a cave, meditating
for hours on end. The idea behind this Zen saying is mindful-
ness in every day activities. Not only does this raise conscious-
ness and awareness, but it also speaks the concept of gratitude.
Take any daily activity, such as walking into your place
of work. Dont just hang your head and stumble in through the
doors. Instead, be mindful. Be fully aware of your surroundings,
the parking lot, the sky and the clouds: take it all in. Breathe
deeply and live simply. Appreciate it all. Appreciate everything.
Taking pleasure in your everyday activities is a key concept of
the Zen philosophy.
