Tourist Visa (Uniform Schengen Visa)
The tourist visa is a nonimmigrant visa for a short-term stay in Italy or other Schengen
countries for foreign nationals who want to visit for tourism purposes.
To qualify for this type of visa, the applicant must fulfill the following requirements:
a) sufficient financial means of maintenance;
b) return tickets or autonomous means of transport;
c) availability of an accommodation (hotel reservation, host invitation, etc.).
In case of a host invitation, the inviting Italian citizen or foreign national regularly residing in
Italy must state in the letter of invitation that they will host the visa applicant.
The following requirements apply to minors who take part in touristic-humanitarian programs
approved by the Committee for the Protection of Foreign Minors (Comitato per la tutela dei
minori stranieri):
a) legal guardian’s consent to the expatriation of the minor
b) written authorization by the Committee for the Protection of Foreign Minors
For minors or students accompanied by their parents: a certificate of school attendance and, if
applicable, an authorization by the other parent
For minors and students who travel by themselves: a certificate of school attendance, the
authorization of the parents or legal guardian and demonstrated resources of the parents
N.B.: A tourist visa does not entitle you to work or study, or apply for a residence permit in
Italy.

Student Visa (Uniform Schengen Visa or National Visa)
The student visa is for persons who want to enter Italy for a limited period of time, either
short-term or long-term, to attend university, other academic courses or vocational training at
recognized and qualified institutes, and for persons conducting cultural or research activities.
The student visa is also issued to graduates from Italian universities who want to take the bar
exam, for the time period necessary.
If the studies involve health-care activities, the study title giving access to such activity must be
recognized by the Italian Ministry of Health.
This visa requires the minimum age of 14 years of the applicant.
For foreign minors (above the age of 14) who take part in a cultural exchange program at an
Italian high school, the organizing institution or the parents must obtain approval of the
program by the Ministry of University and Research (which delegates the school) and the
Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Office VI – General Direction for Promotion and Cultural
Cooperation.

Business Visa (Uniform Schengen Visa)
The Business Visa is a nonimmigrant visa for persons who want to enter Italy temporarily for
commercial purposes, for contract negotiarions, for training, or to verify the use and
functioning of instrumental goods bought or sold with commercial contracts and industrial
cooperation in Italy.
To qualify for this type of visa, the applicant must fulfill the following requirements:
a) qualification as “commercial operator” according to Italian law;
b) commercial purpose of the trip which the visa is applied for;
c) economic activity carried out by Italian commercial operators who invite the applicant;
d) sufficient economic means to cover for all expenses.

Mission order of the Tanzanian company, dated and duly signed by the company’s
person in charge whose name must also emerge from the Chamber of Commerce
company registration. The order must include all the information about the applicant as

functions, dated and duly signed;

Visa for Self-Employed (Uniform Schengen Visa or National Visa)
The visa for self-employed is either an immigrant or nonimmigrant visa for persons who want
to enter Italy permanently or for a limited period of time, either short-term or long-term. The
applicant must conduct his or her own business in accordance with Article 26, Law no.
286/1998.
New visas are issued to the following categories of employees:
- Entrepreneurs who engage in commercial activities of interest to the Italian economy;
- Freelance professionals;
- Shareholders and CEOs of limited companies;
- Artists of international fame or highly professional qualification, hired by public or
private entities;
- Craftsmen from non-EU countries who financially contribute to the investments made
by their co-nationals on Italian territory.
The assessment of whether a commercial activity is of “interest to the Italian economy” is at the
discretion of the Consular Office.
The visa for self-employed can be issued to shareholders or CEOs only if from the respective
Chamber of Commerce company registration emerges that the company has been operating in
Italy for at least 3 years.
The approval of the visa for self-employed persons who want to exercise entrepreneurial,
commercial or artisan activities is subject to the certificate issued by the competent Chamber
of Commerce stating the abstract availability of the necessary recourses for the business
establishment in Italy.
- All statements, certificates and substitutive documentation along with the permission
(nulla osta) by the police station must be submitted to the competent Consular Office.
- The non-EU worker must demonstrate the availability of accommodation as well as
proof of an annual salary from lawful sources and superior to the minimum amount
established by the law for the exemption from the participation to the sanitation
expenses, or alternatively, a corresponding guarantee by entities, Italian citizens, or a
foreign national resident in Italy.
The self-employed must not engage in an activity for anyone but the contractor who sponsored
the visa and cannot change his or her residence permit to a different kind.

Visa for Subordinate Labor (Uniform Schengen Visa or National Visa)
The visa for subordinate labor is either an immigrant or nonimmigrant visa for persons who
want to enter Italy permanently or for a limited period of time, either short-term or long-term,
to work in Italy.
The requirements and conditions to qualify for this visa are provided by the Articles 22, 24 and
27 of Law no. 286/1998 and Articles 29, 30, 31, 38 and 40, paragraph 14, of Presidential
Decree no. 394/1999, it being understood that Articles 49 and 50 of the Presidential Decree
remain valid for the exercise of professional activity.
SPORTS SECTOR:
The same requirements and conditions as provided by Article 27, paragraph 1, lett. p) of Law
no. 286/1998 and Article 40, paragraph 14, of Presidential Decree no. 394/1999, are also
applicable to the foreign nationals who want to engage in sports activities with amateur
associations different from those provided by Law no. 91/1981.
MARITIME SECTOR:
For employees of foreign companies who want to board Italian cruises to offer complementary
services, the visa will be issued upon the formal and written request of the respective
company.
For foreign sailors who want to board a ship under Italian flag and registered in the
International Registry, the visa is issued upon the request of the ship owner or his delegated
agent, supplied with the ship’s registration in the International Registry and the respective
table of fitting out. The validity period of the visa is subject to the expected duration of the
passage that emerges from the enrollment contract, if concluded, or a statement of the ship
owner. This visa application may be activated in advance; the visa will be issued regardless of
the sailor’s residence.
Foreign sailors who want to board or disembark from ships under foreign flag from or to
Italian ports shall apply for a transit visa.
JOURNALISM SECTOR:

This type of visa is also for journalistic correspondents officially accredited in Italy and
representatives of the foreign media, including members of the press, radio, TV, and print
industries by whom they collect a stable income. The visa application requires a Note Verbal
and is subject to the permission (nulla osta) by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Press Service.
DIPLOMATIC SECTOR:
Employees, who work for diplomatic or consular representations or international law
institutions with offices in Italy, diplomatic officials, or administrative or technical personnel at
the service of the abovementioned entities, must request a visa through diplomatic channels
with Note Verbal. The visa application is always subject to the permission (nulla osta) by the
Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Diplomatic Ceremonial Manual of the Republic, Office II.

Visa for Religious Workers (Uniform Schengen Visa or National Visa)
This type of visa is for persons who want to enter Italy for a short-term or long-term stay to
work in religious capacities such as the participation in religious events or clerical, religious or
pastoral duties. The applicant must be ordained to priesthood or enjoy an equivalent status in
his or her religious denomination, or work as a minister or in any other religious vocation. The
respective religious denomination must be listed by the Ministry of Interior.
To qualify for this type of visa, the applicant must fulfill the following requirements:
a) qualification as a minister of religion or equivalent status;
b) demonstrated religious nature of the event or the activities which the applicant intends to
engage in during his or her stay in Italy;
c) if the religious denomination does not fund the stay, the applicant must demonstrate the
availability of sufficient financial means to cover for all expenses.

4) demonstrated qualification as minister of religion or equivalent status;

origin.

Diplomatic Visa for Accreditation or Notice (National Visa)
The Diplomatic Visa for Accreditation or Notice is for persons who hold a diplomatic passport
and want to enter Italy or the Holy Sea permanently to engage in official duties or activities on
behalf of their national government.
The diplomatic visa is issued also to the members of the family unit who live together with the
applicant.
The visa shall be requested through diplomatic channels with a Note Verbal. The visa
application is subject to the permission (nulla osta) by the Ceremonial Service of the Ministry
of Foreign Affairs.

1) duly completed visa application form;
2) passport (valid at least 3 months beyond the departure date of your trip) ;

The mission visa is for persons who want to enter Italy for a limited period of time, either
short-term or long-term, to carry out his political or governmental duties or other public utility
function.
The applicant must hold a government position or work for a public administration, public
entity or international organization. Private citizens may be granted a mission visa if they are
deemed of public utility due to the importance of their functions for the bilateral relations
between Italy and their country of origin.
The mission visa is issued also to the members of the family unit who live together with the
applicant, even if the applicant himself or herself is exempt from the visa.

The invitation visa is a nonimmigrant short-term visa for persons who want to enter Italy upon
the invitation by entities, institutions, or public or private notorious organizations hosting
special events, or political, scientific or cultural manifestations. The inviting entity shall cover
for all expenses.
The visa may also be issued to the foreign national invited or summoned by the Italian Judicial
Authorities, for the duration indicated by the authority.

Visa for Sports Competitions (Uniform Schengen Visa)
The visa for sports competitions is a nonimmigrant visa for persons who want to enter Italy for
a short-term stay to participate in single competitions or a series of sport events, professional
or non-professional in nature, as athletes, coaches, technical directors or companions.
For the participation in either a professional or an official or friendly amateur competition in a
sport discipline recognized by the Olympic Committee, the applicant must submit a written
statement by the Italian National Olympic Committee (C.O.N.I.) or the involved Italian Sports
Federation confirming the reputation of the competition and the participation of the athlete or
team.
With regards to the single team members, the Consular Office will consider the name lists or
letters presented by the foreign sports entities indicating the qualification of each member.
The visa will be issued upon the demonstrated availability of sufficient financial means of
maintenance.

Visa for Medical Treatment (Uniform Schengen Visa or National Visa)
The visa for medical treatment is a nonimmigrant visa for persons in need of medical
treatment at an Italian accredited public or private health institution. The applicant may enter
Italy for a limited period of time, either short-term or long-term, based on the presumed
duration of the therapeutic treatment with the possibility of renewal for demonstrated
therapeutic needs.
The visa for medical treatment may also be issued the companion who assists the patient, upon
the demonstrated availability of sufficient financial means to cover for all expenses.

1) duly completed visa application form;
2) passport (valid at least 3 months beyond the departure date of your trip) ;
3) one passport-sized photo;
4) statement of the chosen health institution which must indicate the kind of treatment, the

expenses; trip reservation; demonstrated availability of accommodation for the companion
throughout the treatment period;
6) authorization of the Ministry of Health –or a specific regional resolution– for treatments
granted under the framework of authorized humanitarian intervention.

Visa for Family Reasons (National Visa)
The visa for family reasons is an immigrant visa for persons who want to enter Italy for a long-
term stay, permanently or for a limited period of time to reunite with their immediate relatives
who regularly reside in Italy with a residence permit valid for no less than one year issued for
subordinate labor, self-employment labor, asylum, studies or religious purposes.
The following categories of relatives are eligible for this type of visa:
a) spouse, not legally separated and above 18 years old;
b) underage children and step-children, also out of wedlock, at the expense of the foreign
national residing in Italy, or children born to a not married or legally separated couple,
provided that the other parent, if existent, gave his or her consent. To qualify as underage
children, the minors must not have reached the age of 18 at the moment of the permission
(nulla osta) request to the Single Desk of Immigration;
c) adult children dependent on the foreign national residing in Italy;
d) parents dependent on the foreign national residing in Italy.
The applicant’s status as “dependent on the foreign national residing in Italy” must arise from
the visa application.
The foreign national residing in Italy shall request the permission (nulla osta) by the Single
Desk for Immigration (Sportello Unico dell’Immigrazione) at the competent Prefecture for the
abovementioned categories of relatives. The permission (nulla osta) for family reasons must be
used within 6 months from the release date.

1) duly completed visa application form;
2) passport (valid at least 3 months beyond the departure date of your trip) ;
3) one passport-sized photo;
4) certificate attesting all requirements are fulfilled or, if in possession, the permission (nulla

Immediate relatives (spouse, direct descendants up to 21 years old, dependent direct
descendants above 21 years, and dependent direct ascendants) of an Italian, EU or EEA citizen

If they are subject to a visa obligation to enter national territory, they must not apply for a visa

Adoption Visa (National Visa)
The adoption visa is for minors who are subject to an adoption measure or pre-adoption
custody issued by the competent foreign authority in accordance with local legislation.
The visa application is subject to the authorization of the entry and permanent stay of the
minor by the International Adoption Commission.
In case of an adoption procedure started prior to the establishment of the International
Adoption Commission and the publication of the registry of authorized entities, the completion
of the procedure is subject to the following requirements:
a) declaration of eligibility to adopt, issued by the competent Italian Juvenile Court;
b) adoption measure or pre-adoptive custody issued by the competent foreign authority in
accordance with local legislation;
c) statement issued by the competent Italian Consular Office confirming that the adoption
measure is consistent with the legislation of the foreign state.

4) nominal authorization issued by the International Adoption Commission.

Re-entry Visa (National Visa)
The visa of re-entry is for foreign nationals who regularly reside in Italy but are not currently
in possession of their residence permit due to theft or loss of the document, or whose
residence permit expired (no more than 60 days ago), and want to re-enter Italy to continue
their long-term stay, for both a limited or permanent period of time.

4) denunciation of the theft or loss to the competent local police authorities;

Visa for “Elective Residency” (National Visa)
The visa for elective residence is an immigrant visa for persons who want to establish
themselves in Italy, and are able to maintain autonomously themselves without having to
engage in labor.
To this end, the applicant must supply sufficient and documented guarantees regarding the
availability of a habitat suitable for residency and extensive economic resources which are
expected to persist in future. Those resources shall arise from substantial incomes such as
pensions, the possession of real estate properties, stable economic-commercial activities, and
any funds other than subordinate labor.
In case of sufficient economic resources, this visa may also be granted to the spouse, underage
children, adult children, and parents all living together with and at the expense of the applicant.

The transport visa is for persons who want to enter Italy for a short-term stay to engage in
professional activity connected with the transport of goods or persons, both on land or by air
(haulage, charter flight equipment or privates).

professional status and the activity to be carried out during the stay.

Transit Visa – Airport Transit Visa (Limited Territorial Validity Visa)
Transit visas are nonimmigrant visas for persons traveling in immediate and continuous
transit through Italy en route to a third country. Thus, this type of visa requires a prearranged
itinerary which includes the reasonable transit through Italian territory as well as an entry
guarantee for the final destination.
Airport transit visas are nonimmigrant visas for foreign nationals who are subject to visa
obligation in order to access the international transit area of the airport during layovers
without entering Italian territory. This visa obligation represents an exception to the general
right of free transit through the international transit area of the airport.
To qualify for a transit visa the applicant must generally fulfill the same requirements as for a
short-term tourist visa. In addition, the foreign national must hold a visa for the country of final
destination, if applicable.
The visa application is handled by the consular office of the state where the transition airport is
located.
Please submit the following documents along with your visa application:
1) duly completed visa application form;
2) passport (valid at least 3 months beyond the departure date of your trip);
3) one passport-sized photo;
4) plane tickets or reservation;
5) invitation statement of the country of final destination;
6) demonstrated ability to cover travel and maintenance costs in Italy;
7) demonstrated availability of accommodation (hotel reservation, host invitation, etc.);
8) health insurance with a minimum coverage of EUR 30,000 for medical expenses, emergency
hospitalization and repatriation expenses.
N.B.: The above list of documents is merely illustrative. The Consular Office may request
additional documentation where deemed necessary.
