I. How Infectious Diseases Spread
• A. Infectious diseases are illnesses that pass from one person to another.
• B. Infectious diseases can spread through contact with infected person, a contaminated object, an infected animal or an environmental source.
Spread of Infectious Disease
• C. Viruses and Bacteria may enter a person through breaks in the skin, or they may be inhaled or swallowed.
• D. Others may enter the body through the moist openings of the eyes, ears, nose, mouth or other body openings.

E. Contact with an Infected Person• 1. What is direct contact?• Touching, kissing, hugging an infected personF. Contact with a Contaminated Object• 1. Contact with eating utensils, drinking from
a cup used by an infected person, drink water or eat food that an infected person has contaminated.

G. Contact with an Infected Animal• 1. Animal bites can spread rabies.• 2. TIck bites can transmit Lyme disease.• 3. Mosquito bites can spread Encephalitis. H. Contact with Environmental Sources• 1. Certain viruses and bacteria live naturally in
food, soil and water.• 2. Some bacteria can produce a toxin or poison
that causes deadly diseases.
II. Treating Infectious Diseases
• A. Fortunately many bacterial diseases can be treated with antibiotics.
• B. Antibiotics are chemicals that kill bacteria without harming a person’s cells.
• C. Antibiotic resistance results when some bacteria are able to survive in the presence of an antibiotic.
D. Common Bacterial Diseases
Tuberculosis • Symptoms: Fatigue, mild fever, weight loss,
night sweats, cough• How it Spreads: Inhaling droplets• Treatment: Antibiotics• Prevention: Avoid contact with people with
an active infection, vaccine
Bacterial Disease
Strep Throat• Symptoms: Fever, sore throat, swollen lymph
glands• How it Spreads: Inhaling droplets, contact
with contaminated object• Treatment: Antibiotic• Prevention: Avoid contact with infected
people or contaminated objects
F. Viral Diseases
• 1. Unlike bacterial diseases, there are currently NO medications that can CURE viral diseases.
Influenza (Flu)• Symptoms: High fever, sore throat, headache,
cough• How it Spreads: Contact with contaminated
objects, inhaling droplets• Treatment: Bed rest, drink plenty of fluids• Prevention: Vaccine
III. Preventing Infectious Diseases
• A. Vaccines are important tools that prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
• B. A vaccine is a substance introduced into the body to stimulate the production of chemicals that destroy specific viruses or bacteria.
• C. Vaccines activate the body’s natural defenses.
Prevention
• D. Other ways to protect against infectious diseases include keep your body healthy, eat nutritious food, get enough sleep, fluids and exercise.
• E. Hand washing is a simple yet effective way to prevent the spread of many infectious diseases.
