VPPs in South Australia
Moving beyond pilots, this is the real thing
A set of technical requirements have been
developed to ensure the batteries available
through the Scheme are safe and reliable. Battery
systems are also required to be virtual power
plant (VPP) capable.
This means the battery can – either at the
outset, or at a future point in time - be enrolled
as part of a VPP program, or remain standalone.
Some of the benefits of including VPP capable
systems in the Scheme include:
• households have a greater choice of products,
some which may require low or no upfront
costs
• increasing the amount of storage-generation
in the energy market – reducing the state’s
energy demand and therefore providing
benefit to all South Australian customers, not
just those who receive the subsidy.
A VPP is a means of aggregating
behind the meter energy resources
to deliver services into wholesale
markets that traditional have been
delivered by large generation
assets. These services may include:
- Frequency Control (FCAS)
- Demand Response
- Contingency Reserve
- Fast Frequency Response
