Dear Members of the Advent Family, Concert Series Patrons, and Attendees,

We are grateful to God for the provision of our Cathedral Concert Series, and for your dedicated support. Sadly, our 2019-2020 season was cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In these unusual times, the Advent Music Ministry is committed to presenting you with a Virtual Concert Series for the fall portion of our 2020-2021 season. While we are not able to gather in person, we will present online performances recorded or broadcast live from the Cathedral Church of the Advent, as we are safely and technologically able to do. Our plans for the second half of the season are under way, and we will make plans for future in-person concerts to occur when we are eventually able to gather safely.

I pray that the music offered this season will provide the assurance of God’s abundant love and grace during this weary time.

Cathedral Concert Series

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 5 - 7:00 p.m. Charles Kennedy, organ In addition to being the year of a pandemic, 2020 also happens to be the 150th anniversary of the birth of Louis Vierne, the French organist and composer who was for over half of his life titular organist of Notre-Dame in Paris. Our Associate Organist and Director of Music, Charles Kennedy, will play music by Vierne and other composers on this opening concert for our virtual series.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 19 - 7:00 p.m. THE PILGRIM’S PROGRESS Music by Ralph Vaughan Williams

Kathryne Overturf, mezzo-soprano Randall Mayo, bass Frederick Teardo, piano The Cathedral Choir In celebration of the Advent’s parish-wide reading of John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress, our music ministry presents our second virtual concert of the season performing music of Ralph Vaughan Williams. From his own opera entitled The Pilgrim’s Progress, he extracted seven songs to create a song cycle that sets an assortment of texts from Scripture, Bunyan, and others. Cathedral Choir members Kathryne Overturf and Randall Mayo will perform six of these songs, accompanied by our Director of Music on the piano. In addition, the Cathedral Choir will offer a performance of Vaughan Williams’s Valiant-for-truth, a moving choral setting of an excerpt from Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress.

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 10 - 7:00 p.m. Frederick Teardo, organ Our Director of Music, Frederick Teardo, will perform an organ recital on the 100-rank Grieb-Williams organ featuring music for the Advent and Christmas seasons.

A SERVICE OF LESSONS & CAROLS ON CD The Cathedral Choir recorded A Service of Advent Lessons & Carols in 2018. The CD includes readings from the Old and New Testaments and hymns rooted in passages from the Bible.
