About

The background for this Project was to discover innovative ways in which ICT could be integrated into the classroom through Active Learning. Creativity and innovation in learning and teaching are important because they can help develop learners’ ability to think and act creatively. In turn, this helps encourage self-expression, motivation and increases satisfaction. Active Learning is a major part of Building the Curriculum 2 and Curriculum for Excellence will bring together, for the first time, the curriculum for the pre-school sector and the early years of primary as one level. I aim to promote pre-school approaches, such as learning through play, then extend them into the early years of primary school through the use of ICT. I am in no doubt that this is a fun way of supporting learning within the classroom. Using ICT, within active learning, offers all pupils the opportunity to learn in a variety of environments and also to negotiate how and what they learn.

The Project involved taking a fresh look at planning, teaching and learning and organisation of the learning environment with a specific focus on the use of ICT. The idea was to take forward Curriculum for Excellence and improve the continuity of the learning experience for children in the transition from Nursery into P1. A more informal approach to learning, enhanced by the use of ICT, in Primary 1 was adapted. This was similar to the nursery environment, tailored more closely to the needs of each learner which provided greater continuity in the learning activities already experienced by the pupils. We saw the necessity for more collaborative working to accommodate the sharing of early level experiences and outcomes and to provide rich opportunities for progression and depth in learning for every child. All areas of the classroom had at least one ICT toy or piece of equipment available for use.

Feedback from pupils and staff from school

Curriculum for Excellence

Technologies

•Feedback from children and staff has found that using ICT toys has been extremely beneficial when motivating the pupils.•A fully integrated approach to ICT within the classroom, with literacy and numeracy as a central focus, ensured that all pupils were fully equipped for effective interdisciplinary learning.•The range and character of activities provided, catered for all children to find something relevant which will engage and sustain their interest•Children who needed help with communication, language and literacy skills, or had English as a second language, became actively engaged in learning through well-planned sensory experiences•Opportunity was provided for pupils to learn the same thing in different ways or at different times in their development.

Next Steps

The project has been so successful that it is a fully integrated approach to the learning and teaching within the classroom and has lasted the whole year.Active Learning and ICT will again be a focus for the Primary One class next session. The hope is that it will be rolled out to other stages of the school. Also that there will be a written policy saying that it will become a major part of the learning and teaching within the school.
