Tomakemattersworse,womencouldnotbethinkersorartistsbecause–accordingtotradition–womendidnothaveenoughintelligence.Forthesamereason,womencouldnotstudyatschoolsoruniversities.Virginiawantedtolearn,butshecouldn’tborrowbooksattheuniversitylibrary!Thismadeherverysadandangry.Luckily,herfamilyhadalargelibraryathomeandVirginiareadandread!Shewasself-educated.

In1912shemarriedLeonardWoolf.In1914theFirstWorldWarstarted.In1917VirginiaandLeonardstartedtheirownpublishinghouse,calledthe

HogarthPress.VirginiaandLeonard,andtheHogarthPress,werepartofthe

BloomsburyGroup,agroupofartistsandthinkerswholivedintheneighbourhoodofBloomsburyinLondon.VirginiaandLeonardpublishedT.S.Eliot’sTheWasteland,averyimportantauthorinpoetry.TheyalsopublishedSigmundFreud’scompleteworks-whenFreudwasnotfamous!

Atthistimeshewaswritingarticlesfornewspapers,too,becausefirstsheworkedasajournalist.Thenshewroteherownstories,novelsandessays.BetweenWWI(1914–18)andWWII(1939–45),inonlyfouryears,shewrotefourofhermostfamousworks:thenovelsMrs.Dalloway,TotheLighthouse,andOrlandoandtheessayARoomofOne’sOwn.

Shewroteabouthowgenderrolescan’tmakeushappybecausewearehuman,wearemore!Shedenouncedthatwomenwerealwayspoorandthattheyneededmoney,independence,freedombecausetheywerehuman.Sheanalysedthegraveinjusticeofthesituationofwomen–insocietyandinhistory,wherewomenwereignored.Shesaid,
