Virginia Partnerships Work Toward Renewable Energy
Rail Services Expand Ports Reach
Volume 75, No. 10October 2011
Maersk Line Ltd. and Apex Offshore Wind are partnering to develop utility-scale wind
farms in the United States.
Apex, based in Charlottesville, has already made “substantial progress” in developing offshore projects and establishing relationships to reach their goal of developing offshore winds in the United States capable of producing 54 gigawatts of power by 2030.
Maersk Line Ltd., the Norfolk-based U.S. subsidiary of A.P. Moller-Maersk, brings to the table its maritime services and two new ships, each nearly 500 feet long, designed to deliver wind turbines.
This is the second such partnership in Virginia. Spanish wind giant Gamesa Technology Corp. and Newport News Shipbuilding have been working together to install test wind turbines off Cape Charles.
Offshore wind proponents say Virginia is positioned with its deep water port and shipbuilding industry to take advantage of the new U.S. drive to develop offshore wind. The winds, ocean depths and proximity to the electrical power grid, also made Virginia an ideal location for offshore wind development.
Norfolk Southern Corp. and CSX Transportation both opened new services in October that
expand the Port of Virginia’s reach to the Southeast and Midwest.
A new six-day-a-week service oper-ated by Norfolk Southern will service Greensboro. With a focus on textiles, furniture, retail, chemical, and agriculture industries; the city is considered a load center for imports and exports of those cargoes in central North Carolina. The service is already supported by two ocean carriers that have committed to its use and it is generating interest from other carriers as well.
CSX opened an international con-tainer service linking the Port of Virginia to its intermodal ramp in Northwest Ohio. This development adds new connections to customers in Findlay and Toledo, Ohio, as well as Ft. Wayne,
Indiana. Several manufacturers are located within these three markets.
Jerry Bridges, Executive Director for the Virginia Port Authority, says he sees an opportunity for Virginia to test the “big-ship, big-reach theory.” The amount of cargo moving across the port will grow as the frequency of big ships calling on Virginia increases. Much of that cargo will be heading to new markets via rail.

Maersk Celebrates Ship Naming of U.S. Flag Tanker
On September 30, Maersk Line, Limited (MLL) celebrated the naming of its fourth U.S. flag
tanker, the MAERSK PEARY, at the Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center in Norfolk.
The ice-classed vessel was aptly named after Rear Admiral Robert E. Peary, “because he was a Navy man, he was an explorer and he was somebody to be reckoned with,” stated Mr. John Reinhart, President and CEO for MLL. “By naming the tanker after Admiral Peary, we uphold his legacy as a model of courage, determination and integrity,” Reinhart continued. Six direct descendants of Peary’s, including two great-grandsons, attended the ceremony.
“Norfolk is the home port for the MAERSK PEARY, and it is proudly displayed on her stern,” said Mrs. Reinhart, wife of John Reinhart and the vessels godmother. In a time-honored fashion to bring good fortune to the ship and her crew, Mrs. Reinhart blessed the ship and broke a bottle of champagne against the ships light blue hull.
As part of her ship calls, MAERSK PEARY will sail to Thule Air Force Base, Greenland and McMurdo Station, Antarctica, delivering fuel to support military operations and research at the top and bottom of the globe. Stephen M. Carmel, Senior Vice President of Maritime Services at MLL, stated, “We have ships working all over the world, but this will be the first time we have an opportunity to add polar operations, Greenland in the Arctic and McMurdo in the Antarctic, to our company’s resume. It is truly exciting that the MAERSK PEARY will allow MLL to join the somewhat exclusive club of polar operations and we are looking forward to that work.”
MAERSK PEARY embarked on her maiden voyage under the U.S. flag early on October 1, 2011, with expectations of arriving at McMurdo Station in January 2012 and then Thule Air Force Base next summer.

Two Old Dominion University (ODU) undergraduate students received a Carter T. Gunn Memorial Scholarship for the 2011-2012 school semesters. Virginia Maritime Association (VMA) established the Memorial Scholarship in 1980 to assist students interested in pursuing a
career in the maritime industry.
Ms. Lindsay Hrones is currently a junior at ODU studying Maritime and Supply Chain Management with a minor in Marketing. Upon graduation in the winter of 2012, Ms. Hrones hopes to find a career that allows her to work on the development of Virginia’s inland waterways as a primary mode of intermodal transportation.
Ms. Laura Ancian is majoring in Maritime and Supply Chain Management and plans to pursue a career in the shipping industry with a special emphasis on intermodal transportation.
Kemper Consultinggovernment relations
The Virginia Maritime Association (VMA) hosted the 25th Annual Chesapeake Bay Feast, raising funds for the Maritime Issues Council Political Action
Committee (PAC). In 2000, the VMA established the PAC in an effort to advance issues and concerns of the maritime industry with the Virginia General Assembly. In addition to supporting VMA’s PAC, the event provided a great atmosphere for the approximately 400 that attended to socialize with customers and peers while enjoying great food.
Sponsorships are a large part of the success of this fund-raiser and we would like to take this opportunity to extend a special thanks to our sponsors.

I am extremely pleased that Ace Hardware Corp. has recognized the world-class capabilities of Virginia’s premier transportation system that includes the Port of Virginia, one of the largest intermodal networks on the East Coast.”
Ace Hardware, headquartered in Oak Brook, Illinois, was founded in 1924 by a group of hardware store owners. Today, it is the largest hardware cooperative in the industry, with more than 4,500 independently owned stores across the U.S. Ace cooperative employs hundreds of Virginians between its 54 small business owners and its regional distribution center in Prince George County, according to Jim Cheng, Virginia Secretary of Commerce and Trade.
The Suffolk site is part of a planned 5.8 million square-foot complex built on 900 acres by CenterPoint Properties Trust, a development firm, also based in Oak Brook. Ace Hardware specs requested property with 336,969 square-feet, with plans to expand to 500,000 square feet.
Ace Hardware looked at several sites along the Gulf and East Coasts to establish its distribution center. “Suffolk is only 30 miles from the Port of Virginia, which is the most modern port in the United States,” stated Lori Bossmann, an Ace Hardware Senior Vice President in a news release. “We are confident that the Ace Hardware Import Re-Distribution Center in Suffolk will allow us to more efficiently ship goods to our East Coast retailers,” said Tim Duvall, Supply Chain Director for Ace.
On Friday, October 7th, the Virginia Maritime Association (VMA) and the United States Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads (USCGSHR) hosted the 13th annual
Towing Vessel Safety Seminar held at the U.S. Navy Farrier Firefighting School in Norfolk.
Approximately 100 mariners attended the event. The morning session covered an overview on Subchapter M regulations and instructions in basic fire chemistry, basic firefighting and fire safety. In the afternoon, the attendees donned firefighting gear and received hands-on training in fighting lagging, electrical, and Alpha fires. They also participated in a main space fire demonstration.
Sixteen teams participated in the 4th Annual Tug Boatman’s Challenge. Moran Towing Corp. came in first place.Second place was taken by a team consisting of mariners from three separate companies: C & P Tug and Barge, W. F. Magann Corp., and C & M Industries. McAlister Towing of Virginia came in third.

VMA HIGHLIGHTS
6
As September began, the effects of Hurricane Irene were still being felt in the Port. VMA participated
in various meetings, including those held by Virginia International Terminals and U.S. Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads, to discuss lessons learned that will be beneficial in the planning and recovery for future storms.
The Virginia Offshore Wind Devel–opment Authority (VOWDA), chaired by VMA’s Art Moye, met September 7. The Authority took action on matters related to use of the Chesapeake Light Tower for the collection of wind data, ascertaining public concerns and support for offshore wind, legislative priorities and preparing recommendations for the General Assembly.
Throughout September, VMA met with several of our elected leaders to continue fostering relationships and an understanding of the maritime industry. Most of our political leadership appreciates the Port as an economic engine for Virginia, but it is important they understand the issues that could impede or improve this economic engine. As the “Voice of the Port,” the VMA provides them with information that allows them to make informed decisions on matters affecting the maritime industry.
The VMA continues to represent the interests of the maritime community on the Hampton Boulevard Traffic Congestion Review Panel which works with the City of Norfolk to reduce traffic congestion on that major artery. During
the September 21 meeting, Norfolk Police reported that 214 citations were issued for moving violations along Hampton Boulevard during the one month period of August to September; with only 2 of those citations issued to commercial trucks. It was also reported ODU has stepped up efforts to incentivize students to carpool and reduce traffic on Hampton Boulevard.
Plans for renovating the VMA building have been steadily progressing. During September, several meetings took place with officials from the City of Norfolk to review the architectural plans, discuss the City’s design requests to match the surrounding streetscape, and review the approval processes for the architectural plans.

Terminal Operators CommitteeSEPTEMbER 9 – The committee reassessed and confirmed the need to move forward with a redefined mission to “Provide a forum to discuss issues of concern and interest that affect terminal operators within the port community; with a focus on federal, state and local regulatory issues and the promotion of the port’s terminal operations.” The committee stressed the importance of including and serving all types of cargo terminals by addressing their interests and promoting their services to attract more business.
International Trade Symposium CommitteeSEPTEMbER 14 – The committee kicked off planning for VMA’s 2012 International Trade Symposium to be held May 3 with a discussion of what topics may be timely and interesting in the Spring of 2012 and ways to increase attendance.
Annual banquet CommitteeSEPTEMbER 15 – The committee’s early planning discussions for VMA’s 92nd Annual Maritime Banquet revolved around selection of a keynote speaker. Other topics included suggestions for entertainment during the banquet, recommendations for a networking event the evening before the banquet, and ticket pricing.
Towing & barge Operators CommitteeSEPTEMbER 22 – While the committee touched on several regular agenda items, the focus of the meeting was the Notice of Proposed Rule Making published by U.S. Coast Guard known as Subchapter “M.” The new regulations will establish safety regulations governing the inspection, standards, and safety management systems of towing vessels. This is the most sweeping regulatory action the towing industry has faced and the committee discussed how to address areas of concern during the public comment process which ends December 9.
