Annual Report

I want to thank each and every one of you for being a supporter of Virginia Beach CASA. We have had an exciting and challenging year. Judy Kurtz retired as Executive Director of our organization after 5 years of dedicated service. She will be missed and we will continue to engage her for valuable input throughout the months and years to come! Through an exhaustive search, we have hired Season Roberts as our new Executive Director. If you have not already met Season, I urge you to reach out to her and give her a call or e-mail to welcome her to the organization, and share with her your thoughts and aspirations for Virginia Beach CASA. Through the support of an anonymous donor, we are in the process of relocating our office into a larger space within our current building on the City of Virginia Beach Municipal campus. Our new office will open in January 2013. With this move, we will have additional offices and space for our Volunteer Coordinators to better serve our CASA Advocates. Now, more than ever, we need your financial assistance with the operations of Virginia Beach CASA. Our goal is to expand our number of Volunteer Coordinators so that we can provide advocacy services to more child abuse and neglect cases that come before the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court in Virginia Beach. Currently, we only serve about 30% of the child abuse and neglect cases. We urgently need to increase our coverage of the cases being brought before the court. Research has shown that in child abuse and neglect cases that have a CASA volunteer, the children are less likely to renter the child welfare system and have a greater chance of being placed in a safe and permanent home. Please keep Virginia Beach CASA in your thoughts and prayers during this Holiday Season. Your financial or in-kind support of our mission would be greatly appreciated. I assure you that the entire Virginia Beach CASA Board and operations team will utilize your contribution to best serve the needs of the abused and neglected children in the city of Virginia Beach. Virginia Beach Court Appointed Special Advocates 2011 – 2012

Annual Report

A Few Highlights from the 2011 – 2012

Recognition The Annual Volunteer recognition event was held at the Princess Anne Country Club in February. CASA volunteers, CASA Board members and Judges from the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court came together to honor and salute the tireless efforts of the CASA volunteers. The Edith Duggan Award was presented to Betty Wade Coyle, Executive Director of Prevent Child Abuse Hampton Roads and renowned advocate and crusader in the child welfare community.

Fun Times, Fun-Raising! The Annual Fundraiser, this year entitled “Ride the Wave,” held at the Cavalier Golf and Yacht Club was an event to remember. Over 300 people came out to support Virginia Beach CASA. Attendees enjoyed great food, fun, fabulous live and silent auction packages, raffle chances, and fun at the chipping activity. CASA exceeded expectations and netted over $54,000 from this event.

Staffing and Personnel After 5 years of dutiful service, in June 2012, Judy Kurtz retired as Executive Director. After an extensive search the program welcomed Season Roberts as the new Executive Director. Beth Simons, who served the program for 3 years as a Volunteer Coordinator, left the program in pursuit of other endeavors. Linda Michie and LaShonda Carson remained with the program as Volunteer Coordinators, both doing an excellent job in supporting the CASA volunteers in their advocacy efforts.
