SOUTHWE ST~~N VI R.G IN I A SOCIETY
Fall, 1991
Dear Friends,
GENEALOGICAL
As the sununer ends and our vacations are over, we begin · to think of more time spent in the Virginia Room and in talking with others who share our interests. I hope each of you had a great summer .
Our next meeting will be September 21, 1991, and I hope we will see a lot of you there. Unfortunately, we will be missing one of our most · supportive members--Belva Counts. Belva has moved to he r "mountain estate" in Southwest Virginia. We wil 1 miss her book r evi ew s in the VAN, her contributions to all our meetings, and her smiling face. Best wishes, Belva. The Society has purchased an addit i on to the Virginia Room in Belva ' s honor.
The Society will also be financing the purchase of some addi t i onal books for the Virginia Room. Since we are among the mo s t frequ ent users of these materials, we felt that the purchase of s ome of the more expensive materials would be appropriate . We wou ld also like to hear from some of our distant members. We re a li ze that you are unable to attend our monthly meetings, and we woul d like t o know if there is something we could do for you.
Ba be is always looking for articles of interest to you all for the VAN . The VAN is published four times each year. If you have something y ou would like to submit to her, please follow the di r e c tions i n this issue. If you have a particular interest which has not b een published, let her know.
I am looking forward to another great fall, and I hope to hear from many of you .

THE PIONEER DAUG HTER of BENJ AMI N a nd RUTH HOUGH
by Betty ~il son Thomas
13enjamin lfour,ll' s e reat grandson, Jonas Durman Wilson, (1808 - 1887) , left his family a Journal r ecord ing his own experiences as a frontier Baptist preacher; he incl uded a cenealogical record noting many family groups dating back to Benjami.n <1nd 11uth ll ough , including birth dates.· (The Journal is now in th e possession of his great grandson, Larry Wilson of Monrovia, CA) Benjamin Hou Gll/flufl \..ia s born :28 Dec 1718 ; he died 25 Jan 1791 in Virginia . His wife , Ruth , ~a s born 4 May 1 713 ; she died after 1800, probably in Grainger Co , Te nn essPC' .
The first documented ev i de nce of Benjamin Hough ' s presence in Va was fo und in the court house r ecords in Le esburg on a 1769 tithable l i st of Loud on county residents . Althoug h there is a we l l established (Quaker) Hough 1 inc i. n Loudon Co , no connect i on has been found to Benjamin Hough , nor to his wife Ruth. In 1771, Benj am in Hou g h's sons-in-law, Joshua Wilson and Cornelius Reed , were found o n the same Shelburne Parish, Loudon Co tithable list with Benjami n "lloff " and hi s sons , Joseph and John " Hoff". Discovering all 3 famili es in the same area 1..ias the first indica tion of their early whereabout s ; this was con sidered to b e an exciting breakthrough for Hough r esearchers . Furth e r e xamination of the actual Loudon Co courthous e records revealed that Jos hua Wilson was on the tithable lists from 1769 through 177 2 ; Benjamin was listed th e r e in 1769 and 1771 , and Cornelius Reed appeared in 1771 and ]772 .
Be njamin " !lu f f " is mentioned several times in Summer ' s "Annals of Southwest Virgini a ' ' : p 1 9 7 (in 1773) a s a surveyor of roads on Bent Mountain; on p 319-320 , at court held for Botetourt Co the 11 May 1780, it was ordered that Benjamin Huff ''with the tithables in the bounds of Captain Wi llson' s Company of militia open (a road) and keep the same in repair as the law directs ." On p 372, 8 May 1783, Benjamin Huff was " exempted from payment of Cou nty l e vies in f uture on account of his age and i nfirmity" . By 17 83, Benjamin Huff owned 200 acres near Bent Mountain, wh i ch is now in Floyd Co, south of present day Roanoke, Va . (See Charles Burton ' s " Botetourt County, Virginia, Early Settlers ' ': Benjamin Huff, 1782, tax on 200 acres) .
An earlier reference, in Cartmell ' s "Shenandoah Valley Pioneers and The ir Descendants" , p 500 : " The Huffs of that section (Frederick Co, Va, east of Newtown, n ear the Clarke line) , John and Joseph are sons of an enterprising father, who spent money in prospecting for silver in that section many years ago ''. This is widely believed to be a reference to Benjamin Huff . '' Keg l e y ' s Virginia Frontier " by F B Kegley (1938), p 561, name ' s early residents of Bent Mountain , Captain Martin ' s Company: included were Benjamin "Huff ' ' & John Huff son of Benjamin. In Stoner ' s "A Seed-bed of the Republic" , p 1.Li 3, Benjamin Huff is named among " Other people furnishing materials or service in war effort : Order Book 1780- 1784". In "West Virginia Revolutionary Ancestors ,'' whose services were non-military and whose names, theref ore, do not appear in Revolut i onary indexes of Soldiers and Sailors compiled by Anne Waller Redd y (1979) . An index from Manuscript Public Cla ims of the Revolutionary War in the Virginia State Library. p 40, " Huff, Benjamin Bote tour t County".
For many yea~s, genea logis ts have known about the Montg omery Co, Va court record settling the estate of John Hough in 1799; John bought some l and and died b efore it was surveyed (A 200 acre en try made 5 Mar 1 793 on land

(1) Catherine Hough Wilson (b 6 Sept 17118 ) a n d .Jo sh u a ( b lU Se> pt 17L10 ) had nine children born between 1765 and 17 83 . Th e c 1c! e>s r, Hcnjam in, h 1 as b 4 Aug 1765 . It is presumed they were marri ed ca l 7 611 ; but , no rec or ct h as been found in Virginia . Family stories indicat e that Jo s hu<t \" i l son ' s ancestors were Scottish ; they came to America by way of IJl s tcr , in northern Ireland . Many Scotch-Irish families settled in Loudon Co , Va in th e early 1700 ' s . Catherina and Joshua Wilson moved from the Loudon Co area pr i or to 17 83 ; their youngest chi ld, Elizabeth, was born 29 March 1783 . They set tled on Brush Creek , a branch of the Little River , west of Hoanoke . They r e mained there until the late 1790's ; a deed of sale was record ~d for t h e ir property in 1802 (Montgomery Co, Va, Dd Bk C , p 494).
Joshua Wilson was living in Lincoln Co , Ky in 1800, when h e ga v e hi s indenture to Thomas Lee for the land inherit ed from John llou g h. Catherine a nd Joshua Wilson had moved on throug h th e Cumberland Gap to the pres e nt Some rs et , Ky area. They were accompanied by their son, Jonah Wilson and h is wi fe , Elizabeth Dearman (my ancestors) and by other children a nd g rand chi l dren. They lived in the Linco ln, Rockcastle and Pul ask i County area for many years . Jonas Durman Wilson , my great grandfather, was born i n Rocke a st le Co , Ky in
1808 . (2) Sarah Hough, and her husband, Cornelius Reed/Read , remained in Loud
on Co longer than the other sisters ; perhaps, until after the death of her father -in-law , Jonathan Reed in 1791 (wills of Loudon Co , Va) . Numerous Read /Reed families resided in Montgomery Co, Va in the 1790 ' s , including Corneliu s Read Jt.:nior , Cornel ius Read Senior, was living in Montgomery Co , Va in 1800 when he gave his indenture to Thomas Lee for the land inherited fro m his father- in-law, John Hough . We do not have a complete list of the Read c hildren , or birth and death dates for Sarah Hough Read a nd Cornel ius Read .
(3) Elizabeth Hough married John Wil son. It is not known whether he was related to Joshua Wilson. There was only one John Wilson family record-ed on the Franklin Co Tax list in 1800 (at th e time a John Wilson and hi s wife Elizabeth Hough of Franklin Co , Va were n amed as h e ir s to her brother, John Hough) . We have a Franklin Co record o f a John and E l izabet h Wilson, with ten children , who left for Barren Co, Ky in 1808 . Their daughter, Sarah,

married Joseph \\ooten , 25 Dec 1805 , in Franklin Co, Va ; they had a son, Wil-1 iam "li uff '' \foote n . (Sarah died 12 Apr 1857 in Barren Co, Ky). We need proof that these we re the children of Elizabeth Hough Wilson , and the grandchi ldrcn of Be njamin and Ruth Hough .
(l1) Char ity llough married (21 June 1783) James Renfro, a Revolutionary ~ar so l cli cr from Bedford Co , Va; they owned land on the Little River, adjacc n t t o t Ile home of Ca th er ine and Joshua Wilson . Both families sold their l ane! in Montgomery Co, Va a bout the same time (1798 -1800) . The Renfros settl ed land in Tennessee , just south of the Cumberland Gap . Later they b ecame early sc Ltler s or Pi neville, Ky (Knox/Bell Co) . There has been considerable doc umentation of this family ; their gravestones were relocated to the Pinevi ll e Cemetery by th e ir Moss family descendants, after their graves and their o l cl h o mes t ead were coverert by floodwaters of the Cumberland River. The era v <?s t o n e of Charity Ann " Hu ff'' Renfro indicates that she was b 23 Dec 17 63 a nrl d 6 Nar 1831 . Charity had twelve children born 1784 to 1809.
( 5 ) Jerusha Hou gh was married to Thomas Lee (son of Stephen Lee) in Bed f o rd, Botetourt Co , Va , 15 Aug 1788 (her mother, Ruth Hough , signed the consent) ; they lived in Montgomery Co, Va from about 1790 to 1798, according to the annual Personal ?ropery data in the Virginia State Archives. By 1800 they liad moved to Gr a in ger Co. , Tn (later Claibourne Co . ) It is believed that Ruth llough accompani ed them, as she gave her indenture to Thomas Lee in in 1800 in Grainger Co, Tn for the share of land she inherited from her son, John !laugh . She was 76 years old then . It is not known when or where she died . Thomas Lee d ied 27 January 1839 in Tennessee . Jerusha was born in 1766 in Va and d i ed after 1850 in Tennessee . They had seven children.
Family group sheets for all 5 of the Hough sisters have been partially completed from family records, Virginia marriage records, etc . Exchange of group sh~ets , including additions or corrections , will be welcomed from others researching these same lines .
Th e 5 Ho u g h daughters represent the strength and courage o f our pioneer grandm others who shared the hardships of the wildernes~ frontier with their brave and resourceful husbands; they raised large fami lies who homesteaded along the \vild rivers and western trails, as soon as these areas were opened to settlers, Benjamin and Ruth Hough left numerous grandchi l dren (in Virginia, Tennessee, Ke ntucky, Indiana and Missouri) who are proud of their pioneer h e rita ge . PETERS OF SCOTT COUNTY , VI RG INIA
JACOB PETERS, SR . (1744 - 1814)
*Contributed by Ted A. Peters
Jacob Peters , Sr. was born in Germany in l 74 -l lie came to the United States about 1762 or 1763 and sctt l e<l j n ('?) Berkeley (Rockbridge County) , Virginia. li e later move<l to Washington or Russell County , Virginia. lie marrie<l ,\nnic (last name unknown , born about 1748) about 1 768 . .Jacob, Sr. was a farmer and had a large amount of land . There is no record of his moving to Scott County , so it is assumed that he is buried in Washington or Russell County , Virginia. Sc.ott County was formed from a portion of Russell County but I do not believe Jacob Sro ' s land was part of it o lie had five children - four sons and one daughter :
John (1770 - 1823) , Henry (1771 - UnknO\vn), .Jessee (1774 - Unknown) , Jacob Jr o (1779 - 1862) , and Annie (1781 - Unknown) .
The 1810 tax list and supplement to 1810 census for Russell County , Virginia (which at that time included the present Scott County (18 14) , Wise County (1856) , Dickerson County (1880) , Buchanan County (1858) and present Russell County) included one Jacob Peters . This is most likely our ancestor.
JACOB PETERS , JR . (1779 - 1862) (So n o f Jacob Peters , Sro)
It is not known when or why Jacob, Jr o came t o Scott County , Virginia. He married Catherine Hacker (1786 - 1859), daughter of Jonas and Elizabeth Hacker , about 1801 . He was a land owner and successful farmer o They lived and died in the Cooper Ridge area (now known as the Midw~y Community) of Scott County , Virginia . They had four children :
John (1804 ( 1808 -
), Henry (1806 -) , and Ira Do (1810 -
JOHN PETERS (1804 - ) (Son of Jacob Peters, Jr.)
) , Marion ) 0
John married Elizabeth Humbard ( 1811 - ) about 183la He was a General Storekeeper and farmer , They l ived and died near the Midway Community of Scott County , Virginia. They had e leven children - ten sons and one daughter :

1890 CENSUS - FLOYD COUNTY, VIBGINIA by Jimmie Mart in Steele. Since the Federal census for this year has been lost to researcher, this 1890 census of Floyd Co is very valuable. This record is not as complete as the record sent to Washington and has been copied exactly as it was recorded (names & ages) i n this small book that was found in the court house. The book has 142 pages a nd indexed for the following districts: (1) Alum Ridge, (2) Burks Fort , (3) Indian Vi llage , ( L1) Jacksonville , (5) Little River , (6) Locust Grove. The price of the book is $13 . 00 - (our omission) $1 . 50 postage , 59¢ tax = total $15 . 09 . Or der f rom Mrs Jimmie M Steele , 1830 Carter Road SW, Roanoke, Va 24015 .
