FAMOUS CRIME AUTHOR PAYS VISITBrian C. Flick , Associate Professor of Police Science and Program Head of Administration of Justice at Piedmont Virginia Community College, poses with Jack Levin, nationally renowned authority on hate crimes and serial killers. President’s Corner
Campus safety, security under microscope
Greetings VACJE Members: You may recall in the
Summer 2007 VACJE newsletter (President’s Corner “We Are All Hokies”) I had committed to the following:
(1) attend a virtual forum on “Advanced Violence Risk Assessment,
(2) participate in a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training class,
(3) lend support to campus security personnel and
(4) watch for “red fl ags” (campus danger signs) that could lead to a disaster.
Well, I’m three for four. Although I have not been able to locate a CERT training class, I’ll keep looking! The December “violence risk assessment” course presented by James Cawood was excellent and drove home the point that some folks out there in our society might just be thinking that they will have to kill you in order to control you.
If you will e-mail me, I’ll be glad to send you a 28-page document, furnished at the virtual seminar, which includes an Association of Threat Assessment Professionals (ATAP) “Model Violence Risk Assessment Process.”
By JOHN WILT
Linda Jones was featured March 20 on the popular A&E series “Crime 360.”
A&E producers will provide viewers with an inside view of Cleveland Police Department’s homicide unit.
One aspect of A&E's production is their use of a 360 degree Lyca Camera which logs various crime scenes.
Jones can be seen processing crime scene evidence. By the time this newsletter is published, Linda will have “come and gone"”from Paramount Studio to see fi rst-hand
the proverbial “fi lm cuttings on the production studio fl oor.”
The title of the A&E show featuring crime scene and homicide personnel from the Cleveland PD is “Crime 360.” If you go to A&E’s Web site to view “Crime 360,” you can watch lead homicide detective
Wally Everett and Detective Mike Smith work a crime scene where a body lies hidden between some hedges and the porch of the victim's grandmother’s house. The victim, a male, is face down.
Jones featured on show that’s all about crime

Welcome back!! I hope that everyone had a relaxing summer.
Even though, summer seems to fly by it is nice to have the students back on campus again. As you know, last year’s conference was a success. However, this year I would like to see more members attend as well as bring in prospective members. One way that I am hoping to increase participation is by moving the conference from a Friday and Saturday event to a Thursday and Friday event. We hope that this paired with the institutional discount that allows your college or university to send up to 5 people will increase our membership and conference attendance this year! As Nicolle and I requested last year, please forward the conference information to at least 3 people.
We are also pleased to announce that the annual VACJE conference will once again be held at the Richmond Police Training Academy. We are planning another great conference which will focus on the cross disciplinary approach of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness in the Criminal Justice arena. Our speakers will be from local colleges and universities as well as state and local agencies. We will also be hosting a poster session in the afternoon to allow your students to display some of their work in the area of criminal justice. Remember the student rate to attend is very affordable and the poster presentation is a great resume building for our students! I am looking forward to this conference and can’t wait to hear from our wonderful guest speakers and see the great work our students and faculty are doing. Lastly, I’d like to thank Richmond Police Department for allowing the VACJE to use their facilities free of charge.

EDWARD GREENBERGEdward W. Greenberg, who is a second year Criminal Justice Doctoral Teaching Fellow at the University of Massachusetts Lowell and the son of VACJE member Martin Greenberg, will be moderating a roundtable at the ACJS 51st Annual Meeting, February 18-22, 2014, to be held in Philadelphia entitled: Ghosts and Law Enforcement.
Ed’s roundtable description notes that “ All roles develop cultural connotations, and those of criminal justice professionals, such as police officers, are no exceptions. Shows like CSI and NCIS turn the process of law enforcement into myth without explicitly mentioning what they are doing. However, there is a category of law enforcement-related myth that has no bones with being honest about its derivative status--stories about ghosts inflicting justice upon the living, or struggling to find a way to repent for their crimes. We will relate some of the most common justice-related ghost stores in America, and explore the relation of these narratives to myths about law enforcement.”
Ed and his father will also be participating in a roundtable dealing with future planning for the newly approved ACJS Section on Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship (TLS). In August 2013, the ACJS Executive Board approved the establishment of the new TLS Section. Its purposes are to bring together Academy members to serve as a multifaceted resource to assist faculty, practitioners, staff, personnel, administrators, and students in their integration of effective innovative teaching and learning techniques as well as to promote the scholarship of teaching within the field of criminal justice education and training. All persons interested in these aims are encourage to attend this session in order to discuss how best to proceed. The discussion will be continued in a second roundtable at the conference and at other related events. For further information on either of these events, please feel free to contact Martin Greenberg at [email protected]

John Wilt attended the 2013 Virginia Master Teacher Seminar at Hampden-Sydney College. The July 7-11 master teacher seminar offered discussion on successful classroom strate-gies, teaching innovations and stressed the importance of beginning-semester “icebreakers”. Thirty-eight VCCS professors were in attendance at the 2013 Virginia Master Teacher Seminar. The Danville Community College Administration of Justice Program has received Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), Commission on Colleges (COC) approval of its Certificate in Cybercrime Investigation. The Certificate in Cybercrime Investigation consists of 38 credits to include introduction to computer crime, computer forensics and network secu-rity coursework. The Administration of Justice Program also offers three additional special-izations including: law enforcement, corrections and protective services (private security). Eleven of the 17 ADJ/SOC classes—including computer crime and computer forensics—are distance education classes. On September 28th, John Wilt participated in the First Annual Citizens-Times Marathon in Ashville, NC. John finished his 63rd marathon in 4:29 which placed him third in his age group.

I’ve not won a nobel prize or anything else of great significance. I’ve one recent presentation:
Levin, B. H. (2013). Trust, Scope of Change, the End of History and the Intelligence Enterprise. presented at “Understanding and Improving Intelligence Analysis,” a workshop at the Center for Intelligence and Security Studies, University of Mississippi, Oxford MS, 14-16 July 2013.
Last December I was awarded by the Waynesboro Police Department its “distinguished service medal” upon the occasion of my retirement from the Police Department. I turned in my badge and was then anointed “director of administration” for the auxiliary unit. Good folks to work with.
