ABOUT THIS SYLLABUSThe Victoria College of Music, London has held orchestral string examinations for many years and from 1962 has alsoadministered the College of Violinists which has held grade and diploma examinations since 1890. This syllabus draws uponthe past 120 years of tradition and innovation by resurrecting some pieces used in former years by both institutions and newmaterial from the forefront of contemporary music.

CHANGES TO SYLLABUSVCM examination requirements do not alter annually, the current syllabus is that listed on our website.Any changes to the syllabus are announced well in advance on the College website, on Facebook and Twitter.

COMPARISONS WITH OTHER EXAMINATION BODIESVCM Grades 1 to 8 are intended to compare on a level for level basis with the grades 1 to 8 of other similarly recognisedexamination boards.In addition to Grades 1 to 8, VCM examinations are available at several introductory levels prior to Grade1 as a means of encouraging beginners, or students with special needs. Medal and Diploma examinations are also availablein all subjects. Candidates at all levels receive a written report and, if successful, a certificate or diploma.

WHICH INSTRUMENT?It is the professional judgement of the teacher as to the size of instrument used and examiners will not comment upon aninappropriate size instrument unless they consider it to be detrimental to the candidates playing.

WHAT THE EXAMINERS ARE LOOKING FORExaminers are looking for a combination of skill, knowledge and understanding. Questions are asked in a manner whichassesses the candidate’s depth of understanding, not merely the ability to repeat definitions. Ingenuity, variety, musicianship,and a sense of style are rewarded, as well as technical skill and musical accuracy.OWN COMPOSITIONS Candidates for Grades 1 to 8 may perform their own compositions in lieu of Musicianship Tests.Further guidance is set out in Crazy Composing available from www.vcmpublications.co.uk

REGULATIONSAll entries are accepted on the conditions laid down in General Regulations and Information, a copy of which is available freeof charge. It is also on our website: www.vcmexams.com

ENTRY FORMSAll grades and medal examinations can be entered on white entry forms with no more than ten candidates on a page.Please use the code “VL” in the column headed “subject” and the letter(s) or numbers in the “grade no.” column.

QUESTIONSQuestions are based principally on the music performed; but in addition examiners are at liberty to ask questions on notes,rests, musical terms and signs, key and time-signatures, according to the Grade. Also specifically on minor keys; perfect,major, and minor intervals (Grade 3 upwards).

SIGHT READINGSight Reading tests are included from Preparatory level upwards. The relative standard will be that of approximately twogrades below the grade being taken. Examiners may discuss the Sight Reading Test with candidates as part of theQuestions. Specimen Sight Reading Tests are available to purchase from vcmpublications.co.uk

SET PIECESCandidates are required to prepare the specified number of pieces in all examinations. In all examinations each piece beingperformed should be written by a different composer. Examiners may stop the candidate at any point or request repeats etc.to be omitted.

ACCOMPANISTSCandidates are required to provide their own competent accompanist in all pieces published with accompaniment. Theaccompanist will remain in the room only while accompanying. Where no accompaniment is provided examiners will commentupon gaps in musical texture as appropriate. If a piece is published with CD, etc., this maybe used but it is the responsibilityof the candidate to provide the required equipment and be able to operate it in the exam without delay.

At Grades A-D accompaniment is encouraged but optional.

Where early and pre-20th century works are prescribed the edition listed is a known available copy but other editions of thesame work maybe substituted if agreed in advance with the College. Second hand and out of print music can be purchasedon www.amazon.co.uk or www.ebay.co.uk. Certain out of copyright pieces maybe obtained for free from www.imlsp.org

Demonstrations of many set works maybe found on www.youtube.com but please be aware that the quality of performanceis variable.

MEDAL EXAMINATIONSSuccessful candidates at medal examinations receive a certificate and a medal order form. Prices of medals are shown onthe medal order form. Medals are supplied in boxes and are engraved with the candidate’s name, subject of examinationand the year. Medal awards do not entitle holders to put letters after their names.

MEDLEYS & OWN CHOICESWhere examination requirements include medleys or own choices, a second copy of the score must be provided for theexaminer. At all levels, the examiners may penalise an option clearly chosen for its comparative ease.

ESSAYS, FOLIOS, ETC.Where dissertations are required, these must be submitted with the entry form.Separate or late submission is not permitted. Dissertations should be on plain white A4 paper, legibly written, typed or wordprocessed. Do not bind the pages as they need to be scanned though a sheet feeder. All dissertations should contain abibliography and contents page. For more guidance see Essay Writing for the Victoria College Teaching Diplomas publishedby LMP.

PHOTOCOPIESAll VCM and LMP publications are copyright. Photocopying of LMP publications is not permissible and candidates usingunauthorised photocopies at examinations will be disqualified. It is acceptable, however, to use a photocopy for thesecond copy when the syllabus requires one to be handed to the examiner, provided the original is also brought to theexamination. It is also acceptable to use photocopies of parts of long pieces to avoid awkward page turns, again providedthe original is also brought to the examination.

EXEMPTION FROM QUESTIONS AT PRACTICAL EXAMINATIONSCandidates who have passed certain VCM Theoretical Examinations are entitled to claim full marks for questions at PracticalExaminations as follows:

VCM Grade 1 Theory exempts up to and including Preliminary PracticalVCM Grade 1A Theory exempts up to and including Grade 1 PracticalVCM Grade 2 Theory exempts up to and including Grade 3 and JBM PracticalVCM Grade 3 Theory exempts up to and including Grade 5 and JSM PracticalVCM Grade 4 Theory exempts up to and including Grade 7 and SM Practical

In all such cases the theory result or certificate must be produced for the Examiner at the beginning of the practicalexamination. Examiners do not take it amiss if reminded not to ask questions if they have been shown a qualifying Theorypass.

MEMORYPerforming from memory is not compulsory at any level. However, it is encouraged and will be rewarded.

EXAMINERSOn occasions, two examiners may be present for purposes of Moderation or Training.

Entry for the Gold Medal is restricted to those who have already passed the Silver Medal in Violin Playing.

Candidates must present a balanced programme of their own choice of five solos. The programme must show a range ofstyles. The standard of difficulty should be suitable for this level of examination.

IntroductionsThe standard expected is that of an amateur performance at a live local charity show. Candidates should be able tointroduce their programmes as to a live audience. Examiners will expect to be treated as an audience and addressedaccordingly.

DeportmentExaminers will take into account general presentation of the pieces and deportment. Examiners will expect candidates todress as if they are performing in a formal recital. A confident professional approach is looked for. Credit will be given for effortin presentation, but not for the quality or sophistication of the resources available to the candidate.

Associate Diploma(A.V.C.M.(T.D.)) Syllabus III inTeaching of Violin Playing

This is an initial Teaching Diploma for those with someexperience of teaching at the lower grades and who intendto study further for teaching qualifications.

Candidates must submit with their entries ONE of thefollowing:

1. A folio (see p. 4) showing work and notes for a 10-week term for one of these categories:

the young beginner;the teenage beginner;

the adult beginner

The folio should include lists of appropriate pieces, studies,books, websites, etc. appended as a bibliography. Theexaminer will discuss the folio with the candidate at theexamination. A mark is not awarded for the folio which iseither “approved” or “not approved”.

2. A 25 minute DVD of them teaching a pupil of Grade 1to 5 standard. The lesson should show work on atleast one piece (approx.15 minutes) and two otherareas of the teacher’s choice. A numerical mark isnot awarded but feedback and an “approved” or “notapproved” assessment will be given.

2. A 30 minute DVD of them teaching a pupil of at leastGrade 6 standard. The lesson should show work on at leastone piece (approx.20 minutes) and two other areas of theteacher’s choice. A numerical mark is not awarded butfeedback and an “approved” or “not approved” assessmentwill be given.

Candidates for Fellowship must be Licentiates of the VCM in violin unless it has been agreed inadvance in writing that this requirement can be waived by virtue of equivalent qualifications.

Candidates for the Fellowship Diploma arerequired to prepare a concert recital for theexamination and should dress accordingly.

Candidates must submit their own programme ofFIVE solo works for approval by the College at leastone month before the proposed examination date.One solo should be a substantial work e.g. a violinsonata, concerto or a large scale suite.Programmes should provide a balance of style andforms.

Solo recital (80 marks)

Discussion of the work performed (10 marks)This will refer both to the pieces performed and tothe general repertoire of the violin.

Presentation and balance of programme(10 marks)

Candidates must have passed VCM Grade VIITheory of Music or hold an agreed exemptionprior to award of this diploma.

Candidates must submit with their entries ONE ofthe following:

Candidates should introduce the pieces as if forthe first time to a university undergraduate classand highlight passages of technical difficulty andareas which may require specific technical work.Copies of the pieces should be provided for theexaminer.
