The Jenkins family invites you to peruse, via this catalogue, the offering of bulls for their 3rd Violet Hills Charolais Southern Sale

at Yea. A warm welcome is extended to all attendees.

A selection of 30 bulls have been catalogued representing a good cross section of our 2015 drop of bulls. While all of the bulls are polled some are scurred.

The cattle market continues to be rewarding for the breeder. Excellent prices are being paid for quality young slaughter and feeder cattle. There are good premiums for certified, grass produced, young cattle, with high yielding carcases. This is especially so for quality Charolais heifer calves.

The crucial factor to consider when purchasing your Charolais bull is to select an easy care bull, whose progeny will be able to be finished at a young age. It is of great concern to us to hear of some agents and cattle producers claiming that Charolais are difficult to finish. As with all breeds it is essential that the bulls used are appropriate for the job. In other words, don’t blame the breed if you have selected an inappropriate bull. At Violet Hills we place a lot of emphasis on the bulls having the correct maturity pattern so that the progeny can be finished at a young age as well as having good early growth and excellent carcases.

We are presenting a very uniform line up of 18 month Australian polled Charolais bulls. A number of sires are represented which will hopefully give you a good selection to choose a bull from.

Breeding Guarantee: All Bulls are guaranteed breeders. Any claim against the breeding ability of a purchased animal should be made in writing, within 6 months, and accompanied by a veterinary certificate stating that the bull is infertile or incapable of natural service, and that, in his/her opinion, the bull has not suffered any injury or maltreatment, which could have affected its breeding ability, since delivery to the purchaser. Any animal failing to breed may be replaced with a similar animal or have the purchase price refunded minus the salvage value of the animal. This guarantee does not include interest, expenses, costs or damages this process may involve. All costs incurred for this process, will be at the purchasers expense. This guarantee does not include problems caused by accident, disease or management after the fall of the hammer.

Foot Guarantee: Having a good hoof structure is important for the working life of the bull. We are very conscious of this and cull any animal that has foot abnormalities. We do not trim feet or offer bulls for sale that we feel may have a foot problem. Many things, such as injury, disease, nutrition to name a few, can cause hoof abnormalities during the life of the bull.

Our “foot guarantee” is for the first 12 months after the purchase of the bull. We will credit the purchase price, minus the salvage value of the bull, on receipt of a veterinary certificate that certifies that the bull is incapable of natural service and this is not the result of injury, disease or mismanagement. This guarantee only applies to the actual state of the hooves in the first 12 months after purchase. All costs associated with any claim against the bull are to be borne by the purchaser.

Insurance: As the ownership of the bulls will pass to the successful purchaser on the fall of the hammer we recommend the purchaser insure their purchases. The agents will have a representative, who will arrange the appropriate insurance.

Inspection: The bulls will be available for inspection, at Yea saleyards, from 10am on sale day. Sean and Daryl will be in attendance to answer any questions. Feel free to contact us any time prior to the sale.

Refreshments: The canteen will be open to provide refreshments and lunch.

Agents Rebate: An outside Agents rebate of 3% will apply for Agents introducing their clients, IN WRITING, 24 hours prior to the sale and settling on their behalf within 7 days of the sale. These conditions will be strictly adhered to.

Delivery: Delivery instructions, in writing, must be given to the agents for stock awaiting delivery. Local carriers will be in attendance.

Caring for your new bull: When taking your new bull home, it is a good idea to have a welcoming group of cows or steers to help him settle into his new environment. His preparation will enable him to go to work as soon as needed. As he is still growing he should be kept on good quality feed, before, during and after being with your cows.

We strongly advise against running your new bull with older bulls during joining. Your young bull will run the risk of being injured. He will also get very few calves as he will be dominated by the older bulls.

History of Violet Hills Charolais

Violet Hills Charolais is a family owned operation conducted at Violet Hills and associated properties by Daryl, Kaye, Sean and Kirsty Jenkins. The farms are between Rydal and Hampton in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales on top of the Great Dividing Range. Up to 350 pedigree Charolais breeders and 100 Charolais/Red Angus composite cows are run.

Violet Hills Charolais was started in 1972 with an upgrading programme using imported French semen. As with many upgrading programmes in those days, we experienced a lot of problems from using inappropriate bulls that the semen salesmen were promoting. This is still a problem when using semen.

In 1984 our first home grown purebred bull was born. He restored our faith in Charolais as he was an easy calving, very good doing, easy care, early maturing meat bull, who could be used safely and successfully over British breeds of cattle run under Australian conditions.

Since then we have used semen from many imported sires, with mixed results, slowly building a pool of homebred sires suitable to our breeding programme. This is an ongoing process with feedback from our clients now playing an important role in our selection decisions.

Our aim continues to produce genuine early maturing, easy doing Charolais that have good calving ease, rapid early growth, a moderate mature size and a very good conformation. The ability to perform on grass is essential.

Being commercially orientated we find show ring results, glossy semen brochures and testimonials from semen salesmen have very little, if any, influence on our bull selection.

Sale Details

Venue and Time: The sale will be conducted at the Yea saleyards where the bulls will be penned and offered for sale in the pens. The starting time will be 1pm, Wednesday 22nd February 2017 and the bulls will be available for inspection from 10am on sale day.

Buyer Registration: All prospective buyers please register before the auction as a card system will be used. The bulls will be sold in the pens in which they are presented.

Scanning and Weighing: All bulls have been scanned and weighed on the 6th of February so that their EBV’s can be updated at the end of February. These measurements will be available sale day.

Health: All of the bulls are from a Johnes protected area and have been vaccinated with 7:1 (twice) and Pestigard (twice). They have also been vaccinated with Pilliguard. All have been drenched for fluke and worms.

Charolais BREEDPLAN EBVs

EBV’s stands for Estimated Breeding Values, and are aimed at putting a value on certain traits. These values can be compared with the breed average value for that trait for those recorded animals that have been born in the same year. An accuracy figure gives the percentage chance that these allocated values will be achieved. For young animals with limited recordings there can be very big changes in their EBV’s as more measurements are recorded as they get older.

In our opinion, EBV’s can give an indication of how an animal has performed, compared to other animals, run under similar conditions on the same farm.

Caution should be used when comparing animals from different herds unless the accuracy of the figure is above 80%.

Flambeau is by Pinay out of a very good old Rex cow. He was the outstanding bull in our F drop of bulls. He has tremendous length and muscling as well as perfect structure including legs and feet. He is a very easy calving bull with and early maturity pattern making him ideal for the grass fed production systems

Hilston is a well balanced, smooth muscled, easy doing bull. He has excellent calving EBV s (top 1%) and an above average EMA and fat EBV s. His Domestic Index is in the top 1% for the breed.(2012 drop). He has the ideal maturity pattern for grass fed beef production.

Gaelic Warrior is a homozygous polled bull with tremendous thickness with above breed average figures for calving ease, 400 day weight, carcase weight, EMA, fattening ability and retail yield. He has a scrotal circumference in the top 2% and a Domestic Index in the top 10% for the breed (2011 drop). A superb bull for the grass fed beef production.

Lloyd (P) is the only bull by Hilston in the sale. His half brother was the top priced bull at Yea last year. Lloyd has a Domestic Index that puts him in the top 1% of the breed (2015 drop). He is a very low birth weight (top 1%) bull with the correct growth pattern and carcase characteristics (top 20%). He would be suitable for heifer joining (top 1%) and replacement females, as well as producing very good carcase cattle. He is the second youngest bull in the draft and an excellent bull to start the sale.

Laibrook (P) is a lovely shaped vealer bull with below average birth weight and excellent early growth. His sire, Gaelic Warrior, has been one of our main sires for the last few years and his progeny are always eye catchers.

Pakenham Sale 9 January 2017Congratulations to Sebastian Iannello from Garfield, who sold 7 to 8 month old calves with the tops weighing 435kg and selling for 353.5 c/kg to come back at $1538.16. Overall the 17 mix sex calves averaged 399.8kg and came back at an average of $1396.54. The calves were out of Angus X Fresian and Murray Grey X Fresian cows by a Violet Hills bull.

These are the results that a combination of good management, good cows and a

good Charolais bull can achieve.
