Introduction

Domestic violence is considered a very normal thing according to the culture of Egypt’s slums. Girls as children were taught to obey men and accept them as they are essential for their protection, women must bear violence and their families have no problem with that, unless a woman is beaten till miscarriage or death.

Research Problem

Women in Egypt are exposed daily to violence whether physical, emotional or sexual.

1- Why are women generally exposed to violence? 2- What's the effect of violence on women's mental and psychological state ?3- What's the role of the civil society associations, NGOs and awareness movements in overcoming such a phenomenon ?

Research Objectives

1- Determining the main reasons behind violence against women.2- Discovering the effect of violence on women's mental and psychological state.

Research Hypotheses1- Wrong interpretations of religious texts play an important role in spreading of violence against women.2- Violence is related to the level of illiteracy and ignorance in societies.

Data Collection Methodology

- Primary Data: Conducting a questionnaire.- Secondary Data: Literature review.- Sample Size: 10 Persons- Target Audience Selected: Educated

Youth ranging from 20 years old and above, mostly students of the faculty of mass communication, Cairo University, belonging to the middle socioeconomic class

Exploratory Research

1- The Question : Do you think women in Egypt are exposed to severe physical punishment? 30% of people strongly agreed that women in Egypt are being exposed to severe physical punishment, whereas 50% just agreed and the rest 20% were neutral.

2- The Question: Do you accept women’s body being hit by their husbands or fathers?10% chose strongly agree, another 10% chose the reject option whereas the rest 80% selected the strongly disagree option.

Conclusion

Violence in general and that against women in particular have become really a global phenomenon that knows no local borders. All the hypothesis have come compatible with the exploratory research done according to the sample response.

Recommendations

1- Paying strict attention to the on field research and the analysis of the target segment feedback and responses.

2- Coordinating with governmental entities including the national council for women, the state ministry for population, the united nations regional office for women in addition to other executive and academic institutions to be able to get more fund and logistic assistance.
