Listeners,
When I started painting my Vinyl Art portraits, a fantasy of mine was to create enough good pieces for a coffee-table book. This eBook is perhaps an even better realization of that dream.
It’s interactive. So not only do I get to share my favorites, but I also get to show you why their music means so much to me. Each portrait has links to a YouTube video or group of videos and
to the album I love most available to listen to and buy on Amazon. What a world. So now if this ever does get printed, it’ll have to come with a CD or something to share the links!
I hope you enjoy this very personal collection of cultural creativity. Waking up with a song in my head, and falling back asleep with it, music has been very important to who I am, to who I have been. The sequence of the tracks follows roughly the order in time which the music has influenced my life. It’s my musical biography, if you will.
Don’t skip the inner groove!

My love for music started because of my dad’s love for music. And for The Beatles.
“Revolver” started it all, a Capitol pressing that my dad opened with care, leaving the original shrink wrap intact.
What else is there to say?

The Talking Heads’ “Burning Down The House” is fresh every time I hear it, which has been many.
Haunting eyes belie a haunting spirit in David Byrne.
Quirky and a bit weird, the beats still reach deep.

Hitting the “Big Time” right when I got into music, Peter Gabriel’s solo career and work with Genesis aches with passion.
Innovative, yet true to the emotional soul of the rhythm, the power of his creation gives me chills. Chills.

Crazy dark.
Brilliant spark.
Pink Floyd’s early work was, is and will always be fresh, revolutionary. Nothing ever quite like it, in my opinion.
Thanks to Syd.

I think she once said she kind of just shouted.
Well whatever you call Grace Slick’s singing, she made Jefferson Airplane’s harmony work. That’s my opinion.
Moments of their music get me every time.

Writhing like the king snake, Mr. Mojo Risin’ captivates in every sense of the word, with every human sense.
How do you achieve legendary status?
Ask him, but maybe don’t follow his lead.

The wail of his guitar flying above the brilliant percussion and searing organ, Santana seems a modern day big band leader of sorts.
The cacophony of sound somehow resolves into uncontrollable dance.

Perhaps the most simultaneously guarded and unguarded of musicians, Lennon defines beautiful.
Popishly exquisite and soulfully bare, the human creativity he put forth astounds.

Yes, I picture Wayne, Garth and friends head-banging to “Bohemian Rhapsody”, and I do think about Highlander, the series, listening to “Who Wants To Live Forever”.
So basically, Queen rocks.
Plain and simple.

Trumpet aimed at the ground, back hunched, Miles was the epitome of conciseness with his controlled explosions of expression.
“Birth of the Cool” indeed.
His version of Rodrigo’s “Concierto de Aranjuez” caught me. And never let go.

Like Morrison, Cobain’s music became more powerful in his dramatic absense.
With a flash, his piercing eyes and tortured voice laid bare his soul.
And then he was gone.
