ytheearly1920s,summervisitorsbegantoflocktotheshoresofPelicanLake.Asroadsimproved,touristscouldcomebycaraswellastrain.Manyofthesepeoplecametoenjoythegreatfishingonthelakeandseveralstayedandbuiltcabinsandcottagesonitsshores.
Someoftheseoldcabins,cottagesandsummerhomesthatdatetotheearly1900sarestilloccupied.Ithoughtourreadersmightliketoknowabitofhistoryaboutsomeofthem.Ifyouknowofacabinorcottagedatingfrom1900tothe1930scontactmeatjames7122@gmail.comandperhapsitcanbefeaturedinthiscolumn.HenryB.Babson(1875–1970)grewupnearSeward,Nebraskaandattheageof17movedtoChicago.Hewasanentrepreneurandinvestorinthefledglingsoundtechnologybusiness.TogetherwithhisbrothersFredandGus,hewasaprincipleintheBabsonBrothersCompany,amercantileandcatalogmailorderfirmestablishedin1906thatwassimilartoSears,Roebuck.ThoughBabsonhimselfwasnotaninventor,hebecamewealthybysellinginnovativeproducts,particularlytheVictorPhonograph,andlatertheSurgemilkingmachine.However,hisinterestinthenew,innovative,andbeautifulwasparticularlyreflectedinhispersonallife.In1907hehiredthefamousarchitect,LouisSullivantodesignhis28-acrecountryestateinRiverside,Illinois,andamongotherthingsenjoyedracingcustomsailboatsonLakeMichigan.BabsonalsoownedtheOldMaid,a33ft.scowthathesailedonPelicaninthe1920sand30s.BabsonmayhavebecomeacquaintedwithPelicanLakethroughhisassociationwithDavidJones,aSewardbankeroranotherNebraskanative,ClarkStevenswhoalsoownedlandalongthesouthshoreofPelican.LandrecordsindicateBabsonpurchasedGovernmentLot2(46acres)inSection3inLakeEdwardTownshiponSeptember13,1921fromCharlesJ.Fredrickson,aSt.LouisCountybuildingcontractor.In1926headdedtohisholdingswiththepurchaseoftheEast½ofGovernmentLot3fromPhilipFrickeandFranklinMurray.InJuly1932hesold300feetofthatpropertytoRobertandMercedesCattle.RobertCattlewasalsoabankerfromSeward,Nebraska.
Thehousewasunderconstructioninearly1922andmayhavebeenbuiltbyCharlesFredrickson,theDuluthbuildingcontractor,fromwhomBabsonpurchasedtheland.TheundatedoriginalblueprintsdrawnbyWilliamDrummond,awell-knownChicagoarchitect,whohadworkedasadraftsmanfordesignerLouisSullivanandlaterFrankLloydWrightbeforeestablishinghisownpractice,stillremainsonthewallofthewestporchinthelakehouse.

WhileDrummondisbestknownforhisPrairieSchooldesigns,theBabsonHouseisasignificantdeparturefromthatstyle,resemblingaNorthWoodslodge.Thehalflog-sidedhousehasagentlyslopinggablecoveringthelivingroomthatcreatesatwo-storyvaultedceiling.Onthefirstfloor,thetoweringfieldstonefireplaceonthesouthwall,constructedfromlakerocks,soarsnearly50feettotheceiling.Anenclosedwrap-aroundporchextendsacrossthenorthandwestsideofthelivingroom.Thewoodplankfloorswereoncecoveredwithfineorientalrugs.Alargemasterbedroomislocatedonthesouthwestcornerfromwhatwasoriginallyamusicroom.Itsoverheadflatroofcreatesawalkoutareaaccessiblefromasecondstory
bedroom.ThebedroomconversionwasdonetoaccommodateRobertDonaldson'swife,Margaret,whohadarthritisthatmadestairclimbingdifficult.Thesevenupstairsbedroomsarereachedviaasecondfloorbalconythatrunsaroundtheperimeterofthelivingroom.Originallytherewereeightbedrooms,butunderDonaldson'sownershiponebedroomwasconvertedintotwobathrooms.Thefour-lakesidebedroomsgivewaytoanoutsideupperlevelbalconythatextendsacrosstheentirenorthfaceofthebuilding.
Thehouseoriginallyhadnoindoorplumbing,electricity,orrunningwater.Inadditiontothehouse,thepropertyalsohadaboathousewithaconnectingwalkway,anicehouse,anouthouseandlaterashelter(sincedemolished)fortheOldMaid,Babson'ssailingscow.Severaldetailsshownontheoriginalblueprintswerenotbuiltincludingthefirstandsecondlevelbaywindows.Thecompletedarrangementofthenorthsideporchhingedwindowswasalteredfromthoseshownontheblueprint.Fauxstonecoveringthelowerportionofthenorthsideandtheboathouseappearaslateradditions.AfewcontentsfromtheBabsonHouseremain.Theseincludea1890seraEsteyStyleNo.7cabinetgrandpiano,threewood
dressers,astuffedwhitePelicansuspendedinflightunderthelivingroomceiling,halfofanorthernpikemountedonadecorativeboard,anda24-placesettingofSwinnertonsSilverdaleStaffordshireEnglishdinnerwarec.1946.
BythistimesomanySewardresidentshadsummerhomesonthesouthshoreofPelicanLakeitunofficiallybecameknownasSewardCamp.HenryBabsonwasagreatfriendofCaptainBillyFawcettownerofBreezyPointResortacrossthelakefromBabson'shome.Fawcetthadanair-poweredseasledhecalledtheWhizBang,namedafterhiswildlysuccessfulmagazineofthesamename.AnarticleintheAugust4,1923BrainerdDispatchtellsofFawcett's35mphcruisewithCharlesDickinson,presidentoftheIllinoisAeroclubandprominentChicagobusinessmandowntothesouthbayofPelicantovisitBabson.
Overtheyearsthelakehousechangedhandsseveraltimes.TheBabson'sretainedtheirlakehomeuntilJune14,1950whentheysoldittotheirnext-doorneighborRobertCattle.TheCattlefamilyneveroccupiedthehouseandonApril10,1951theysoldthehouseandtheEast½ofGovernmentLot2toRobertH.Donaldsonfor$12,500.DonaldsonwasthenchairmanoftheMinneapolis-basedDonaldsonCorporation,makersofairfiltrationequipment.Sincethen,ownershiphaspassedthroughhisdaughterMeredithMair,granddaughterJeanFreytagandpresentownergreatgrandsonsJimandBobFreytag.TheBabson-Freytaghousemaybetheonlyremainingsummer
