Selecting a MouthpieceWhen selecting a mouthpiece, a brassinstrumentalist should choose one with asolid, compact tone of large volume. Acarefully selected Bach mouthpiece canhelp improve a player’s embouchure, attack, tonguing and endurance.

Professional musicians and advancedstudents prefer the musical results oflarge mouthpieces, such as the Bach 1B,1C, 11⁄4C, 11⁄2B, 11⁄2C, 21⁄2C, 3C, whichprovide a maximum volume of tone withthe least amount of effort. By openingup the lips so that they do not touch, thelarger mouthpiece produces a clearer, purer tone. The large cup diameter alsoallows a greater portion of the lip tovibrate, producing a larger volume oftone, and keeps a player from forcinghigh tones by encouraging the correctfunctioning of the lip muscles. However,a student may find a medium-sizedmouthpiece suitable.

Do not select a certain mouthpiecebecause another player uses it. Becauseno two players have the same lip ortooth formation, what is perfect for onemay be entirely unsuitable for the other.Bach produces many different models sothat each player can find the best mouth-piece for their individual embouchure.

THROAT BACKBORE

SHANK

A mouthpiece consists of the rim, cup, throat, and backbore. Bringing these various components into proper relationship constitutes the art of superior mouthpiece production.

In choosing a special combination of rim, cup, throat and backbore designs, consider the effects of each.

RIM

Wide: Increases endurance.Narrow: Improves flexibility, range.Round: Improves comfort.Sharp: Increases brilliance, precision of attack.

CUP

Large: Increases volume, control.Small: Relieves fatigue, weakness.Deep: Darkens tone, especially in low register.Shallow: Brightens tone, improves

response, especially in high register.

THROAT

Large: Increases blowing freedom, volume, tone; sharpens high register (largest sizes also sharpen low register).

Small: Increases resistance, endurance, brilliance; flattens high register.

BACKBORE

BACKBORE

Except in general terms, it isn’t possible to identifybackbores by size because they also vary in shape.Various combinations of size and shape make thetone darker or more brilliant, raise or lower thepitch in one or more registers, increase ordecrease volume. In each instance, the effectdepends in part on the throat and cup used incombination with the backbore.

The playing qualities mentioned on this pageare discussed in greater detail in the followingsections. Keep in mind that playing qualitiesof mouthpieces vary from person to person;therefore, descriptions of playing qualities arenecessarily subjective. It is important to viewall information in this manual as a generalguide. For best results, use it as a starting pointfor testing a number of models, not as a substitution for testing.

What Every Brass Instrumentalist Should Know About Mouthpieces

Page 6: Vincent Bach Mouthpiece Manual - Brass & Woodwind · PDF file13.-18. Trumpet, Cornet & Fluegelhorn Mouthpieces 18. E Contra-Alto Trumpet Mouthpiece 19. Mega Tone ® Trumpet Mouthpieces

Wide Rim: Increases player’sendurance, but limits flexibility.

Narrow Rim: Helps players who must cover a wide range of pitch.

Rounded Rim: Crooked teeth may require a rounded rim contour at the expense of clean low-register attacks.

Sharp Inner Rim Edge: Produces a brilliant metallic tone, makes attacks more reliable.

The RimA well-constructed brass instrumentmouthpiece should have a medium-widerim with a fairly sharp inner edge. If the mouthpiece is properly placed, it willpermit the lips to move slightly forwardand backward. For high tones, a playerwill draw the lips farther back; while for low tones, the lip muscles will relax, permitting the lips to protrude.

A sharp rim will not cut the lip if theflat face of the mouthpiece rim is placedon the lips in (or slightly above) a hori-zontal position, with the mouthpiece at a 90 degree angle against the front teeth.A sharp inner edge against the lip willautomatically remind the player that theinstrument is not being held correctly.

The use of a mouthpiece without asharp inner edge is not recommended, as it would not allow sufficient surface to distribute pressure over the lips. A too-rounded rim will dig into the lips, limiting the player’s endurance.

A player with a normal embouchureand fairly muscular lips should prefer amedium-wide rim, which will allow both flexibility and endurance. A too-wide rim will clamp down lip musclesand embouchure flexibility, and the effect will be noticeable on quick tonal changes.

Players with very thick lips, however, can use a wide rim to advantage, as amedium-wide rim might dig into the softtissues of the lips and interfere with theblood circulation. Players who cannotovercome the habit of “forcing” hightones, or band members who occasionallysmack the mouthpiece against the lipswhile marching may also consider itadvantageous to use wide-rimmedmouthpieces. However, even very thick-lipped musicians and marching bandmusicians should prefer medium-widerims if they do not feel hindered in usingthem, for mouthpieces with extra-widerims encourage a player to use too muchpressure for the high notes instead ofrelying on the lip muscles to do the work.

A narrow rim offers a trumpet ortrombone player greater flexibility, but it tends to dig into the flesh of the lips, cutting off free blood circulation anddecreasing endurance. Horn players oftenprefer a medium-narrow rim becausetheir instrument covers so wide a range(a fourth lower than a trombone andalmost as high as a trumpet). The medi-um-narrow rim enables the horn playerto move the lips much more easily; thelips will be able to protrude for the lowtones and retract for the high tones.

Large Cup Diameter: Produces a large volume and reduces risk of cracked tones.

Small Cup Diameter: Requires little strength.Limits the tone andinhibits embouchure development._

Deep Cup: Improves the tone, especially in the lower register.

Shallow Cup: Designed for brasses in high keys. Aids in high register production.

The Cup: DepthIn general, a large cup diameter and/ordepth lowers the pitch of an instrument, while a small cup diameter and/or shal-low cup raises the pitch. Therefore, it isimportant to match the cup of the mouth-piece with the pitch of the instrument.Due to variations in embouchure, airsupport and oral cavity among musicians, individuals should select a cup whichimproves their overall intonation.

The correct depth of the cup dependsupon the pitch and corresponding lengthof the instrument, and, to a certain extent, the bore. For example, achieving the brilliance of a B piccolo trumpet requiresa shallow cup, while the dark lyrical tonequality of a fluegelhorn demands the useof a deep cup. For this reason, we do notrecommend using refitted trumpet orcornet mouthpieces with the fluegelhorn.

A player using a medium-large bore Bor C trumpet or a B cornet should gen-erally use a mouthpiece no shallower thanthe Bach C cup and preferably, slightlydeeper cups such as a B or A. One excep-tion is for musicians who continuallyplay in the extreme high register anddesire a brighter sound. In this case, amore shallow mouthpiece such as a 3D,3E, 3F or 5SV may be preferable.

For the Horn, a comparatively largevolume of air must be used to fill thebell. A very deep cup will help to get afull low register (suitable for second andfourth horn) while a shallower cup willhelp produce high tones (advantageousfor first and third horn players). For thesmall tenor trombone, a medium-deepmouthpiece cup such as the 7C, 11C or 12C is preferred. For the symphonictenor trombone, a larger cup, such as61⁄2AM, 61⁄2AL, 5G, 5GB, or 5GS maybe preferable. For baritone or euphonium,it is generally best to use a medium-deepcup, preferably one with a symphonicbackbore to produce a more mellow tone.

The Cup: DiameterWe recommend that all brass instrumentalists — professional artists, beginners or advanced students; symphony, concert or jazz band — use as large a cupdiameter as they can endure and a fairlydeep cup. A larger mouthpiece with afairly deep cup offers the advantages of a natural, compact, and uniform high, middle and low register, improved lipcontrol, greater flexibility, and avoidanceof missed tones. A larger-sized mouthpiecewill also offer greater comfort, making it possible to secure a good tone qualityeven when the lips are swollen from toomuch playing.

Splitting tones may be an indicationthat the mouthpiece is too small or perhapstoo shallow. A small cup diameter doesnot permit the lips to vibrate sufficiently, preventing the player from producing arich, full tone. The lack of tone volumetempts a player to exert more lip pressureand to force more air through the instru-ment than the small mouthpiece is capableof handling, creating a shrill tone.

Page 10: Vincent Bach Mouthpiece Manual - Brass & Woodwind · PDF file13.-18. Trumpet, Cornet & Fluegelhorn Mouthpieces 18. E Contra-Alto Trumpet Mouthpiece 19. Mega Tone ® Trumpet Mouthpieces

The BackboreThe backbore of a mouthpiece bears acertain relationship to the rim, cup shapeand throat, and to the make and bore ofthe instrument on which the mouthpieceis to be used.

If the backbore of a mouthpiece is toosmall, the high register will be stuffy andflat. If the backbore of a mouthpiece istoo large, the mouthpiece will not havesufficient resistance and the player’sembouchure will soon become exhausted.

The use of the general terms “large” or “small” to describe backbores must beviewed from the standpoint of playingqualities. It is not actually possible toidentify backbores by size alone becausethey also vary in shape and rate of taper.Various combinations of size, shape, andrate of taper make the tone darker ormore brilliant, raise or lower the pitch in one or more registers, increase ordecrease volume.

The ThroatAll standard Bach mouthpieces are madewith medium-sized throats which pro-duce an even register, good intonation, and sufficient endurance for strenuous,all-around work. A small throat does notproduce an easier high register; on thecontrary, it not only chokes the tone but contracts the entire register, makinghigh tones flat or the low tones sharp. A mouthpiece with an excessively largethroat will make playing softly difficult, however, a large throat may help to produce a bigger tone.

NOTE: Numbers and letters are drill bit sizes. The smaller the number, the larger the throat. Generally, the larger the throat, the freer blowing the mouthpiece and the more volumepossible. However, as the throat size increases, the upper register tends to sharpen and theplayer tends to tire more quickly.

MegaTone® MouthpiecesSymphonic and jazz trumpet playershave always experimented with ways tocreate a darker sound by using variousmouthpiece add-ons to add weight andmass. The Bach Mega Tone Mouthpiecetakes these experiments one step further.

To create the Mega Tone, Selmerstarts with genuine Vincent Bachmouthpiece designs and more than dou-bles the outside mass. This darkens thesound and allows you to play at higherdynamic levels without distortion. MegaTone slots extremely well so pitches cen-ter dependably, and a slightly largerthroat affords less resistance and greaterflexibility. The result is a warmer, morepowerful sound that adds a new dimen-sion to concert, pop and jazz playing.

NOTE: The inner contours are preciselythe same as the original Bach Mouthpiece, allowing same basic playability. However, additional mass on the outside producesa darker, more powerful sound. TheMega Tone throat is also slightly largerthan standard to increase response and flexibility.

Bach Mega Tone Standard Models (See pages 19-20, 26-28) are readilyavailable for trumpet, cornet, fluegel-horn, small shank tenor trombone, largeshank tenor trombone • bass tromboneand tuba (sousaphone). All other Bachmodels (including screw-rim) can bespecial ordered.

Screw-Rim MouthpiecesScrew-rim mouthpieces enable a playerto combine any rim with any cup or anyshank. Players can switch from trumpetto fluegelhorn to cornet, from a richsymphonic tone to screaming jazz, orfrom an instrument with a standardmouthpiece receiver to another with anunusual taper—all using the rim that ismost familiar and comfortable to them.Screw-rim mouthpieces also allow forcup/rim combinations that cannot bemanufactured as solid mouthpieces.

Be aware that all rims will not“match-up” with all underparts. Forproper fit, the cup diameter of theunderpart should be the same as orsmaller than the inside diameter of therim. Underparts smaller in diameter canbe hand machined to match the largerrim. (Smaller underparts should not beused unless machined to match the larg-er rim.) If a player tries to match a largediameter underpart to a smaller diameterrim, an “overhang” occurs in the cup. This may adversely affect the playingqualities of the mouthpiece.

A complete listing of screw-rimmouthpiece model numbers can befound on page 29.

Lucite rims are also available for play-ers exposed to extreme temperatures, players with dental problems or playerswith silver allergies.

Custom DesignedMouthpiecesIn addition to the variety of standardmodels listed in the Bach MouthpieceManual, custom designed mouthpiecesmay be specially ordered, allowing forany combination of rim, cup, throat and backbore designs. Many special requestscan be created as solid mouthpieces, although some combinations can only bemanufactured as a screw-rim mouthpiece.

Special ShanksThe shank (stem) of a mouthpiece musthave the correct diameter and taper inorder to fit snugly. The mouthpiece mustbe inserted a certain distance into thereceiver tube of the instrument in orderto give the best playing results. Thesedimensions have been calculated to allowfor a reasonable amount of wear, andafter years of use, the mouthpiece will fitup to 1⁄16" further into the receiver tubeof the instrument.

If an instrument’s pitch is flat, themouthpiece should not be modified to fit further in than the distance indicated by the diagrams on page 32, nor shouldthe mouthpipe be cut. The proper placeto shorten the length of the tubing is atthe main tuning slide, where the bore is cylindrical.

Special Shanks, continuedThe shanks of Bach mouthpieces have

a Morse taper No. 1 (.050 inch per inch)and represent the most practical averagesize suitable for all standard makes ofAmerican brass instruments.

Bach can manufacture a special shank to fit practically any mouthpiece receiver.Generally, all that is needed is the brandname and model number of the instrument. If in doubt, obtain either asample mouthpiece that will fit properly,or accurate shank length and taper measurements. Common special shankmouthpieces include:

1. B & H or Besson Cornet Shanks2. “Old Model” Olds Cornet Shanks3. Couesnon Fluegelhorn Shanks4. “Old Style Besson” Shank on

Bach Tenor Trombone Mouthpiece5. “Bass” Trombone Shank on Bach

Tenor Trombone Mouthpiece6. “Tenor” Trombone Shank on Bach

Bass Trombone Mouthpiece7. Conn Shank for models 8H,

88H, 72H, etc.8. Large (European) Shank for Tuba

Special FinishesSilver-plate is the standard finish on allBach mouthpieces. For those allergic tosilver but not to gold, a gold-platedmouthpiece is the least costly solution. For those who are also sensitive to gold, a screw-rim mouthpiece with a Luciterim will solve the problem.

Keep Your Mouthpiece CleanIf sediment, food or dust collect insideyour mouthpiece, the throat and thebackbore will gradually become smaller. This will interfere with the response, tone quality and intonation of yourinstrument. Clean your mouthpiece atleast once each week, brushing out theinside with a mouthpiece brush andsoapy water to maintain the originalresponse and intonation. If the silver-plating of your mouthpiece has worn off, the mouthpiece should either be refinished or discarded. Caution:Exposure to raw brass can lead to anallergic reaction or poisoning.

* Bach fluegelhorn mouthpieces are regularly stocked in those model numbers marked with an asterisk in the chart (all other standard Bach trumpet rimsizes are available on special order). They have identical rims, but deeper, fluegelhorn-style cups, a larger throat and backbore. The deeper cups produce a dark tone of lyric quality. Their fundamental component is intense; the upper partials are reduced to a minimum.

Do not attempt to play fluegelhorn with a refitted cornet or trumpet mouthpiece as you will be more likely to play out of tune and not get the richsound characteristic of the fluegelhorn.

With the exception of the “junior” mouthpieces, Nos. 30E and 32E, Bach tuba mouthpieces can be used equally well on BB and E tuba. There is nogood reason for making mouthpieces for E tuba any smaller or shallower, because a player using an E tuba actually transposes a fourth and uses theinstrument in the lower register, for which a larger-sized mouthpiece is to be given preference. Nos. 7, 18, 24W and 24AW have larger backbores.
