2 Greetings Allen Village staff & students and welcome to the Student of the Month section of the Allen Village Voice school newspaper. This section is over students who have appropriately behaved in class, who have met/exceeded expectations, and who have completed all of their work, as of Feburary 2014. The criteria needed to become a student of the month are: I Good grades I Participation in class I No tardies I A good attendance record I Meeting/exceeding all expectations I Completing and turning in all assignments The first female Student of the Month is.... Written By: Mariel Adan Yaret Padilla! I got the chance to talk to Yaret and ask her some questions about her being the student of the month. One of the questions I got to ask her was, did she expect to be the first person to be voted the Student of the Month? “No”, Yaret replied, it came as a surprise to me; I didn’t expect to be the one voted Student of the Month. Another question I got to ask her was why she thinks she got voted to be Student of the Month. She replied by saying ”Motivation, determination and the ability to never give up is what made me become the person I am to this day”. The last question I asked her was dealing with her future goals and what career she would like to pursue. She said that she plans to get scholarships that will help her out in college and fulfill her dream of becoming a physician. She then adds that her mom is the source of her motivation and constantly encourages her to try her best and never give up. Good luck to everyone aiming to become one of the next people to be voted Student of the Month. I am looking forward to talking to you! Recently,!I!had!the!chance!to!speak!to!Daniel!&!get!his!reaction!towards!being!selected!male!Student!Of!The!Month.!When!I!sat!down!with!Daniel!I!got!to!ask!him!some!questions!too.!I!asked!Daniel!if!he!expected!to!become!student!of!the!month,!&!he!said!no.!Daniel!said!no,!he!didn’t!expect!to!become!the!male!student!of!the!month!because!he!feels!that!he!is!equal!to!everyone!else.!It’s!always!a!good!thing!to!humble!yourself!like!Daniel!did,!so!that!we!don’t!become!conceded!&!look!down!on!others.!I!also!asked!Daniel!what!motivated!him!to!be!such!a!good!student,!&!he!said!that!along!with!himself!&!his!girlfriend,!is!the!fact!that!he!is!looking!towards!a!great!future!&!a!great!career.!!I!even!asked!Daniel!if!it!was!hard!to!maintain!good!grades,!good!behavior,!&!a!positive!attitude,!&!Daniel!said!that!it!wasn’t!hard!at!all.!Instead!he!says!that!it!just!takes!dedication,!time,!&!patience!in!order!to!achieve!something!that!you!desire!to!achieve.!Another!question!that!I!asked!Daniel!was!if!he!sees!himself!earning!the!tittle!of!male!student!of!the!month!again,!&!he!said!that!he!honestly!doesn’t!know…!but,!he!says!that!he!will!continue!to!do!the!things!that!he!has!already!done!to!earn!the!tittle!of!male!student!of!the!month.!I!even!asked!Daniel!what!it!is!that!he!wishes!to!achieve!from!receiving!an!education,!Daniel!responded!by!saying!that!he!wishes!to!gain!more!knowledge,!better!communication!skills!with!others,!&!a!better!understanding!of!knowledge!in!general.!!

School Uniforms and Bullying Written by: Diamond Smith Why do schools require students to wear uniforms? What does bullying have to do with school uniforms? To answer these questions, uniforms were placed in school because children were being bullied about there choice of clothes. Kids who have name brand shoes and name brand clothes think they are better than anybody else in the school. It makes the other kids feel ashamed because they can’t afford those clothes. School uniforms helped prevent some of the bullying that were in the schools. Bullying is one of the main problems schools today. For example, a little girl named Katie Webb killed herself because she was being teased about her clothes and hair. We are going to school to learn and get the knowledge we need for college, not coming to school to worry about what people going to think about you what you are wearing. Just be yourself and stop worrying what people are going to think about you. Being you is the most important thing in life. School isn’t going to be around forever. People judge people everyday in our everyday lives. I always say,” I’m just as good as anyone else”, because I know I’m able to wear and do whatever I want to wear. So when kids bully you, ignore them and walk away. It’s just a waist of your time listening to that stuff, since most of the schools wear uniforms, you wouldn’t have to worry about someone teasing you all the time. !

President!Obama!has!made!an!attempt!to!budget!SSI!for!current!SSI!receivers!and!future!SSI!receivers.!The!recent!CPI!proposal!is!supposed!to!cause!the!$223!Billion!to!be!spent!.23%!to!.3%!slower.!If!this!plan!does!take!into!action!the!only!question!left!will!be!will!there!still!be!money!left!for!our!generation.!(Allen!Village)!Every!paycheck!you!receive!will!have!a!set!amount!of!dollars!extracted.!It!goes!toward!not!only!your!retirement!but!also!others!retirement!as!well.!If!individuals!in!the!workforce!retire,!we!will!have!to!carry!out!their!retirement!funds.!!!!! In!the!future!with!the!way!things!are!looking!no!one!will!be!able!to!receive!SSI.!Even!the!current!working!generation!may!not!have!income!for!the!future!to!fall!back!upon.!There!are!also!many!serious!drawbacks!for!the!disabled.!People!with!disabilities!aren’t!going!to!receive!SSI!and!they!are!the!one’s!who!need!it!most.!Disabled!children!will!not!be!able!to!provide!for!themselves,!as!well!as!there!family!members.!Some!families!depend!on!SSI!to!take!care!of!their!families;!it’s!there!only!income.!!!! !! A!possible!solution!to!preserve!the!SSI!funding!could!be!to!could!be!to!form!a!bracket!for!every!individual.!Each!individual!would!have!everything!they’ve!saved!for!their!SSI!put!away!and!put!towards!there!own!individual!retirement.!We!are!looking!at!a!The!pros!to!this!solution!is!it!could!very!well!save!the!United!States!millions!of!dollars,!but!one!of!the!cons!would!be!the!longevity!and!the!time!this!plan!would!take.!We!are!looking!at!a!plan!that!could!take!anywhere!from!five!to!eight!years!to!gather!up!all!the!information!regarding!working!citizens!of!the!United!States,!and!categorizing!all!that!information!into!retirement!funding.!The!only!question!that!remains!unanswered!for!Allen!Village!students!is!will!I!be!able!to!retire!peacefully?!Or!will!I!have!to!continue!thriving!in!the!workforce.!!!!!!!
