The health care landscape has been transformed many times since our opening in 1968. As we enter Swiss Village’s 45th Anniversary Year, the r e g u l a t o r y a n d reimbursement changes are happening at an accelerated pace. Swiss Village is being impacted by these changes and organizationally we are working to shape a future that will serve well Swiss Village’s current and future residents and employees. To proactively address the evolving care delivery environment Swiss Village

is entering into a collaborative relationship with Woodlawn Hospital. Both organizations share a commitment to providing the best care possible to those that we serve. By entering into the Inter-governmental Fund Transfer agreement with the hospital, Swiss Village will have access to training and other resources that will enable us to maintain and enhance excellence in care-giving. This includes use of their educators and training materials. Swiss Village will utilize the hospital’s license to participate in the program, but residents

and employees will continue to experience the same seamless service delivery system across all levels of care. The inter-connectedness of the health care delivery systems will increase as we move into the future. It will be important that Swiss Village utilize these relationships to enhance the resident experience and improve quality of care outcomes. We are committed to making sure that the changes that come will transform our systems in ways that advance the experience of all residents and employees.

WELCOME NEW RESIDENTS

Swiss Village experienced the loss of several residents who called Swiss Village home. Condolences go out to the family and friends of Lois Martin who passed away January 2 at the age of 81. Lois came to Swiss Village in December 2012. Joyce Spitler was at the age of 67 when she passed away on January 5. January 2013 was when she came to Swiss Village. We express our sympathy to the family and friends of Joyce. On January 11 Carole Isch passed away at the age of 72. Carole had been at Swiss Village since January 2013. Our condolences are with Carole’s friends and family. Condolences go out to the family and friends of Clyde Augsburger who passed away January 15 at the age of 86. Clyde came to Swiss Village in May 2009. Helen Bovine was at the age of 73 when she passed away on January 18. December 2012 was when she came to Swiss Village. We express our sympathy to the family and friends of Helen. On January 23 Raymond Double passed away at the age of 92. Raymond had been at Swiss Village since November 2012. Our condolences are with Raymond’s friends and family. Condolences go out to the family and friends of Ernest Liechty who passed away January 28 at the age of 78. Ernest came to Swiss Village in April 2008. Gail Runyon was at the age of 90 when he passed away on January 29. September 2012 was when he came to Swiss Village. We express our sympathy to the family and friends of Gail.

Thaddeus De Wolf is a new resident to Swiss Village since January 10. He has been a Berne resident and is a member of the Cross Community Church. Viola Ringger is a new resident since January 11. She has been a Bluffton resident and is a member of the Apostolic Christian Church. Barbara Schmitz is a new resident since January 15. She has been a Berne resident. Robert Butcher is a new resident to Swiss Village since January 17. He has been a Decatur resident and is a member of the St. Mark’s Methodist Church.

February 1, Mr. Kowalczyk started an Administrator in Training program with Swiss Village to prepare him for a career in the long term health care field. This is a structured program that is mandated by the State of Indiana for anyone wishing to be licensed as a health care administrator. The program will expose Rob to all operational areas of Swiss Village. Rob is no stranger to Swiss

Village. He has been employed by Swiss Village for over 10 years and has worked in dietary, the summer grounds crew, and most recently in the maintenance department. Rob completed a Bachelor's degree in Music in 2007. He is currently pursuing a Master's degree for Healthcare Administration. The AIT program will provide practical experience to enhance his academic program.

1,809 lbs of food was raised by the Arthur & Gloria Muselman Wellness Pavilion Members and the community. The food was donated to Compassionate Ministries Network in Berne and The Lord's Table in Geneva. We would like to thank everyone for their donations.

Swiss Village presents Saturday Night at the Village. Fun free entertainment will be provided the second Saturday of every month from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Saturday, February 9, 2013, Don Smithey will be performing a variety of songs ranging from 1930’s Country, Frank Santra, Elvis, 40’s, 50’s and up, hymns, and a few original songs. Don says that every song has a story, and he loves to relay some of the history of these great songs, as well as his own well traveled stories. Saturday Night at the Village is open to the public and everyone is invited to attend. January started off with tearing down all the Christmas decorations and putting them away for another year. The residents commented that they were sad to see all of the decorations go and how bare everything looks. We shopped at WalMart and Muncie Mall for some after Christmas deals. We started a “canvas” class where everyone learned how to make a snowflake coaster. This class was lead by resident Naomi Wiedekehr. Cooking with Esther turned out a big crowd for “Lasagna Cupcakes”. The residents enjoyed sampling this tasty recipe. With the chilly temperatures outside, the residents have been busy inside learning new games such as Chicken Foot Dominos and Progressive Euchre. One chilly morning, we served hot cappuccino and shortbread cookies and reminisced about keeping warm for the

winter.

As winter winds howled outside a n d s n o w periodically piled up, January was a great month for slowing the pace and settling in for some warm and comforting winter activities in Healthcare. We enjoyed an afternoon together of hot chocolate, conversation and puzzles, and another with a fun movie and puffcorn. Wrapping up the month, we gathered for a homemade soup and sandwich luncheon, sampling some delectable recipes from our cookbook, including hot fudge pudding cake! Chester Longenberger joined us again with his memory-stirring music, and for our birthday party, we enjoyed a return visit from John Habine who sang many Frank Sinatra favorites from days gone by.

More people in America suffer from pain than diabetes, cancer and heart disease combined. When pain lasts for a long time (more than 6 months), it is called chronic pain. Treating chronic pain can be difficult because it varies from person to person. Developing the right treatment plan for your diagnosis is often the work of a multidisciplinary team of medical professionals. When consulting with your doctor, he may refer you to visit a physical and occupational therapist. Be proactive to keep your pain under control. Consult with your doctor and ask if physical and occupational therapy can help you!

What a difference a year can make. Last year around this time we were walking in the courtyard. This year so far, we have had to wear layers. Good thing we've been able to keep warm doing our favorite activiTEAS, while sampling different teas this month. We did bring the cold inside, well just for decorating. There was a demonstration on how to make large snowflakes using paper. Then later in the month, the residents made their own out of popsicle sticks. We made ours blue and white with glitter. The snowflakes were hung in the dining room. In the middle of the month we had a special lunch-in. We had walking tacos. Crushed corn chips, lettuce, cheese, seasoned taco meat, and sour cream. It was a hit!

BLUMENGARTEN ACTIVITIES — Cole Rupp

2013 has started off great in Blumengarten!Residents are trying out some new activities this month!These a c t i v i t i e s include walking to keep our health up in the winter months, hand massage, and coffee klutches. Also every other week, the guys will be meeting with Steve for the session of guy talk! We've enjoyed the snowy weather much better from inside then from the outside and enjoy sitting in front of the beautiful fireplaces in the Blumengarten living rooms. There are several new residents moving in. We are busy making snack mixes to enjoy during our regular Friday night movie night and Of course enjoy a visit from the Kinder Haus kids and making adorable snowman with Teri and Sharon. We anticipate that Blumengarten will have a piano on both floors for residents to enjoy very soon.

All residents are invited to experience the Winter Wellness Journey. Our theme this year is “Back Home Again in Indiana”. We will be studying the State of Indiana over the course of 8 weeks. We will also be encouraging walking, swimming, biking or riding the Nustep on your own. In order to participate, stop by our bookshelf and pick up a binder of information, and then leave the enclosed card with us so we know you are participating. You can participate by doing the

The infant room has had several sensory experiences including finger painting, feeling the snow and watching it snow. They take daily buggy rides and they love to say “Hi” to everyone they see. The toddlers have been busy making crafts with snowflakes and winter scenes. They have talked about where animals sleep in the winter and the children had some fun watching squirrels scurring around after nuts and taking them back up the tree to their home. cream was a fun and exciting activity in the 2 year old room. The three year olds classroom is busy learning about construction and also letters in their name. They made many art projects such as truck tire painting. They also are practicing very hard on cutting with scissors and writing their names. Spring Is Just Around The Corner...

With Spring just around the corner, it is time to think about putting your house up for sale and moving to one of Swiss Village’s newly remodeled independent living apartments. These apartments are scheduled to open this spring. Enjoy all of the amenities Swiss Village has to offer, including free membership to the Wellness Pavilion. Residents living in our independent living apartments now have the option of purchasing bundled service packages which includes discounts for

HAPPY BIRTHDAY STAFF

Swiss Village welcomes several new staff members this month. Kim Harrington is a new LPN and Angie Leyse is a new RN in Healthcare. Sue Cummins is a new employee in Housekeeping. Katie Nichols is a new employee in Dietary.

NEW EMPLOYEES

In May 2013 we will be celebrating the 45th anniversary of Swiss Village. I was a young adult in 1968 when Swiss Village opened. My earliest memories of Swiss Village were hearing my parents talk about the opening and that Grandpa Neuenschwander might move in. Grandma had died about 7 years earlier and he was still living in their home on Hendricks Street. In 1970 Grandpa did move to Swiss Village. We came to visit him a couple of times and then when my first child was born in 1972, I began to bring him to Berne to see his Great-Grandpa. After Grandpa died, I didn’t come to Berne very often. But when my Aunt Lucille Gilliom moved into Swiss Village, I returned again a few times through the years. However, each time I came, Swiss Village had added a new wing or remodeled an area and I would be lost once again. I just couldn’t keep up with all of the changes. It was then in March 2002 that I came to Swiss Village to visit Aunt Lucille that my mother mentioned Swiss Village was looking for a new HR Director. I submitted my resume, interviewed with Daryl, and was selected for the job. Prior to my start date at the end of May 2002, Daryl invited me to come and have lunch with the department heads. While here for that luncheon, Daryl took me on a tour of The Village. Having seen Swiss Village through the years, I had not expected to be so surprised or so lost walking through the buildings. But I was shocked by how long we walked through the buildings seeing sections I didn’t even know existed. I was amazed! I have now been here almost 11 years and we’ve made significant changes since I started – adding a whole new wing, remodeling some wings, adding new services. In 45 years Swiss Village has established a reputation of excellent care and staying on the cutting edge of services. I’m confident we will continue for many years to come.

Valentine’s Day is upon us once again. We see red, white, and pink hearts decorating classrooms and businesses. At Swiss Village we are celebrating Valentine’s Day a bit differently. We are asking that you “Share Some Heart” by making a contribution to the Swiss Village Samaritan’s Endowment Fund. At Swiss Village we are typically caring for 55 residents who are unable to pay for the full cost of their care. Last year we provided over $380,392 in charitable care to those who did not have the financial resources to pay for the full cost of the care they received. That calculates to approximately $19 per day per
