BLUEBELL CHILDREN’S CENTRE NOW OPEN

Two local pubs win awardsAt this week’s national annual industry MA200 Awards, two local pub restaurants, just four miles apart, were announced as winners and highly commended. The Awards recognised The Fox at Willian and The Rusty Gun at St Ippolyts, as the winners and most highly commended in the category of ‘Best Food Offer 2010’.

The Rusty Gun has attracted attention with it’s ‘locally sourced’ ingredients including its home reared rare breed pigs, its own ‘Rusty Gun Bitter’ and a produce shop where local growers and suppliers use the store to market their food.

Jolan d’Souza, head chef of the Rusty Gun, said “the winner here is Hitchin with two of the Nations’ best food led pubs within 3 miles of the centre of the town”.

Whitwell Teddy bears helping Children in Pakistan

In 1986 some knitted teddies were added to a consignment of medicines going to a refugee camp in the Sudan. The doctors were as thrilled as the children: ‘These teddies do more good than the medicines. They cheer the children up, give them hope, and soon they are on the road to recovery’. Teddy knitting began and teddies were added to each consignment of medicine, helping the children to recover and play.

Teddies for Tragedies was formed in 1991 to collect and send teddies to charities who work with children in tragic circumstances.

Cressman’s Corner in Whitwell has been actively supporting the campaign. Pat and Ivor told us “Customers have been busy knitting little teddies for the children in Pakistan. Doctors who are treating children in Pakistan are asking for them, as they have found that children who have their own teddy to cuddle in their cots get better quicker than those who do not have one. Each child keeps his or her own teddy and can take it home so doctors need a continual supply!”

Bluebell Children’s Centre, run by the Pre-school Learning Alliance, held its offi cial opening ceremony of the new Children’s Centre building on Wednesday 28th October 2010. The Launch Event and Opening Ceremony was attended by over 100 guests including

County Councillors, Local Agencies and families within the community. Both Neil Leitch, the Chief Executive of the Pre-school Learning Alliance, and Jane Pitman OBE, Lead Member for all Children’s Services, attended the event to offi cially open the Children’s Centre. Guests enjoyed lunch and refreshments whilst the marquee was fi lled with children’s activities including planting, painting, face painting, fruit pick and mix, sand and water play and much more.

Bluebell Children’s Centre is based within the grounds of Highbury JMI School on Standhill Road in Hitchin and provides information and support for all families with children under fi ve years of age. Bluebell Children’s Centre covers a large semi-rural area including Hitchin South and the villages of Whitwell, Wymondley, Preston, Breachwood Green and St Ippolyts. Services including Baby Bluebells, Bluebell Toddlers, Jumping Joeys, Baby Yoga, Parenting Courses and Village Stay and Play sessions are run from both the centre and community buildings in the area.

Mothers juggling a family often do, and couples with

After the first session there is often a great sense of relief and lightness. Something positive is starting to happen and it feels good. Having someone to help you just lightens the load, especially when they know exactly how to help.

Often a good nights sleep is needed, I teach you how to achieve that and wake refreshed in the morning. You can cope better then. We look at what is causing the stress and deal with each little piece of the jigsaw in a soft and reassuring way.

You start to feel brighter and calmer. You are using some good techniques during the day to keep you on track. The tension in your body has gone. You feel some relief as your emotions start to even out. You feel more confident. People around you are starting to behave better. They are noticing the change in you and adjusting their behaviour to suit.

Within a short period you really do feel a different person, and it feels good. And all it took was time to think of yourself and ask for help.

If your car was playing up, stalling, smoking and unreliable you would get it fixed. If your child was upset you would do something about it. So look after yourself! If you are worrying, stressed, or emotional, come, deal with it without drugs or cover up medications. Do it naturally. I have the answers for you.

I have just returned from the most amazing experience following the Inca Trail in Peru. This involved climbing up to 4200m using over 10,000 steps and covering 50km over 4 days through mountains, jungle and rough terrain. The temperatures ranged from 30C plus during the day to sub zero at night.

There were around 30 people on the trek; many of these were parents whose children had also been cared for at Great Ormond Street. I have nearly raised £5000 now which means I am half way to

my target of £10,000.Great Ormond Street needs to raise £50m each

year to rebuild and refurbish the hospital to fund the most up to date equipment to support research for breakthrough treatments and to provide support services for families and patients.

Chez Jerome is an established restaurant in Dunstable. There has been a restaurant here for over 30 years, with a number of

different owners, and under a few different names. In October 2007, Jerome and Lina Dehoux took over the restaurant and they have now developed Chez Jerome into a Contemporary French Cuisine restaurant.

Jerome Dehoux, is an award winning French Chef who has worked all over the world and has more than 15 years experience. His reputation has grown internationally, built on his work in several Michelin Star Hotels in France, Switzerland, and the USA. He arrived back in the UK in 2004 and was waiting for another Visa to go back to the USA, when he met his wife, Lina, who has been managing restaurants for the past 10 years. Lina’s passion for European cuisine coupled with Jerome’s culinary skills have created a magical blend of menus at Chez Jerome.

The atmosphere is warm, professional but friendly with rustic surroundings. With a European theme the concise menu is a tempting combination of Mediterranean flavours, French theory and superb English produce. The emphasis is on quality and seasonal freshness and every dish is a reflection of just this, allowing the ingredients to shine through.

There are a choice of Set or A la carte menus with mouth watering dishes available; an example of the starters would include King prawns & crayfish wrapped with Scottish smoked salmon ,pesto mayonnaise dressing served with a fine avocado mousse or Roast flat mushrooms in garlic butter with Parmesan flakes. Main courses include Sautéed rib of English veal with calvados – apple jus Potato puree & vegetables and Seared lamb fillet crusted with herbs mustard, herbs aromatique jus, noisette potatoes & vegetables. There is a good selection of vegetarian dishes and some fantastic desserts including a gluten free option.

Well, firstly let me pass on Season’s Greetings to you and your

families from both Caren and myself. Hopefully there has been the odd snippet since we began putting these articles together that you have put into practice in your garden, whether you are the proud owner of acres or like most of us have a much more modest area to look out upon.

I think the most important thing about gardening, generally, is that it should not be a chore and you should enjoy getting out there and ‘doing the odd bit’ and getting some fresh air. Take on jobs you can do and don’t take on too much. After all, pottering around the garden is supposed to be a relaxing way to spend some time, well that’s what my Mum told me and she wasn’t often wrong (apart from when she said that brussel sprouts were good for me, obviously!)

You may be thinking , ”Why doesn’t he get on and tell us what to do out there this month instead of wittering on”. Well dear reader,

the time has come, at last, when the only fork you should need this month is the one spearing the turkey and those sprouts. You really will be doing more harm than good in most cases over the Christmas period to try doing too much. The ground will be either, frozen, muddy or under snow – it’s time to let Mother Nature do her stuff, let the garden hibernate for a while and wait a month or so before starting again.

Of course, we should keep clearing the fallen leaves off the lawn with a rake; it still needs light and air. Hopefully, that last cut in November will see the lawn through till February assuming we have a normal winter (and not like last year’s brute).

Am I right in thinking that because it’s what you see being sold all over the place that most families who want a real Christmas tree, go for one that has been sawn off at the bottom. These trees can be a real pain as the festive season gets under way because of the readiness of the needles to drop as the tree dries

out. Nobody wants to take the care of a surgeon to retrieve that present from behind the tree just to avoid getting showered with pine needles. This needle drop can be reduced quite a bit by treating your tree as you would a bunch of flowers. When you get your one home cut about an inch off the bottom. This exposes the fresh wood. Then get one of those tree holders (DIY stores and garden centres sell them) that have a reservoir for water in the base and also keeps the tree secured. Keep it topped up with water. To be on the safe side, check it’s level daily. The first year I had one I was really surprised how much water it took up, but the needles stayed on the tree better.

As I’ve said before but it is now worth repeating, as gardeners we should not forget that around us are wild birds and other creatures that will be really struggling at this time of year to survive. The supermarkets seem to do a rare old trade in December, either we are all eating twice as much or there are plenty of leftovers. Yes, if you can afford to put some bird food out, there will be some very grateful visitors to your garden but to tell you the truth they won’t mind if it’s just leftovers or just the odd crusts, it all goes a long way to helping our feathered friends out… and they’re fun to watch too while the washing up takes place.

This month we look at teaching Recall to your puppy. Build on a puppy’s insecurity whilst controlling the exercise session; puppies are

born to follow so use this natural instinct to help teach the recall. Often handlers are worried about letting a puppy off the lead.• Take your puppy for short little expeditions each

day on different ground, make sure you show the pup the wonders of the world and that it does not find them out for itself. Remember it is your walk not the puppies, the puppy must think that this is something you do each day and he is now joining in.

• Be unpredictable, change direction every now and then. This will keep the pup alert and focused on you

• Only reward your puppy for returning on your terms, if the pup returns to you randomly throughout the exercise session ignore and carry on with your walk.

• Remember to use the come command only as the

puppy moves towards you• This may be during play OR whilst the pup is

free running• Keep sessions short and sweet • Avoid chase games or going towards your puppy,

teach him that it is fun to make up the ground between you and him.

Singing in harmony is a fantastic thing to do. It’s relaxing, liberating, builds

confidence and, of course, sounds wonderful. Whether it’s children in the playground, fans at a football stadium or mates down the local, we all love a good old sing-song, and none more so than the members of ‘Shock-o-la’. Set up in 2008 by professional singer Nicky Clark, the group has brought together people from all walks of life – teachers, doctors, mums, …even a plumber! Meeting at St. Ippolyts Village Hall, they sing songs, make friends, have a laugh and occasionally pop down the pub afterwards!

The Group recently did a

fundraiser event to contribute to a sound system & hearing loop for the Village Hall. The songs covered classics from the 30s right through to the present day, including Glenn Miller, The Mamas and Papas, Abba and Madonna (with some imaginative accessories) Although the group usually sings acapella, a live band was drafted in for some songs to give a bit more variety, add a quiz, a bar and glow-sticks & it became a full evening’s entertainment!

It was a huge achievement for Shock-o-la as most of them had only ever sung in the shower or in school choirs before the group was formed and here they were singing solos with the band and four part

acapella harmonies in public! The atmosphere was amazing, with so many familiar faces from the village and a wonderful feeling of community spirit. And the best news - they raised £772.50, doing what they love!

The group are always looking for new members, so please get in touch if you think it may be for you.‘Shock-o-la’ meets 8-10pm on Thursday evenings at St. Ippolyts Village Hall. No experience or music reading skills necessary and no audition process, just turn up and sing.

Although an African city, Cape Town has a marked European influence and visitors can experience the excitement of Africa from the comforts of First World surroundings.

Cape Town’s unique setting means that it can be enjoyed from various vantage points: Table Mountain and Lion’s Head provide breathtaking vistas over the

city bowl and the Cape peninsula with its beautiful beaches; trips to Robben Island offer a dramatic sweep of scenery across to Table Bay; and harbour tours and old buildings await exploration at the cosmopolitan Waterfront. Mountain has been proclaimed a nature reserve, protecting its diverse floral species, some unique to its slopes. A Swiss-built rotating cable car carries visitors smoothly up the mountain and back. It is possible to climb the mountain via different routes, but inexperienced hikers should take care because Cape Town is prone to sudden weather changes. The walk up can take anything between one and four hours depending on the route and level of fitness.

The Victoria and Albert Waterfront is a working harbour, historical site and a shopping and entertainment development which has now become one of Cape Town’s most visited tourist attractions. The waterfront offers everything from shopping malls, and arts and crafts markets, to live music, cinemas, buskers and a variety of festivals throughout the year. There are also more than 70 eateries ranging from pubs and fast food outlets to five star restaurants, luxury hotels, and a variety of boat trips, harbour cruises and helicopter charters. The Two Oceans Aquarium is the largest of its kind in Africa and is an impressive display of life in the oceans surrounding the Cape Coast.

Cape Town has some great beaches, but the most easily accessible are on the Atlantic Ocean where the water is unbelievably cold; the locals rarely venture in

beyond knee-high depths. The most popular is Camps Bay beach; a long, wide stretch of golden sand packed with locals and tourists alike and backed by a strip of fashionable bars and restaurants.

Cape Town is only 2 hours ahead of GMT so makes an unusual getaway for a short break or a longer stay holiday, you can fly direct from London in approximately 11 hours then it will only take a further 30 minutes from the airport to the main city centre. Cape Town has a Mediterranean climate with dry summers and wet winters. Winter is between May and August, being influenced by a series of cold fronts. Winters are characterised by heavy rain, particularly on the mountain slopes, strong north-westerly winds, and low temperatures. In summer the weather in Cape Town is warm and dry.

A fascinating city, definitely worth taking your time to explore then once you have made your discoveries why not head off to the Winelands or on safari or maybe even fly to Mauritius the options are endless when you start with Cape Town as your base.
