Your garden

“Love! Why are you wearing that mosquito net for a hat, you haven’t taken it off for three days, You look like a cross between one of Dr Who’s enemies and Neil Armstrong.”

“It’s actually my bee keepers veil and I could be called out at any minute to deal with an invasive bee swarm around the village.”

Well honestly I think your time would be better spent in the vegetable garden,” comes a concerned reply from the kitchen.

That’s just why I’ve decided to keep bees. Apparently up to one third of the worlds food depends on bees for pollination as without them, flowers would not form any fruit. In 2010, the United Nations placed a value on insect pollination at £134 billion. Though putting a value on things is understandable it rather misses the point that biodiversity is priceless as without bees we could be in real trouble and very hungry to boot.

“The Vicar is at the door love, looks very red in the face, I hope you mowed the churchyard this week.”My mind recalls the near knee high grass around the headstones and my rash promise of help 3 weeks ago.“Ok dear, he’s probably come to chat about flower arranging with you.” I reply from the lounge, returning my thoughts to our winged friends.

The thing is nobody can really confirm what’s happening to our diminishing bee species but what we can do is encourage them into our gardens and provide a source of nourishment for them at inclement periods.

Bees like humans, see in colour and are trichromatic, meaning they see three main colours, ultra violet, blue and green. Flowers of different colour form ultraviolet patterns on their petals as a kind of bee landing pad, directing them to pollen and the plants reproductive parts. At which point the bee takes on the role of a garden cupid,swopping pollen between male and female receptors and in turn causing the plant to

bare fruit.

Keep things simple in the garden and unlike the missus remember bees can’t see in red!!,

maybe use bold pale flowers, avoiding elaborate doubles that produce a showy bloom, less emphasis on decoration and more on pollination.

Bees love the trumpet like flowers of penstemon and foxgloves and the majority of the rosaceous family that encompasses

most of our fruit trees.

If growing cut flowers for the house, why not mix rows with veg, encouraging bees to pollinate

both crops.

“Well it looks like your prayers have been answered love, the Vicar has got a swarm of bees at the

churchyard.” “I bet it’s in that holly by the gate, swarms aren’t fussy where they

attach themselves.” I reply with an air of confidence

“No love it’s on the spire, I told him you’ll be up in 10 minutes as you

already have your bee keepers hood and veil on! Good luck.”

Everyone is talking about Twitter these days and for good reason. Twitter is an amazing platform and one that every small business should embrace as part of their overall social media marketing strategy. If you’re operating a small business, here are four ways you can use Twitter e ectively:

Create a M.A.P.The rst step to e ectively using Twitter is to create a M.A.P. or Marketing Action Plan for your business. Plan your content up front.

Check out #NorthantshourSimply put #Northantshour into your Twitter search every Thursday evening between 8pm-9pm and jump into the conversation of Northamptonshire businesses talking and chatting.

Engage in “two-way” conversations.The last thing you want to do on Twitter is stu the pipelines with constant “stu ” about your business. In addition to the items listed on your M.A.P., you also want to make sure that you are taking advantage of what social media is all about – fostering relationships and building a community around your brand. To do this, you need to engage in two-way conversations. Maintain a non-annoying frequency.

Attend a TweetUp to learn more about Twitter.The best way of learning about Twitter is to attend a TweetUp. This is where people meet face to face, and tweet as they go. It is very causal, and they are often conducted in pubs / restaurants etc. You can nd out more by following @DavTweetUp or @greenumbr3lla

Experts agree that Twitter is a must have tool for today’s small business owner. By spending a little time tweeting each day and selectively building up a targeted following, you can give your small business a big boost. And best of all…it’s free!

A toilet that won’t flush, sinks that won’t empty, grates that overflow, and an unpleasant smell are all tell-tale signs that there is a blockage or damage to the pipes, drains or sewers that service your property. But who is responsible for carrying out the work?

Since October 2011, homeowners are responsible only for the maintenance of pipes or drains on their own property. Once they cross the boundary line onto the pavement or road, they become the responsibility of the water company. In addition, the water company is liable for all shared sewers (i.e. drains that meet from more than one building) even if they are on private land.

So, how do you find out where the blockage is? A chat with a neighbour or a quick look into the inspection chamber should give you a clue. Most blockages can be easily cleared and you could have a go yourself with drainage rods, but as it’s a dirty, smelly job, or if you are struggling to locate the source, you might want to call in a specialist.

Occasionally, blockages occur due to a collapsed or broken drain, in which case you will need a professional to inspect the damage and quote for remedial work. You can choose whoever you like to repair drains on your own property.

The Private Patient

PD JamesAt a private clinic in Dorset, Rhoda Gradwyn has booked an operation to remove a serious facial scar – one which she has borne for many years, but ‘no longer has need of.’ The operation is a

success, but by morning Rhoda Gradwyn is dead, and suspicion falls on the staff of Cheverell Manor. Commander Adam Dalgliesh, poet and policeman, is summoned from London to investigate, and before long finds himself dealing with not one, but two unexplained deaths and a whole host of dark secrets.

This is the latest in James’ Dalgliesh series, and it bears all the familiar hallmarks of the earlier novels – a death in a closed community, a complicated back story, and a steady move to the conclusion. As ever, the supporting characters are just as important as Dalgliesh himself – both those on his team and those who inhabit Cheverell Manor – and they are deftly drawn, with real and believable traits.

For the reader, the experience is more about contemplation than guesswork – the identity of the killer is revealed three quarters of the way through, and the rest of the novel is concerned with motivation and moral dilemmas. There is also a significant amount of tying up of loose ends from the ongoing stories of Dalgliesh and his colleagues, and the ending is rich and reflective. Some would argue that James’ novels are an acquired taste, being so far from the run of the mill ‘whodunnit’ – I would say they are a taste well worth the acquiring.

The Family from One End Street

Eve GarnettThis 1930’s classic has recently been re-issued as a Puffin Modern Classic, and rightly so. Telling the story of Mr and Mrs Ruggles and their seven children, it

has captivated children for many years and will do so for many more.

This is the first in Garnett’s series and introduces the family – Dad Jo, Mum Rosie and the children: Lily Rose, Kate, twins Jim and John, young Jo, Peg and baby William. The first chapter tells us how they all got their names and sets the scene, then each subsequent section details one of their many adventures.

All of the Ruggles have an uncanny knack for getting into scrapes – from Lily Rose’s attempt to help her mother with a customer’s washing, which doesn’t go to plan, to the tale of clever Kate’s lost grammar school hat, and the daring escapades of Jim and John. The book ends with ‘The Perfect Day’ at the Cart Horse parade in London, riding on Uncle Charlie’s dust cart. Each episode is beautifully illustrated with Garnett’s line drawings.

This may not be the most fashionable or up to date novel, but it has stood the test of time. Any reader will find much to enjoy, but particularly girls age 8 and over will take the Ruggles to their hearts and perhaps wish for the freedom and fun enjoyed by the children in days long gone.

A good book for the holidays

Rainy Day Ideas

Add goggle eyes to turn your splatters into monsters

Rain catcher (age 2 and up)

* Plastic bottle

* Wooden spoon

* Tray or plastic bowl

Cut the lid off a plastic bottle and then place the lid upside down in the top of the bottle so that it acts like a funnel. Tape down the edges if necessary.

Draw lines 1cm apart up the stem of a decorated wooden spoon, starting 1cm from the bottom. Number the increments from 1 up.

For younger children, don’t worry if the lines are different distances apart, you just need some marks and numbers on the rain catcher so they can see the difference over time.

Slot the wooden spoon inside the funnel and place the whole thing in a shallow tray or bowl. Place outside and watch the rain come down.

Blow painting (2 years and up)

* Paint

* Paper or card

* Straws

Drop several large dollops of paint onto the paper. Then, using a straw, get the children to blow the paint in different directions so that the paint splatters across the page. Do this several times with different colours to make a masterpiece.

Popcorn lollipop balls (age 4 and up)

* 2 bags microwave popcorn

* 225 grams butter (plus extra for coating little hands)

* 225 grams sugar

* 1 bag marshmallows

* Lolly sticks or wooden chopsticks

* Cake cases

* Food colouring (optional)

* Sprinkles for decoration

* Ribbon

This recipe makes about 25 small balls.

Pop your popcorn as directed and remove any kernels that may have not popped. Melt butter in medium saucepan and then add the sugar and stir until it dissolves. Add the marshmallows and mix until they are all melted. Add the sauce to your popcorn and mix until it is well coated.

Butter your hands to protect them from the heat (and the goo) and then shape into balls. Stick a skewer in the bottom and leave them to set on greaseproof paper or in paper cake cases. Tie a ribbon bow around the stick for decoration.

For older children go a step further create flowers, butterflies and other shapes.

Scavenger hunt - any age - FREE Write a list of objects onto paper and copy it for how many people/teams are required. Items can be anything from a sock to a stick. Give a list to each of the kids/teams and give them a certain time to be back by. The first one back with all the pieces listed wins.

Make several small batches

of popcorn with different food colouring to create multi-coloured popcorn.

No sew bunting (ages 3 to adult)

* Wallpaper, or patterned or card you’ve decorated yourself - A5 size or larger

* Hole punch

* Scissors

* ¼ inch ribbon or string which is longer than you want for your finished bunting

Use the pattern on this page to cut out triangles.

Punch a hole ½ inch in and ½ inch down from each of the top corners of the triangles.

Thread the ribbon in through one hole and out through the other of each triangle, shifting them down along the ribbon until you have all of your triangles threaded onto the ribbon. Tie off each end and string it up.

No mess marble painting

* Heavy duty zip-lock pouches

* Water-based paint

* Baby oil

* Glitter (optional)

* Packaging tape

To the (heavy-duty) ziplock bag, add the baby oil first, then the water-soluble paint in about a 1:1 ratio. Use two colours of paint per bag, adding glitter if desired. Gently let as much air out as possible, then seal up the bag very well. Use packaging tape along the top of the bag to seal it up completely.

Move the paint around and swirl the colours around without even getting hands dirty!

Make a card frame to go over the front to make the bags even more sturdy and frame the masterpiece at the same time.

Why stick to triangles? You

can make hearts, rectangles –

even stars.

Feature

1960s“I was in love with David Cassidy! Oh wait, that was actually in the seventies so ignore that,” says The Village Emporium’s Karen Shuter. “In the sixties, it was all about Blue Peter, Andy Pandy and my favourite turquoise blue cape, which I wore incessantly during one family holiday.

“In the summer the ice cream man would come around almost every day, and because home freezers were yet to be invented, we would run out with our bowls so we could have ice cream with our tinned mandarins!”

“Most homes didn’t have a phone so if you wanted to call a friend, you would have to ask your parents to accompany you to the phone box with a thrupenny bit! And there was no central heating so you would either have a coal fire or if you were really posh, a gas fire.”

1950s“I was born in Plymouth just as the war was

ending,” explains Keith Parson at Dickies

Workwear. “Because it had been bombed

out, I was sent to live with my aunt in

Cornwall. We were very poor but it’s not

until I look back at that time that I realise

just how difficult life was – we would raid

bakery bins and have our hair cut at home

using a basin and a pair of kitchen scissors.

There would be no money for presents at

Christmas and our tree would be a decorated

branch of holly. I had one pair of boots and

they would be repaired and re-soled to make

them last until I literally couldn’t fit them on

my feet anymore!

“The cinema would be a real treat because

it cost seven pennies; you could watch a

film, cartoon or newsreel featuring reports

from around the world. To be honest, it

didn’t matter what was on – as we only had

a radio in the house, watching those moving

pictures was like a completely new world.

“Still, I do think that there was more of a

sense of community and respect back then.

You didn’t lock your doors, you shared your

rations with neighbours and it was a given

that you would find a job after school, even if

it wasn’t something you really wanted to do.

An opportunity was never

wasted as you never knew

if – or when – the next

one would come along.”

Can you believe that it has been a year since London 2012? We survived the Mayan doomsday of December 21st 2012 unscathed, shivered in winter hats, coats and scarves for way too long and just about managed to avoid falling headlong into a double dip recession. How time flies when you’re having fun!

However, the realisation of how quickly time has passed since Danny Boyle’s spectacular opening ceremony has left the team at The Village Emporium feeling all nostalgic about times gone by. The innocence of childhood, the excitement of new discoveries, embarrassing fashion faux pas, dreams for the future.

And so we sent our intrepid reporter out to ask some of our lovely customers what they remember from decades past...

Do you remember when...?

Page 45: Village Emporium Daventry July/August 2013

1970s“Atari Pong!” laughs Alison Spencer from Shires Antiques. “These computer games

nowadays are more like movies but back in 1972, when my dad came home with an

Atari, which you had to plug into the television to play, we were ridiculously excited

and spent hours playing Pong. It was supposed to be a simulated table tennis game

but in reality it was a load of dots and lines moving back and forth!

Also, my best friend’s parents owned a restaurant so a lot of the early

seventies was summed up by prawn cocktails and Mateus Rosé. Perhaps

not the most ‘legal’ pastime for teenagers but we enjoyed it!”

1980s“I didn’t just have a Sony Walkman,” announces Tracey Bridger from Barefoot

Photographics. “Mine was a bright yellow, underwater Walkman! Although I don’t remember ever submerging myself in the bath to listen to Duran Duran or Spandau Ballet!“Talking of Spandau Ballet, ‘True’ was the

slow dance song at the end of every party. I would always hope that I’d be asked to dance but being tall and reminiscent

of an ironing board, I didn’t get much attention! My life revolved around how to stay fashionable in flat shoes.“Being a hairdresser, I modelled myself on

Kim Wilde and her blonde, backcombed hair and striped tops. Mousse came in during the eighties, which meant that hair could get even bigger without having to use that horrendous wet gel. And Clearasil – I remember many an evening covered in little white dots!”

So what will young people today will reminisce about? Could it be games consoles, Harry Potter or will they cringe at their photos on Facebook with dip dye hair? Will they have to explain to their children what Facebook was? One person’s fond memory is another person’s cringe moment!

1990s“Oh no!” gasps Victoria Wormall from

Harper’s and Harper’s Boutique on Sheaf

Street. “You have reminded me of so many

funny but embarrassing moments! Global

Hypercolour t-shirts that would change

colour when you started sweating; that

was attractive. Dungarees coupled with a

paisley hooded top. Byker Grove, Wizbit

and New Kids on the Block; I was in love

with Joey McIntyre as was everyone else so

I decided to like Jon instead to be different!

“When I was little, all I wanted to be

when I grew up was somebody in

Dallas or Dynasty. I loved the fashion,

the hair, the huge shoulder pads! In

fact, it’s still a running joke amongst

my friends. They wanted to be a

nurse or teacher; I couldn’t wait to

become Alexis Carrington...

“My parents were all about home-

cooked, healthy meals so I used to

lust after the junk food they wouldn’t

let me eat. Viennettas, Wham Bars,

Findus Crispy Pancakes... Did you

know that a boring jam sandwich can be

transformed into a thing of wonder when

covered in batter, deep fried and sprinkled

with sugar in the school snack hall? And

snowballs at Christmas – I’m pretty sure

that’s where my obsession with cocktails

stemmed from!”

hey... it’s time for new school

shoes

The summer holidays are fast approaching, but before you know it, you’ll be digging out those school shoes in September and realising they no longer fit. Luckily, with the help of Anne, owner of children and ladies’ shoe shop, Niki-Lu’s, help is at hand. Member of the Society of Shoe Fitters, IFRA and Children’s Foot Health Register, Anne has some top tips when buying shoes.

Always have your child’s feet measured by a qualified fitter and ensure that both feet are measured as they are rarely the same size. There is no standardisation of shoe sizing in the UK, so an experienced fitter will use their knowledge to interpret a correct fit.

Whenever possible, buy footwear made from natural materials, such as leather and cotton. Not only will man-made material make feet perspire, leading to fungal infections, but leather footwear moulds to the natural shape of your foot, making them more comfortable.

As children grow in fits and starts, their shoes should be checked every 10 to 12 weeks. Remember that a good fitter will only recommend new shoes if needed.

Never wear hand-me-downs as they take on the previous owner’s foot shape, meaning bad news for your child’s feet. And finally, make sure you throw out those too-small socks as they can restrict growth.

Our feet are designed to carry our body weight and give us mobility, but we only remember how precious they are when they hurt! We should all look after our feet, but they are at their most vulnerable in our early years.

The past few months have been a busy exciting times here at LoveBallet Dance Company. We had 5 pupils audition (Aidan Lesingham, Nadia Lesingham, Izzy Holloway, Ella Stephenson and Isla Johnson and all 5 were successfully awarded a place with the Regional Youth Ballet to perform Les Sylphides at the Mill in Banbury from the 24th – 26th May. It involved some intense training which the pupils thoroughly enjoyed the challenges of and their performance was spectacular on stage.

Following that audition, 2 pupils Aidan Lesingham and Phoebe Willetts auditioned for the English Youth Ballet (part of the English National Ballet) performance of Swan Lake, which will take place in Oxford in September this year. There was a lot of competition for places, with over 140 auditioning for only 50 places. Both LoveBallet pupils were awarded places and will be performing with a professional dancer from the English National Ballet, what an experience that will be.

Amongst the dance success, we are currently working through the last phase of the planned opening of the Brand New LoveBallet Dance Studio. This will be the LoveBallet HQ (the other branches will still continue) but having our very own studio will enable us to expand further and develop our classes more. The Studio will be fantastic, there will be 2 studio’s both complete with sprung wooden dance floors, barre’s will line the walls and mirrors too. Spot lights in the ceiling to create a lovely ambience for dance and air conditioning and a very good heating system too. The new studio in at Insight Park, Welsh Road East in Southam and we are due to have an opening party at the end of June.

Please keep your eyes peeled for new classes starting in September such as Musical Theatre, Ballroom and Latin (Adults and Children), Cheerleading, Adult Tap, Adult Ballet, Zumba, Baby Ballet, Mini Movers, Stretch & Conditioning, Boogie and Bounce & GCSE Dance – as well as all our other existing classes.

Eat seasonallyJuly and August should bring some of the hottest days of the year! Apart from watering new plants and seedlings you will find some other handy hints below to help you through the summer gardening season.

Look after your lawns.At this time of year lawns take heavy punishment, and a little time spent on maintenance will pay big dividends. If there is any moss in the lawn this can be removed with a lawn rake also pull out any perennial weeds. Then apply any of the proprietary brands of lawn fertiliser; carefully follow the directions on the box with regard to application. This will then give you a lawn to be proud of right into the autumn.

And your rosesRoses, remove all flowers that are finished, if you allow them to produce seed pods the plant will not be able to produce more flowers, instead using all its energy to produce seeds. Also remove any flower buds that are failing to open and rotting, these buds can harbour disease.

Greenhouse tipsIn the greenhouse, temperatures can reach great heights at this time of the year, so shading must be introduced. There are many types of shading materials available at retail outlets, and are easy to fit.

Here’s a few ideas on what to sow nowJuly: Early July is the time to plant out your late cauliflower, cabbage and brussel sprout plants. Also remember to dust the stems with an anti cabbage root fly preparation soon after planting. Cabbage root fly lay their eggs in the stem, then the hatching maggots eat their way down to the roots and by eating the roots destroy the plant.

August: Now is the time to pinch out the centre shoot of your tomato plants, in order to concentrate the plants growing energy on filling out the existing tomatoes, rather than producing more growth and more flowers.

50ml balsamic vinegar

100g beetroot

100g fine green beans

500g maris piper potatoes

1 pint double cream

2tsp creamed horseradish

1 tsp tomato puree

500ml chicken stock

1 glass red wine

50g butter

50ml cream

Olive oil

Salt & pepper

BeetrootPlace the whole beetroot with a pinch of salt and splash of oil in the centre of a sheet of foil, wrap and bake for 35 min at 180˚C until tender. Allow to cool, then remove skin by scraping with a knife. Cut into eighth’s. Set to one side.

Blanch the beans for 3 minutes in salted boiling water then cool under tap and leave to one side.

Mash Peel and dicethe potatoes into even size pieces. Do not cut too small otherwise the potato will absorb too much water and become wet. Place in a pan of cold water, bring to boil and cook on a low simmer until tender. In the restaurant I would put my potatoes through a Moulin but a standard masher will be fine. Once cooked, drain and mash the potatoes then season and add the horseradish, cream & butter.

To bring the whole dish together, warm an oven-proof frying pan, remove the breasts from the pigeon (or ask your butcher to do this for you), season skin side and oil. Place in dry frying pan and cook for 2 minutes either side. Remove from pan to a plate to rest. Deglaze the hot pan with red wine, balsamic and chicken stock, add the teaspoon of tomato puree then reduce to half.

To serve, add beetroot to sauce with the pigeon breasts, warm the potatoes and beans and then plate up.

Look good, feel good

The Oxford English Dictionary defines the verb ‘meditate’ as: to focus one’s mind for a period of time, in silence or with the aid of chanting, for religious or spiritual purposes, or as a method of relaxation. For many, some form of meditation is part of their daily routine

There are many different meditation techniques, including: transcendental meditation, prayer, Zen meditation, Taoist meditation, mindfulness meditation, and Buddhist meditation. Some methods require the body to be absolutely still, or to be moved with controlled deliberation, while other types allow for free movement of the body. While the methods are different, the end goal of all types of meditation is to lead to a mind that is at peace and free from stress by the use of quiet contemplation and reflection. For many, meditation is part of their daily routine.

If practiced regularly, meditation can bring about healing of both the body and the mind.

One of the physical benefits of meditation is a decrease in blood pressure. In addition there can be an improvement in breathing due to the increase of air flow that gets to the lungs. Practitioners also find that their resting heart rate is lower which takes some of the stress off their hearts. Meditation is also said to promote a youthful appearance and help in chronic diseases such as allergies and arthritis. It can also help in post operative healing, enhance the immune system by increasing the activity of ‘natural-killer cells’ and reduce the action of viruses.

Calm your mind

Ladies may find it reduces pre menstrual tension, and because evidence shows that chemicals in the body that are associated with stress are lower in practitioners, it can lead to less anxiety for all. Some find it helps improve their mood and can decrease depression. This is because it has been found to increase serotonin production which influences mood and behaviour.

Those who meditate say they become less bothered by little things which they previously magnified and turned into serious things. Through meditation, they learn to detach and live in the here and now, rather than worrying about the past or future.

Practitioners also find that meditation improves their memory and levels of concentration. This makes them more productive.

A further benefit is known as ‘Knowledge of Self.’ Meditation allows a deeper understanding of our inner self and some feel that through meditation they gain a better understanding of their life’s purpose and become more self confident.

Out & about

Spices don’t just make your food tasty, they have health benefits too.

Spices have been around for thousands of years. They were first imported to Europe in the Middle Ages, selling for huge amounts of money and making the merchants who sold them very rich. They are used to colour, flavour and preserve food. Many are thought to have medicinal properties and some are used in traditional and religious ceremonies.

There are hundreds of different kinds of spices and they can be seeds, roots, bark or vegetative substances. Most are bought as dried powders. Whole seeds will keep longer, but they need to be ground before use.

Chilli peppers can be eaten fresh, or used dry as a powder or flakes. They are used to add heat to curries, chilli con carne, pasta dishes, dips and even chocolate desserts. Generally, the smaller the chilli, the hotter it is. The capsaicin found in chilli gives it its heat and has been said to relieve pain and prevent stomach ulcers and stomach cancer.

Ginger is another versatile spice. The fresh root is added to many Asian and Indian dishes, and the powder is used to flavour cakes, biscuits and desserts. The spice can decrease nausea and motion sickness, and ease digestive problems.

Turmeric is the spice that gives curry powder and mustard their deep yellow colour. It is also used

as a dye and food colouring. In India, it is highly regarded and is used in wedding ceremonies. Turmeric is from the same family as ginger. Although normally used as a powder, fresh chunks can be used in pickles.

Both ginger and turmeric are anti-inflammatories and can help people suffering from arthritis and Alzheimer’s disease. They are also high in antioxidants that can help protect against disease.

Cinnamon is a warming, fragrant spice that is taken from the dried inner bark of a tropical tree. It is used in cakes and desserts and many savoury dishes. Research shows that it may lower blood sugar levels and so can be beneficial for sufferers of Type 2 diabetes. It is also thought to help with toothache and bad breath. Some studies have found that smelling cinnamon can increase alertness and brain function.

And finally, the queen of spices. Saffron is the world’s most expensive spice. It was first cultivated in Greece and is derived from the dried stigmas of the saffron crocus. It takes 250,000 stigmas to make just half a kilogram of the spice. Saffron gives food a beautiful yellow-orange colour. It is used in Middle Eastern cookery, rice dishes and also desserts and sweets, including marzipan. It has a long history in traditional medicine, and has been used to treat epilepsy, depression, menstrual disorders and fatigue.

Spice up your life!
