Welcome

JAMBO!Goodthingscometothosewhowait…
You might have noticed – and we do admit – that we are going through an awkward phase. After overhauling the Food Court, our next phase of renovations is necessary.
We want to create a modern shopping complex for you; one with more parking, cooler shops, tastier restaurants and everything else you love.
As the French aristocrat, writer, poet, and pioneering aviator
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry wrote: “I must endure the presence of
a few caterpillars if I wish to become acquainted with the butter-
flies.” So we ask you to kindly bear with the dust, the drilling and
the droves of trucks hauling construction material to and from The
Village Market. It will soon be over.
In this issue of ‘Village Beat’ our Village Mom, Kamal Kaur, returns
after a long hiatus with something for the teens. Our sensual contrib-
utor, Amondi Buyu, goes skin deep at Kaya Spa while Reema Doshi goes
off-road with some 4x4 tyre tips.
Why is everyone talking about Dr Simeons’ hCG weight loss programme?
Our Well Being column tells you precisely why and how you can lose that
extra weight. Staying on that health beat is Belladonna Health Services.
It’s not just a pharmacy any more but a clinic and delivery service as well.
Your trusted travel agent, Bunson Travel Services, introduces Bunson
Safari, providing holidaymakers with carefully planned safaris, leisure
packages, sport and event packages within Kenya, Africa and the rest of
the world. Read all about this in our Escape column.
We have some exciting events for the coming months beginning
with the Nairobi VIP Candy Store Fair and the annual Kitenge Festival.
Also look out for Garden World, a three-day event showcasing
garden furniture, landscapers, plants and outdoor accessories.
It’s set to be an exciting, sunshiny season. So come out and shop
or dine at The Village Market. And when you’re at home, check
out our new-look website (www.villagemarket-kenya.com)
and tell us what you think. We love hearing from you!
Always

Music stars across the spectrum, from opera to jazz, met up at The Village Market to raise funds for a boys’ home in Nairobi.
The Poperazzi Charity Concert was held at Tamambo
Bar & Grill on 9 August to raise funds for the Ahadi Boys
Home Education Fund. The Kenyan international opera
stars Rhonda Odeng and Zak Njoroge were performing
alongside the American rhythm and blues singer Aimée
Crowl. A jazz trio performed with Aimée Crowl. The
Poperazzi Concert introduced a fusion of opera, pop
and jazz for the first time in Kenya and was an exciting
evening for music lovers. The line-up included:
• rhodaOdeng: Kenya’s international opera star, with
a career spanning over 20 years. She has performed
at the National Presidential Prayer Breakfast in
Washington, DC, the Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony
for the late Prof Wangari Maathai, and Glynde-
bourne Opera Festival in England. She has also
performed with orchestras and musicians in North
America, Asia and Europe.
• Zachariahnjoroge: Zak has performed in
concerts and with orchestras in Europe, Kenya,
and at Carnegie Hall in New York. A scholarship
recipient of Buchmann-Mehta School of Music
Programme for Outstanding Foreign Students,
Zak is an inspiration to young Kenyan musicians.
• Aiméecrowl: The R&B singer released her first
album in 2007. She was performing solo and in duet with
the opera stars.
• nduatiKareithi: One of Kenya’s most talented pianists,
Nduati has performed with many musicians in Kenya and
previously with both Rhoda and Zak.
The event was organised by Joe Waweru, an alumnus
of Ahadi Boys, and was sponsored by the Tamarind Group,
Schofield & Associates Advocates, Technology House and
The Village Market and its management.

Cool, calm, collected: three words that describe Morgan Muranda. Nothing seems to surprise him or get on his
nerves. He is a paced gentleman and if it’s not in his gait, it’s in his voice – a raspy yet soothing and accommodating sound. Lest you think Morgan is a yoga instructor at The Village Market, he is, in fact, the official driver of managing director Hamed Ehsani.
Owing to the sensitive nature of Morgan’s
job, it is inevitable that he should take on a
composed predisposition.
Before he joined The Village Market, Morgan
had been a technician and driver with a pres-
tigious company in Nairobi. The job had taken
him all over Africa on various assignments. The
company later offered Morgan a position at its
branch in the Rwandan capital, Kigali.
“I had to decline the job in Rwanda because
I didn’t want to be away from my family,” says
Morgan.
SensitiveIt was this turn of events that led to him being
hired by The Village Market in 1999. The
bowling hall was being built at the time and the
company needed a driver to ferry the techni-
cians home, sometimes late at night.
“I also ran errands at the office, often
assisting the accounts department with banking
and other minor transactions,” recalls Morgan.
Eventually, in 2008, he rose to the position
of managing director’s driver. Morgan doesn’t
underestimate the sensitive nature of his job.
“When I am driving the MD, it feels like I have
the entire Village Market in the car. I have to
be very careful. I moderate my speed, unless
otherwise advised.”
While others would be nervous in such
a situation, Morgan takes it in his stride. His
flexibility and professionalism come in handy
and he is able to match his schedule with the
managing director’s programme. Speaking of
his boss, Morgan notes that Mr Ehsani is a busy
man, but that he is also humble.
“Our MD doesn’t boss his staff around. When
he wants to send me on an errand, for instance,
he always says: ‘Morgan, can you do me a
favour?’ His humility is an example to me and the
rest of the staff as to how we should treat others.
Away from the demands of his job, Morgan
enjoys spending time with his family. He and his
wife Nancy have three daughters and a son and
are also raising two boys they adopted from
Morgan’s late sister.
“If I had it my way, I would want to spend
every minute with my wife and children, but
I must work hard to give my children a good
education,” says Morgan.
How does Nancy cope with his late hours?
“After 30 years of marriage, it’s safe to say
that my wife understand the demands of my
job. Three days after our wedding, I had to
leave for a work assignment that took an entire
month.”
His children also have to work with their
father’s schedule. They look forward to seeing
him at the breakfast table, especially over the
weekend.
Morgan is a member of the Baha’i faith,
having learned about it in high school. He has
taught others about the faith in Kenya, Zambia,
Tanzania and Uganda. During our interview, he
read from a page of the ‘Epistle to the Son of
the Wolf’:
“And if thine eyes be turned towards justice,
choose thou for thy neighbour that which thou
choosest for thyself. Humility exalteth man to
the heaven of glory and power, whilst pride
abaseth him to the depths of wretchedness and
degradation.”
DisciplinedMorgan says that when he retires he would like
to carry on sharing the message of the Baha’i
faith so that it can transform others as it has
transformed him.
“I would also like to do some farming on my
small farm back at home, just to make ends
meet and care for my family,” he says.
As a word of encouragement, Morgan asks
drivers in other organisations to find joy in their
work and not to look down on others.
“It doesn’t matter the position you are in or
how much you earn,” he says. “What matters is
how disciplined you are, as prosperity comes
from discipline.”

rises to match these high
standards,” he said.
Mr Ehsani also pointed to
the 2011 Taste Awards – when
The Village Market clinched the
award for Best Food Court – as
a challenge for the shopping
complex to do even better.
“We have come to be known
as a market leader in our Food
Court design,” he said. “While
we appreciate the honour, we
cannot aff ord to sit back and
let that get to our heads.”
Indeed, the Food Court is
vibrant, with diners thronging
the venue each day to experi-
ence the modern setting with
its wide choice of international
restaurants.
ExcitingThe second phase of renovations has
begun at the covered parking area.
Improvements in this second phase
will include additional parking, an
enhanced Nakumatt and new retail
outlets above the current Nakumatt
facility.
“This is an exciting time for The
Village Market,” said Mr Ehsani. “Our
redevelopment plans will transform the
complex and provide shoppers with an
even more enjoyable experience.”
Future redevelopment plans, due
to begin later this year, include 35
modern retail outlets and more restau-
rant outlets as well as an overhaul of
the centre’s recreation facilities.
“Our redevelopment plans are
consistent with the growth of Nairobi
in general and our area specifi cally,”
The Village Market has begun an ambitious multi-phase redevelopment project to
upgrade and improve its off ering. The fi rst phase of redevelopment –
an overhaul of the central Food Court
area – is nearing completion. After
signifi cant renovations, the new-look
Food Court is now the most talked-
about eating destination in Nairobi.
It has taken a few months to get the
job done in the face of various chal-
lenges, not the least of which was the
heavy rain that pounded the country in
October and November.
TastefulWork on the site nevertheless went
ahead as scheduled. Among its many
state-of-the-art fi ttings, the tastefully
designed Food Court now features
new tiles, Ferrari sails, new water
features, new lighting, a state-of-the-
art sound system, infra-red heaters,
new furniture, more plants and fl owers
and improved access and ramps for
disabled customers.
Managing director Hamed Ehsani
said the renovations could not have
happened at a better time. “A number
of high quality restaurants are coming
to The Village Market and we found it
necessary to ensure the Food Court
said Mr Ehsani. “We hope to create
more business and employment
opportunities and a renewed sense of
place for Nairobi. Our goal has always
been to drive the retail industry in
Kenya and be at the forefront of inno-
vation within our sector.”
The extensive upgrade and modern-
isation plans will aff ect the current
recreation operations, with the closure
of the water park, mini golf, cinemas
and bowling facilities to make way for
the construction project.
The upgraded facility will provide
exciting new recreation options
for children and young adults. The
management and board of directors of
The Village Market are committed to
providing the best possible shopping
experience as part of the overall
advancement of the retail industry in
Nairobi.

THE GHOSTS OF HAPPY VALLEY: Searching for the Lost World of Africa’s Infamous AristocratsAuthor: Juliet BarnesPrice: KES 1,900
‘Happy Valley’ came to be a byword for hedonistic excess. The nickname give to the Wanjohi Valley in the Kenya Highlands, it commemorated the small community of a uent white expatriates who settled there between the wars. Happy Valley became infamous under the in uence of troubled socialite Lady Idina Sackville, whose life was told in Frances Osborne’s best-selling ‘The Bolter’. The era culminated in the notorious murder of the Earl of Erroll in 1941, the investigation of which laid bare the decadence and irresponsibility of Happy Valley, chronicled in another bestseller, James Fox’s ‘White Mischief’. Juliet Barnes, who has lived in Kenya all her life and whose grandparents knew some of the Happy Valley set, decided to nd out. A book set alongside such singular evocations of Africa’s strange colonial history as ‘The African House’ and ‘The Zanzibar Chest’, ‘The Ghost of Happy Valley’ is a mesmerising blend of travel narrative, social history and personal quest.
BOOKwOrMA STREET CAT NAMED BOBAuthor: James BowenPrice: KES 900
When James Bowen found an injured ginger street cat curled up in the hallway of his sheltered accommodation, he had no idea just how much his life was about to change. James was living hand to mouth on the streets of London and the last thing he needed was a pet. Yet James couldn’t resist helping the strikingly intelligent tom-cat, whom he christened Bob. Soon the two were inseparable and their diverse, comic and occasionally dangerous adventures would transform both their lives, slowly healing the scars of each other’s troubled pasts. ‘A Street Cat Named Bob’ is a moving and uplifting story that will touch the heart of anyone who reads it.
AL-SHABAAB ON SOMALIA: The History and Ideology of a Militant Islamist Group (2005-2012)Author: Stig Jarle HansenPrice: KES 4,250
Since early 2007 a new breed of combatants has appeared on the streets of Mogadishu and other towns in Somalia: Al-Shabaab, or ‘The Youth’, the only self-proclaimed branch of Al-Qaeda to have gained acceptance (and praise) from Ayman al-Zawahiri and ‘AQ central’ in Afghanistan. An o shoot of the Islamic Courts Union, which spilt in 2006, Al-Shabaab has imposed Sharia law and is heavily in uenced by local clan structures within Somalia itself. It remains an infamous and widely discussed, yet little-researched and poorly understood, Islamist group. Hansen’s remarkable book attempts to go beyond the media headlines and simplistic analyses based in alarmist or localist narratives. Al-Shabaab emerges as a hybrid Islamist organisation that combines a strong streak of Somali nationalism with the rhetorical obligations on international jihadism, thereby attracting a not insigni cant number of foreign ghters to its ranks.
I DON’T EAT BLACKS! The Life of Richard O. OndengAuthor: Ingvard Wilhelmsen Price: KES 1,200
While studying in the United States in the early 1960s, Richard Ondeng went out to eat at a restaurant in Kansas after attending a church service. The waiter blocked them at the door, saying: “We don’t serve blacks.” Jokingly, Richard responded: “That’s ne. I don’t eat blacks.” Not knowing how to respond, the waiter let Richard and his friends in. That incident sums up Richard’s character and his determined Christian faith. Born and raised in Siaya, Richard studied at Maseno and then at Kagumo Teachers’ Training College before serving as a headmaster and later supervisor of schools. He rose to the position of secretary of the Christian Churches Educational Association (CCEA) and later deputy general secretary of the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK). Richard also served as the secretary of the National Pentecostal Church on Valley Road during the formative years. This biography of Richard Ondeng’s life shows a man who was committed to his faith in God, who loved and cared for his wife and children and who had a passion for education in Kenya, especially for girls. His story of quiet determination and standing up for the truth will be an inspiration for many.

Why is everyone talking about Dr Simeons’ hCG weight loss programme?
•Becauseitworksforeveryone•Rapid,safeweightlossinall therightplaces•You’llkeepitoff,too•Andnowit’savailablein EastAfrica
17
The hCG weight loss programme is one of the world’s best-known weight
loss programmes because it’s effec-tive, safe and easy.
There is possibly no better way to
shed unwanted and unhealthy pounds
quickly. Many people face obesity
problems now. High blood pressure,
diabetes and other weight-related
problems are becoming common.
People are more and more aware
of their state of health – particularly
their weight and fat percentage.
Some will pay a fortune to lose weight
while most will try hard to keep from
becoming overweight.
SuccessDr Simeons’ hCG weight loss
programme has become a leader
in the weight loss industry and not
just a fad.
The hCG diet was
pioneered by Dr Albert T.
W. Simeons in the early
1950s and has gained
a steady momentum
ever since. Many
people have had
success with
the Dr Simeons
weight loss
programme.
Since 2000 it
has achieved
the status of
a diet craze,
featuring on
hundreds of TV
shows including
Fox News, NBC,
Oprah, CBS and
in Kevin Trudeau’s
best-selling book,
‘The Weight Loss
Cure’.
The reason for this
explosive growth is that
Dr Simeons’ hCG weight loss
programme works. It’s that simple. It is
considered one of the fastest ways to
lose weight and keep it off.
Not all weight loss programmes are
equal. The nutritionists at Elixir Health
Shop are there to see you through to
full success. The instructions, shopping
list and other materials, along with
support, are most important. The
proven instructions and daily personal
support are the means to great
success.
You will benefit from the personal
guidance, step-by-step instructions,
shopping lists, etc. It is a fail-proof diet
package. Ask for this programme from
Elixir Health Shop. The in-house quali-
fied nutritionist is available to give you
advice.
Seventipsforlosingweight1.eathealthyThe diet plays a key role in any weight
loss programme. You can exercise
every day and fail to lose weight if you
continue to eat the wrong foods. It is
important to eat three healthy meals
a day. Include salads and lean meat.
Remember, calories count, so the basic
formula of ‘calories in, calories out’ still
applies. Weight loss means achieving a
net calorie deficit.
2.snackingReplace snacks with healthy choices
such as dried fruit, a cup of green tea
and other herbal teas or vegetables.
Vegetables are good because they are
filling, high in nutrients and fibre and
low on calories.
3.workingoutBreak the habit of coming home from
work, watching TV and then having
dinner. To be successful in losing
weight, you need a sustained workout
programme. Ideally, set aside one hour
per day, four to five days per week.
4.workoutintensityWhen you go to the gym, you need
to work out intensely to lose weight
faster. Try and interchange between
the jogger, the bike and the cross
trainer. That way you will get one hour
of good cardio all over your body,
which is ideal for weight loss.
5.KeepitfunOne of the main reasons people fail to
achieve sustained weight loss is that
they fail to maintain their workouts
because they get bored. Try and keep
it fun and original by incorporating
different methods such as skipping,
boxing, outdoor running, outdoor
biking or swimming. This way, you can
keep your workouts new and inter-
esting while managing to work out
different muscles.
6.resistancetrainingMost fitness experts agree that
combining cardio with resistance
training is the best way to achieve
sustained weight loss. Just because
you are trying to lose weight doesn’t
mean you can’t lift weights to bulk
up your upper muscles mass. Use the
weights and bench press to improve
the upper body. Creatine is a health
supplement that has been used
successfully to give more energy and
power to lift weights.
7.MotivationSet yourself small targets every two
weeks instead of one big target. This
makes it look much more achievable.
Losing weight on a sustainable basis
requires a lot of motivation.

The Little Prince School in Kibera has come on by leaps and bounds, offering the most disadvantaged and deserving pupils in Nairobi’s renowned Kibera slum district a premium education free of charge.
With the motto ‘What is essential is invis-
ible to the eyes’, the school, originally made
of iron sheets, was built as a permanent
structure with donations from a private
local donor in response to its educational
success. The permanent school has a
capacity of 350 pupils with eight classes, a
library, staff room, art laboratory, theatre,
computer classroom, dining hall, kitchen
and administrative offices. It also has a pre-
school section and includes a baby class,
nursery and pre-unit class.
The school’s operation is funded by
donations from well-wishers via fund-
raising events. This year The Village Market
partnered with the Little Prince School in
support of the school’s fundraising golf
tourney and dinner at the Windsor Hotel
and Country Club. The Village Market
management advertised the event in the
Village Beat for free, gave the school space
witin the complex to sell tickets, offered
raffle prizes and holiday vouchers to the
school’s fundraising activities and sent a
team of Village Market staff to the golf
tourney and fundraising dinner. At the end
of the day, the school raised more than
KES1million.

Pharmacy has come a long way over the years. Today it is a modern, professional and
safe way to treat and manage human ailments. Belladonna Pharmacy at The Village Market is no ordinary pill shop; it is well known for its wide variety of medicinal, herbal and beauty products as well as efficient and professional service.
A focus of interest is the new ultra-
modern design of the pharmacy, which
is in line with international pharmacy

standards in the developed world. It
now takes the form of a supermarket,
with rows of open shelves allowing
customers to choose various medicinal
products, especially those that don’t
require a prescription. This customer-
friendly approach is different from the
old ‘shopkeeper’ model whereby drugs
were dispensed over the counter. In
addition, the pharmacy’s new home
delivery service is becoming increasingly
popular within the neighbourhood.
LifestyleLocated within the pharmacy is Bella-
donna Healthcare Services, which has
qualified, full-time family physicians
and nurses. Its services include medical
consultations, basic blood tests and
chronic disease management as well
as health, wellness and lifestyle advice.
The clinic also offers therapeutic home

One of the best features anyone can flaunt is the kind of healthy, glowing, blemish-
free skin that can only be acquired from enough rest, adequate exercise, healthy eating and, most importantly, a well deserved facial treatment.
At the Kaya Spa, I have arranged
my first-ever facial. I’m one of
those people who keep trying the
do-it-yourself option before finally
admitting I need the professionals.
After subjecting my face to the trauma
of squeezed lemon and raw garlic
toner, I tell Lucy, the beauty specialist,
that my face needs help.
She explains that treating your skin
to a regular facial will cleanse your face
thoroughly and take away any toxins
and dead skin cells.
As Lucy walks me to my treatment
room, I know my journey to luxury has
begun. First, she performs a double
cleansing. This is to strip my face of
any make-up or moisturiser that may
be hiding the real condition of my skin.
She then uses a magnifying lamp to
carry out a ‘face mapping’ to determine
my basic skin type and condition, and
recommends the anti-ageing facial.
RelaxingLucy uses a chemical exfoliation
involving enzymes and acids to loosen
the bond between skin cells.
Next, she directs a thin relaxing
vapour of warm steam to my face.
This helps soften any blackheads
and whiteheads to be extracted. She
removes them and applies a toner to
close the pores.
After the toning, she eases into
the facial massage and works the
various pressure points. This improves
the blood circulation and results in a
glowing and healthy-looking skin.
Then a masque is applied for about
20 minutes. This has a luxurious
cooling effect, going deep into the
skin to remove impurities. It also helps
to close pores and make the skin firm.
Lucy gives me a soothing foot rub. She
then splashes on a toner and applies
a light moisturiser and sunscreen. I
am revived and refreshed and my skin
feels absolutely wonderful.

experience in this sector. Bunson
Safari can provide clients with the best

ating optimum rates with some of the

Bunson Safari aims to add value
through its ability to handle every
aspect of travel, from air fares to
booking accommodation in the Masai
Mara to providing travel insurance to
arranging tickets for various events.
Bunson Safari is not a one-stop travel
shop; it is a family business catering for
a range of clients, from large multi-
nationals to individual travellers in
search of adventure.
As well as dealing with leisure
travel and tours, Bunson has handled
weddings in East Africa, popular
culture events such as the Johannes-
burg Joy of Jazz Festival, and various
sporting events. The company handled
the 2010 FIFA World Cup and is agent
for the 2014 World Cup. In addition
to football, the company continues to
handle packages for Formula 1, Rugby
Sevens and other sporting events.
As well as providing a professional
getaway. Whether they are travelling
to Delhi to watch the Formula 1; to the
Masai Mara to see the Great Migration;
or simply booking a flight to Mombasa,
Bunson will provide them with a
professional service.
Fun fact: Christmas 1948 was the
company’s first venture into travel from
being an insurance outfit. Children
at a school in the UK could not travel
back to Kenya to be with their families
during the school holidays, so Bunson
chartered a 27-seater Viking aircraft
to bring them out. It was a three-day
journey from London with various
stops before landing at Nairobi. The
trip was so successful that more
charters were scheduled, marking the
launch of Bunson Travel Services.

A Toyota Hilux Double Cab – that is the car of my dreams! I ogle any Double Cab that
passes me by on the road. As much as I have been told they are uncom-fortable to drive, I have totally loved being driven in one.
There are many such four-wheel-
drive vehicles you may want, love,
have or even just rent to drive. But why
would you need such a vehicle?
There are several reasons I can think
of. Depending on the kind of work you
do, our roads in the major towns and
outskirts would definitely need a big
sturdy car to deal with the conditions. Or
you might be into off-roading events. Or
like me, you may just love to travel and
follow the trail where it takes you. And,
finally, you may be a fashionista who
loves driving a big car in the city.
The reason I bring this up is because
it is relevant to the type of tyres you fit.
You can choose from on-road tyres (as
fitted, for example, to an SUV), driven
mainly on tarmac roads; off-road tyres
(for example, a Land Rover Defender),
driven mainly on dirt or murram roads;
and on/off-road tyres which, as you
have probably guessed, I would put on
my Double Cab to drive both on tarmac
and on my trips away in the bundus.
QualityThe choice of tyre size, as I got to
know well during my years in tyre
marketing, depends on the manufac-
turer’s specifications. Take the example
of my Double Cab (it surely will be
mine soon). The older models of this
Hilux took 245 70 R16 or 31 x 10.5 R15
tyres. But the newer versions come
fitted with 265 65 R17 or 265 70 R16.
The alternative tyre sizes are stated in
the car manual – or you could just ask
our Kingsway Tyres technicians.
The quality of tyre you choose is
important. Whether you are on the
road or off it, you want to fit tyres
you can rely on. The brands at our
Kingsway Tyres outlets include Apollo,
BF Goodrich, Hercules, Kumho and
Michelin. They cater for all your vehicle
applications. For example, Michelin XZL
or BF Goodrich Mud Terrains are your
‘pure bliss’ off road tyres. For on-and-
off-road use, the Apollo Hawkz, BF
Goodrich All Terrains, Kumho Road
Venture KL78s and Michelin Latitude
Cross will all give you a safe and
comfortable driving experience.
SafetyYour bottom line for 4x4 tyres should
be safety, durability and performance
at an affordable price.
Product aside, tyre service
is another key factor in main-
taining your 4x4 tyres and
vehicle. The part of your tyre
actually in contact with the
road is only about the size
of a man’s hand; this link
grips the road, carries
the entire weight of your
car, responds to driving
input (steering, accelera-
tion, braking) and absorbs
every obstacle on the
road. So you have to make
sure you don’t wear off your
tread without noticing.
You can do this by checking
your tyre pressures regularly
(the correct pressures are shown
in your manual and on a sticker on

the driver’s door latch) and get your
wheels balanced and aligned, too.
Be sure, especially with 4x4s, not
to overlook the spare wheel. Check
the pressure and see that the tyre is
in good serviceable condition. If it
has been damaged, get it repaired or
replaced.
These are just a few quick points
for you to check when sourcing tyres
for your 4x4 vehicle. At least, it will
help me when I upgrade my vehicle
from my current Toyota IST (with the
Michelin XM2 tyres that are still going
strong) to a Double Cab.

*Kamal Kaur is an unofficial taxi-driver to her two kids, impulsive shopper, media person and foodie.
When I was growing up, I went through a phase when my mom, from
being the most awesome mom in the world, turned into someone who told me to keep my room clean and spend less time on the phone. From being a woman who indulged my whims, she became stricter with me and insisted I studied harder.
Now that I’m a mom I find myself
giving the same lectures to my daughter
and son – mostly my daughter. I’m not
as strict, but I do stress and worry about
basic mommy things.
ActivitiesOne thing I’m totally OK with is when
she asks if she can hang out with her
friends at The Village Market. I know
you’ll think I have strong bias, but
where else will you get all the fantastic
activities being offered in one place
for everyone, from little kids to senior
citizens and everyone in between?
My kids love to go bowling and as
they’ve grown older they find it’s not
that uncool to go for a game with me.
They also love to watch movies, play
mini golf and spend a day at the water
slides. I’ve been once on those slides and
for a few moments I felt I had a mean-
ingful conversation with my Maker.
For the teens, it’s a great mall to hang
out and do stuff with their friends. There
is so much to choose from and, if all else
fails, they can always watch a movie and
have a great meal in the Food Court.
The best thing is that it’s a family
atmosphere and you don’t feel
awkward being there with your younger
kids. Also the ‘No alcohol served to
under 18s’ rule is strictly enforced.
You just can’t go wrong letting your
kids hang out at The Village Market.
