PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear Members of the Villanova College Family, Welcome back to the final term of the year. This term is an important time for our Year 12 students as they begin the final six weeks of lessons prior to their assessment block. Most of these young men are aware of the short time remaining of their secondary schooling experience and understand the need to finish well to optimise their efforts across this year. It is usual during this stage of the year for Year 12 students to need the counsel of the adults in our community as their youthful enthusiasm can sometimes be misdirected. We keep our Year 12 students and their families in our prayers during this term. The 2016 China Tour was a great success and the members of the touring party were very complimentary in their praise of the students and staff. Cultural tours such as the trip to China take an enormous amount of planning and organisation. Thank you to Ms Sally Byron, Mrs Mylan Warren, Mr Pat Zietsch and the parents who accompanied this tour for their support of the students. Thank you to the many parents who spent time working with the consultants from Fielding Nair and Architectus as we prepare the College Master Plan for the future. There were a number of workshops conducted during the two days and I am confident the voices of students, staff and parents were listened to and heard. I will keep our community informed as this important work unfolds. Next Monday 10th October, the Parents and Friends Association will be holding their Annual General Meeting. All parents are most welcome to attend all P and F meetings and I am confident you will find them to be an informative and friendly environment and a wonderful opportunity to meet other parents and members of staff. The AGM will commence at 6.00pm in the College Library. We welcome to the College new staff members, Mrs Margaret Stevenson who is replacing Mrs Susan Hill in the Middle School Learning Enrichment Team and Ms Linda Stone who is replacing Mrs Juanita Jacobs who is currently on leave for Term Four. Mrs Terri Dillon will be Acting Curriculum Area Leader-Senior Science this term. Please keep in your prayers the family of Mrs Kath Underhill following the death of her father Nicholas George Bogiatzis last week. The funeral will be held in Townsville early next week. PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGEDear Members of the Villanova College Family,

Welcome back to the final term of the year. This term is an important time for our Year 12 students as they begin the final six weeks of lessons prior to their assessment block. Most of these young men are aware of the short time remaining of their secondary schooling experience and understand the need to finish well to optimise their efforts across this year. HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOLWalking out onto a sporting field in a grand final situation is an experience like no other. I’m always in awe of the anticipation and state of mind of both the crowd and player when I watch the AFL and NRL games such as those played last weekend. If your team is lucky enough to make it, there is nothing you won’t wear or cheer for in the hopes of winning that trophy. If your team is in transition, you pick a side based on things such as the “underdog”, individual players who have made an impression or sometimes it’s the suburb or state with which you identify.

I would like to extend Villanova’s support and best wishes to Christian Welch (College Captain 2011 and current Melbourne Storm player) for his mighty performance last Sunday evening. How blessed we are for having worked with such a humble and distinctive gentleman who has proven that hard work and high standards are indeed rewarded in life.

Term 4 is upon us and is a time that staff in the Junior School begin reflecting on the growth of their students over 2016. This term is one that seems to “disappear”, being only eight weeks in duration, so it’s fair to say that all classrooms have been straight back into curriculum tasks from the first lesson on Tuesday morning. The boys, after what I can only assume has been a restful break in the finest of Spring weather, have one last opportunity to show their best selves.

Organisational skills may finally come together for some young men – better late than never! Social and emotional resilience may be more consistent as confidence and security in self-esteem continues to grow. Academic achievements may be improving in some subjects with more determination and focus applied to assessment tasks.

Whatever your son’s goals might be, it is essential to make this explicit as a family and with your class teacher within the first week. Writing your hopes or ambitions down and putting it somewhere prominent – where it’s noticed and acts as a reminder – means we can be more accountable for ensuring we make changes to achieve it. Parents and staff can be more supportive of individuals when they know exactly what is considered most important to a boy when the world is so busy around them. Pick one or two things and do them brilliantly – if you work hard and truly apply yourself then there is no better sense of satisfaction.

College dress standards are always of great importance, and I am expecting that the boys’ haircuts meet the College requirements as per the diary, that the uniforms are worn in full and with pride, and that the boys have replenished stationery supplies and are aware of any new weekly timetable changes for this term. If the boys are following the guidelines agreed upon by the College, parents and staff then they can focus on their academic and co-curricular activities with no distractions or time lost borrowing items.

As previously mentioned, Mr Greg O’Neill, Head of Middle School, is making himself available in the Junior School whilst I travel with Mr Steven Bremner in the USA visiting Augustinian Schools for future planning, teaching and learning strategies. Mrs Leanne Addley and Mrs Nichole Rouhliadeff, as part of the Junior School Administration Team, are also available for communication and assistance over the next fortnight. Please feel free to seek any information or guidance from these professionals who will be able to act on my behalf until Wednesday of Week 3.

To the boys in the Junior School, I will be hearing about your work and of course the funny things you say and do each day through the staff so be sure to set the bar high. This is a perfect opportunity for Year 6 students to show Mr O’Neill, your soon to be Head of School, the manners and talent that are about to move into Year 7. Year 5s, you will soon be communicating with the new students for 2017 which puts you in a leadership position that requires you to use all your knowledge to be the perfect role model. Heads up gentlemen, time to step out onto the grand final term for 2016.

Mr Stephen Rouhliadeff, Head of Junior School

QUESTION OF THE WEEK 28th Sunday Ordinary Time, 9th October

Did you know?

• The term ‘leper’ in biblical material probably referred to people who were suffering from a variety of skin disorders.

Question of the Week. Luke 17:11 - 19

As Jesus entered one of the villages, ten lepers came to meet him. They stood some way off and called to him, ‘Jesus! Master! Take pity on us.’

The ‘leprosy’ of this text can be seen as a symbol for anything which forms a barrier between people. Who stands ‘some way off’ whom you could bring closer to you?

MUSICWieneke Family Bursary

The heats for the Wieneke Family Bursary were held on Tuesday morning and I was very pleased with the standard of music presented. All students who nominated and participated in this aspect of the Bursary are to be commended for their courage and efforts – well done! Unfortunately, only five musicians from each school can be selected as finalists; I am pleased to announce the following students will be competing in the Bursary Finals next Tuesday evening:

Kai Asnicar Flute

Lachlan Beake Guitar

Tobey Bernal Voice

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our musicians the best of luck for next week. Information regarding the finals has been sent home to participating students from the Music Office. On Sunday 16th October, our Jazz Ensemble, Big Band and Irish Ensemble 1 will be performing at the annual Loreto College ‘Live and Wired’ event. Our students will be joined by ensembles from Loreto and St Laurence’s College. It is a great afternoon of music on the lawn at Loreto; bring your esky and camping chair for a relaxing time!

Guitar Ensemble 1 Workshop

Our Senior Guitar ensemble have been invited to participate in a workshop with musicians from Anglican Church Grammar School on Tuesday 11th October, before school. Students will need to find their own transport to the venue and will be transported back to the College for morning Pastoral. Notes have been sent home to families via email – these must be returned ASAP to the Music Office.

Strings and Choirs at the Cathedral

Our annual String and Choral extravaganza will be happening again

this October with our choral and string ensembles performing in St Stephen’s Cathedral, Brisbane, on 23rd October. Please make sure you have received the letter outlining extra rehearsal times prior to this event. Students will be required at the Cathedral by 1:30pm on the Sunday; the concert commences around 2pm. All musicians and families are invited to an afternoon tea on the green to the East of the Cathedral after the concert.

We are seeking some assistance from the parents of string students in the preparation for the afternoon tea provided for all attendees. Should you wish to participate in this aspect of the event, please leave your name and number with the Music Office (3394 5691) and we will ensure you are contacted.

Big Event 2016

This year we will be hosting a combined big event with students from Villanova College, Loreto College, and the Young Conservatorium. Students in our Symphonic Band and the Combined Symphony Orchestra will be performing in the Hanrahan Theatre on Friday 4th November with students from the Young Conservatorium Wind Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra and the Loreto College Symphonic Band. Mr Michael Jones, Director of Music

As I write this column it is hard to believe that it is the first week back after a vacation and we are on the ‘run home’ to Christmas. With only eight weeks in this term, there is no doubt that it is still a busy term ahead for Villanova sport. We still have three rounds remaining for basketball and tennis and the annual AIC Track and Field Championships will be held in Week 4 of this term. Our swim program officially begins this week. Water polo commences next week and the Provence Cup competition for our U16 and U17 volleyball teams has already begun.

The AIC Track and Field Championships will commence on Tuesday 25th and Wednesday 26th October which is during Week 4 of this term. I encourage all squad members to keep up the efforts at training and I wish all athletes the very best as we prepare for our second meet held this Thursday at UQ.

Villa’s ‘Emerging Cricket Talent Squad’ resumes their cricket training program this week and by all reports our coaches are very happy with the initial commitment and attitude shown by all players.

During Week 5 of this term we will commence all cricket and volleyball trials in the hope to get all teams selected before we break for Christmas. After the trial week we have organised a number of internal trial games to further assist with team selections. Please see below for important dates.

As always we encourage all students to get involved and to enjoy the experience.

This weekend we face St Edmund’s College in Round 5 of AIC basketball and tennis. The points for the basketball aggregate is very close. All teams must produce their very best each week, each win is important, each loss can be the difference. We should play each week with no regrets knowing we gave it our all, best wishes boys, let’s go for it!

AIC AFL to be introduced in 2017 (for Year 5 and 6 only)

In Term 1 2017, AFL will be offered to boys in Year 5 and 6. This provides our Junior School boys with the option to choose either cricket or AFL. Only two teams for each year level will be entered into the AFL competition with 15 students in each team. 12 players will take the field with three substitutions. This is a fantastic opportunity for our Junior School boys and we look forward to seeing Villa dominate in the first AIC AFL competition which will be played on Saturday mornings throughout Term 1.

2017 Villanova Cricket, AFL (Year 5 and 6) and Volleyball Sign On and Trials

All students from Year 5 - 12 who are interested in representing Villa in AIC cricket, AFL (Year 5 and 6 only) and volleyball (Year7 - 12 only) in 2017 must complete an ‘AIC Sport Sign On Form’. These forms will be available to all students from Year 5 - 11 next week through their Pastoral classes.

Please note:

• All students from Years 5 - 12 will play in the AIC Sport Competition

• All cricket, AFL and volleyball teams will be selected in year levels in 2017 not in age groups. Therefore, boys in Year 8 will play in the 8 A - D teams (not the 13 A - D teams)

• Students must attend all trials as listed below

• Cricket is open to all students from Years 5 – 12

• AFL is open to students in Year 5 and 6 (2017) only

• Volleyball is open to students in Years 7 - 12 (2017) only

Date Claimers

• AFL and cricket trials for students entering Year 6 in 2017 will take place during school hours on Friday afternoons throughout Term 4

• Trials for Years 7 – 12 (2017) will commence the week beginning Monday 31st October (Week 5)

• A complete schedule will be published in next week’s newsletter

• Volleyball trial matches v SLC will be played on 19th November

• All specific times and venues TBA

AIC Basketball

Round 5 of basketball kicks off this Saturday 8th October against St Edmund’s College. Currently Villanova is winning the overall aggregate, but it is extremely tight. We strongly encourage all boys to dig deep and play hard.

Please note that all game times have been pushed forward by 15 minutes to allow for extra travel time for both schools. Please ensure you allow for extra time to travel to and from Ipswich. A reminder that a breakfast will be held for all squad members tomorrow, 7th October (Week 1, Term 4) at the Villanova College Pool (not Langlands Pool). This breakfast will replace the training session scheduled for that day and all squad members are invited to join, including students entering the College in Year 5 and Year 7 in 2017. This is simply a meet and greet breakfast and all coaches and managers will attend. The breakfast will commence at 7.00am.

All students who are interested need to complete a swimming rego/payment form which is available from the Sports Office and is posted on the College website. We encourage as many boys as possible to participate. Well done to all of the boys who have already commenced training this week. Our success in 2017 is dependent upon the work put in this year!

AIC Tennis

Round 5 of tennis commences this Saturday 8th October against St Edmund’s College. Please note that our Year 5 and Year 6 students will be having a bye this week.

Year 7 and Year 8 teams will be playing at home and our Year 9 to Open teams will be playing out at Ipswich. Ben Mowen and Andrew Slack Squads

Both the ‘Andrew Slack’ and ‘Ben Mowen’ rugby squads will commence their pre-season strength and conditioning program next week as per the times outlined in the information package. The boys and coaches are all keen and eager to further develop themselves. I believe the hard work put in now will pay dividends later in the regular season. This is a great opportunity for all squad members, we encourage all boys to take up the challenge and push themselves to achieve greatness throughout the season.

AIC Golf Championship

The annual AIC Golf Championship will be contested on Monday 31st October at the Indooroopilly Golf Course. We are currently seeking nominations from any student in Years 7 - 12 who have a club handicap. Each College must submit a team of five players who will be escorted by one staff member on the day of competition. Transport to and from the venue will be arranged by the College. All interested students are asked to see Mr Stariha to register. The final team will be selected based on handicaps.

AIC Water Polo

AIC Water Polo will commence next week. Buses will be provided to and from each of the three games. Students who are catching the bus back to Villa at the conclusion of the games can be collected from the front entrance of the school (Sixth Ave) from 6.15pm. AFAS DONATIONS

Thank you to the following families who have generously contributed to funding the work of AFAS ELDERS on Kinatarcan Island in the Philippines: Houlihan, Chandler, Ryan, Wegert, Luck and Donegan families; your kind donation will make possible the construction of a drying hut to process local produce and so provide a sustainable source of income for the people who live on the island.

Mrs Trish McGrath, AFAS Elders

CHURCH REBUILT BY AUGUSTINIANS INTERNATIONALWhen Villanova staff member Mr Tony Hindmarsh visited Kinatarcan Island in the northern part of the Central Philippines in late 2013 he took a picture of the Augustinian church on the island. The state of the church was the result of Typhoon Haiyan which struck the island with winds well over 250 k/h winds.

Since that time the church has been able to be repaired because of finance supplied by the Augustinians internationally. In addition, the Augustinians in the Philippines have worked to assist the island’s population to rebuild their houses and to establish a more reliable means of livelihood.

The Villanova community is supporting nine of its adult members (past students, staff and parents) to make a contribution to the advancement of incomes of the whole island population. Nine AFAS Elders will spend six days as workers constructing a new ‘drying house’ for the moringa crop which is being promoted on Kinatarcan.

The AFAS Elders will finance their own transport, accommodation and food costs during their experience. To buy the materials required, transport them to Kinatarcan and meet all construction costs, our AFAS Elders require $7500. On page 8 of the newsletter is a copy of the costing of all materials that are required to complete the AFAS Elders project-Hot House this November/December.Financial contributions can be made at:
