CHECK OUT OUR ANNUAL HOLIDAY GUIDE - PAGES 45 - 53
please see the NEW Patient OFFER on pg. 5
For some strange reason, it seems relatively easy for our society to forget about Jesus. It makes no sense, but it appears to be true. When you consider the Merry Xmas references and the subtle change from Christmas Holiday to The Holiday Sea-son, maybe the forgetfulness is on purpose. C-h-r-i-s-t, 6 letters replaced with 1 X. It took 1 stripe to cleanse the world of sin, and now that world dismisses 5 letters and a flawless life for expedience?
We should celebrate the Savior, not tolerate Him. Christians should get back to the house of God. I know there are hypo-crites in church, but they are at work too, but the people boy-cotting church still go to work. Oh, it’s that money thing, well it ought to be that Jesus thing. After all, He provided the job, the skill to do the job and the blessing the income provides. And oh yeah, He also provided the power of His forgiveness, an avail-able tool for each Believer. Through forgiveness, the hypocrites can be forgiven.
The church should celebrate Jesus more than on December 25th, but throughout the entire year. Remember, He is coming back! And He does want us to be ready for His return. One of the best ways to prepare for Christ’s return is to think about how our actions correspond to His word. For example, when we walk in pretense, truth is denied its power to liberate. In other words, a Christian by confession should look like Jesus in reflection. His perfection is given to us, therefore our righ-teousness is not in play. His love is extended to us, therefore, our doing it just right does not count. Until we get free from the shackles of religious teaching, we will not be able to truly celebrate.
Our celebration of Jesus’ greatness should actually come easy in the light of His accomplishments. As the Lion of the Tribe of Judah, we are protected from all enemies. As the Lamb of God, our sins are forgiven. As the Wonderful-Counselor, we marvel at His works and benefit from His wisdom. As the Prince of Peace, our lives can finally settle down despite the opposition. How could we possibly forget Jesus when He is all of that? The answer is quite simple. We get so distracted by the issues we think about, that we forget that He is the answer to our problems.
Celebrating Jesus should be easy! He loves our soul, took our punishment, liberated us from Satan who hates us and left us in charge of the decision whether to accept or reject His sac-rifice. This is why praise should be easy, not because the music is good, but because He is good. This is why worship should be normal to ALL Christians, because our older Brother laid down His perfect life for imperfect us. The ease with which we give thanks, honor and pay homage to Him, should be so strong that the “X’s” which replaced His name at Christmas, now “X” out the desires we have that displease Him.
It’s easy to celebrate Jesus when we simply think, which leads me to believe some of us just don’t think, right. What-ever we think about most, grows. If Christ is not thought about often, something else is growing in us. If we want 2013 to be better than 2012, we will have to change what we think about. One way to accomplish this is to pray in the Spirit for one hour
a day. Find the gaps in your day and pray. Pray on your way to or from work. Pray first thing in the morning, or at lunch. This level of intimacy will increase our interest in the things that please Him. Consistently reading the Word has a similar effect. Either way, let’s think, pray and celebrate our Lord and Savior. Let’s think about Him more today that we did yesterday, and progressively each day until He dominates our thinking. Once Jesus occupies the highest place, our lives will change, our life will improve and our Celebration will be without end! This Christmas, let’s Celebrate Jesus! See you at church!

Professional Pool Players Own and Operate Stix Bar & Grill in Villa Rica
did you know that three of the top 10 women’s bil-liards players in the world live in Villa rica? That’s right, professional pool players Monica Webb (top left), Helena Thornfeldt (top middle) and Line Kjorsvik (top right) from Norway can be found in Villa Rica running their 6,000-square-foot Stix Bar & Grill, when they are not traveling the world playing in the Women’s Professional Billiard Association’s Classic Tour. You have probably seen them on ESPN competing to bring national and world titles to Georgia.
Villa Rica native and Lithia Springs High School graduate Monica Webb and Sweden native Helena Thornfeldt dreamed for many years of combining their passion for pool with a place where every-one from all walks of life could hang out in a safe, relaxed and com-fortable atmosphere. In early 2008, Webb and Thornfeldt began looking for the right space for their dream business project. They began to purchase TVs, kitchen and bar equipment and gather the sports memorabilia collected by them over the years of their career. They bought booths, stools and anything else they could find to keep their project within budget. “It was really tedious,” said Webb, “But it was the best way to get good prices on equipment and furni-ture, and we saved a ton of money.”
As stars on the Women’s Professional Billiard Association’s Clas-sic Tour, Webb and Thornfeldt had visited more than their fair share of billiard clubs across the country. They knew what they liked, and what they didn’t. They saw successful clubs, and they saw clubs that were not operated or managed very well.
“Whenever we were in another room, we talked to the owners,” said Webb, the WPBA’s #1 ranked player at the time. “We asked a lot of questions about overhead and keeping costs down. We got tours, walked their kitchens, checked out their bars, studied the lay-
outs and took lots of notes. We called everyone we knew for advice. We didn’t want to make any mistakes.”
Stix opened in 2009 and it features ten Diamond Professional ta-bles. Bar counters interwoven in the playing area were custom built to match the pool tables. Not surprisingly, Webb and Thornfeldt run APA leagues on the billiards side of STIX as well as a restaurant and sports bar haven with large TVs everywhere.
Pool is only part of the package at Stix. The custom bar seats 35 and has 15 taps, and the room boasts 13 flat screen TVs, as well as a large projection TV. Stix also offers live music on week-ends. The room is decorated with numerous pool artist Linda Pault’s RT9 paintings, as well as blown-up pool photos. Stix also features a 900-square-foot kitchen complete with a pizza oven. Thornfeldt oversees the kitchen, which serves an array of menu items with weekly specials from her own personal recipe book which reflects her culinary training back home in Sweden.
“The business and keeping up with our ranking here in America and tours world-wide can be exhausting, so we brought in Line Kjorsvik to focus on giving pool lessons and help to continue to build interest in our APA leagues and pool in general within our com-munity. She has been a huge help with that and it’s great for me to train with someone with her experience and a degree in Sports Psy-chology. I need all the help with the mental stuff I can get!” laughs Monica.
When all was said and done, this combination equaled a suc-cess awarding them the third best new poolroom in the world by Bil-liards Digest Magazine. It proudly sits in our area of West Georgia.
“If you get into what you know and love, it’s hard to go wrong,” concluded Thornfeldt.

Ladies of Life on the Word Church
RESTAURANT REVIEWBy Sheila Massey, Ladies of Life on the Word Church
The Ladies of Life on the Word Church hold their monthly meet-ings at one of the local restaurants in the Carroll-ton, Villa Rica and even in Douglasville areas. Our meetings are held the first Thursday of each month. We want to give a review of the restau-
rant we visited along with the topic we discussed that night. On Thursday, October 4th at 7 o’clock we met at The Olive Tree Restaurant in Villa Rica. We met the greeter who was very pleasant, that seated us at table suitable for our party. As everyone arrived we looked over the menu that was moderately priced. We each gave our order for tea or water to the very pleasant waitress. She brought our drinks, rolls and salad then took our food orders. We prayed before we ate the salad and rolls. Everyone enjoyed the rolls. They were fresh and well seasoned with garlic butter. The salad came in large bowls - one with the house dressing and the other with a house made ranch dressing. They both were very good. The meals of pasta, lasagna and manicotti arrived. Everyone enjoyed their meals as we discussed the importance of forgiveness.
Each one gave their views of the importance to forgive, giving examples from the scriptures. We discussed that if we walk in the love of God, when someone does something to us to hurt us, God takes that offense personally. We are to pray for that person that God will help that individual realize how much they hurt us and ask God to help us forgive. We discussed that if this is a repeated of-fense by the same individual, then we can still forgive, we don’t have to put our self in that place to be hurt again by continuing to associate with them.
We had a very pleasant evening as we had serious moments and fun moments. We did a lot of laughing and had a good time. Follow the Life on the Word Church Ladies as we decide were we will meet next month.
The Olive Tree Restaurant is located at 150 Stone Street. For more information, you may call 770.456.6456 or visit www.theolive-
treerestaurants.com.

YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION FOR 2013 - FIND YOURSELF A TRAVEL AGENT
Planning a trip today can be confusing and time consuming. A travel agent not only arranges the various modes
of transportation, but a travel agent also may be able to save you
money with early booking discounts, special fares, hotel deals and
travel advisories. And they can save you time. Instead of spending
your own valuable time researching for hours on the computer, let
your agent do the search for you.
With today’s technology there is so much information at hand for the consumer it can be very confusing. A
professional travel agent can be your personal shopper. Travel
agents can arrange all types of domestic and international
travel, from hotel and resort accommodations to air and ground
transportation, including car rental needs and tour packages. They
can provide assistance with travel insurance protection, passport
and visa applications, other foreign travel requirements.
Travel agents want to establish a long-term relationship with their customer to determine the best fit
for the vacation for their lifestyle, interests and also budget. The
‘cheapest’ is not always the best. You want to have the best value
for your money. Through an on-going and time-consuming process
of familiarization, continuing education and customer feedback,
a good agent becomes a travel expert. They are knowledgeable
about the destinations and can add to your vacation experience
and lessen your headaches and ‘travel surprises’. A travel agent
can advise you on the best times to travel, the best activities and
excursions to experience at your destination, the best destinations
for family travel, or for that romantic adult getaway.
another benefit of using a travel agent is that they “have your back”. If you book on your own, or from one of the
many on-line booking possibilities, you are truly on your own. But, if
you book with a travel agent you have someone who can help you
with any problems that may arise while you’re traveling. They will be
an advocate for you with the travel suppliers, hotels, etc.
How do you find a good travel agent? Choose one like you would a doctor or lawyer. Get
advice from friends and relatives who use an agent they trust. Since
travel choices are personal decisions that reflect individual desires
and lifestyles, you will want to visit or call several travel agencies to
find the one that best suits your needs. Consider everything from
the appearance of the office to the travel agent’s willingness to listen
and answer questions. The best agents want to establish a long-
term relationship with a client, not just make one sale.

Six Steps to Surviving Holiday Weight Gain
By Leslie Austin. Leslie has been in the fitness
industry for 16 years as a Personal Trainer and
Fitness Instructor. She is currently employed with
Gold’s Gym in Douglasville. You can reach her at
How can you try to maintain your weight and heart-health during such a tempting time? Here are six tips to surviving the holiday hoop-la this season and seasons to come.1. Get moving
One of the most effective ways to maintain or lose body weight is to engage in regular, sustained exercise. To burn off those extra calories, kick up your exercise. If you exercise for 30 minutes a day, increase it to 45 minutes. If you exercise three times a week, move it up to five times a week.2. aim for seven-a-day
Making sure you eat seven or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day is a great way to help fill-up your stomach but not your calorie level. When compared to other snack foods like chips, crackers and cookies, gram for gram, fruits and vegetables contain fewer calories and tons more nutrients. 3. Control the risk for temptation
Controlling even the slightest chance of coming in contact with ‘tempting’ foods is one way to effectively reduce your intake. While you won’t be able to control all situations, focus on the many ones you can. For example, do you keep candy or cookies at your desk or workspace? Do you frequent the dining room table or pantry where you store all your holiday goodies? Make a mental note of tempting places and try to control them. 4. Limit to one-a-day
While you can’t control every situation, you can control how much food goes into your mouth. If you are constantly bombarded with holiday parties and displays of desserts or candies you can still effectively help prevent overeating and weight gain. One way is the one-a-day method. Allow yourself one small serving of a cookie or piece of candy each day during the holiday season. Remember that you may have to compensate for it later in the day by reducing your total caloric intake or by burning a few extra calories. 5. always plan ahead – never go to a party hungry
Before you go to a holiday party, eat a healthy snack such as a serving of your favorite fruit, fat-free yogurt or a low-fat, whole grain granola bar. When you arrive at the party, you won’t be craving hors d’oeuvres.6. say no politely
Many times you feel forced to eat foods because people keep putting it in front of you. Learn to say no politely, such as “No thank you, I’ve had enough. Everything was delicious” or “I couldn’t eat another bite. Everything tasted wonderful”.
Personal Trainers CornerDoes Your Hair Need an Intervention?By Audrey Davis-Sivasothy, www.haircarerehab.comFour-step rehab for damaged hair:
1. Chelating your hair: The first step in detoxing hair is the use of chelating shampoo, which is typically clear and lifts stubborn buildup from products and hard water.
2. deep conditioning your hair: After chelating, deep condition. This should be done every seven to 10 days using moisturizing conditioners such as instant and cream-rinse, deep conditioners, protein treatments or leave-in conditioners.
3. Moisturizing your hair: This step adds a layer of leave-on protection. You can use either leave-in conditioner or a dedicated moisturizing product, or both. For thick, dry or curly hair, this step hydrates and adds “slip.” For fine or oily hair, these products should detangle strands while encouraging volume.
4. sealing your hair: This is the last major step in your hair intervention. Sealing with an oil or butter product locks in moisture and solidifies the gains of rehab. It smoothes out the cuticle and keeps hair moisturized for a longer period. Always use sealant on slightly dampened or misted hair.

Photography Tip of the Month
Christmas. The actual Christmas meal or party is ob-viously the best part of the day, but there are other photographic opportunities, particularly in the prep-
arations stages of the day. Those include: food preparation, put-ting up decorations, wrapping gifts, kids throwing a tantrum while getting dressed in their Christmas outfits, setting the table. The shots before the event starts are often great because they show everything at its best before all of the hustle and bustle of the day begins.
Paulding Photography ClubThe Paulding Photography Club meets the second and fourth
Thursdays of each month at 7pm at 122 Main Street in Dallas. Meetings are open to all with an interest in photography – visitors are always welcome. Membership is required to participate in the monthly competition and critique. Their first meeting of each month is a technical or educational program presented by a member of the photographic or art community and competitions are held the at the second meeting of each month. with families, are doing extra shopping, cooking and school activities, navigating a much more packed schedule than usual.
it has been my observation through my years working in
long-term care that one important thing residents miss is
being “busy”. Think about it. When you are busy, it means you have lots to do and if there is a lot to do, then you must be an important part of something. What if you had nothing to do? What if you were physi-cally unable to do so much as sweep a floor? Would you feel needed or important?
This is what residents in a care setting go through every
day. Residents look back over their lives and remember the days when they, too were busy and hectic and had meals to cook or a job to go to every day and children to raise at home. They were an essential part of their community, their churches, and their civic organizations. They had stuff to do!
in a nursing facility, often the focus of the activity de-
partment is on providing entertainment for residents, and that is a fine idea in general. However, most residents spent their entire lives working, with formal entertainment as a minor bonus. What the elderly need is to feel important, needed. Families can do this by including the elderly in plans for the future, giving them small tasks to do, such as compiling a Christmas card list or a shopping list. Ask for recipes or cooking advice. Have children and grandchildren call them on the phone or visit to ask for advice about school or friendships.
another way to make the elderly feel important and need-
ed is to build time into your schedule to visit. You can take the elderly person out for a meal or just a ride through the country to see the sights. Have them point out landmarks and relay how the landscape has changed through the years. Have schoolchildren interview them for a project, either for a real grade or just for fun. Also, send mail. Mail is a small, inexpensive way to brighten a day and to make someone feel remembered and important. You can check with the Activities De-partment and see what projects may be coming up that you might could volunteer a little time or materials to help with. If you have any musical talent, our residents would love to hear it and it would thrill your loved one as well because they get to “show you off”.
you and your offspring are the fruit of their labors. Seeing you happy and busy and successful means that they were successful in their lives, so remember to thank them and tell them how much you still need their help and guidance. It will make your holiday and theirs much brighter.

Fitzpatrick Insurance Agency opens in Villa RicaFitzpatrick Insurance Agency, located at 1823 Carrollton Villa Rica
Highway, opened its doors for business and began serving customers
for the first time on November 1st. It may have been their first day as
Fitzpatrick Insurance, but it is not their first time serving residents of West
Georgia. Owner/agent Thom Fitzpatrick has been a licensed insurance
agent in the West Georgia area since 1988. Sales and service specialist
Janet Fitzpatrick Ray has been a licensed insurance agent since 1989.
Owner Thom Fitzpatrick describes his new agency as a local cus-
tomer oriented agency. He states, “We are a part of the community. We
live in Carroll County, worship in Carroll County, educated our children in
Carroll County. In short, our lives are in Carroll County.” He went on to say,
“We care about what happens here and want the best for our neighbors.
We have extensive knowledge of the West Georgia area having been in
the insurance industry here for over 20 years. We represent many fine
companies so that coverage can be tailored to the best fit for you, not the
insurance company. It is our pledge to always put our customers first.”
Fitzpatrick Insurance offers an extensive line of auto and home insur-
ance through several companies. They have policies for most car types
and driving records. Other services include personal umbrella policies,

5 Ways to Save Money This Christmas1. Make a list, and narrow it down. Who do you have to buy presents
for? Make a list, because without it you will have a hard time creating a
budget. Only put the essential people on it. Now see if you can narrow it
down a bit.
2. Set a budget, and stick to it. How much can you afford to spend
on Christmas this year, realistically? Don’t put your Christmas shopping
on your credit card if possible - just spend what you can find within your
regular budget or in savings (though it’s not a good idea to deplete your
savings just for gifts).
3. Do an exchange. This can drastically reduce costs, especially if
you have a large family or group of friends or coworkers. Instead of buy-
ing something for everyone, you just have to buy one gift.
4. Make your own gifts. You could make anything — picture frames,
knitted scarves, a digital photo slideshow, a bookshelf, anything you can
learn to make.
5. Just buy for kids. Christmas gifts are really the most fun for kids.
While adults love getting gifts, of course, it’s not as important to them.
Instead, just buy gifts for the kids on your list. The adults will get over it, or
better yet, be happy they don’t have to find room for the stuff they prob-
ably never wanted in the first place.
Help Older Parents Avoid Financial “Scams”Here’s a disturbing statistic: One out of every five Americans over the
age of 65 has been victimized by a financial scheme, according to the
Investor Protection Trust, a nonprofit organization devoted to investor ed-
ucation. If your parents are in this age group, should you be concerned?
And can you help them avoid being “scammed” so that they maintain
control over their finances?
The answer to the first question is “yes” — you should be concerned.
Of course, as the numbers above show, most aging Americans are not
being swindled, which suggests they can take of themselves quite well.
Still, it’s no secret that many fraud schemes target seniors because of
their concentrated wealth and in many cases, trusting nature. And as
much as you’d like to think otherwise, your parents could be susceptible
to rip-off artists.
Fortunately, in regard to the second question above, you can indeed
take steps to help prevent your parents from being fleeced. Here are a
few suggestions:
• Observe their behavior. If you live close to your parents, listen
closely to any new friends, investment deals or sweepstakes they men-
tion during your normal interactions. If you’re in a different city, try to stay
abreast of your parents’ behavior by communicating with them frequently
and by checking in with other family members or friends who have occa-
sion to see your parents.
• Urge them to watch out for suspicious e-mails. You’ve probably
seen them — the e-mails offering to “reward” you with huge amounts of
money if you will only contact such-and-such from a distant country and
then put up a “small” sum to initiate some ill-defined transaction. You
probably “spam” these without a moment’s thought — and you should
urge your parents to do the same. Remind them that any offer that sounds
“too good to be true” is, without question, neither “good” nor “true.”
• Encourage them to further their financial education. Law enforce-
ment agencies, health care professionals and reputable financial servic-
es providers all offer personal financial management programs designed
specifically for seniors. Look for these types of programs in your area,
encourage your parents to attend — and even consider going with them.
• Become familiar with their financial situation. Having a serious
discussion with your parents about their finances may not be easy — but
it’s important. The more you know about their investments, retirement ac-
counts and estate plans, the better prepared you’ll be to respond help-
fully if they mention an action they’re considering taking that, to you, just
doesn’t sound appropriate.
• Suggest professional help. If your parents are already working with
a qualified financial professional, they’re probably less likely to be victim-
ized by fraud than if they were managing their finances on their own. And
it’s a good idea for you to know their financial advisor, and for him or her
to know you, as you may well be involved in your parents’ legacy plan-
ning. But if your parents don’t already have a financial advisor, you may
want to recommend one to them, particularly if it’s someone you already
know and trust.
It’s entirely possible that your parents won’t need any assistance in
avoiding financial scams. But, just in case, be prepared to act on the
above suggestions. Your intervention could help preserve your parent’s
financial independence.

God’s Goodness“Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good;
his love endures forever.” Psalm 107:1 (NIV)
As we near the holiday season, we need
to take time to remember that we celebrate
Christmas because of God’s goodness. He
sent his son so that we could experience
His love forever. That is truly a reason to be
thankful this Christmas. One way we can manifest the love of God to others
is with random acts of kindness.
My daughter received a random act of kindness the other day at the
airport. She was flying to Dallas to be a part of her best friend’s engage-
ment. She arrived at the airport thinking she was an hour early only to find
out she looked at her return time instead of her departure time. Oops! She
had missed her flight by ten minutes. As she realized her error her mouth
dropped open and her stomach hit the floor. The agent at the counter must
have realized her shock and distress and booked her on the next flight. The
agent was kind and helpful. The best part is she is from Villa Rica! Her ran-
dom act of kindness was a blessing to me. The Christmas season is a great
time to shine the light of Christ through random acts of kindness! Wishing
you a blessed Christmas. Remember to be a blessing to someone as well.
~Missy

Keep Your Eyes on the TargetOur youngest grandsons decided to race. An-
thony, the youngest, issued a challenge to Timo-
thy and then took off, giving himself a large head
start in the footrace. They were racing to see who
could touch the fence first and be today’s Fastest
Grandkid. Anthony was rapidly closing in on the
win, sure victory in his grasp, thanks to his blaz-
ing speed and an insurmountable head start. Then he took his eyes off
the fence and turned to see where Timothy was. He ran right into the
fence, still winning but coming pretty close to getting hurt. He escaped
with no injuries and a win, but wearing a smile that said he was happier
about surviving than he was winning. His sheepish grin also looked a
little embarrassed since his slam bang finish was witnessed by several
folks. Unhindered, he ran off to face the next great challenge, hopefully
having learned to keep his eyes on the target.
This month we will engage in some challenges and we could learn
a few things from Anthony. Too many times we lose the race for great
relationships or stronger financial health. The Bible teaches that God
wants us to win and has given us the equipment to do so. Here are
some lessons we can take away from Anthony’s race:
Get a head start. Anthony didn’t wait on Timothy to line up evenly; he
said go and took off. We have an adversary: the devil and the forces of
darkness. Don’t play fair with them-take every advantage Jesus gives
us. Pray. Read the Bible. Surround yourself with godly connections
who can cheer you on. Embrace the work of God’s
Spirit in your life. He will keep you out front with an
insurmountable lead if we simply practice hearing and
obeying His voice.
Next, run hard. Anthony didn’t lollygag around-he gave
it everything he had. One of the reasons we don’t win some
of our contests is because we simply quit trying. We start
strong but finish weak. The distractions of everyday life,
the setbacks, or just a loss of interest derail us from vic-
tory. Just as there is a grace to start, there is a grace to
finish. Give it all you’ve got. My Dad always said, “If it’s
worth doing, it’s worth doing right.”
The last thing we can learn is to keep your eyes on
the target. He was doing well until he turned his attention
from his goal to check out his opposition. Don’t let the ob-
stacles you face become the focus of your attention. The
writer of the book of Hebrews tells us that God has given us
the victory. He then tells us that sometimes it doesn’t look like we’re
winning-that we don’t yet see it. But “we do see Jesus.” He has faced
every test without failing and leads us to victory. Keep your eyes on Him
no matter what’s going on around you. He will get you to the finish line
without running into the fence!Article sponsored by LifeGate Church Mirror Lake, 501 Permian Way.

ViLLa riCa WiLdCaTsFinal thoughts on the 2012 season from Villa Rica Head Coach Mike Falleur
We knew going into the 2012 football season that there would be many challenges. The fact that our senior and junior classes were small in numbers meant that a lot of younger players were going to have to step up and play on Fridays with very little Varsity experience. Another of these challenges started with scrimmages. Injuries are a part of football, but it’s even worse when your depth is so thin and forces those young players to have to play all the time. I am proud of our football team. They were very competitive and fought hard in every football game. Had we been able to make a couple of key plays in the Hiram and Rome games, this young football team would have made it to the playoffs.
As we look toward the 2013 football season I see a team that has great potential, one that should be in the hunt for a region title and a state play-off berth. Our job as coaches is to make sure these players are working hard in the classroom as well as in the weight room and preparing themselves for next year. It will be here before you know it. Let’s get ready for a great year of Wildcat Football in 2013!

During these next couple of weeks everyone, including your four-
legged friends, are going to be busy. Your little Santas will be sniff-
ing presents, chasing ornaments and trying to get those left overs.
Remember, if they can get to something you need to move it. There
will be so many smells to smell, and so many people to greet, so
keep their anxiety under control with love, comfort and their own
private space. Remind Santa to only give pet safe toys and treats.
Don’t be tempted to share any leftovers with them because this is
extremely dangerous. Possible complications include skin allergies
to choking and even death. Instead, give them their own treats.
Keep your four-legged family members safe and happy throughout
the holidays.

The Family ConnectionHome for the Holidays
By Kerry Patuka, a degreed and certified educa-tor, licensed minister and founder of Drive 5 Minis-tries, a ministry for churches and children’s ministry. [email protected]
When my husband and I were first married, go-ing “home for the holidays” meant packing up and heading back to Pennsylvania. Fam-
ily, friends, food, holiday traditions and the promise of snow called
us there. The memories of Christmases past and the anticipation
of new memories that would be made filled me with holiday hap-
piness. This continued through the first few years of our son’s life.
Sharing these things we knew and loved with him were wonderful.
As he got a little older, “home for the holidays” started to mean some-
thing different to us. It was time to start some new traditions with him at
our home, some of which were reminiscent of traditions from when
we were kids. A couple times, we went home to Pennsylvania the
week after Christmas and then for several years, we made Thanks-
giving the holiday we traveled up north to celebrate. This was the
best of both worlds for a while. We still went home for a holiday and
had holiday traditions here in Georgia too.
Over the next few years, as our son grew, his involvement in Scouts
and sports, as well as his homeschooling, took up more time and
required a deeper commitment on our part. It became more and
more difficult to carve out time to make the long drive to Pennsylva-
nia for Thanksgiving. Flying there and renting a car were stressful
and expensive. (It is the “most traveled” holiday.) So “home for the
holidays” now meant that we would be staying at our home for the
whole holiday season.
Being at our own home didn’t have that same nostalgic ring that pulls at
the heartstrings, but we slowly developed more and more of our own
traditions – things that I look forward to each Thanksgiving, Christ-
mas and New Year. Some are little, silly things. Others are more
meaningful. Sometimes it’s more the attitude and the atmosphere,
than it is an action.
These transitions over the years weren’t always easy. My husband and
I didn’t always agree and compromises had to be made. There were
things we missed. Sometimes things simply didn’t live up to our ex-
pectations and we were disappointed. Just as I have to rely on God
through all of life’s changes, I need to look to Him for guidance and
peace as our “home for the holidays” concept evolves…and we’re
not done yet.
As I think ahead to our son’s teenage years, I want our home and
family to be a place where he wants to be “home for the holidays”. I
want the things we do, to draw from our past, build on the traditions
we’ve developed as a family and also incorporate things that are
important to him.
I ask God to help me remember and cherish the traditions and the holi-
days of the past. I rest in His presence so I can relax, embrace and
enjoy the moments of each holiday season as they happen. I pray
He will prepare my heart and mind for the transitions that will occur,
as our “home for the holidays” concept continues to change.

Wedding Planning During the HolidaysBy Beverly Clements, The Centre at Arbor Connection, 678.213.3195,
www.thearborconnection.com
I have read many articles about brides that are planning their weddings
during the holiday season. Finding a theme or color scheme is easy. You can also save money on decorations since most locations are already decorated for the season.
But, let’s talk about those brides that are getting married in January,
February, and March. If you are one of those brides, you are probably already dreading this holiday season. You are wondering how to juggle everything. Let’s start with some planning and organizing tips.
1. Buy a calendar! I know you have a calendar app on your phone, you can use it too, but you need a calendar that will allow you to see all of the events in front of you at one time.
2. Make a list of your entire wedding to do’s.3. Make a list of all of your family holiday gatherings. Don’t forget
your fiancé’s family.4. Make a list of your work events.
5. Make a list of your church and social events (holiday parties, special services, volunteering, and etc).
For the events that you have dates and times for, go ahead and put those in your calendar. If you have a set work schedule, put that in your calendar too.
The next item to go into your calendar is a date night. This is one night a week that is just about you and your fiancé. This will help keep your relationship in focus when things start to get hectic.
Now it is time to start inserting the wedding planning items in to your cal-
endar. Look at your checklist - what needs to be done first? Have you booked all of your vendors? Have you made your guest list? Have you printed or sent out your invitations? What are your DIY projects? Do you have vendor meetings that need to be made? Have you picked out your ceremony and reception music? Have you done your tastings for your dinner and cake?
Once you have looked at your list of to-dos, you need to prioritize them. Some items can wait until after the holidays, unless you are getting married at the beginning of 2012.
Now look at the rest of the list find the items that need to be done in the next two months. Make a schedule and give yourself goals.

dirECTory & GuidEGetting Back in Motion After a Joint Operation
By Dr. Colpini, Tanner Ortho and Spine, www.TannerOrtho.org.People who have any type of surgery may worry about getting back
into shape.
“Your surgeon can tell you what you should be able to do in the
first days, weeks and months following your operation,” said Gregory
Slappey, MD, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with Carrollton Or-
thopaedic Clinic. “However, here are some basic recommendations you
can expect for returning to your routine following knee or shoulder sur-
gery.”
Total Knee Replacement. If you’ve had your knee replaced, your
surgeon will likely recommend you start exercising as soon as you can.
The goal: to restore your mobility and strength, with a gradual return to
everyday activities and exercise.
“During your early recovery, your physical therapist may suggest you
exercise 20 to 30 minutes two or three times a day in addition to taking a
30-minute walk,” said Anthony Colpini, MD, a board-certified orthopedic
surgeon with Carrollton Orthopaedic Clinic. “You may be asked to do straight leg raises, quadriceps sets, knee-straightening exercises and bed-supported knee bends.”
Shoulder Surgery. Regular exercise following surgery can help re-store normal shoulder motion and flexibility and aid a gradual return to your everyday routine.
Your orthopedic surgeon may suggest you exercise ten to 15 min-utes two or three times a day during your recovery. Depending on the type of surgery, your doctor or therapist may recommend circular pen-dulum, shoulder flexion, supported shoulder rotation or shoulder inter-nal rotation exercises.
Dr. Colpini cautions that recovery from an orthopedic procedure is not instant and can take weeks and even months to regain strength and range of motion.
“Remember, getting back to your normal routine takes time,” he said. “Following your doctor’s orders and being patient are key steps. How-ever, with time and effort, you’ll find yourself much more able to do what you were not able to do before the procedure.”

HealthGrades: Tanner Number 1 in Georgia for Overall Orthopedic Services
For the fourth consecutive year, Tanner Ortho and Spine Center at
Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton is ranked number one in Georgia for
overall orthopedic services by HealthGrades, the leading provider of
information to help consumers make an informed decision about a phy-
sician or hospital.
The recognition is part of new findings released in American Hospi-
tal Quality Outcomes 2013: Healthgrades Report to the Nation, which
evaluates the performance of approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide
across nearly 30 procedures and conditions. A five-star quality mea-
surement indicates that Tanner Health Carrollton’s clinical performance
is better than expected.
Tanner Ortho and Spine Center has earned five-star ratings for:
• Overall orthopedic services for six years in a row (2008-2013)
• Joint replacement for five years in a row (2009-2013)
• Spine surgery for six years in a row (2008-2013)
• Total knee replacement for five years in a row (2009-2013)
• Total hip replacement for two years in a row (2012-2013)
• Hip fracture treatment for nine years in a row (2005-2013)
• Back and neck surgery six years in a row (2008-2013)
Tanner also has earned HealthGrades’ Orthopedic Surgery Excel-
lence Award for the sixth consecutive year. The 2013 performance out-
comes are now available at www.healthgrades.com.
“This is the product of the hard work that has been done by our staff
at all levels of our organization, as well as the skill and diligence of our
medical staff,” said Loy Howard, president and CEO of Tanner Health
System. “Ensuring successful outcomes is how we earn the trust of our
patients. This gives our patients the assurance that, at Tanner, they’re
going to get the best possible care.”
Tanner has been no stranger to accolades from HealthGrades.
Both Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton and Tanner Medical Center/
Villa Rica were honored with HealthGrades’ Outstanding Patient Ex-
perience Award for 2011 and 2012. HealthGrades used data from the
Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems
(HCAPS)—the first national, standardized, publicly reported survey of
patients’ perspectives of hospital care.

Tanner adopts new Policy for improved approach to Chronic Pain ManagementPatients who turn to Tanner Health System’s emergency depart-
ments for chronic pain medications will receive help—if not a pre-scription—from a new pain management policy now in place.
As rising levels of prescription drug abuse become a national problem and draw increasing concern from local law enforcement agencies, Tanner hopes the new policy will help both residents who may have an addiction to prescription pain medication and those who are living with untreated chronic pain.
“As physicians, we’re going to do everything we can to help some-one with a problem,” said Tom Fitzgerald, MD, a board-certified emergency physician with Carrollton Emergency Physicians and physician director of emergency department operations and clinical management at Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton, Tanner’s most-vis-ited emergency department. “But the emergency department is an extremely difficult place to treat problems with chronic pain because we only have the one encounter with the patient; we’re not where someone goes for a follow-up, so we can’t know if we’re simply help-ing someone with short-term pain or potentially causing harm by pro-viding access to medications to which the patient may be addicted or may even be looking to sell.”
Dr. Fitzgerald, who authored the new policy after reviewing similar policies at other medical centers, said the policy is meant to ensure that patients are receiving the help they need.
The policy addresses chronic pain medication and sedatives. Ac-cording to the policy, people who have pain that has lasted longer
than six months—as well as those who have received medication more than eight times in the past year (or more than three times in the past month), those who have not followed-up for pain management care after previously receiving treatment and referral in the emergen-cy department and those who are already in (or have been rejected from) a pain management plan—will not be eligible to receive pre-scriptions for pain medication or sedatives.
Rather, those individuals will be encouraged to follow up with a primary care provider or will receive a referral to the Tanner Pain Man-agement Center, where patients can establish a relationship with a physician who can better manage prescriptions.
“The policy provides the flexibility to treat patients who need help,” said Dr. Fitzgerald. “Those who have been injured, suffered trauma or otherwise have a valid need for pain medication or sedatives will re-ceive appropriate treatment. And those who are not eligible for these types of medications also will receive help through Tanner’s system of pain management specialists and behavioral health providers. Our patients won’t leave the hospital without somewhere to turn for help.”
The policy is in effect at each of Tanner’s three regional 24-hour emergency departments, including Tanner Medical Center/Carroll-ton, Tanner Medical Center/Villa Rica and Higgins General Hospital in Bremen.
Tanner Pain Management Center accepts appointments by physi-cian referral only. More information on the service can be found online at www.TannerPainManagement.org or by calling 770.812.5701.

Mention his name to just about any country music lover and the response will likely be, “What an awesome vocalist!” Between 1979 and 1990 John re-corded and marketed six albums on his own Clear Sky Records label. Those early discs and John Berry’s strong regional popularity attracted him attention on Music Row. Capitol Records signed him in 1992 and it was there that he had a string of hits, but it was his stunning per-formance of the title track of the 1995 CD O’ Holy Night that led to his most enduring legacy. John Berry began doing a Christmas tour in 1996 and this year will mark his 15th consecutive Christmas concert series. See ad on this page.

Helping Those In NeedVilla Rica company and people aid hurricane victims
After seeing the devastation from Hurricane Sandy and the need for supplies, local resident Cody Mayfield knew he wanted to make a
difference. He organized, largely through Facebook, what turned out to be an amazing community effort.
Cody’s father, Randy, owns a trucking company, so he was able to secure a semi-truck. A friend, Robin Baker, who has family in the area,
was able to organize the distribution of the goods through an organization in New Jersey - Compassion Services International. The group
was able to set up the truck in the Villa Rica WalMart parking lot on Wednesday, and donations came pouring in as area residents donated
supplies they purchased at the department store.
“A tractor trailer and driver were donated to this operation. Businesses called in with monetary donations or materials immediately. We
had pallets of water donated from various companies including Home Depot, pallets of dog food, six pallets of canned goods, handmade
quilts from the elderly, a group of United Methodist Church children put together hundreds of gallon bags of brand new toiletries included
with a personal note in each bag, the Wounded Warriors gave money, even a group of card players gave $500 toward fuel expenses,”
Baker said.
“We heard a need for men and women’s undergarments, put out the call and in a few hours we had tons of new packs of each,” she
continued, noting that cleaning supplies, mops, brooms, gloves, garbage bags, baby food, formula, diapers and other items were also
collected. “It is overwhelming to me the extent that our small town gave,” she said.
Eager to make their delivery quickly while the need was still the greatest, Cody, his father Randy Mayfield and friends Aubrey Merritt and
Nick Gladden drove all night from Villa Rica on Thursday, November 8th to personally deliver a semi loaded with donated food, blankets,
new clothing, and all kinds of other supplies to those whose homes and belongings were damaged by Hurricane Sandy. The truck arrived
at about noon Friday the 9th and immediately unloaded. According to Mayfield, the group stayed up for almost 48 hours straight, but it was
well worth it.
Cody wanted us to express his thanks to the people of Villa Rica and the businesses who truly made a difference in the lives of others.

Prevent Premature Aging in FurnitureDermatologists’ warnings about the risks of the sun’s dam-
aging rays seem to be getting through to most of us as we pay more attention to sun exposure and sunscreen. If our sofas and chairs could talk, you might hear them complain about being dry,
cracked and wrinkly from sitting in direct sunlight. Unfortunately, Coppertone doesn’t make sunscreen for the chaise lounge.
Now is a good time to take an inventory of your furniture – in-doors and outdoors – to see which items need a little TLC or which pieces should be moved around to minimize sun exposure. Pay-ing attention to your furniture extends its life.DOs and DON’Ts of extending furniture’s lifediscoloration and fading
DON’T use markers to treat spots or areas of discoloration. Many old wives tales state that you can use markers to repair dis-colored leather. That is NOT true. Markers cannot match the exact appearance of the leather as it is not made for this purpose, so never use a marker to quickly remove the discoloration. You will only end up creating an irregular look.
DO regularly apply leather cleaner and try to keep furniture out of direct sunlight as much as possible.drying up
DON’T ever treat your leather with olive oil, petroleum or any other type of oil. A lot of people do to try to prevent drying, but the oil you use will get soaked up just like any other oil, resulting in spots and discoloration. Olive oil and all other oils actually speed up the deterioration process for leather. As leather is porous it will absorb the oil and over time the absorbed oil will lead to discol-oration.
DO apply protection cream regularly.
