Zwan Family Charity was again chosen for a charity Fundraiser at Villa Martin Plaza in Spain. It was
a beautiful October afternoon with loads of entertainers who shared their time for charity. Thank
you to the ever amazing Stevie Spit, Casey, Jen and Roger, Jack, Eileen and Snoopy!!!! Thank you to
all the generous sponsors and the companies that donated amazing prizes! The fundraiser raised
2292euros!
Zwan Family Charity had the honor of sharing the event with a lovely woman named Tasha . Tasha
suffers from an extremely rare disease that wreaks havoc on the mitochondrial of the cells in her
body. The cells then mutate and cause her a variety of problems. Sweet Tasha is on a ventilator at
all times, she has lost sight in one eye, she is paralyzed from the waist down and she is fed through
a feeding tube. However, NONE of these ailments have caused her to lose her spirit.
Tasha and her family found a doctor in the US who does work with mitochondrial conditions. Now
Tasha and her family are fundraising to collect 250,000euros in order to get Tasha to New York for
treatment that can extend her life and make her comfortable.
If you are interested in supporting Tasha’s cause, please go to any of the following sites and make a
donation:

Little Omar is 2 years old and suffers from Thalassemia. He has been accepted by Zwan Family Charity
and must come to our clinic for monthly visits. His blood work is run, his medicine adjusted, and a
blood component called “packed red blood cells” is transfused.
Omar’s blood type is AB+. This type is difficult to find, but Zwan Family Charity put out an appeal and
man located in Bagram answered that call. His name is Curtis. Curtis works for AMK9 (www.amk9.com).
Once Curtis offered, AMK9 did not hesitate to assist in his donation They immediately made arrange-
ments to cover Curtis’s shifts, put him in a helicopter, and flew him into Kabul. When Curtis arrived in
Kabul a charity team was there to collect a unit of his blood. Curtis was asked if he had donated blood
in the past. He replied “No, but I have never had to save a life before!” He was truly the most enthusias-
tic blood donor anyone had ever met!
The blood was handed over to our ever-industrious Dr. Shoaib, who received assistance from a 400-bed
military hospital in reducing the whole blood into life-saving red blood cells.
Omar arrived and the transfusion began; the process went flawlessly.
Zwan Family Charity can only thank the big hearts of those involved. Everyone jumped right in and did
what was needed without hesitation. One of the coolest operations of which Zwan Family Charity has
ever been a part!
To The Rescue For Little Omar!
We have started raising money to fund Omar’s bone marrow
transplant. If you can contribute, please visit his GoFundMe page:

Aisha and her Mom
While vaccinating the children at Shamsa Village Orphanage, we met sweet
baby Aisha. She is about 6 months old. Soon we met her mother who is
about 15 years old and also an orphan. Due to unfortunate family
circumstances, Aisha’s Father left the family. Aisha’s Mother was alone,
young and had nowhere to turn, but she found she was eligible to be in an
orphanage.
Jen & Kim immediately felt a great kinship with mother and daughter, so
they set out to make things a bit easier for them. Jen donated a huge bag of
diapers and a small baby hamper. Kim donated baby wipes, lotion and pow-
der. Helen Ridge’s donation of clothes was full of little girls’ clothes and we
were able to pack up a bunch of these items.
The items were presented to Aisha’s
Mother who smiled huge and hugged eve-
ryone tightly! Such a sweet young woman!
Zwan Family Charity hopes to be able to
continue to aid with the needs of baby
Aisha and her Mother.

Bassina is an aplastic anemia patient who is
maintaining very well. Her Mother and Father
continue to impress us with their dedication.
We hope that Bassina will never need a bone
marrow transplant as some children have Apl-
satic Amenia that resolves on its own.
In order to be able to taper her medication
properly, we require her immunosuppressant
medication to be in syrup form. This is not
available in Afghanistan so we will continue to
work on bringing it in for her.
Update on Bassina
Sweet Baby Fatima has Gained her Wings
Little Fatima was born with a hypoxic brain injury and
struggled to suckle and nourish herself. Her family
worked diligently to keep her alive and prayed for the
best. However, in the end, Little Fatima passed away
suddenly in her home with her family around her.
She is now a tiny angel that has no more struggle.
Hygiene and Sanitation Training
Zwan Family Charity continues its task of training Afghans in matters of hygiene and sanitation in an
effort to reduce the spread of disease.
The Ministry of Public Health supplies posters and handouts. Zwan Family Charity provides the in-
struction. This quarter, Zwan Family Charity has visited three more kitchens and one classroom.
37 children at PARSA were given a one hour class that con-
centrated on handwashing, nail care, and proper toileting
habits. Each child received a certificate and a bag with a
toothbrush and toothpaste donated by the PC.
Internews received a 2-hour kitchen hygiene class.
Caddell Construction received a 16-hour
kitchen hygiene class. 19 certificates were
issued. This class was especially satisfying as
it was translated in a lesser known Afghan
language called Turkman.
The first hygiene class ZFC has completed outside of Kabul. The ANHAM/
CIANO kitchen in Bagram received a 2-hour kitchen hygiene class.
Zwan Family Charity had the honor of being invited by the Sankalp Founda-
tion (www.sankalpindia.net) to ThalMeet 2017. Dr. Gran and Kim traveled to
Bangalore, India and met with coordinators of Thalassemia Centers from all
over India. The people were amazing and humble. Each attendee discussed
the successes, failures and obstacles involved in the operation of individual
centers. It was an atmosphere of encouragement and caring.
Zwan Family Charity could not help but depart with a wider view and deeper
understanding of Thalassemia management and prevention. ZFC is currently
working on a proposal to bring a Thalassemia Center to Kabul.

It is with profound pleasure that we announce Zwan Family Charity’s partnership with
the Novick Cardiac Alliance (www.cardiac-alliance.org).
Everyday we, along with other partner foundations, strive to bring quality cardiac
treatments to those in the developing world who cannot afford treatments and
surgeries.
Together, we will heal the little hearts of the future and ensure we give our cardiac
patients a healthier life and a brighter future!

Zwan Family Charity was heading to Window of Hope Orphanage for the annual
flu vaccine (full report in the next Newsletter) when it was suggested that a
couple of people from the Miraculous Love Kids (themiraculouslovekids.org)
come along.
Lanny and Mursal showed up with their acoustic guitars and started playing
some tunes. As the children received their shots, off to the garden they went to
hear the music. It wasn’t long before they were out there showing off their
dance moves!
The weather was as gorgeous as it gets in Kabul. The children were smiling and
dancing.
There are the days in life that leave an imprint in your heart. This was one of
those days. Please enjoy the pictures!
A Little Music
Zwan Family Charity has started Kim’s Micro-Scholarship Program in which
Afghan medical professionals can apply for scholarships that range from 1 to
1000 USD. The scholarships will cover workshops, continuing education and
seminars.
Kim’s Micro Scholarship Program
Abdul “Wali” is a nurse for The American University of Afghanistan. He has
always been a great help to Zwan Family Charity and Westex Medical
Services. He has always had a wonderful bedside manner. When he finds
himself struggling with English, he compensates with compassion.
Zwan Family Charity saw that Wali was a perfect choice to be a recipient of
Kim’s Micro-Scholarship. He attended an American Heart Association Basic
Life Support training class.
He passed with flying colors and now carries his certification card proudly.
Cost of this class including the book is 61USD.
Zwan Family Charity has been blessed to have some really cool supporters around Kabul!
It was early September when Q Kabul Hotel opened its Sports Lounge on a holiday evening and al-
lowed the Zwan Family Charity team to serve guests and collect tips as donations; 175USD was raised
that night! Thank you, Q!
One day, Zwan Family Charity received an email from one of our regular supporters, Mr. Johnny. He
informed us that he was planning a night of fun & games. Monies raised would be donated to Zwan
Family Charity. The night was absolutely fun, silly ,and warped - 891USD was raised! Thank you to
Mr. Johnny- and his team- for hosting this event. We hope to be included in the future!

Broselow Tapes for Afghanistan
Afghanistan is a vibrant country full of history. The people are some of the most hospitable in the world.
However, this beautiful country has now endured 40 years of war which has left it with an almost non-existent medical infrastructure.
We have personally been able to work with many doctors in Afghanistan and we are repeatedly amazed by the work they do with very few resources and limited access to quality equipment.
Zwan Family Charity is working to provide 1000 Afghan Pediatric doctors and nurses with Broselow Tapes in an effort to help bring standardized medical care to Afghanistan.
Each tape is being purchased at 20USD each. This cost along with funding fees means we must collect 22,000USD to complete this project.
We can help a healthcare professional save a child’s life with each tape purchased.

"The Brave Badria" is a wonderful book about fighting terrorism in Afghanistan. It was authored by a US Army Captain by the
name of Matt Wilson. This book addresses larger, global issues while dealing with issues children face regularly, specifically bul-
lying. The story helps children and adults alike appreciate human experience, whether in Afghanistan or the US. An excellent
book. .
