VIIRS CAL _ Val Ocean Color
January 31, 2013
Stennis Update USM, NRL, SDSU
Highlights
1 - Presentations in last 3 months 1) Fargion, G.S., et al,. “VIIRS Ocean Color Data For Coastal Management” abstract AGU-San Francisco. Dec 8 – 2012
2 - VIIRS Clouds Mask - Improvement to the Threshold 3 - Evaluate of MX6.6 - Negative radiance, Inland waters, 4- AERONET Improvements for Match up
WAVECIS – Time of day calibrate – expanded Angles Eureka - MVC0 – updated
5 - VIIRS product validation (vicarious calibration) in coastal waters (using SAVANT)SAVANT – matchup tool updated
6. Cruise Validation - 5 cruises
VIIRS Cloud MASK (VCM)
Albedo 865 0.027

3 - Confidently Cloudy
VCM 2,32- Probably Cloudy or 3- Confidently Cloudy
VCM 1,2, 30 – Confidently Clear 1- Probably clear 2- Probably Cloudy 3- Confidently Cloudy
-Evaluation of VCM on Ocean Color products - comparison with “Standard Ocean color,
Cloud Mask.” ( NASA, NAVY, NOAA) - Program review in Jan 2013 - For Color products VCM performed “Very well “. -Noted improvement to present (Threshold method) . Separates the Glint mask - Caspian Sea 7-24- 2012

By monoring the vLt/Lt over time VIIRS seems to be performing well. Some anomalies are expected as these coastal sites.
VIIRS Coast Validation using AERONETS with SAVANT (tool) - Trend of the “GAIN” - Vicarious adjustment of the VIIRS using nL2 gen- Different regions show “slight” different trends .. - Waiting the MX 6.6 EDR to obtain more retrievals to run statistics on IDPS EDR - Validation within 1% based on the Spectral Gains !!

-MX6.6 improvement to retrievals ! - Processing ocean color and not negative - Issues with differences in values (Coastal areas are high in VIIRS ) - WILL ENABLE MORE VIIRS MATCHUPS!
