In this installment, I call two historical individuals to testify to Israel’s contract with God.

Abraham entered into an unconditional contract with God on behalf of his offspring. He’ll outline its provisions.

Moses delivered to the Israelites the covenant’s protocols (the Law). He then led them in a formal acceptance of that conditional covenant. Here we see the timeline of history’s essentially Jewish character.

ABRAHAM: GENESIS 12-15

Page 12: VII Covenant and Timeline

“God swore to me that He would make me into

a great nation. Me! God promised to bless me,

make my name great and said that I should

become a blessing in turn. He would bless

those who bless me, curse those who curse me.

In me, God said, all the nations of the earth

should be blessed. All I had to do was believe

Him and leave Ur and head for Canaan.”

“When I arrived, God

promised the land of

Canaan to me and to my

descendants–forever! God

swore by Himself that this

land should belong to us!

And then he said some-

thing about 400 years of

slavery in Egypt . . . .”

ABRAHAM: (CONT’D)

Page 15: VII Covenant and Timeline

“And so it was–My great-

grandson, Joseph, went

first to Egypt as a slave and

became second only to

Pharaoh in power. Then his

eleven brothers followed.

Prosperity gave way to

tragedy and my people became

slaves to Pharaoh. But God

heard their cry and raised up

Moses to bring His people

out . . .

Page 16: VII Covenant and Timeline

MOSES: DEUTERONOMY 28

Page 17: VII Covenant and Timeline

“God showed me Israel’s

blessings for obeying God’s

Law and the curses for their

disobedience. When Israel

obeys, she would prosper,

blessed in barn and field,

city and country. But, oh,

the cost of disobedience:

pestilence, starvation and

madness. I led the people to

recite both parts and to

accept this covenant.”

MOSES: DEUTERONOMY 28

Page 18: VII Covenant and Timeline

“And then God showed me

my people’s future. He laid

it all out, major event by

major event.”

MOSES TESTIMONY CONTINUES

These events, presented in time

order, make up the timeline

along which God’s plan of

redemption plays itself out. To

these elements Moses shall call

your attention next.

Page 19: VII Covenant and Timeline

OPPRESSION IN THE LAND (DEUTERONOMY 28: 27-35)

“In disobedience, there shall be oppression in the land God gave us, our enemies shall eat up the produce of our land and all we shall be oppressed and crushed continually.”

And so it was throughout the Times of the Judges: crushed in obedience, rescued in repentance and blessed once again for obedience.

Page 20: VII Covenant and Timeline

EXILE FROM THE LAND (DEUTERONOMY 28: 36)

“We shall get for ourselves a king someday. The

Lord will take us to a nation neither us nor the

fathers ever knew. Outside God’s Promised Land

we shall serve the gods of wood and stone we chose

to worship instead of the Living God.”

Indeed, The Jews demand kings for themselves! The last of the lot, Zedekiah, goes into Babylonian exile for 70 years with his rebellious and sinful people.

Page 21: VII Covenant and Timeline

NEW CONQUERORS OF THE LAND(DEUTERONOMY 28: 49)

“We must not have learned faithfulness, for a fierce nation from the ends of the earth comes to dominate us in the land. Had our exile finished? Had we returned only to fall prey again?”

Yes, Moses, the exile ended in a return under

Ezra and Nehemiah. But once again, Israel

strayed from faithfulness and in 63 BC,

Rome swallowed Israel’s homeland

Page 22: VII Covenant and Timeline

DRIVEN FROM THE LAND(DEUTERONOMY 28: 64)

“Moreover”, God told me: “moreover”! He next promised to scatter the Jews amongst all the peoples of the earth. My stubborn people would serve gods of wood and stone and find no rest. They will live with perpetually trembling hearts, failing eyes and despair of soul. How could they fail to understand this covenant’s seriousness?

Here God predicted –prophesied– the

horrors of the Diaspora. Rome did scatter

the Jews all over their empire. Over the

next 1900 years, Jews drifted, persecuted

and pogromed, into every corner of the

earth.

But!!! God also swore that when all these things had come to past, and both blessing and curse had been set before us, that my scattered and exiled people, the Jews, would remember the covenant. Then would they call upon the Lord! Then would God have compassion on them, regather them, restore them from captivity. God’s promises and covenants surely endure forever!

And!! Once back in the Promised Land, God promises to circumcise the hearts of the people and prosper us abundantly.

OUR TIME AND THE LAND(DEUTERONOMY 28: 49)

Here we find the 1948 return of the Jews to

Israel predicted. Here we find God

fulfilling prophecy in our own times.

One more step exists in this outline: the Jewish people will have their hard hearts circumcised. At last, they will have hearts for God, hearts like David’s.

JOSHUA RATIFIES OF THE COVENANT(JOSHUA 8:33-35)

“Oh, my father, as God commanded us, we carefully arrayed ourselves after the battle of Ai-half the tribes on Mt Ebal, the other half on Mt. Gerazim.”

“I read your words to them- no blessing, no curse did I leave unread!”

Page 34: VII Covenant and Timeline

JOSHUA RATIFIES OF THE COVENANT(JOSHUA 8:33-35)

“The whole assembly, even

the little ones, heard these

words and bound themselves

and their descendants to both

the blessings of obedience and

the curses of unfaithfulness.”

“We all swore allegiance and faithfulness!”
