How to suCCessfully ConduCt CHallenGInG ConVersatIons so tHey beCome produCtIVe

Good communication is the foundation of any successful organisation, as the working environment is completely dependent upon effective interaction between colleagues, co-workers and managers. How-ever it is often a challenge as the demand for efficiency requires constant re-organisation, adaption, reflection and co-operation. In order to change and improve working practices, difficult conversations at work are inevitable; how to conduct these challenging encounters successfully is an essential skill which can be learnt in our training days.

The training focuses on teaching the Principles of Attuned Interaction which are empirically derived from research by Professor Colwyn Trevarthen , a psychologist from Edinburgh University in Scotland. These principles of attuned interaction have become the core of an exciting new method of teach-ing and learning (Video Enhanced Reflective Practice) where participants micro-analyse brief films of themselves interacting with others in order to identify their existing strengths in communication along with goals for improvement. The trainers bring expertise in using video feedback alongside the prin-ciples of attuned interaction to enhance the learning and skills of the participants. Feedback from those attending such training is that “a picture is worth a thousand words” and that seeing themselves on video leads to significant learning and development.

The training is suitable for all workers and is particularly beneficial to managers and team leaders. Level One of the training takes place over two days.

The aim of the training is:

• To give participants a supportive space to reflect on, analyse and improve their communication with others in a work environment• To give participants tools to conduct difficult conversations, so that they lead to productive discussion and resolution• To give participants opportunities to reflect on their learning, how it can be ap-plied, and which areas need further development.

Learning objectives: by the end of the two days participants will be able to:

• Describe the key features of verbal and non-verbal communication which facili-tate learning conversations at work• List the ‘Principles of Attuned Interaction ’ and identify when they are using them effectively in their own interactions with others• Describe Stone’s (2000 ) five step model on how to have difficult but productive conversations with others• Identify their impact on their partner in conversation, based on micro-analysis of video sequences of themselves• Recognised moments of success and ‘vitality’ in their interactions and identify how they have facilitated this process• Identify their own strengths in professional communication• Set self-determined new goals to improve effective communication with others at work. • Relate their learning to the wider work environment
