Summer 2017Granger Family: Working together to develop
academically and emotionally confident learners.
Granger Elementary Summer Vocabulary PacketEntering 1st and 2nd Grade Students
Dear Granger Family,
This summer we would like to challenge all Cougars to do two things to keep themselves actively engaged in learning. The first thing all students can do is read or be read to for 20 minutes or more each day. The second challenge asks students to focus on building their academic vocabulary. Academic vocabulary or academic language is the language needed by students to do the work in schools. It includes all the specific vocabulary students need to be successful in their schoolwork. This specific vocabulary is not frequently used in every day life. Therefore, the best way to learn it is to specifically study these words.
This packet contains the resources you need to build student vocabulary:
1. Your summer vocabulary list (by week) ………………………….……………… … Page 32. A glossary of terms ……………………………………………………………………... Pages 4-63. Learning pages for each vocabulary word ………………………………………….. Page 7- 72
Students are encouraged to work on this packet with support from their families and with assistance from online resources if needed. Students who complete the packet and bring it back to school in August will receive a special Summer Vocab Pin for their 2017-2018 Granger Grit Lanyard.
Have a great summer!
