INTRODUCTION

Thanks for helping to spread the word about One Good Thing!

We’ve all seen the stories about trolls, bullies and hate mongers. But guess what? The majority of things that happen online are positive. So the goal of One Good Thing is to drown out whatever negativity exists by showcasing all the great things that people are doing online and with connected technology to make the world (and the Internet) a better place.

ConnectSafely launched its crowd-sourced One Good Thing (#OGT) campaign as part of Safer Internet Day 2014 to demonstrate how people are already making the Internet – and the world – better with acts of kindness big and small. [The theme for SID 2014 – and SID 2015 – is "Let's create a better Internet together."]

It’s all about telling us what you or someone you know has done to make the Internet a better place or the world a better place with the help of the Internet, mobile devices or social media. It can be a video (a short simple “selfie” is fine) or by text.

This kit offers some ideas on how you or your organization can participate. It includes: Ideas for your action plan Sample promotional social media text Sample promotional blog or newsletter post How to host a One Good Thing party Logo

SAMPLE PROMOTIONAL BLOG OR NEWSLETTER POST

(CITY, STATE) We’ve all seen the stories about trolls, bullies and hate mongers.

But guess what? Most of the things that happen online are positive – by far! So the goal of the One Good Thing campaign is to switch up the conversation, ease the focus on negativity and amplify the good by showcasing what people are doing online and with connected technology to make the world (and the Internet) a better place. ConnectSafely launched the One Good Thing campaign as a way to inspire Internet users around the world to share their One Good Thing. “It was a simple idea – offer a counter to all the negative stories about the Internet and Net users that seem to dominate the news media by surfacing true stories about the good going on online,” says Anne Collier, co-director of ConnectSafely.org.

ConnectSafely is asking everybody to think of and share something good they've done or witnessed online. It could be as simple as sending well wishes in social media or as big as starting an online fundraising campaign for someone in need. Good can go viral on the Internet, starting with even the smallest of actions!

[Optional: Insert quote from someone at your business or organization about why you’re joining the One Good Thing campaign.]

HOW TO HOST A ONE GOOD THING PARTY

“One Good Thing” (OGT) is a campaign of Safer Internet Day US that encourages Internet users of all ages, especially young people, to share one good thing they or people they know have done to make the Internet a better place or the world a better place with the help of the Internet, mobile devices or social media. An OGT party is a fun, one-hour event where people gather to create and submit their short, mobile-phone-based OGT videos at OneGoodThing.org.

Please note: This activity focuses on video OGTs, but if people aren't comfortable sharing via video, texts, tweets, emails, photos of a sign or poster about One Good Thing, etc. are just fine too! Tell your guests they have options!

Stuff You Need

An Internet connection or mobile service and a smartphone or digital camera

How To Do The Party

1. Invite all your friends, peers, club members, etc. IMPORTANT: Tell everybody who has one to bring their phone or video camera.

2. Once everybody’s said hello and is ready to listen, the coordinator explains “why we’re all here” – simple: to think of, create and post One Good Thing in honor of Safer Internet Day – and how we’re going to do this. You can read this: “Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to share one good thing, small or big, that you or someone else or a group of people you know has done to make the Internet a better place OR the world a better place using the Internet.” Refer to OneGoodThing.org/discover for examples.

3. Take 1-2 min. for quiet thinking so everybody can think of the thing they want to share, then 5 min. for everybody to talk about it with their neighbor(s). Feel free to lead a short brainstorm session to get memories rolling.

Page 9: onegoodthing.orgonegoodthing.org/.../2015/01/OGT-partner-kit.docx  · Web viewUse social media to spread the word about One Good Thing #OGT. ... Feel free to riff off them! ONE GOOD

4. Ask everybody to divide up into groups of 2-5 to take videos of 1 to 3 people (or however many can fit into a frame) talking about that OGT. Remember, text or photos of posters or signs with text on them are fine too!

Instructions For Videotaping (read before people start) Full-frame faces (we love faces!) – zoom right in on the 1-3 people as they share. Try not to interrupt or speak over each other on camera – 1 speaker at a time. OGTs can be just 15-20 sec. Short is great. Even a couple of sentences is fine.

Longer’s ok if someone wants to tell a story. If it’s a group on camera, 1 person can tell the thing, with the other 1 or 2 reacting/explaining, etc.

Though it can be fun to videotape each other talking, selfie videos are fine too if anyone prefers to go it solo.

Submit The One Good Things

After everybody’s finished capturing or writing their OGTs, submit them at OneGoodThing.org/share. Enjoy refreshments. Or not. It's your party!

That’s it. The whole idea is for it to be FUN and EASY. These are just guidelines. Feel free to riff off them!
