As we enter our first week of Lent remember fasting, prayer and almsgiving is our themes. We cry out Lord make me clean as the leper did in the Gospel last week.

I remind you of our suggestions here at St. Anthony we ask you to give up one meal a week and donate whatever you think the meal might cost for our Indian Children and place that amount in an envelope and mark it “Indian Children” then place it in the collection basket. Last year we adopted some 30 Children at a cost of $360.00 per child, let’s see if we can do it again.

For me no more macaroni and meatballs until Easter!

Lenten Regulations

Abstinence – Catholics over 14 years of age are bound to the obligation of abstinence. Abstinent is to be observed on Ash Wednesday (Feb. 14) and on all Fridays of Lent. On the days of abstinence, meat may not be used at all.

Fast – Catholics over 18 and up to the beginning of their 60th year are bound to the obligation of fasting. Ash Wednesday (Feb. 14) and Good Friday (March 30) are the days of fasting. On these days, only one full meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and juices are allowed.

PASSION PLAY 2018

Once again, this year, the youth of the parish will present the Passion Play at all Masses on

Palm Sunday weekend. All students from Grades 3 through Confirmation 2 are welcome to join us. We will have rehearsals from 5:00 until 6:15 on

Sunday nights at the Main Church. Our first meeting is today, February 18th. There are many roles to fill including speaking and non-speaking

roles, cast, crew and narrators. Please encourage your child/children to be part of this

beautiful parish tradition! Questions, please see Mrs. Felzani.

TEMPTATION“Pray that you may not undergo the

test” (Lk.22:40)

We always look temptation as something bad and want to escape from it. But we are bound to face simply by virtue of being human. In the Bible, the words used for temptation are nasah (Hebrew) and peirazo (Greek). Both words can be translated as either “temptation” or “testing.” It denotes two notions, namely an enticement to do evil and something that proves our character and shows the depth or integrity of our commitment to God. In other words, it is essential to the well- rounded life of a person. It helps us prove our inner nature and our faithfulness to God. St. Paul says Jesus was tempted in every way, just as we are, yet without sin. (Heb. 4:15). Therefore, it is important to understand that temptation is not itself sin. We sin when we entertain temptation. (2Cor. 10:5).

According to holy scripture, there are these elements which lead us to temptation. They are world, flesh and Satan.

The word “world” here does not mean “that which God created”, which is good. Rather, “world” when used in this sense in the Scriptures, refer to the powers, opinions, priorities, and “values” that are arrayed against God (Jn. 15:19; Rom. 12:2). The world mesmerizes us with its beauties and trinkets, its comforts and priorities. Yet they are essentially physical and passing. We see the glory of the world and easily forget the more glorious One who made it. We seek its gifts and so quickly forget the giver of those gifts. We delight in creation but so often not in its Creator.

Here “flesh” (sarx) does not refer to the physical body per se but to our many sinful drives. The flesh is highly rebellious. It resists the truth and values given by God. Other sinful drives of the flesh include fear, hatred, vengefulness, unbelief, and worldliness. These serve as deep sources of temptation. (Matt. 15:18-20; Rom. 7:18-19).

Mount Calvary is the academy of our better life. In life, we always want to have good time, fun and joy. If anything goes wrong and that too seems happening again and again we are not able to take it. We feel terrible and tend to give up on faith and life too. Saint John of the Cross was a man of God but in his life time he had lot of faith testing moments. He had a lot of displeasing and disagreeable moments. His life story tells us that even his own brothers in the monastery misunderstood him and treated him inhumanly. In those moments, he neither ran away from God nor gave up on his own life rather he withstood remembering the “Passions of Christ”, which made him to advance in holiness and eventually to the blessing of becoming a saint. St. James says, “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him” (James 1/12). We have just begun another “Lenten Season”. God has given another chance to review our life and to make it better. In this season we are in a special way invited to recollect the passions of Christ and make advancements in faith and life.

Our Confirmation candidates, along with the CCD kids our parish, are going to enact the passions of Christ on Palm Sunday weekend. And they start their rehearsal for it on this weekend Feb 18, 2018 at 5:00 PM in the main church.

On Feb 18, 2018 we do the “First Sunday of Lent” There will be no session for the Confirmation Candidates on this weekend yet they have to attend any one of the weekend Masses and do the sign-up sheet kept in the vestibule. In the evening at 5:00 PM all the candidates are required to be in the main church for the Passion play rehearsal. Being a part of “Passion Play” is mandatory for the Confirmation Program of our parish.

The First Sunday in LentBackground on the Gospel Reading

On the first Sunday of Lent, the Gospel reading in each Lectionary cycle is about Jesus’ temptation in the desert. This event in the life of Jesus is reported in each of the Synoptic Gospels—Matthew, Mark, and Luke—but it is not found in John’s Gospel. This year we read Mark’s account of this event.

Compared to the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, the details throughout Mark’s narrative are sparse. This is evident in Mark’s account of Jesus’ temptation in the desert. Mark tells us only that Jesus was led into the desert by the Spirit and that for 40 days he was tempted by Satan. The Gospels of Matthew and Luke explain that Jesus fasted while in the desert, that Satan presented him with three temptations, and that Jesus refused each one, quoting Scripture. Only the Gospels of Matthew and Mark report that angels ministered to Jesus at the end of his time in the desert.

In each of the Synoptic Gospels, the temptation of Jesus follows his baptism by John the Baptist. In Mark’s Gospel, we are told that Jesus went into the desert immediately after his baptism, led by the Spirit. Jesus’ public ministry in Galilee begins after his temptation in the desert. Mark’s Gospel makes a connection between the arrest of John the Baptist and the beginning of Jesus’ ministry. Jesus’ preaching about the Kingdom of God is in continuity with the preaching of John the Baptist, but it is also something new. As Jesus announces it, the Kingdom of God is beginning; the time of the fulfillment of God’s promises is here.

The fact that Jesus spent 40 days in the desert is significant. This recalls the 40 years that the Israelites wandered in the desert after being led from slavery in Egypt. The prophet Elijah also journeyed in the desert for 40days and nights, making his way to Horeb, the mountain of God, where he was also attended to by an angel of the Lord. Remembering the significance of these events, we also set aside 40 days for the season of Lent.

In Mark’s Gospel, the desert marks beginning of Jesus’ battle with Satan; the ultimate test will be in Jesus’ final hours on the cross. In a similar way, our Lenten observances are only a beginning, a preparation for and a reinforcement of our ongoing struggle to resist the temptations we face in our lives. During Lent, we are led by the Holy Spirit to remember the vows of Baptism in which we promised to reject sin and to follow Jesus. Just as Jesus was ministered to by the angels, God also supports us in our struggle against sin and temptation. We succeed because Jesus conquered sin once and for all in his saving death on the cross.
