Students will do cut paper exercises to explore Notan concepts and then put that knowledge to work to design graphic, modern blocks. With their original blocks students will apply alternate and traditional grid concepts to create unique quilt designs. Students will complete at least one block and one quilt design in class. There will be no sewing on day one. Students will begin block/quilt construction on day two. In Activating Space students will explore the concept of Notan and learn to create a rhythmic interplay between positive and negative space in modern quilt blocks and quilt designs. Fabrics:Minimum of 1 yd. each of two high contrast solid fabrics

The amount of fabric you bring is up to you. It is difficult to predict fabric amounts since every design will be different. Please bring at least one yard each of two high contrast fabrics. You may bring more than two colors, but two colors are sufficient to work with these designs. More fabric will allow you to experiment and explore design possibilities. I highly recommend black and white fabric for this class. Black and while allows you to focus on shape and space without the interference of color decisions. Please bring primarily solids.
