It was another wonderful day for a Dragon Boat Race. Sunday June 26th was the big day

that The Fire Warriors practiced hard for. The Spirit Challenge Cup at the 23rd Annual

Toronto International Dragon Boat Race Festival was the culmination of all the hard work

and dedication that the paddlers gave to the team.

Our team pushed themselves hard and ended up with a hard fought third place finish.

There was much celebration as The Fire Warriors received their bronze medals.

After the medal ceremony, as has become tradition, the people from 87 & 89 HLT

provided us with a delicious picnic. That made it all the better to replace the energy spent

on the water and catch up with people.

On a special note, we had more family members supporting our residents in the boat this

year than any other year.

Every year there are too many people involved in making the Spirit Challenge Cup

possible to thank individually so a hearty and heartfelt thank you to: the paddlers; the

people that supported them; the Dragon Boat Festival organizers and everyone from Na-

tional Dragon Boat Club and the Toronto Chinese Business Association.

We’re looking forward to next year.

Developmental Services within Ontario has reached another phase. As of July 1, 2011 nine (9) re-

gional Developmental Services Ontario organizations began their work. What does this mean for To-

ronto and New Visions Toronto? Surrey Place is the Toronto organization that has been designated as our Developmental Services

Ontario agency and can be referred to as DSO-TR (Developmental Services Ontario Toronto Re-

gion). This means that adults with developmental disabilities coming to the Adult Sector for the first time

will have:

the ability to access information, confirm eligibility for services and support needs, and link to

services and supports;

an easy way to apply for developmental services in their community – one place to go to find

information, have eligibility confirmed and be assessed for service needs; and

less duplication and a fairer, more consistent and transparent application process for everyone

To apply for services and supports please contact DSO Toronto staff at 1-855-372 3858 who will:

confirm if you are eligible to receive services and supports

support you in filling out an Application Package

create a support plan for you

find out if services and supports are available

help you connect to services and supports

New Visions Toronto will continue to fulfill a Lead Agency role for any individuals we have already

been involved with and they along with our current residents are not required to apply to DSOTR.

We look forward to working with Surrey Place to ensure that adults requesting supports are provided

with the right resources.

In addition, I would like to express my hope that everyone has a safe, healthy and enjoyable summer.

In Loving Memory of Dale Hunter

June 16, 2011 was a sad day for the Hunter family, residents and staff of New Visions Toronto.

On that day Dale Walter Hunter passed away peacefully in St. Michael Hospital’s Palliative Care Unit. Dale, unfortunately, had frequent and extended stays at St. Mike’s. But whenever he was there, there

was not a moment that Dale was alone.

His parents, Carolyn and Tom, his sister Marissa, friends, housemates and support staff always surrounded him. They spent endless hours by his bedside talking to him and sharing stories. There was

at a lot of laughter, tears and love as Dale was comforted and cared for. Dale was an avid sports fan and suffered with great dedication along with the rest of the Toronto Maple

Leaf fans. Dale hosted many great parties and he loved music, movies and the sounds of people having

a good time and socializing. Dale was very active in the community and spent as much time as

possible out and about in our great city. While we are very sad that Dale has passed away we are all uplifted and comforted by sharing our fond

memories and stories of our time with him. Not a day goes by that we don’t think of the young man

who touched all of our lives in so many different ways.

Residents and staff of 89 HLT

Tom and I would like to say thank you to New Visions staff, from office staff to household caregivers

for the care provided to Dale over the years. We always had confidence and peace of mind of Dale's

care. The girls treated him as part of their own family. Dale always enjoyed the company of his housemates and the staff. He had many laughs with them and enjoyed sharing time watching movies or

bowling and going on outings. We came to think of them as our extended family and will always be

grateful.

Carolyn & Tom Hunter

A tree was planted in Dale’s name and the dedication ceremony will take place

on Sunday September 11, 2011 @ 2:30 pm at Dods & McNair Memorial

Forest—Island Lake Conservation Area, Orangeville, Ontario.

Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.

By Theodore Roosevelt

On the weekend of July 15 & 16, 2011, I had the honor of participating in my eldest sister Ashley’s

wedding. The special weekend started Friday evening with lots of socializing with so many family

& friends at my parent’s house. This is called Harldi, a Hindu ritual. Jen, who supported me over

the weekend, did this ritual to Ashley on my behalf. Saturday, ―the big day‖, started very early, as

we all had to get ready. I got to wear a purple/burgundy/green lehenga with gold sparkle bangles,

and high heels. We headed off to the Hindu Temple, which was beautifully decorated, for the marriage ceremony. This is when Ashley & Ashwin became husband and wife. It was a wonderful

ceremony. I was a little sad as Ashley will now be moving out of my parents house and I will miss

her when I go to visit on the weekends. Once this was done, we went back to my parents house to

change outfits and then headed to the reception. This time, I got to wear a white and purple dress

with different high heels. At the beginning of the reception, I had my very own introduction entrance with a song just for me. I enjoyed hearing all the great speeches, seeing everyone dance

and have a good time, but most of all, I loved the music!! I want to wish my sister and new brother

-in-law all the best and I can’t wait for a little niece or nephew.

On July 11th, 2011, Quincy, Nicolas, Sabrina & Jen packed up the van and headed to our nation’s

capital for a little R & R and some site-seeing. We got to stay at the Marriott Hotel and felt like

royalty. Some highlights of our trip include the tour of Parliament Hill. There is a fountain at the

front steps that has a flame that is always burning, it never goes out. This was really cool and we

all threw in a penny and made a wish. We also got a boat tour of the Rideau Canal. Some also

refer to it as the Ottawa River. This was really fun and relaxing. We also did a little shopping at

the Rideau Centre. The scenery in Ottawa was fantastic. One of the last things we did, and the

most memorable, was we got invited to Sabrina’s family’s home for supper on Tuesday

night. This wasn’t just any old supper, we were treated to an authentic Haitian meal. We all enjoyed it sooo much that we could hardly move when it was time to say good-bye. Can’t wait to

see where the open road will take us next year!

We, the 83 HLT gang left here on the 14th of June, 2011 to go for a cottage vacation at Jackson’s

Point. We had fun, walked on the beach of Lake Simcoe, watched summer camp kids play in the field,

played cards, and listened to music. One of the staff played his guitar and sang some gospel songs. On the 16th of June, Janelle’s parents came and she had a wonderful birthday party as witnessed by all

the other house mates.

It has become our tradition (the 83 HLT gang) to start our summer by camping at the cottages at

Jackson’s` Point every year.

FRENCH TOAST MEETS GRILL CHEESE This is a breakfast sandwich or anytime sandwich with a twist.

4 slices of bread of choice

2 large eggs

½ cup of milk

1 cup of shredded cheese of choice

¼ teaspoon of chili flakes or ¼ teaspoon of hot sauce

¼ teaspoon of garlic powder

Salt and pepper to taste

Margarine or vegetable spray

In a medium-mixing bowl beat eggs, milk, chili or hot sauce, garlic powder and salt and

pepper.

Heat a medium frying pan and melt some margarine or apply vegetable spray.

Dip bread slices in egg mix. Fry bread until you notice that the egg is cooked.

Once all the slices are cooked, return a slice to the pan and add the shredded cheese then

place the other slice of fried bread on top to create a sandwich and fry until you see the

cheese melting.

Remove from heat. Slice in half and enjoy! Serves two.

Other vacations have happened this summer for the people we support. David, Chris & Chris

went to David’s family cottage, Michael & Anglie went to a staff family cottage, David &

Chris went to Niagara Falls, Diana, Kim & Jason went to Welland and Niagara Falls. Future

trips are also being planned to Kingston Ont. and New Orleans! A huge thank you to the staff

who support our residents to enjoy these vacations!

Summer also means summer recreation students! This year we were lucky to receive funding

from Human Resources Development Canada for 7 summer students. Our students assist the

residents and staff with fun activities inside and outside the house. Having extra hands to help

out is always welcomed, especially for the kids who are out of school for the summer. New

Visions Toronto would like to give a warm welcome and thank you to: Charlene and Erica at

Olean, Katrina at Bicknell, Ankit and Jenny at 81 HLT, Roshnelle at 87 HLT and Jonathon at

apt. 101. We sincerely hope your experience with us is rewarding and memorable!
