Workshop Description: All participants will gain access to the newly adopted 2017 Mathematics Standards. Changes and improvements will be highlighted as well as other resources will be provided. Participants will explore how the brain works and what we can do to help our students move from just learning mathematical information” to “knowing the math and how to use and apply it” based on the work of Jo Boaler and Carol Dweck. Participants will develop rich mathematical tasks to meet their specific grade level standards- and - practice methods of teaching with and for a growth mindset. Participants will also focus on effective teaching practices that build fluency and conceptual understanding in the areas of numbers and operations, geometry, fractions, expressions, and equations. Administrators will focus on how to structure formative assessments to gain information desired in order to drive instruction. Rubrics will be shared to assist in evaluating the alignment of instructional and professional development resources with the 2017 Kansas Standards for Mathematics as well as instructional shifts necessary in their implementation and training. Resources specifically designed for the 2017 math standards will be shared as well as available tools for assisting schools and districts with staff, parent, and public communication related to standards and assessment; available tools for instructional leaders and coaches to support their work with teachers; as well as resources to assist teachers with standards-aligned instruction.

This format mirrors the KWL process and it quite beneficial- even for educators! Each section should show thoughtful responses, with complete sentences, proper use of grammar, and well thought out questions. Feel free to take notes during the session, and then re-type your responses at home if desired. We will send each of you an electronic copy for your use, following registration day and enrollment completion. If you have any questions, please feel free to email Lisa Lajoie-Smith at [email protected]
