Florida Adult ESL Curriculum Framework

Preface
These correlations are designed to facilitate the use of Pearson Longman materials for Adult Education programs. The core course materials are correlated to the Florida Curriculum Frameworks, and the supplemental materials are correlated to these core course materials. Workbooks are included with the textbooks for ease of use of this document.
The core course books include:ExpresswaysSide by SideWorkplace Plus
The supplemental materials include:Word by Word Basic Picture Dictionary Word by Word Picture Dictionary and workbooks
Azar Grammar Series and workbooksFocus on Grammar, including software and workbooksGrammarWork
Voices of Freedom
The materials, used together, form a balanced program guide, serving the multiple goals of adult education programs concerned with alignment to state standards. These correlations advance through the textbooks sequentially, unit by unit, matching the way a teacher and class would naturally progress through the core textbooks. The correlations also allow a teacher to see how materials fit with each other.
Since Pearson Longman has several choices of grammar programs, three options were selected to complement the core texts, allowing for different goals from program to program. (The grammar texts are correlated to the core texts, and not to the frameworks. If a grammar text contained “academic skills” or correlated to a standard, this was not noted)
Some chapters may contain a correlation to a curriculum standard that is not noted because of its earlier inclusion. For instance, question formation is practiced in many chapters, but this competency will only be listed once or twice as a competency. The teacher or student can use the correlations. The language is simplified so that a student can make use of the document, if so desired. Finally, the index at the back of the correlation guide gives a sequential progression of the frameworks and can be used as a reference.
A Brief Description of the Materials
Side by Side, third edition, is a dynamic, all-skills program that integrates conversation practice, reading, writing, and listening – all in a light-hearted, fun, and easy-to-use format that has been embraced by students and teachers worldwide. Every lesson integrates grammar, vocabulary, everyday life situations, and functional language in a motivating format.
Expressways provides students with the most essential vocabulary, grammar, and functional expressions needed to communicate at a basic level. Expressways offers an all-skills language practice in an imaginative highways theme. Expressways incorporates cooperative learning, critical thinking, role playing, cross-cultural discussions, self-assessment, and community activities to promote an interactive, student-centered learning experience.
Workplace Plus is a series that correlates tightly with SCANS, EFF, and more. It rigorously builds awareness of key civics concepts essential to the American community. The program offers purposeful collaborative projects to ready students for teamwork outside of class, and contains an expanded listening comprehension program.
Word by Word Picture Dictionary and Word by Word Basic Picture Dictionary present vocabulary through lively, full-color illustrations and an outstanding array of innovative support materials. The unique conversational approach of the program gives students communication practice with every word and provides students with key vocabulary for a wide range of relevant topics and situations.
Voices of Freedom is a content-based English and Civics text that introduces basic government and history topics through a carefully controlled sequence of lessons that simultaneously teach beginning-level vocabulary and grammar.
Basic English Grammar and Fundamentals of English Grammar are proven grammar texts that students and teachers love to use. These grammar books blend communicative and interactive approaches with tried-and-true grammar teaching. The Azar Grammar Series offers concise, accurate, level-appropriate grammar information with abundant exercises, contexts, and activities.
Focus on Grammar is an integrated skills course that makes grammar fun and accessible. Each text integrates the following chapter parts: “Grammar in Context,” “Grammar Presentation,” “Focused Practice,” and “Communication Practice” in a multimedia course.
GrammarWork is a series of four grammar exercise books that feature structures and vocabulary tied to real and meaningful contexts to help students learn more rapidly and efficiently.
