ABOUT SILCHAR

Silchar is the headquarter of Cachar district in the state of Assam in India. It is 343

kilometres south east of Guwahati. It is the second largest city of Assam after

Guwahati both in terms of population as well as area. Being politically stable in the

otherwise disturbed Northeast earned it the bon mot of "Island of Peace" from India's

then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. During the British rule, ships were docked at the

bank of the "River Barak" so a market developed at the bank and became a major

place of economic activity. The bank was covered with stones to help dock ships and

vessels, and the market developed at a place which was fully covered with stones.

People started to refer to the place as "Shiler Chor", meaning a bank of stone.

Gradually "Shiler Chor" became "Silchar" for linguistic simplification and, later on,

British officials started to use "Silchar" in their official documents referring to the

surrounding area of the market. "Silchar" became the official name of the place.

Beside it is near to two main tourism place which is Halflong (the scenic beauty) and

ofcourse the most important Shillong and Cherrapunji (the ultimate place for highland

lover).

Places to visit near Silchar

1. SHILLONG, MEGHALAYA

Meghalaya, a full-fledged state since 1972 when carved out of Assam, is one of the most beautiful places in India. Situated in the north eastern part of the country, Scenic Meghalaya with majestic hills, spectacular waterfalls, dense forests and valleys is a heaven to nature lovers. Meghalaya means ‘The abode of clouds’ and on visiting the place, you are sure to see for yourself that the land was rightly named thus.

Shillong, the capital city, is famous for its spectacular beauty. Popularly known as the ‘Scotland of the East’ as it resembles the Scottish lands, Shillong’s landscape has to be seen to be believed. It is the only hill station in India that has accessible routes from all sides. Shillong is about 220 kms from Silchar and mode of

transportation is by roads by Taxi, TataSumo or any other Car or by Bus . Here are the leading attractions in Shillong:

Shillong Peak, Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Culture, Elephant Falls, Laitlum Canyons, Mawlyngbna, Mawlynnong Waterfalls, Sweet Falls, Spread Eagle Falls, Mawphlang Falls, Mawphlang Sacred Forest, Mawjymbuin Cave, India Orchidarium and Botanical Garden, Lady, Hydari Park, Crinoline Falls, David Scott Trail, Ward’s Lake, Umiam Lake.

2. CHERRAPUNJI, MEGHALAYA

Cherrapunji boasts of being the second wettest place on earth. It may have lost its

first place to Mawsynram, which is 16 km away from Cherrapunji, but it has won the

hearts of tourists thanks to its picturesque landscapes. With Mother Nature being

lavish in her offerings to this land, you are sure to find Cherrapunji to be a heaven

on earth. The land is also the only place in the country to receive rainfall round the

year.Cherrapunji is around 65kms from Shillong and mode of transportation

mainly is by road by taxi hire or tourist bus. Here are the leading attractions in

Cherrapunji:

Nohkalikai Falls, Mawsmai Cave, Mawmluh Cave, Krem Phyllut Cave, Dain, Thlen Falls, Kynrem Falls, Nohsngithiang Falls, Eco ParkCherrapunji Theological College at Nongsawlia, Thangkharang Park, Khoh, Ramhah or Basket of the Giant

3. KAZIRANGA NATIONAL PARK WILDLIFE SCANTUARY, ASSAM

Kaziranga National Park has been declared a World Heritage Site. The park is

spread over 430 sq. kms and you will find various wild species such as tiger, elephant,

rhinoceros, Indian bison, sambar, deer and many more. If you love birds, you need to

be here during winter as migratory birds are seen in great numbers. You could go

round the park in a jeep or car. If you fancy elephant ride, you are most

welcome.Kaziranga is around 193 kms from Guwahati and mode of

transportation includes by road and railway. The nearest cities from Kaziranga

National Park are Jorhat and Tezpur.

How to reach SilcharThe town of Silchar is regarded as the main economic gateway to the neighbouring states of Manipur, Tripura and Mizoram and has a considerable influx of traders and merchants every year, for commercial and business purpose. As such, the transport system of the region is given much importance and the place is well connected by a good network of railways and roadways. Besides this, the place also has an important airport, conducting regular flights to areas in and outside Assam. The distance of Silchar from the economic hub of the state, Guwahati is only 326 km and from the cultural capital of the state, Jorhat is a mere 508 km. The major ways by which people can safely and conveniently commute to this major area is given below. So, read on and know how to reach Silchar easily.

Traveling to SilcharAirThe Kumbhirgram airport in Silchar is located at a distance of about 22 km from the town and is a highly modernized air station, with state-of-the-art facilities. It is the second busiest airport in the state, next to Guwahati. The airport remains busy all-round the year and regular flights operate from this region to areas like Agartala, Kolkata, Imphal and Guwahati.

Road

As with the other regions of Assam, the ASTC (Assam State Transport Corporation) provides regular bus services Guwahati to Silchar & Silchar to Guwahati as well, to other regions within the state. Functioning 24 hours a day, the corporation has some regular and luxury buses for the normal routes and special mini buses for the neighbouring hilly areas. Nowadays, computerized ticketing systems are also available in different counters within the town. A number of private (regular and deluxe) buses also operate from here making it very convenient to travel to and from this place. These mostly connect to areas like Shillong, Aizawl, Guwahati, Agartala and such other places. The NH 44 connecting Silchar to Guwahati is considered to be one of the beautiful in the entire country, as it passes through the borders of Meghalaya giving its passengers a breath-taking view of the exquisite Khasi and Jaintia hill.Sahajayogis who prefer road journey can board ASTC or a private bus or a daily route taxi from Guwahati to Silchar directly. It is approximately 10 to 12 hrs journey from Guwahati to Silchar by road and one enjoys plenty of natural beauties on the way to & from Silchar.

Rail

Maintained and managed by the North-East Frontier Railways, Guwahati junction is the main gateway of railway to northeast India. Daily frequent trains are available for the conveyance from major cities of India. Sahaja yogis who prefer train journey can board direct train to Guwahati from

Kolkata, New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai for which train schedule is given in image 2 and then take a way to Silchar by road or by Air.

Kindly note that train lines to Silchar from Guwahati is under construction and is expected to be operational very soon. The matter will be informed to all as soon as it is operational. However Sahajis are requested to be in touch with us so that we can inform you accordingly.
