PROVINCIALS’ DESKDear sisters, I would like to share a reflection in this season of Lent. We focus our attention on the Gospel of Luke: 6:38 “I suppose that the notion of “a full measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over” is a little less familiar to us today, when so much of

what we buy is pre-packaged, sealed and clinically weighed, and where you never get more than precisely what you pay for.

We would have to go back more to our childhood days – when we bought food in traditional grocery shops or in markets – to remember the joy that you got when the dealer or the shopkeeper threw in something extra for you as a child.  Getting something extra for yourself was a real joy.

Generosity means breaking out of the closed logic of everyone getting their just-deserves and nothing more. Being a generous person is part of being a true human being.  There will always be something lacking in the make-up of any person who fails to be generous.

Let us explore this a little deeper.  In the Gospel of Luke however, we are called to be imitators of God because he is compassionate.  Compassion is a new definition of the perfection, the perfection which we find in God.  Self-giving love is the path through which Jesus reveals to us who God is.

Within the vision of a generously compassionate, religious life is called to play an essential role.  Religious life involves much more than a conceptual understanding of the evangelical counsels.  Poverty, chastity and obedience are fundamentally not just renunciations.  I could renounce wealth, and power and sensuality and be a fully self-centered person, interested in no St. Pedro De San Jose Betancur province | News Bulletin - 03

one else but myself.  The evangelical counsels must leave us free to be generous and compassionate and indeed they find their true meaning only when they result in someone who becomes generous and compassionate because they identify with Jesus who is compassionate and who wishes to be like Jesus who is compassionate and generous in compassion.  Scandals and failures around religious life – in our times or at any time in history or in any place – arise where generous compassion somehow gets lost within self-interest or when religious become preoccupied with tasks or where we begin to feel that compassion can somehow be made into a business.

We religious are called to constant renewal.  Renewal in religious life will emerge when that sense of generous compassion without boundaries is rediscovered and where generosity and compassion, dominate every aspect of our lives.    That was the characteristic of our holy Founders who were prepared to find new ways of witnessing to the love of God where society in general failed to identify human suffering and exclusion.

Without compassion we become blind to the needs of others.  Only those possessed of a genuine sense of compassion will be able to identify the real burdens of those who are weighed down and marginalized or who find little hope in their future.  A life of personal poverty and obedience and chastity must genuinely free the consecrated person from just being part of the established ways of thinking and living in our consumerist world.

The freedom to live the evangelical counsels with generosity comes in a special way from prayer.  Our Founders were not just innovative persons: they were mystics. Placing oneself honestly in the presence of God who is generous, must empty us from any sense of relying on ourselves.  It must make us realize that we are not the owners of this earth and its peoples, but are called to be its good stewards in accordance with God’s plan. Pope Francis – who was preparing to retire as Archbishop – responded to the unexpected call, never give in to compliance?  Giving in is refusing to be generous; it is self-thinking and it is self-defeating and indeed it is the opposite of being generous and compassionate.

This year of consecrated life is an important event in the calendar of the Church around the world. I encourage you to celebrate your gifts, knowing that your response will be one of renewed compassion and generosity. If that

happens, Jesus will ensure that the Church we all love will be enriched with his gifts, not in clinically measured packages, but with “a full measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over”.   “Compassion and generosity generate joy”.

31st to 1st February Vocational Promoters Meeting in the Provincialate.

23 to 25 she went to Vijayawada to visit the places of Gudiwada, Mariapuram, Korkol, Kothapalli, Golconda and Peddaparimi in Guntur Dist.

Vocations are born in and from prayer

Meeting for the vocation promoters was held at Provincialate on 31st of January to 1st of February. The general and specific objectives of the meeting were read and shared. Sr. Jain Mary Joseph the vocation promoter of our Province gave introductory talk and welcomed us all, followed by the introduction and reflections of our Provincial Superior Rev. Sr. Leena Mary Medabalimi, who started her reflection with the quote of our beloved Pope Francis, “I want to say one word to you and this word is joy. Wherever there are consecrated people there is always joy”.

Sister continued saying that we all have the motive to promote vocation, because we are chosen by God in whom we find the fullness of our life. “Come and See” is the golden rule of pastoral work and vocation promotion. We should become sign posts to lead young girls to Jesus. Jesus knows the kind of person we become, but it takes time to become. God allows us to have troubles and difficulties for this. He entered in to our personal history and turned in to His own history.

Wherever there is love, fervor and desire to bring Christ to others, genuine vocations will arise. The young people we meet should find us attractive because they see us women who are happy of living our life with God and for God. Our lives should radiate joy and beauty of living the Gospel and following Christ to the full.

Sr. Michael Mazarella Pudhota the Advisor of Formation, gave valuable reflection such as “the world calls us for upward mobility of power, status, vanity etc. we are called for downward mobility of humility and poverty. The world invites us to succeed, climb and to shine. But God invites us to climb down, to serve and die for others.

Sr. Michael Mazarella Pudhota presented the status of vocations in our Congregation. Really it is very sad thing to know about this vocational crisis. As the remedy we are asked to do the vocational promotion with enthusiastic spirit.

On 01st of February, Sr. Maria Auxilia Athimala the advisor of Apostolate gave reflections on how to motivate in order to attract the vocations. She said that we should impress people by the way we speak and do our mission. Whatever we do, we must prepare and present it in a better manner. A consecrated person herself is a message for vocation promotion, beyond by going and speaking. Vocations are promoted by means of prayers of a clear presentation of our Charism and Spirituality.

In the second session our Provincial Superior Rev. Sr. Leena Mary Medabalimi explained the fifteen diseases which our Pope Francis mentioned and 15 remedies our Mother General Diana Lucia T. prepared. It is very applicable with the practical explanations of our Pope Francis and the wise remedies of our Mother General.

Formation for Transformation

This seminar was held in Visakhapatnam from 31st Jan to 1st Feb. The main theme of seminar is facing challenges and exploring new possibilities in our formation and to go beyond the present system. Sr. Lilly Josephine Tharigopala, Sr. Shantha Kumari Bellamkonda and I participated in this seminar. The resource person Fr.Jacob MSFS asked us to expand the vision of formation and set goal to be like Jesus and to continue His mission. He took

the word and summarized as "CHRISTIFICATION THROUGH HUMANIZATION". He insisted saying that during formation we should first form the formees to be a human being; to find creative ways to humanizing spirituality and to create eagerness to prayer.

He dealt about the problems faced by the formators and formees with the Gospel passages from Lk 6:6 -11 and Jn 5: 1- 16. He speaks about three persons in this Gospel:

Man with withered hand Scribes and Pharisees The Man of JESUS

Man with withered hand represents some of the formees are inside without knowing why they are here...they are not determined, nor take an initiative. They cannot motivate themselves; No internal juice or joy. We need to continually make aware of the candidates with the following question: Whom are they seeking?

Scribes and Pharisees: They are the people who take religion seriously and meticulously analyze and reason out about anything and everything. Yet they try to block the work of God. About formators and formation, people always complain but we should go beyond.

Man of Jesus: He enters, teaches, recognizes what others are thinking, commands, questions and calmly acts. He is not afraid to confront people. Formator should know what she is doing and do it without any hesitation.

We, as Formators should become at home with ourselves and lead others to be at home with themselves. The Holy Trinity is the source, model and reference point for our formation. Each one is a small trinity and images of communion.

During the seminar I felt as Formee not as a formator. It is a beautiful opportunity for me to go back and to revise, to analyze about my formation. So I take this opportunity to thank our Provincial Superior for granting me this chance to participate in this seminar to renew my life as well as to help others. The talks which I heard not only remain in my mind but touched the core of my heart and I try my best to live Jesus and to give Jesus to others in my mission where He has planted me.

FICCI’S School Education Conference

This meeting was very helpful to me and for all those who took active participation in it. It mainly focused on how to deepen holistic personality of the children, uses of technology and life skills in the schools and how to construct creative curriculum.

In order to bring out the potentiality of the children, basically the child must be physically healthy, need organization to achieve the target and need of physical exercise, as Swami Vivekananda quoted that sound body leads to sound mind.

Technology helps the children in the learning process. It alters the training of the students. We can’t teach anything to the students, but we can make them to think. The world is changing from E. Learning to M. Learning.

The teachers should be the instrument to bring out this abilities and talents of the child. We have to instill the skills like collaborative skills, critical thinking, curiosity, integrity, clarity, empathy, maturity, emotions, knowing how to ask for help and imaginations. Among all these curiosity and imaginations should be encouraged among the children. And giving sufficient time to project their ideas and to focus on assigned ideas is very much needed.

For the holistic development of the child creative curriculum is necessary. Creating a better future requires creativity in the present. Teachers, learners and the society are responsible in making the curriculum more effective which paves ways for fast learning.

I thank our Provincial Superior and her team for giving us such opportunities to update our knowledge in order to be effective in our educative mission.

renewal. The colloquium was held from 02 to 05 February 2015. The topic was “EFFECTIVE RELIGIOUS LIFE FOR INDIA “

Our Provincial Sr. Leena Mary Medabalimi and myself took part the seminar. There were more than 78 participants from various institutions of all over India. The resource persons of the seminar enlightened us with fruitful deliberations to analyze the present scenario of our religious life in INDIA.

The following topics were dealt:

1. RELIGIOUS and CHURCH 2. RELIGIOUS in INDIA 3. RELIGIOUS for MISSION

The topics were dealt from Biblical; Theological, Ecclesial and Pastoral perspectives. They enlightened the gathering in the prospective of Religious life, more matter of being than doing. The religious, following the particular Charism of their institute, do a lot of ministries and services in the fields of education, health care and social development. These ministries and services are to be rooted in their total consecration of their whole person. The religious belong to the life and holiness of the Church. It should be always kept in mind “the apostolate of all religious consists primarily in witness of their consecrated life.”

While conducting the seminar they highlighted the following points of Pope Francis while He was declaring the year of Consecrated Life:

The church must be attractive. Wake up the world! Be witnesses of a different way of doing the things, acting, and living! Show it’s possible to live differently in this world.

The need to live and behave in a truly different way, recognizing one’s weakness and sins, but acting with “generosity, detachment, sacrifice ,forgetting oneself in order to take care of others.”

It’s necessary to spend time in real contact with the poor.”For me this is really important : It’s necessary to know from experience what’s real, to dedicate time going to the periphery to truly know the situation and life of the people,”

Those who work with young people cannot limit themselves to saying things that are too ordered and structured like a treaty because these

things fly over their heads. A new language is needed; a new way of saying things. Today God calls us to leave the nest that’s holding us and to be emissaries.

A Charism needs to be “lived according to the place, times and people. The Charism is not a bottle of distilled water; It needs to be lived with energy, rereading it culturally, too.

Inculturating a Charism, therefore, is fundamental, and this does not mean relativizing it. We must not make a Charism, therefore, rigid and uniform. When we make cultures uniform, and then we kill the Charism.

The specter to combat is the image of religious life as a refuge and comfort away from a world on the “outside “that is difficult and complex.

Thinking that formation is completed after seminary studies “is hypocrisy, fruit of clericalism.

Preparing new members for religious life is “a craft, not a police operation. We must include the formation of heart. Otherwise we creating little monsters. And then these little monsters mould the people of God.

People working in Formation need to think about the people of God who will be in contact with.”I’m reminded of those religious who have a heart as sour as vinegar; they are not made for the people. We must not create administrators and managers, but fathers, brothers and sisters, travel companions.

The colloquium was based on the Pope’s above insights for the year of consecrated Life.

During the group work we discussed the following issues; the input of the sharing was inspirational and dynamic. The Reflections were discussed and decision was taken for the better future of the Consecrated life in India. IDENTITY OF THE CONSECRATED PERSON MEANS TO REGAIN the lost identity INSTITUTIONAL CHANGES WAYS to COMMIT oneself to the NEW MISSION

Here I would thank God thank God the Almighty for giving me this opportunity to discover more of Him and to bear witness of His love. Also I render my gratitude to our Provincial, who has given the chance to respond St. Pedro De San Jose Betancur province | News Bulletin - 03

Bringing God’s Embrace: Living and radiating the Joy of the Gospel.

The three days seminar from o6th to 08th February was held in the Sanyasa Institute of Consecrated life at Carmelaram, Bangalore. This year being the year of consecrated life and respond to the exhortation of Pope Francis to wake up the world with the joy of the Gospel were centered on the theme of interest and relevance for the consecrated persons.

“Mebasser”: Prophets of Joy – new evangelizers. Mebasser means communicating the Good News. We are consecrated to be the Mebassers of God’s Kingdom, prophets of peace, joy and love and not the prophets of calamities. Are we connected with Jesus who is the Mebasser? Our life and mission should be connected with Him.

We need to be more open to the changes of the world. We need to find new scenarios, searching tirelessly the new things. We need to be firm and to qualify our presence. Being the Mebasser of God is not living our life comfortably, searching our interest or living our life with our own spirit. Rather we are called to be the servants of God. The community must be the centre place where one can learn to be the true Mebasser of God. But today our communities are lack of interest, lack of spirit and lack of witness. So, we are called to creative in our communities with new way of thinking, singing, doing and dancing which will help us to be the new Mebassers of God’s Kingdom. Our first mission is joyous community living. Community life is an authentic sign of God’s empowering in us. It is a pretty challenge. We have to be the new prophets in the community.

The task of religious is to bring God’s embrace to the people by living and radiating the joy of the Gospel. Embrace is a sign of joy, communication and peace. Because ours is a God who keeps in touch, He is always in relations and communion with all the people. God embraced the people through the Incarnation of His Son Jesus. We also called to incarnate ourselves in order to be Jesus to everyone. And we are asked to be the presence of Gospel in the society. We, the religious are called to spread joy with pure excellence of prayer life. Today the world is becoming powerful. So our joy in Christ must become powerful giving heed to its expectations. So joy is much deeper that St. Pedro De San Jose Betancur province | News Bulletin - 03

is Christ like in attitudes. If we don’t have proper goal or motive we cannot live this joy. Joy is a God given gift. And our religious vocation is a joyous response to God.

Taste the joy within you. Then you can become the others centered. What is our identity as religious? Our identity is nothing but belonging to the company of Jesus.

How can we live our life creatively?

* Look at the positive strengths and make use of these strengths.* Positive experiences.* Discover the good things in one another.* Vibrate the positive energy in the community.* Don’t label the sisters with your negative thoughts.* Listening to others with heart not with ears.* Selfless and others oriented service.* Universal love, sacrificial love and genuine love.* Have a common vision.* Use please, thanks and sorry.* Give place for corrections in the community.* Don’t give place for gossips.* Conflicts will happen but it should not make us emotional.* Positive criticisms.

So by being joyful let us show to everyone that we follow Christ. Let our joy infect the others. Let us not forget that the authentic fraternity increases our joy.

Superiors Meeting 14 th – 15 th February 2015

Thanking God for the opportunity given to me to be in His service and to be witness of His love in this world, and thanking Rev. Sr. Leena Medabalimi, Provincial Superior for her insights and recommendations given to us Superiors, the animators of the communities, I want to express these few

seminar on the demands, and how the formation should transform our lives. The meeting and the seminar were very interesting and helpful for me first of all as Bethlemite Consecrated and as a Formator. Sr. Leena insisted that the attitude of the superiors towards the community sisters should be a “Servant attitude”. Superior is the animator of the community, who will help the sisters to live the demands of their consecration.

She also insisted on the message of our Holy Father Pope Francis to the consecrated for the year of consecrated life that we are called to be joyful witnesses of the Gospel, to express it through our being and doing. She has beautifully compared the message of our Holy Father on the 15 vices of the consecrated life of today with Communication Letter No. 05 of our Mother Diana Lucia Torres. She has insisted that we have to be ambassadors of God’s love in today’s world through our witnessed life and mission.

In the afternoon session Rev. Sr. Michael Mazarella Pudhota brought very beautifully the Biblical aspect of our mission. She has brought to discover God who embraces and comforts the people. Our God is God of human beings; He acts for and with the people. He is the God of boundless kindness and of goodness, He protects us as the apple of His eye; His anger does not last longer. He consoles and comforts the people. Our God is mother and father. So we who are consecrated to Him, we have to become God’s embrace for the people; being a blessing to others. So as superiors we are called to be ‘mothers’ in our relationship with our sisters in the communities. We should be agents of blessing. We should be embrace of God in our communities.

Thank you sisters for your valuable thoughts which are inviting us to be joyful witnesses of Christ and joy filled sisters in our communities and in mission to the poor and the needy.

where we are called to give good witness by our meaningful service in the mission field. Our former Provincial Rev. Sr. Lilly Josephine Tharigopala shared about the meeting she attended on “Formation of Transformation”. She started with the question what is the goal of a formation? Formation duty is to make formees to fit in to the life-style of Jesus.

Formators and formees should witness as good human being. Formators need to see the problem of the formees in order to

transform. Teach them to be respectable and to be open. Formators and formees need to be “pro-active”. Formators should update themselves with Scripture.

Then sister concluded saying: Be human, be holy and become like Christ. We are all images of Holy Trinity and each one is a small trinity.

Be manifestation of ChristBecome Jesus to others.

Be more of Christ.See as Jesus would see.

Then Fr. Rex Angelo SJ explained how important we are in the eyes of God. We are simple ordinary creature of God.He also quoted from Lumen Gentium 43. “Some Christians are called by God so that they may enjoy special gift of grace.... mission in the church”. He also explained LG 44, 47 and PC 2.To be a disciple means to be Christ-like in everything. He explained very deeply three vital aspects of discipleship with many Biblical texts.

Called by God To be with Him. To be sent out on His mission.

Then he concluded saying that Discipleship is not a static reality but a dynamic one. It is a journey, a course, a pilgrimage a person who deeply rooted in God makes every day. At 11:30 a.m. we participated in the Holy Eucharistic celebration. He gave us some insights of the practical aspects of community living:

My happiness in my community is proportionate to my contribution to my community.

Evaluation of human growth. The behavior of fully human and mature person is always

impracticable. Avoid extremes. Use things and love people Repression. Listening Egoism: sorry but that is the way I am. Persons are resonant to persons. Look for the root of the problem rather than killing the symptom. Help people to respect themselves as they are not they dream

themselves to be. Reacting and responding. Vow of chastity and community life; sexuality Vs sex ability

Then he concluded saying, it is each sister’s responsibility to contribute to make the community to be joyful one. We have to avoid extremes and should have listening power to grow and not to create problems and also he shared that “the community that prays together stays together”.
