LONGING FOR MOTHER HEARTWhen children want something, they go to their mother and when they are in trouble mother comes to their

rescue. That sweet filial relationship and healing touch are ineffable. Everyone is mother's child. A person

may grow old, yet one remains a child, longing for mother's affection and protection. Deep within our

hearts resonates inaudibly that unforgettable word 'Mother' and when we are in distress that hum becomes

louder and stronger. No other human relationship is as lofty and sacred as that of mother and her child.

Our Guru, Sri Radhakrishna Swamiji is Mother par excellence for us. The mother and child sweet

relationship found the loftiest expression in the life of Sri Radhakrishna Swamiji. He himself was a

personification of Divine Mother. Swamiji by his extraordinary Sai-centered life, his child-like dependence

on Sai Baba, his initiation of Vishnu Sahasra Namam impressed his devotees that one should approach Sai

Baba as one's own mother. Such child-like 'Bhakti' touches the rich vein of tender feelings hidden in all. He

said "Sai is your Mother. Sai is your Father. Sai is your friend. Is it an artificial relationship? If you cannot

force your demand on Him, then on whom can you force it"? He asked us to pray to Mother Sai Baba with

a longing heart. His vision dries up all craving for the world and completely destroys all attachment. With a

yearning heart we should persist in cur demand on Mother Sai.

Sri Narasimha Swamiji in his monumental work 'Life of Sai Baba' glorifies Sai as a wish-fulfilling tree. As

our mother, Sai Baba listens to our prayers. As our mother, He understands our tears and turmoil, and

stretches His helping hand to assuage our grief. He is not remote or passive but very near as a mother to

longing children. Such faith as looking upon Sai as our mother is uplifting and reassuring. Established in

the idea of mother, Sai Baba quickly answers our prayers and there is no doubt about it. As the mother is an

embodiment of purity, love and forbearance, the same attributes are seen infinitely magnified in Sai Baba

worshipped as Sai Mother. Our individual efforts and limited intellect fail to sustain us in our times of

trouble and sorrow, when we, like helpless children, can do naught but surrender ourselves at Sai Baba's

feet. Knowing His infinite power and sensing that we belong to Him, we supplicate Him for protection.

Individual lives are bedeviled by troubles and the world is in turmoil. We want to hear the message of

strength, hope and above all love. We struggle hard and yet from time to time our steps falter and we slip.

At such times we find we can hardly endure more. To stand alone and go on working seems impossible.

Then we try to stretch out for the arms of Sai Maharaj as a child to his mother. Yet on the other hand, our

problem has been that we only know how to demand and receive love, kindness and compassion. But we

never feel to reflect that Mother-heart lying within us. Have we cared to develop in us this self-effacing

love of the Mother and share it with others? The sad spectacle of the world around us gives the answer.

Unless we learn to nurture and express for others, the warmth that we have felt from the 'Trinity' - Sai

Baba, Sri Narasimha Swamiji and Sri Radhakrishna Swamiji - their unselfishness and forgiveness, neither

in our homes nor in the external world shall we have peace. Especially in our country we desperately need

this mother-heart of Sai Maharaj and our Swamijis. How shall we kindle it in our hearts little by little?

Let us be up and doing for others. Let us give whatever we have to give without expecting return or

gratitude. Sai Maharaj gave Himself to save Tatya. Sri Narasimha Swamiji and Sri Radhakrishna Swamiji

gave up their lives to uplift us. In the same spirit, let us greet people with a smile and exchange a few kind

words. This surely brings sunshine in our lives and to others also.

We are so self-centered that we rarely notice good qualities in others and hardly appreciate good deeds. Let

us emulate our masters and express praise and gratitude at the slightest opportunity. Surely this capacity is

in every one of us and only one has to kindle it. Sri Radhakrishna Swamiji used to start chanting ‘Vishnu

Sahasra Namam’ the moment somebody began accusing somebody else or any criticism or talk something

on political matters.

Seldom we forgive people who have wronged us. We pray to Sai Baba and our Swamijis to forgive our

crimes. Yet on our part we do not forget even the petty matters. Sri Radhakrishna Swamiji never spoke ill

of others. In fact, he transformed even the lives of a few unvirtuous persons. Why not we cultivate a little of

this divine virtue and achieve peace of mind in our lives?

'Motherland' is a very sweet word. We all use it, but how-much we respect it? We only exploit it for

pleasure seeking and greed for gain. Unless every one of us works for the welfare of all our brethren, our

motherland will not be able to rise higher.

As we recite the prayer given to us by Swamiji : "May everybody be happy, May everybody be free from

disease, May everybody have good luck and May none fall on evil days..." let us live up to the standards.

This very prayer kindles the mother's heart in us. This is the greatest trait that we can cultivate in us and it

is indeed our 'Dakshina' to Sri Radhakrishna Swamiji.

The Trinity' - Sai Baba, Sri Narasimha Swamiji and Sri Radhakrishna Swamiji - indeed are embodiment of

the Divine Mother for us. When we are worthy of being their devotees in word and deed, they draw us to

their warm bosom, revealing their secrets of wisdom and perfection.

Life Is short, and we have never too much time for gladdening the hearts of those who are traveling the

dark journey with us. Oh, Be shift to love,, make haste to be kind!

Who is Mahapurusa?

We are celebrating an Utsavam today-which is the well known Sri Rama Navami day. This is the day when

the Divine Light came upon earth in the garb of Das a rat hi Rama's body. In the Dwaparayuga they first

hailed him as a famous prince and still more famous emperor who established Dharma and promoted peace

and happiness throughout the country not only by the exercise of his Sovereign position but also by his

splendid personal example and inspiring influence. Rama was the very embodiment of virtue-the ideal

Hindu to be followed by every reasonable creature. He was more than that. He was the incarnation of the

Almighty whence all virtue, powers, goodness and perfection emanate. This fact however, was not

perceived by his contemporaries or at least by the vast majority of his contemporaries.

Avatars are not always recognized during their life in the flesh. People are mostly guided by superficial

observation and to add to their difficulties, not only the parents and other relations deal with the Avatars as

a mere human person, but the Avatar himself corroborates their views. Sri Rama declared "Atmanam

Manusham Manye", that is, "I deem myself a mere human being"-when he was addressed by Indira and

others as the Supreme. Jesus who is now worshipped as part of the Trinity also stated "Why do you call me

God? There is none good but God" and he prayed to God on most occasions, for achieving the desired

objects. Sri Sai Baba who is now worshipped as God or as an incarnation of God also led many devotees

into the same attitude of treating him as a mere man. Though Sai said, "I am an agent of God, have vast

powers", he yet also added "Maim Allah Hum", that is "Aham Brahmasmi", "I am Allah, I

am Ganapathi, I am Lakshminarayana, etc." Thus Sai and Rama alike though treated by devotees as

an embodiment of Divinity led many people during their lives to act on the footing of their humanity.

Hence the birthday that is the day of the birth of human body is celebrated by devotees in both cases. The

exact date of Baba's physical birth is not known-not even the year is known. But when asked about the

celebration of birthday, Baba approved of the Rama Navami being considered his birthday. So for nearly

sixty years the Rama Navami is being celebrated at Shirdi as being Baba's special day. On that day two

very tall standards were erected and suitably decked or ornamented with colored flags and a car was also

suitably decked and the car with the flags with proper music accompanied by all the devotees in a crowd

went through the streets and lanes of Shirdi. Starting from the Dwarakamayi it went round and ended with

Dwarakamayi where the two standards were fixed up in front of the Mosque so that the entire world may

see that Sai Maharaj is there protecting all his children-both the Hindus and the Moslems. Baba on such

occasions was seen beaming with joy, his beneficent face shedding hope and faith and courage to fill the

hearts of all the beholders.

Though Baba with his divine glance was watching over all his devotees at all times and places, still, on a

special day like, the Rama Navami his attention was emphasized and concentrated on the special bhaktas

who specially sought to win his grace and love by the above celebration. "Look to me and I look to you" is

what Baba said and what Lord Krishna said-in effect what Sri Sai Krishna still says, which mean 'Fix your

mind on Me. Be devoted to Me. Do your sacrifices (pooja etc.,) for me. Bow to Me. You will attain to Me

having thus made Me your supreme goal and directed your mind and heart to me' or 'This is the solemn

truth. I proclaim it as you are dear to me.' Thus it will be seen that on this Rama Navami day, we remember

the fact of Sri Rama or Sri Sai Rama being ushered in a human body into this earth and starting a career

which was and is entirely devoted to bless mankind temporally and spiritually in every conceivable way,-

with loving appreciation of that fact. If we do pooja to Sai Rama or his portrait or image, let us do it with

the best flowers we can pick up in our joy and enthusiasm. Let us sing songs of praise etc. and fill the air

with our slogans of appreciation and gladden all hearts with our music and inspiring thought. Let us go on

with Keerthans, Bhajans, Poojas and every other form of manifestation of our love to Sri Sai Rama and

though we do not do all these for the sake of reward, the reward is certain. Joy and Blessings for ever and

ever.

Basis of LAWS

Men do not make laws.

They do but discover them.

Laws must be justified by something more than the will of the majority. They must rest on the

ETERNAL FOUNDATION OF RIGHTEOUSNESS.

RULES FOR DAILY LIFEBegin the day with SAI Kneel down to Him in prayer; Lift up thy heart to His abode and seek His love to

share. Open SAI SATHCHARITA and read a portion there; that it may hallow all thy thoughts. And

sweeten all thy care. Go through the day with SAI What ever thy work may be, What ever thou art, at

home, abroad; He still is near to thee. Converse in mind with SAI Thy spirit heavenward raise,

Acknowledge every good bestowed, and offer grateful praise. Conclude thy day with SAI Thy sins to Him

confess Trust in the Lord's BLESSINGS and plead His righteousness. Lie down at night with God, Who

gives His CHILDREN sleep; and when thou tread’s the vie of death He will thee guard and keep.

Constant Remembrance of GodIt is by His grace the devotee gains strength, courage and hope in his march on the divine path. The word

Guru has a world of meaning in it. Guru is at once the master, father, mother, and all in all for him. A saint

to whom the devotee clings with all his heart, like a creeper on the tree, is such a Guru. Although at first the

Guru is a person contacted from outside, he is realized, as the devotee approaches him in the recesses of his

own heart, to be the supreme Deity dwelling within himself.

Just as staff is to one who walks up a steep hill, just as fence to a tender plant, just as milk to a hungry babe,

so the divine name given by the Guru is to the devotee. It sustains, nourishes, strengthens and in every way

envelops the devotee like armor. The power of the name is simply inexpressible. It is sweeter than the

sweetest. To taste it is to taste immortality; it is the giver of endless joy and peace. Death has no terror for

him who has the Name on his lips. Life becomes a round of bliss when it is permeated with the Name. God

is a miracle and wonder, and His name is perhaps a greater miracle and wonder.

So contact of a saint and God's name on the lips comprise all that is necessary for the devotee to get the

vision of God and attain everlasting beatitude. Blessed indeed is he who has dedicated his life to the

Beloved and attuned it with Him.

ASHTAKSHARI JAPA YAJNAOn April 4, 1954, Sri Saipadananda Radhakrishna Swamiji founded the Sri Sai Spiritual Centre in

Bangalore. The activities of the Centre in those days also were many and varied. Apart from bhajans and

chanting of Sri Vishnu Sahasranamam, Swamiji led the devotees in Ashtakshari mantra japa viz. OM

NAMO NARAYANA. Many Ashtakshara horn as were conducted at Sri Vasantha Vallabharayaswami

Temple at Vasanthapura, near Bangalore, Swamiji used to lead the devotees in processions to the temple

doing bhajan and chanting mantras.

Devotees, while chanting Vishnu Sahasranamam daily in the Sri Sai Spiritual Centre between 6 p.m. and 7

p.m. also conduct Ashtakshari Japa every day between 7 p.m. and 7-30 p.m. As a part of Prachar, devotees

visit a temple on every Sunday and conduct mass Ashtakshari Japa. In addition, the Japa is also conducted

in devotees' houses also.

The following is an article on Narayana Upanishad, written and published by Sri Swamiji, during his life

time, which explains not only the meaning and greatness of the mantra, OM NAMO NARAYANA, but

also spiritual and material benefits a devotee would derive by reciting the great mantra daily.

Narayana-Upanishad(Krishna Yajurveda)

Lord Narayana, the Supreme Purusha desired "I shall create offspring," From Narayana emanates prana,

manas, the several organs of sense and action, akas, vayu, agni, apas (water) and pruthvi that supports all.

From Narayana emanates Rudra. From Narayana emanates Indra. From Narayana emanates Prajapathi (the

divine Progenitor). From Narayana emanates the 12 Adityas, Rudras, Vasus, and all the Chandas (Vedas).

Through Narayana do (they) prosper, in Narayana they are absorbed. The Rigveda teaches this. Narayana is

eternal. Brahma is Narayana, Shiva is Narayana, Indra is Narayana, Dik (space) is Narayana, and the

intermediate quarters also are Narayana. That which is above is Narayana, that which is below is Narayana

and that which is in and out is Narayana, the whole universe which existed and will exist is Narayana.

Narayana is the only one that is stainless, sinless, changeless, and without a second. Whoever knows Him

thus, becomes Vishnu Himself. The Yajurveda teaches this.

One should utter "OM" first, then "NAMAH" and then "NARAYANAYA". “Om” is a single syllable;

"Namah" contains two syllables. This is the combination known as the "Ashtakshara of Narayana".

Whoever remembers this Ashtakshara of Narayana and recites it constantly, attains full life supremacy over

men, enjoys the pleasures of royalty and becomes the master of all souls. He attains moksha. The

Samaveda teaches this.

The Yogin having pronounced (the name of) Him who is complete bliss, who is Brahma Purusha and who

is of the nature of pranava (OM) a combination of A, U, M is realized form the bondage of birth and

mundane existence. He who practices the mantra "OM NAMO NARAYANAYA" reaches the abode of

Vishnu (vaikuntah). It is this lotus (heart). It is replete with Vignana. It has the brilliancy of lightning. The

son of Devaki is Brahmanya. Madusudana is Brahmanya. Narayana who pervades all elements, who is one

only, who is the cause, Purusha and who is causeless, is known as Parabrahman, The Atharvana Veda

teaches this.

Whoever recites (this Upanishad) in the morning gets the sins committed during the day destroyed.

Whoever recites this morning and evening becomes free from sins, however sinful he may be. Whoever

recites (it) in the noon facing the sun is freed from all the five great sins as well as from the minor ones.

He derives the good effects of the recitation of all the Vedas. Whoever knows thus attains sayujya of

Narayana. Thus is the Upanishad.

Baharadvaja asked Yajnavalka: "What is "TARAKA"? What is that which causes one to cross (this

mundane existence)? Yajnavalkya replied: "OM NAMO NARAYANAYA is the Taraka". It should be

worshipped as chidatma. "OM" is a single syllable and of the nature of Atma. Namah is of two syllables

and is of the nature of prakrti (matter) NARAYANAYA is of five syllables and is of the nature of

Parabrahman. He who knows this becomes immortal. Through "OM" is Brahma produced; through "NA" is

Vishnu produced; through "MAH" is Rudra produced; through NA is Isvara produced; through RA is the

Anda (virat) produced; through YA is Purusha produced; through NA is Bhagavan (Lord) produced; and

through YA is Paramathma produced. This Ashtakshara of Narayana is the supreme and the highest

Purusha.

Eight forms

A is the first letter; U-is the second; M is the third; Bindu is the fourth; Nada is the fifth; Kala is the sixth;

Kalatita (that beyond Kala) is the seventh; and that which is beyond these is the eighth. It is called

TARAKA because it enables one to cross this mundane existence. Know that TARAKA alone is Brahman

and it alone should be worshipped.

From the letter "A" came Brahma named Jambavan (Ramayana) from 'U" came Upendra named HARI,

from "M" came Siva, known as Hanuman. Bindu is named Isvara and is Satrugna the Lord of the discuss

itself. Nada known as the great Lord is named Bharatha and the sound conch itself. From Kala came the

PURUSHA himself as Lakshmana and the bearer of the earth. Kalatita is known as the goddess Sita

Herself. That which is beyond is Paramathma named Sri Rama and is the highest Purusha. All this is the

explanation of the letter "OM" which is the past, the present, the future and which is other than these

namely Taraka mantra, colour, deity, metre, the Kala, Saksi, and creation. He who knows this becomes

immortal.

Permanent feature

POWER OF GURU(From the glorious life of Saint Damaji of Mangalveda as narrated by Mr. Venkatesan)

That the Lord is servant of the devotee and His wages are mere devotion and steadfast meditation on Him

alone as the sole Refuge, is well exemplified in the story of the illustrious saint of Mangalveda, is in

Maharashtra and Damaji even from his younger days had developed a spirit of surrender to the Lord. His

intelligence and popularity attracted the notice of the ruler of the province who appointed him as the

Revenue Collector of Mangalveda.

Once a great famine raged over the entire locality. Rains failed and there was a great dearth of food grains.

Starvation and disease exacted a heavy toll among the population and people flocked to Damaji for help.

Damaji wanted to relieve them of their distress and ordered the entire royal- granaries to be opened and the

grains distributed among people.

But envious minds began to chafe at Damaji's added glory. They sent petitions to the ruler that he had laid

bare the entire granaries belonging to the state. Damaji was summoned to the Durbar for an answer.

Nothing daunted Damaji and he followed the emissaries. Pandarapur was on the way and Damaji felt that

he should have a bath in the sacred Chanrabagha and offer his worship to Lord Vittal. "Oh Lord, it was you

who made Damaji distribute the grain among your starving children, and again it is You that is taking me

for an explanation at the Durbar. Your ways are indeed mysterious. What need for fear have I, as I know it

is You in everyone who is playing this Drama? I have little care for this body for it is Thy and at Thy

service."

In the meantime at the palace of the ruler, there appeared a Talayari and presented his credentials to the

ruler as the servant of Damaji, and told him that his master had submitted the value of the grain that he was

accused to having misused. The Talayari's appearance overwhelmed the ruler and he was thrilled. The

amount of four lakhs of rupees which was the value of the grain so utilized by Damaji was promptly paid

and a regular receipt taken. Immediately orders were passed withdrawing all proceedings against Damaji

and he was honorably acquitted.

Here at Pandarapur, Damaji after worship began to read 'Bhagavadgita' as usual. On opening the sacred

book he found in it a receipt for four lakhs and an order withdrawing the proceedings and a direction that

he would be received in the palace with all honor. Damaji could not believe his eyes. The Lord's ways are

certainly inexplicable.

The Ruler fell at Damaji's feet and begged for forgiveness for the great hardship he had caused him. Damaji

discovered that it was the Lord who had thus saved His devotee and decided to spend the reminder of his

life devoted to the Lord at Pandarpur.

WHO AM I?

I am the foundation of all business.

I am the source of all prosperity.

I am the parent of genius.

I am the salt that gives life its savor.

I put the act into action.

I have laid the foundation of every fortune

I can do more to advance you than you own parents, be they ever so wealthy.

I must be loved before I can bestow my greatest blessing and achieve my greatest ends.

I must be loved with a love that pastes all ordinary understanding,

Loved, I make life sweet, purposeful and fruitful.

Am represented in the humblest savings, in the largest block of investments.

All progress, and happiness springs from me.

BABA CAME TO US

Fishing for FAILURE

Man swims in the sea of self-satisfaction,

Nibbles at the bait of procrastination.

Swallows the hook of mediocrity, and

Ends up in the net of failure.

There are some experiences which are beyond explanation. They exist as sunlight. The manifestation of

divinity is beyond all our limited perceptions. As for myself, I cannot explain the cause of incidents; but

they exist as clear as sunlight. I humbly try to catch the spirit.

My parents and grandparents were indeed blessed to see Sai Baba when he was physically alive. One day

Baba gave to my father a coconut, some sweets and two silver coins to my grandfather, who was then

working as a Deputy Collector at Nasik. He asked my father to give him a 'Dakshina' of nine rupees and

also gave him a chillim to smoke. Both my father and grandfather started worshiping Sai Baba even after

we shifted to Jamkhandi in Karnataka. The elders in the family objected to this worship and in order not to

hurt their feelings, my grandfather put the photo of Sai into a suitcase. They worshipped Sai Baba mentally

till the last breath of their lives. As I was a pet grandchild, my grandfather used to narrate miracles of Sai

Baba. He became Dewan of Bhor, later at Ramdurga and finally at Jamkhandi till it merged in the

independent India. In his retired life he spent on spiritual quests and I remember Mr. B.D. Jatti (who later

on became Vice-President of India) visiting him now and then.

During this time, Gurudev Ranade, who was then the Vice-Chancellor of Allahabad University frequently

called on my grandfather at Jamkhandi. My grandfather died in 1958.

Then the problems started for us. I graduated at Poona and had got into the Law College when my

grandfather passed away. Since the financial position became critical after his death, I had to leave the Law

college and work as a teacher at Malvan. Here due to a strange coincidence, I came in contact with a girl, I

liked her and subsequently we married.

After marriage, I learnt that my wife was a very quiet devotee of Sai Maharaj and as any other young man,

in order to please the newly married spouse; I also started worshipping Sai Baba. She had a photo of Sai

Baba with a horse. Along with her, I started reading 'Sai pothi'. I felt this was more pretence than devotion!

In 1965, we were blessed with a son. My son was healthy but gave indications of dumbness. We did not

know what to do. We took him to Shirdi when he was two-year old. He virtually slept off on the’ Samadhi’.

When we returned home two days later, he was saying 'Baba- Baba'. He picked up vocabulary and he

became normal in all respects. This miracle changed my attitude towards Baba and I accepted him as my

God!

We shifted to Goa in 1960. On seeing our worship of Sai Baba a good number of neighbors also became

His devotees. We hold ‘Satsang’ and the number is ever increasing. In 1977, a devotee by name Avinash

went to Shirdi and brought a small bag of Udhi. My wife told him: "Avinash! You came from Shirdi. Why

did you not bring Baba with you"? He answered: "Baba is coming - Baba is coming. He is on His way."

Avinash's word turned out to be prophetic. On 9th June 1977 my wife had a dream: "Your brother-in-law is

coming. Do not allow him straightaway. Take out ‘Dristi’ (evil eye) and then allow him to meet your

husband". My wife saw in her dream Sai Baba in orange robes climbing the footsteps and herself taking out

‘Dristi’ with a piece of bread and then Sai Baba entering the house. The dream ended. I did not attach any

importance to her dream but she had implicit faith that Baba is coming to us:

On 22nd June 1977, in the afternoon, someone tapped the front door. I opened the door and noticed that

two cars were parked close to my house and around 20-30 people were standing near the cars. A Sai

devotee by name Sri Abajee Panshikar greeted me and said: "We have brought Sai Murthji to install in the

temple tomorrow. In the temple, arrangements are still to be made. So we would like to keep the idol in

your house for tonight".

We agreed. Baba's idol was brought inside and kept on a table. In the night, we performed 'Arathi' and sang

Sai-bhajans. My wife said: "Baba- you really belong to us. You should not leave us." I laughed at her

request and said "Baba will go away to the temple."

Next day, around noon people started gathering near the temple. Sai-devotees Kulkarni, Kishore Sahoo,

Jaya Rao came to my house. News came that there was some difficulty in installing the idol in the temple.

Ultimately the crowd came to my place and in a chorus said: "Let the Murthi be here". They performed

Ganapathi pooja, Sathyanarayana pooja and then the idol was installed on a table in my house. Baba has

stayed permanently with us since then! In our own humble way we worship Him. People from different

parts of the world have attended ‘arati’ and ‘pooja’ in our house and everyone has got some experience or

the other. Prayers have been answered. Sai Baba is blessing us and is close to us in every moment of life.

Thus Sai Baba came to us in an incredible manner.

Three LOADS-Parable of LIFE

An engineer said one day, when we build a bridge, we figure on three loads the bridge must bear.

The dead load, the live toad, and the wind load.

"The dead load is the weight of the bridge itself, the live load is the weight of the traffic on the bridge, and

the wind load Is the pressure of the wind on its superstructure."

This is a parable of life, for life can be defined in terms of successfully meeting these three pressures,

which bear upon every life.

Life's "dead load" is concerned with managing one's self.

Its "live load" is the pressure of daily wear and tear.

And its "wind load" is adversity and unalterable circumstances.

WHO IS A TRUE DEVOTEEVarious paths are prescribed for the progress of the soul to God or to the awareness of its own eternal

splendor and joy. Of these the simplest and easiest is the path of devotion. The devotee looks upon God as

his supreme ideal and keeps Him ceaselessly in his thoughts to such an extent as to be filled with the

radiance, power and peace of the Beloved. It is now that the veil between the devotee and the Beloved is

removed and there is the consciousness of the devotee's identity with Him.

In the contemplation of the Beloved the devotee loses himself, and his individual existence disappears. In

its stead the inherent divine life manifests, transforming him into the image of the Beloved. Devotion

therefore leads to complete self-surrender. When the heart is fired with the burning zeal to meet and

become one with the Beloved, the devotee's life undergoes a radical change. His attachments to the

ephemeral things fall off. His mind and all his senses are athirst for feeling and sensing God's presence

through them. The devotee's heart cries and longs for Him, eyes to see Him ears to hear Him, hands to

touch Him, tongue to taste Him and nose to smell Him. When a devotee thus finds his Beloved, his

experience can better be imagined than described-perhaps it is not even possible to imagine it.

ADWAITHA IN VISHNU SAHASRA NAMA

Ask the leaf; "Are you complete in yourself?"

"No" the leaf will answer, "my life is in the branches."

Ask the branch the same question. It will answer: "No, my life is in the trunk."

Ask the trunk if it is complete and you will hear: ''No, my life is in the root."

Then ask the root, and if It is honest, it will say; "No, my life is In the trunk and the branches and the

leaves. Take away any of them and I will die."

That is the way with the tree of human life.

That is the fact in every society, every family.

No one is completely and entirely alone.

Without other, no one can live, no one can grow no one can succeed.

Vishnu Sahasranama is replete with Adwaitha concepts. The opening word ‘Viswam’ concisely expresses

nothing but Adwaitha. As we scan for 'Adwaitha' concept in Vishnu Sahasra Namam, we find that Bhishma

is depicted as a great teacher who freely moves with students, accepts and appreciates their difficulties.

Often he presents a problem and solves it himself. Sometimes he poses the problem and allows the students

to solve it, by giving clues. In one place he is giving homework. On certain occasions he maintains

decorum by avoiding a direct reference. Finally when it comes to summing, he concludes decisively

reaching step by step to a pointed culmination where doubt ceases.

A lesson in kindergarten: 'Bhojanam Bhokta' is the first lesson in Adwaitha. That He is the food and He is

the eater is difficult to understand. Bhishma sees the little boys blinking and he immediately says:

'Sahishnuhu' and tolerates and perhaps says: "Well boys - you will understand this later."

Bhishma identifying with pupils: "Darpaha Darpadha Druptaha Durdharaha" - a concept that says that He

is the destroyer of pride and that He is proud Himself is an adwaithic principle very difficult to grasp.

Accepting the difficulty, Bhisma says 'Durdaraha' that He cannot be grasped.

Bhishma posing and solving the problem himself: He is worshipped (Stavyaha), He is the lover of praise

(Stava Priyaha), He is the praise itself (Stotram), He is the process of praising (Stuthihi) He is the praise

Himself (Sthotha). Though the concepts are individually incomprehensible, Bhishma places the word

'Puma' which says that He is full, He is all, He is whole and He is everything - clears the confusion.

Bhishma maintains decorum: He is the punishing rod (Danda), He is the punisher (Damayitha) He is the

punishment itself (Damaha). The trend of Adwaitha here permits to say 'Danditha' - that He is the punished.

To avoid an awkward situation in reference to the supreme justice, Bhishma maintains decorum and passes

on without mentioning 'Danditha.'

Pupil left to his resources: He is the bestower of (Swasthi) blessing (Swastidha). He is the destroyer of

auspiciousness (Swasthikrit). He is ever intent in doing well (Swasthidakshinaha). The consolidated

concept though unintelligible is neither admitted so, as done in certain previous occasions nor any solution

given.

Cross reference: By putting 'Yeva Cha' to the adwaithic idea 'Annam Annadaha' (He is the food and He is

the eater of the food) Bhishma is directing a cross reference Kshetragnaha Akshara. He is the undecaying

(Aksharaha) 'Soul' of all beings {Kshetragnaha) and in consequence of that, He is the eater of the food.

Bhishma imposes homework: 'Kamha Kamarit....etc., is an adwaithic bunch. Bhishma sets the problem in a

spirit of homework. The word 'Kanta' is the clue and so the result _ 'Kamdenuhu Kamapalaha Kami kanta

kritagamaha'. The significant word 'Kami' that is absent in the imposed problem and now found in the

homework study, is the key work that completes the Adwaitha concept.

Bhishma urges to strive: He is instrument of (Karanam) every action. He is the cause (Kaaranam) of it. He

is the doer of it (Kartha), He is the non-doer (Vikartha). Bhishma illumines the pupils with an anecdote of

Dhruva.

Bhishma carries to a transcendental plane: 'Yajnaha Yajnapthi'... etc., is a long adwaithic description in

which Bhishma intends to transcend yajna to a dharmic plane.

Bhishma sums up: When it comes to a final say, Bhishma becomes authoritative and crowns the delineation

on Adwaitha with the word 'Pramana' and climaxes with ambiguous 'Yekathma', The words in between

explain a simple and stepping fashion., He is the abode of every prana - Jeevathma (Prana-nilayaha). He is

the very life of it {Prana - Jeevanaha). Thus He is the very essence {Thathvam) and He is the real knower

of this Thathvam (Tathva - with). Finally Bhishma reaches the summit and declares that Thathwam' and

Thatwa which are only one and one 'Yekathma'. Such a graded expressive explanation of Adwaitha from

the very base to the ceiling is Bhishma's and is in the Vishnu Sahasra Nama.

Dear Sai-bandhus: Let us worship the 'Trinity' - Sai Baba, Sri Narasimha Swamiji and Sri Radhakrishna

Swamiji - as the one 'Yekathma' and they are indeed three in one spirit.

A Thought

There is no purifier greater than Divine love. Love in the making sees faults but forgives them. Love in its

grand fulfillment never sees any faults-hence it has nothing to forgive. This is the supreme innocence. To

behold the Truth in all and as all is to realise God as infinite Love. Equal Vision, Eternal Happiness and

Universal Love mean one and the same thing. The days of caste, creed and tradition are gone-they have

done sufficient mischief. The changing time and a true vision of reality do not admit of these worn out

shibboleths that stand for selfishness, tyranny and greed. Truth is colorless, pure and glorious. It can be

attained only by possessing a heart filed with purity and love and a mind enlightened with wisdom.

From the individual, racial and national, let our vision be cast into the universal. Let us not be bound by

false doctrines and absurd traditions. Freedom and Happiness are our goal. Freedom comes only when we

break through these self-imposed limitations and Happiness is ours when our liberated spirit finds its union

with God-who is everlasting life and joy.

UNTO HIS FOLD

meaning of your heart and mine, I'm sure that we would differ less, And clasp our hands in friendliness;

Our thoughts would pleasantly agree If I knew you and you knew me.

I was a student of a high school in the early forties. One evening as I was returning from the school and

proceeding towards National High School side, someone told me that a film is being shown in the National

High School quadrangle. Immediately I ran over there. I saw a number of people present for the

film/lecture. It was a magic lantern lecture being conducted by an elderly gentleman. He was inserting

slides on Sai Baba and explaining each one. He was none other than Shri Narasimha Swamiji who carried

the message of Sai Baba to all nooks and corners of India. I was deeply impressed by his talk. This in fact

sowed the seeds of Sai-devotion in me.

Later I had the privilege of coming in contact with H. H. Sri Radhakrishna Swamiji who came to Bangalore

in 1953. Sometime in 1953 or 54, I had one more occasion to have 'darshan' of Sri Narasimha Swamiji. At

that time he camped in Sri S. Narayana Rao's (retired Inspector - General of Police in Mysore) house on

Subbarama Chetty Road. Regular bhajans and 'satsang' used to be held by then under the guidance of Sri

Radhakrishna Swamiji at the house of Sri M. Subbaramayya near Nagasandra Circle.

Some devotees represented to Sri Narasimha Swamiji that he should visit Tumkur. Swamiji agreed to this

provided he should be dropped at Bangalore before dusk. Sri B.S. Krishna Murthy arranged for a car and I

had the privilege of accompanying Sri Narasimha Swamiji and Sri Radhakrishna Swamiji on this visit to

Tumkur. First we visited a devotee's house near Railway Station and then proceeded to my brother-in-law,

Sri R. Srinivasa Rao's house. 'Pada Pooja' was done by many devotees. When the clock struck 'FIVE', Sri

Narasimha Swamiji in a firm voice said "I should be back in Bangalore by six". Accordingly we returned to

Bangalore, though many devotees were disappointed. Sri Narasimha Swamiji was a stickler for time and

kept up this discipline in his Sai-Prachar.

For me the very thought of this trip to Tumkur along with the perfect Masters purifies the soul and I get the

power to draw Sai Baba more and more into my soul. Sai Baba and Swamijis are blessing us for ever. (The

WHAT IS LIFE?

Life is a race; don’t whimper if the track is and the goal is distant. One day you shall reach it.

Life is a voyage: Don't complain if the storms batter the hull or the winds tatter to shreds the sails. One day

you shall come to your haven.

Life is growth: Don't find fault if the seed lies smothered in the dark earth before it blooms and blossoms.

One day you shall have your harvest.

Life is pilgrimage: Don't falter on the road through self-pity because stones cut your feet and leave your

blood on the trail. One day you will come Immanuel’s land. The God who through the boundless sky

guides the flight of the sparrow, who builds the blind bird's nest, will see to it that in His good time you

shall arrive.

Life is great schools in which you are constantly learning how better to work, plan, and achieve. The

schoolmaster of life may be seen stern and relentless, but the discipline is for your ultimate good.

LIVE FOR TRUTH

God is love and our hearts are abounding with thus Supreme Love. Complete surrender to Him is the only

way to realise the fullness and grandeur of this love. Through all our activities let us make Him the mark

and goal of life-for He is the only Reality-the only Truth.

Every man can raise himself to this spiritual height and eminence. In fact, every man is God in reality and

in making. Only he has to shuffle off the mask which has made him obvious of his divine nature. So God-

realisation is nothing but a manifestation of one's own divinity. It is not to unite with a life eternal outside

and separate from him. It is an awakening or awareness of his inherent spiritual existence. Sadhana consists

in removing the obsession that he is not really what he is.

An intense fire of aspiration lit in the heart of the devotee for the realisation of God. Divine will choosing

him for the achievement of this goal, and the showering upon him the fullness of divine grace that

transmutes the human into the divine, all mean one and the same thing. It is the inner urge and the

corresponding divine sanction followed by the flooding into him of the radiance of the Eternal that bring

about the great change.

Swamiji to my Rescue

We have all heard and experienced the omnipotence and omniscience of Baba and Swamiji in our daily

life. We have also seen how they guide, protect, look after and take us on the right path. Baba said "I draw

my bhaktas from the jaws of death" How true. The all merciful Baba and Swamiji have all along looked

after their devotees and continue to do so. I am saying this after one more such rescue act which took place

recently. On September 14, 1992, I was resting in the afternoon when I felt a squeeze on my heart and pain

in the left forearm. I asked my son to apply some ointment and in a few minutes I felt normal. I moved my

right arm and there was no pain or discomfort. I had heard that there would be pain in the left arm when

blood supply to heart muscle is less, and concluded that there was no heart problem. But I did feel very

weak.

On the 16th evening, I had to meet a friend and my son would not permit me to drive my scooter and took

me on his motor cycle. At the friend's place, I had to climb up and down to meet my friend. We came back

home and I was feeling too exhausted and weak to even have my dinner and went to bed without it. My son

examined my legs and arms. They were cold and I was sweating all over. He phoned the doctor, who

advised that I should have something hot to drink and would visit us in the morning to see me. My daughter

had been to Palani and returned with 'panchamratam.' I had a liberal helping of the same and a cup of hot

milk with extra sugar. In a short while the sweating stopped and I slept well.

The next morning, the doctor came home, checked me and advised me to get on EGG, Chest X-ray, and

blood sugar (as I am diabetic) and a stress test and advised me to go to Wockhardt Hospital.

I was given an appointment for the stress test at 3 and my son took me there at 2 to get the other tests done.

The EGG was taken and I tried to persuade the technician to show me the ECG which she refused. I went

to give blood for the next test and at that time my son told the technician that we were anxious to know the

report as I was not well. So they took the ECG to the Doctor, who examined me and advised a blood

enzyme test and confirmed that I had a heart attack in the previous 72 hours. He said that I should be

admitted to the intensive care unit immediately, which was done.

On the 23rd September the Cardiologist performed an Angiogram and confirmed that I had two blocks in

the blood vessels on the heart. One block was only 40% and the other was 90%. The Cardiologist advised

that an angioplasty be performed. In this process, a tube is introduced in the blood vessel and at the block a

balloon is inflated and the block is compressed against the wall of the blood vessel and the blood flow is

restored to normal.

Angioplasty was performed in the morning of 25th and it went off well. The duration of this process is

hardly 30 minutes. You can see the whole process on a video screen. I was wheeled back to the intensive

care unit and was given seven or eight intravenous drips. As these drips were being arranged, I felt

uncomfortable and told the Cardiologist about it. I was immediately brought to an inclined position with

my head down and feet up. The next instant I lost sight of the doctors and I knew I was dead. I was not

scared, I did not scream or utter God's name, but I knew I was dead.

Immediately after, I found myself in a brightly illuminated place where there were no shadows in any

direction and everything was bright. There used to be a wooden chair in front of Swamiji's ashram and this

chair, I saw and recognizing it, was wondering how this came to be there and lo! The next instant I saw our

Swamiji seated in this very chair and looking at me. I was so excited to see our beloved Swamiji that I

forgot all propriety and did not fold my hands in prostration. I was wondering why there was no smile of

welcome on Swamiji's face but he kept on coking at me as though I was an intruder, I kept walking towards

him and all along I was immensely happy that I was again in the august presence of our Swamiji. I was

hardly a few steps from Swamiji. He gave his characteristic smile and even before I could realise this,

Swamiji vanished and so did the chair and the brightness. I was conscious of the doctors and nurses calling

me my name. The Cardiologist, Dr. Khanolkar asked me if I was thirsty and suggested I have some tea

which I did. On the 28th of September, I was discharged and came back home a normal person.

Spiritual Value of the Divine Name

Ajamila, a great sinner, by repeating on death-bed the name of his son, which happened to be the name of

Sri Hari, reached the highest abode of the Lord. How, then, can there be any doubt about a person who

reverently repeats the name of Lord Krishna attaining salvation.

A person guilty of such heinous crimes as the murder of a Brahmana or of his father, mother or preceptor of

the slaughter of a cow, and even a paraih who lives on the flesh on dogs, is purified by repeating the name

of Sri Hari.

The Kali Age is full of many evils; but it has one great virtue that during this age one can free himself from

all bonds and realize God by mere repetition of the name of Sri Krishna.

Let it be as some forgotten spot to which no path lead;

We are happy to record here that the sanctum sanctorum of Sri Sai Spiritual Centre is now complete with

the installation of the marble idol of Sri Narasimha Swamiji on 27th, January 1993. The Trinity- Sai Baba,

Sri Narasimha Swamiji and Sri Radhakrishna Swamiji are blessing us in 'Saakar'. H. H Sri Rangapriya

Swamiji delivered the benedictory address on the installation day.

Vedic rituals like Ganapathi Homa, prathistapana homa, and surya namaskar were arranged from 22nd to

27th January 1993. There was Samoohika Rama-mantra japam from 8 am to 8 pm on 22.1.1993. On 23rd

January 1993, 'Akhanda Vishnu Sahasra Nama Parayan' was done between 8 Am and 8 PM. 72 hours

‘Akhanda Sai Nama Japam’ was conducted by Andhra and Bangalore devotees from 24th January 1993 to

27th January 1993, under the guidance of Sai-brother Sri D. Shankaraiah of Hyderabad. Sri Ashok,

grandson of Sri Mahlsapathy had brought the sacred 'Padukas' of Sai Baba from Shirdi and thousands of

Sai - devotees participated in the Nama-Japam and had ‘darshan’ of Sai-Padukas

There was 'Narayana Seva' on 27.1.1993 and over 2000 devotees partook prasad. There was a

public meeting in the evening presided over by Sri M. Rangachari, President, Shirdi Sai Mission

of Hyderabad. Sri T. Kesava Rao, President, All India Sai Samaj, released the special issue of

'Saipadananda' brought out on this occasion. Sri Puttanna gave an illuminating lecture on the life

and mission of Sri Narasimha Swamiji. Sr. M. Ranqachari, Sri R. Partahasarathy, Sri T. Keshava

Rao, Sri C V Bhaskara Rao, Sri D. N. Moorthy, Dr. S.K. Subba Rao, Dr. Pad'ma Rao, Dr.

Ramitha Pai, Sri Sridhar of Elegant Printers; Sri Udupa Sri Sankaraiah and Sri Ashok

Mahalspathy were honoured on the occasion with shawls. Sri D.V.L.N. Murthy welcomed the

SWAMIJI'S ARADHANA

The 13th Aradhana of Poojya Sri Radhakrishna Swamiji was celebrated with great devotion and love from

14th January 1993 to 20th January 1993. Krama Aradhana was performed on 19th January 1993 with all

rituals. Over 1500 devotees participated in the krama aradhana to receive the blessings of Swamiji. In the

evening of 19th January, there was a ‘Satsang’, wherein devotees narrated their personal experiences.

There was a children's programme by Sri Saipadananda Bala Vihar, under the able guidance of Dr. P.S.

Narayana Rao. Earlier on the 14th January 1993, devotees proceeded to Devagiri Venkateswara Temple in

Banashankari II Stage, reciting bhajans and Vishnu Sahasra Namam. To mark Swamiji's Mahasamadhi in

the English almanac there was 'Akhanda Vishnu Sahasra Nama' from 8.30 AM to 10.40 PM on that day.

Sri Saikoti Mahatharaka Likhit Nama Japa Yagna 1993

one's karma is destroyed. I stay by his side always."

Such is the greatness of Sri Sai. Inspired by the immense devotion of a number of devotees observed during

the Sri Sainama Akhanda Saptaha during 1989, under the auspices of Sri Sai Spiritual Centre, Bangalore,

by the will and direction of Sri Sai, Sri Saikoti Mahatharaka Likhita Nama Yagna was started in July 1989.

The Mahamanthra OM SAI SRI SAI JAYA JAYA SAI worked wonders on each devotee. Sai's ever

pouring grace was showered on devotees who were engaged in Sai Likhit Japa. Three crores and 10 lakhs

Likhit Japa offered at the holy Feet of Sri Sai by more than 1000 devotees all over India and abroad were

immersed in the Holy sangam of Kanya Kumari on 11.4.1991 and the yagna was conducted at the Sai

Spiritual Centre from 6.4.1991 to 8.4.1991.

Meanwhile, Sri Sai prompted Sri Sai Mandali (R) to start Saikoti Mahatharaka Likhita Nama Japa Yagna

on Guru Poornima day, 26th July 1991. More than 1100 Sai devotees all over the Sai world, have so far

offered more the 2 crores 80 lakhs Sai Likhita Japa and the total by March end 1993, is expected to cross 3

crores. Sri Sai Mandali is conducting the second Sri Saikoti Mahatharaka Yagna on 2nd April 1993 when

the Dhyana Mandira specially constructed to house the Likhit Japa written by all the devotees, will also be

inaugurated.

It is the experience of Sai devotees that the Likhit Japa has not only increased faith and devotion as Sri Sai

has fulfilled their desires but Likhit Japa has now become a habit with them. So Sai Likhit Japa is a

continuous and wish-yielding Ganga. So devotees may continue to write and offer all Likhit Japa usual

either at Sri Sai Spiritual Centre, Thyagaraja Naga Bangalore 560 028 or at Sri Sai Mandali ( R) , Sampige

Rao Malleswaram, Bangalore - 560 003, at the Holy Feet of Sri Sai As the authorities of Sai Mandirs at

Mysore and Boodhigerc have now been inspired to start the third Sri Saikoti Mahatharaka Likhit

Japa Yagna shortly, the Likhit Japa offer by Sai devotees will be transferred and kept at the holy precincts

of Sri Mandir at Mysore or Boodhigere in due course.! So fill the Sai Lamp with the oil of your Sai

devotion and may your divine life be ever and ever bright under the golden shade of Sri Sai Jyothi.

A man may be learned in all the scriptures and have studies all the philosophies. He may have performed

severe austerities. All this is of no avail if the redeeming, elevating and transforming power of the Divine

within him has not begun its work. All true sadhakas who are on the divine path, at one stage of their

progress, become like furnaces in which the impure metal is freed from its dross, and his life flows out in

its pristine spiritual beauty and splendor.

Just as the sculptor reveals a figure of rare charm and grace in a crude stone so the working of the grace
